GMA Network dominates nationwide TV ratings in July

Broadcast leader GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) continues to be the country’s TV network of choice based on data from the industry’s widely trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

GMA ruled across all dayparts in the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) for the entire month of July (with July 23 to 31 based on overnight data), with an average total day people audience share of 43.5 percent; leading ABS-CBN’s 37 percent by 6.5 points.

Similarly, in Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV household population in the country, the Kapuso Network maintained a strong lead from morning to evening block with an average people audience share of 50.3 percent; besting competition by 19.5 points.

Majority of the shows in NUTAM’s list of top-rating programs were from GMA. Likewise, in Urban Luzon, the Kapuso Network bagged the first 9 spots in the list of top programs led by Pepito Manaloto, Magpakailanman, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Mulawin vs. Ravena, 24 Oras, My Love from the Star, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, 24 Oras Weekend, and Ika-6 Na Utos.

Meanwhile, GMA-7’s airing of the Battle of Brisbane: Pacquiao vs Horn last July 2 was the most watched TV special nationwide and in Urban Luzon last month.

More Filipinos also tuned in to GMA’s live telecast of President Rodrigo Duterte’s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 24. GMA Network’s “SONA 2017” became the most watched coverage nationwide with 37.4 percent people audience share; outranking ABS-CBN’s “Pangako ng Pagbabago: SONA 2017,” which only got 34.3 percent. GMA-7’s coverage registered an even bigger margin in Urban Luzon with 43.2 percent people audience share versus competition’s 26.2 percent.

Nielsen data is gathered through a greater number of sampled homes nationwide in comparison to Kantar Media. With approximately 900 more homes surveyed in Total Urban and Rural Philippines compared to Kantar, Nielsen data is statistically considered more representative of the total TV population.

In 2016, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement increased its client pool to a total of 36 clients/subscribers consisting of 12 local TV networks including TV5, Aksyon TV, CNN Philippines, Net 25, Solar Entertainment Corporation, Viva Communications Inc., among others; 5 regional clients; 2 block timers and 17 media agencies.

Football, showbiz stars set for Messi’s wedding

Football and showbiz stars gather in northern Argentina on Friday for Latin America’s celebrity wedding bash of the decade when Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi marries his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo.

Pop star Shakira and her husband, Messi’s teammate Gerard Pique, are expected among the 260 guests, according to media and locals close to the event.

They will join old friends of the couple and footballers such as his Barcelona strike partners Luis Suarez and Neymar.

The party at a casino in his hometown Rosario will be a respite for the player from his legal woes. A Spanish court last month rejected his appeal against a conviction for tax fraud.

All-star guest list

Brunette bride Roccuzzo, 29, will wear a dress by Spanish designer Rosa Clara, which has been flown over from Barcelona.

The designer has dressed stars such as actresses Eva Longoria and Sofia Vergara as well as Spain’s Queen Letizia.

From 2200 GMT the guests will pack into the Hotel City-Center Casino, which stands right next to a crime-ridden slum run by drug gangs.

“Messi’s wedding accentuates the sense of inequality that is symbolized by the casino in that neighborhood,” said Carlos del Frade, author of several books on the drug trade in Rosario.

This city of 1.2 million people is also a cradle of footballing talent, however.

“Rosario lives and breathes football. That is another reason Lionel feels so comfortable here,” the city’s mayor, Monica Fein, told AFP.

“I think he is excited that through his wedding his friends (from abroad) will be able to get to know the city he loves so much.”

Local delicacies

The civil wedding ceremony and party will all take place inside the venue, and the guests will be lodged there too.

Messi, 30 — considered a man of few words — has reportedly asked chefs to cook local delicacies such as “locro” stew and “empanada” pasties for the feast.

The star dish is a typical Argentine beef roast including chitterlings, gizzards and kidneys.

Uruguayan pop bands Rombai and Marama plus singer Karina, wife of Argentina footballer Sergio Aguero, will perform at the dance.

It is not known whether the guests will also get a song from Shakira, the Colombian diva famous for “Whenever, Wherever.”

Tight security and media scrum

Some 155 journalists have been accredited to cover the bash, but have been warned they will have no access to the guests.

Security will be handled by a private team of Israeli specialists used by Messi for all his excursions.

“In Lionel Messi’s case, he’s widely accepted by the people at all levels,” said Diego Manso, a local private security consultant.

“All the same, the security systems will never overlook the probability of a lot of people wanting to approach him, wanting to touch him, take photos with him, from their risk analysis.”

