Coronavirus interrupts world’s longest-running cartoon

Production of the world’s longest-running cartoon and a mainstay of the Japanese weekend has been interrupted by the coronavirus, forcing the broadcast of re-runs for the first time in decades.

“Sazae-san”, which first aired in 1969, revolves around the life of Mrs. Sazae, a cheerful but klutzy full-time housewife who lives with her parents, husband, son, brother and sister.

The 30-minute episodes aired Sunday nights are very popular, and for many in Japan have come to denote the end of the weekend.

But the cartoon, recognized as the longest-running animated TV series by Guinness World Records, has been hampered by the outbreak of the virus, with animation dubbing halted to keep staff safe, broadcaster Fuji Television Network said.

“We will halt broadcast of new episodes of ‘Sazae-san’ for the time being from May 17 and instead air re-runs,” it announced on Sunday.

The network said upcoming broadcasts would be episodes from two years ago, adding it would announce a date for the resumption of new episodes as soon as possible.

It is the first time the network has been forced to air re-runs since 1975, when the economic effects of an earlier oil crisis lingered.

Japan has seen a comparatively small coronavirus outbreak with nearly 15,800 infections and 621 deaths.

The country is under a state of emergency that was extended last week until the end of May, though the government is considering lifting the measures early in parts of the country.

BTS is Guinness World Record holder for 2018

K-pop group Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) has just made history with their United States TV debut performance, and the flood of milestones has yet to slow down as the group scored a spot in the Guinness World Record 2018 edition, for having the most Twitter engagement for a musical group, the New Straits Times reports.

In a tweet, the Guinness World Record first congratulated the group on their successful AMA stage performance and proceeded to tell the fans the good news.

The group sits with 152,112 retweets under One Direction member Harry Styles who had 180,607 retweets.

However, according to website Social Blade (a site that ranks the top 10 Twitter accounts according to overall engagement), the group is currently at the top of the list with 252,231 average retweets and 634,246 likes per tweet.

Other BTS-related accounts included in the list are @bts_love_myself, @bts_bighit and @BigHitEnt.

Aside from BTS, Korean boy group EXO (@weareoneEXO) is also included in Social Blades’ top 10 Twitter accounts according to engagement. The group placed fourth.

Along with this milestone, BTS also has the most Twitter followers for a K-pop group, as of this writing, with 10.3 million followers. JB

Pizza-tossing record smashed in China

SHANGHAI - More than 500 people tossed pizza dough simultaneously in Shanghai on Wednesday, breaking a world record.

Participants are required to stretch and toss the pizza dough in a traditional way for a minimum of one minute, maintaining the size of the dough as long as 30.5 centimeters (12 inches).

Some 525 people gathered for the event, held to raise awareness about breast cancer and money for charity, but 14 of them failed to make the challenge according to the rules, Guinness World Record certification officer Cheng Dong said.

"The final result is 511. Congratulations, it's a new Guinness World Record," he said.

The previous record was set in June with 338 people tossing pizza dough in London. — Reuters

Hundreds in England break world record for howling at the moon

BEDFORDSHIRE, England - More than 400 people, many dressed as werewolves, howled at the moon for more than a minute on Saturday, breaking the Guinness World Record for howling.

The 464 howlers at a new attraction at a Halloween theme park at Mead Open Farm broke the previous record of 296 for the most people howling for a minute. The earlier record was set by students at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in the United States in 2013.

"The reason we've gone for a werewolf howl is because obviously the attraction is called The Howl," said Matt Heast of Mead Open Farm. — Reuters