Messi and Roccuzzo live in Barcelona where he plays, but still return regularly to Rosario on holiday.

The couple had their two children baptized there last year: Thiago, 4 and one-year-old Mateo, both born in Barcelona.

“It’s no surprise that he is coming back here to get married,” one of the wedding guests, the player’s old school friend Diego Vallejos, told AFP.

“He is an ordinary person who just wants to be near his family and friends. He is a humble person. Money has not changed his personality.”

Messi and Roccuzzo met as children. He moved to Spain when he was 13 to join FC Barcelona. But they kept in touch.

“They are the love of each other’s lives,” says Vallejos.

Eat Bulaga’s ‘Kalyeserye’ officially ends

Fans of the phenomenal hit “Kalyeserye,” a segment in the long-running noontime variety show Eat Bulaga finally reached its end last Saturday, Sept. 3.

The final episode featured the “The Explorer” sisters as they departed for the US. Lola Nidora then entrusted her most precious granddaughter “Maine” to “Alden” while they are away.

The phenomenal love team of Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards, who already play themselves in the comedy series, arranged a surprise despedida party for the two grandmas.

The despedida party featured emotional throwback of scenes and stills, which are some of the most remarkable moments in the series.

The show, which started off with Lola Nidora’s objections over Alden’s pursuance of then “Yaya Dub,” ended up earning Lola Nidora’s trust and approval.

The outrageously hilarious show that gave birth to the extraordinary characters Lola Nidora, Lola Tinidora and Lola Tidora played by the comedic trio of Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola and Paolo Ballesteros, collectively known as JoWaPao, inevitably made some audiences emotional with their final episode. But though the show has ended, the grandmas promised that they shall return.

Is Paolo Ballesteros suspended from ‘Eat Bulaga’?

Fans and netizens have expressed concern over the absence of “Eat Bulaga” mainstay Paolo Ballesteros during the past episodes of the longest-running noontime show in the country.

Ballesteros’ absence from the show has fueled rumors that he has been suspended.

A Bandera report said that netizens have speculated that the possible cause of suspension of the host was his series of Facebook posts where he vented against the production staff who he claimed did not take care of him in a hosting stint.

In a text message sent to Bandera, Malou Choa Fagar of TAPE Inc. kept mum about Ballesteros’ alleged suspension.

Master Showman German 'Kuya Germs' Moreno passes away

German Moreno, who is known in the showbiz industry as "Master Showman," has passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest at 3:20 a.m. on Friday.

Moreno's death came a year after he suffered from a stroke.

Nite is Moreno's nephew and co-host in GMA 7's "Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman."

"He passed on in the company of his family and friends. He lived a full life, touched so many hearts through the years, and helped make dreams come true for most of the biggest stars in the Philippine entertainment industry," he said.

"We are deeply saddened by his passing but we are comforted by the thought that his legacy will live on," he added.

Moreno or Kuya Germs, as he is called by friends and fans, was known for his loyalty and professionalism.

It was in January 2015 that Kuya Germs was hospitalized after suffering from a stroke and he had to rest for several months.

He returned to host "Walang Tulugan With the Master Showman" last June 2015.

Moreno was known as a star builder in his youth oriented show in the 1980s, That's Entertainment, that included a roster of popular artists including Lea Salonga, Manilyn Reynes, Gladys Reyes, Judy Ann Santos, Janno Gibbs, Billy Crawford, Donna Cruz, Ramon Christopher, and Lotlot de Leon.

He also initiated the "Walk of Fame" in Eastwood, Quezon City, whch is the local counterpart of the "Walk of Fame" in Hollywood, USA to recognize artists, broadcasters, singers and others who made significant contributions to the showbiz industry.

Kuya Germs had humble beginnings as he started as a utility worker at the once popular Clover Theater in Manila in the 1950s. He became a stage actor and later a film star.

Maine apologizes to Julie Anne backstage at Sunday Pinasaya

Kung napuno ng kasiyahan at kilig ang stage ng Sunday Pinasaya ngayong araw, December 13, lingid sa kaalaman ng marami ay mayroon palang naganap na iyakan sa backstage.

Ito ay dahil sa paghaharap nina Julie Anne San Jose at Maine Mendoza sa dressing room.

Si Julie Anne ay mainstay sa naturang comedy-musical program ng GMA Network, habang si Maine naman ay special guest ngayong araw.

Marian Rivera on Thursday took to Instagram to show the world its first glimpse of Maria Letizia, her baby with husband Dingdong Dantes.

"41 weeks akong nag hintay , 18 hrs na nag labor. Sa mga oras na iyon, hindi ko inaasahang makakaya ko ang lahat. Pero dahil andiyan ka sa tabi ko, sa iyo ako kumuha ng lakas. Salamat Mahal ko. @dongdantes," she wrote on the caption.

Ken Chan reveals attracting male admirers as 'Destiny Rose'

Naranasan na ni Ken Chan ang matinding dusa ng mga babae kapag inaayusan ang mga ito.

Sa pag-ayos na lang kay Ken bilang isang transgender sa Destiny Rose ay inaabot nang higit na apat na oras.

“Actually, two hours to put on makeup, pati sa pag-ayos ng buhok; kailangan kasi flawless ang dating—yung diyosa lang!

“’Tapos another two hours para sa pagsuot ng mga panloob ko sa damit ni Destiny Rose.

“May mga paddings ako na nilalagay para flat siya sa area na iyon!” sabay tawa ni Ken.

Kasama na rin daw ang pagpili ng tamang shoes, stockings, accessories, at pati na ang nails ay inaabala ng glam team ni Ken.

“Iba-iba ang glam team namin for Destiny Rose; iba sa makeup, sa buhok, at sa damit.”

In character si Ken Chan bilang Destiny Rose habang kausap siya ng ilang member ng media na bumisita sa set ng naturang teleserye noong nakaraang November 25, Miyerkules, sa Matandang Balara, Quezon City.

Saad pa niya, “Plus may acting coach pa ako on the side para hindi ako mawala sa character.

“May tendency kasing maging over ako sa character kaya tino-tone down namin especially ang boses ko.

“Pati na sa mga paggalaw ko, kailangan tamang-tama lang; parati ko raw isipin na babae ako at hindi bading.

“Thankful naman ako kina Sir Michael de Mesa at kay Katrina Halili kasi kasama sila sa mga nagbabantay sa pag-arte ko.

“One time sinabihan ako ni Sir Michael na huwag kong sobrahan ang pag-emote, yung tamang timpla lang.

“Si Katrina naman, binabantayan niya ang pagkilos ko; may kilos daw kasi ako na para akong sumasali sa beauty contest.

“Sabi niya, ‘Uy, nasa opisina ka, wala ka sa beauty pageant, umayos ka!’ sabay nagtatawanan kami kasi tama naman siya!”

MALE ADMIRERS. Ayon kay Ken, hindi raw siya bumibitaw sa kanyang character bilang si Destiny Rose kapag nasa set na raw siya ng kanilang taping.

Yun daw kasi ang natutunan niya sa isang acting workshop na huwag bibitaw para consistent siya sa kanyang performance.

“As much as possible, ayokong bumitaw talaga; kapag naipasok ko na ang character ni Destiny Rose sa pagkatao ko, yun na ‘yon.

“Hindi na siya mawawala hanggang matapos ang taping namin,  kaya pati mga tao sa production.

"Nagugulat sila na kahit breaktime namin, very Destiny Rose pa rin ako.

"From the way I walk, talk hanggang sa pag-upo ko, may tatak-Destiny Rose.

“May mga nagtataka kung bakit gano’n ako, puwede naman daw magpahinga ako saglit from my character.

“Puwede naman iyon, pero para sa akin, gusto ko tuluy-tuloy lang ako para hindi mawala,” diin pa ni Ken.

Isa pang kuwento niya, meron na nga raw mga lalaki na gustong makipagkilala sa kanya sa social media.

“May isang guy na gustong makipagkilala ’tapos may isa pang gustong mag-propose!

“Ewan ko ba kung serious sila pero kung totoo man, effective ang pagganap ko as Destiny Rose.

“Siyempre nagpasalamat na lang ako sa mga ito dahil pinapanood nila ako.

"Sinasabi ko naman parati na aktingan lang ito, pero nakakatuwa na may mga sumeseryoso kahit alam nilang TV drama lang ito.”

So ine-enjoy na ba ni Ken ang kanyang pagiging transwoman in real life?

“Medyo! Echos!!!” malakas na tawa ni Ken, “Kailangan ko lang i-enjoy kasi ang saya naming lahat sa set.

“Lalo na at maganda ang ratings namin at parati kaming nagte-trending; doon ako nag-e-enjoy talaga.

“As for being Destiny Rose, kasama ito sa package ng pagiging artista ko sa teleserye namin.
