Lagerfeld’s Chanel made $11 billion in his last year
Chanel clocked up sales of nearly 10 billion euros ($11.1 billion) in its final year under the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, the French label said Monday.
The notoriously secretive brand owned by the Wertheimer family, which has only reported its results publicly twice in its 109-year history, said sales rose more than 10 percent in 2018.
Chanel’s iconic creator — who had so dominated fashion that he was called the “Kaiser” — died of cancer in February aged 85.
Lagerfeld worked until the end, and despite his final illness his creations “achieved double-digit growth with great performances in leather goods and ready-to-wear”, the label said.
Profits rose to close to $3 billion, with finance chief Philippe Blondiaux hailing “another strong year”.
The performance was particularly strong given that the fashion house had sunk $1 billion into upping its digital presence, Blondiaux said, as well as securing “supply chains… and strengthening social and environmental commitments.”
He said its perfume and beauty division had also shown rapid growth with the launch of new fragrances such as Coco Mademoiselle and Bleu de Chanel.
Chanel is regarded as one of the world’s richest and most stable fashion brands, said to be worth in excess of $20 billion.
Only rival Paris house Louis Vuitton has more financial clout, although much of its profits come from its luggage and handbag business.
In terms of turnover, it is also comes second behind Vuitton, whose owners LVMH reported sales of “well over $10 billion” in 2018.
The results were released on the eve of Paris men’s fashion week, where a special event will honour Lagerfeld in the city’s vast Grand Palais, the scene of some of his greatest catwalk triumphs.
Chanel opened its books for the first time last year, showing that its owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer were the fourth and fifth richest people in France and among the 40 wealthiest on the planet.

Will painting your teeth pink be the next big beauty trend?
Forget about flashing your pearly whites this holiday season: rainbow-colored teeth are in, apparently.
The latest offbeat beauty trend is for teeth that have been painted a colorful hue, such as pink, green, or even metallic copper, thanks to the launch of Chrom Temporary Tooth Polish.
The product, which acts like a nail polish but for your gnashers, can be used to color in your entire mouth, or just highlight one or two “accent teeth.” The formula, which lasts for up to 24 hours but can be removed in seconds, claims to be both smudge-free and taste-free, and comes in ten vibrant shades.
“We see this becoming commonplace — everything from a club vibe to an everyday workplace fashion accent,” the brand’s creator, David Silverstein, told the New York Post. He added: “Perhaps you go to work with one tooth [that] matches your nail polish or your hair color.”
If blue teeth isn’t an interesting enough look for you, don’t panic: according to the publication, a glitter version of the product is also in the works.
The beauty trend for all things rainbow-colored has been dominating the industry for some time now, with “rainbow hair” turning into a major craze, thanks to various reincarnations such as “Brony hair”, which was inspired by the 1980s TV franchise “My Little Pony”, “LaCroix Hair” inspired by the soda water brand’s candy-hued packaging, and neon hair which rose to prominence in the summer of last year. Dolce & Gabbana explore DNA with star-filled cast
MILAN (AP) — Milan designers are embracing women of all shapes, sizes and ages, even if the young, thin model prevailed during this week’s previews for next spring and summer.
Marni’s runway included women of different sizes while Dolce & Gabbana continued their embrace of models in a range of ages and sizes for their DNA runway show on Sunday.
Highlights from Sunday’s show, the fifth day of previews of womenswear for next spring and summer:
Dolce & Gabbana pay tribute to heritage
Dolce & Gabbana retraced their DNA by bringing back some of their most famous models: Carla Bruni in a brocade suit, Monica Belluci in a fitted polka-dot dress, Eva Herzigova in a frothy black chiffon number, and a caped Isabel Rosselilni, who walked with her children Roberto and Elettra carrying her young son.
In the brand’s bid for inclusion, they sent grandmothers with granddaughters, husbands and wives, lesbian couples and curvy models, including Ashley Graham.
Cardi B kept a careful eye on the collection from her front-row seat, taking off her animal skin-covered D&G sunglasses to take in the steady stream of flash. Her eyes stayed glued on an embroidered shawl jacket with mini-skirt, mouthing, “I like that,” with a sassy shoulder shake.
The elaborate collection by Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana displayed the designers’ unrivaled aptitude for over-the-top looks with a something-for-everyone range. There were pretty layered floral dresses with jeweled sandals, bejeweled biker jackets with tuxedo tails, raw jute fabrics in fringed day suits and tiered dresses in sparkly organza.
While the collection incorporated the duo’s well-known motifs, including prints of the Madonna, Sicilian references and floral prints, there was also a pointed message on one netted top: “Fatto a Mano,” or “handmade,” to underline the commitment to craftsmanship.
The designers also provided a subtle hint of an upcoming project for Milan and Rome: a Christmas market inside the Rinascente department stores featuring Dolce&Gabbana styled appliances and their own range of the Milan Christmas cake, panettone, with flavors from their beloved Sicily. The hints included a Santa Claus figurine carried by a model and a print that echoes the unique panettone tin.
The lightness of being Armani
Giorgio Armani’s collection for next spring and summer was meticulously sculptured out of iridescent, dreamy blue, gray and pink textiles that collect the light. The main point of contrast, a bright fuchsia, which has become the power color of the season in Milan.
The looks had what the designer called “a liquid lightness,” derived from a range of understated colors — save for a touch of fuchsia.
“It is all mixed and very subtle in terms of colors. The color this time gave form to the clothes,” Armani said backstage.
The silhouette was elongated, often with a layer of organza that wrapped the figure or was layered over trousers for a misty effect. A plexiglass bustier gave shape to a micro-pleated dress.
Armani continued his mastery of the jacket with fluid jackets over straight trousers, or slim-fitting leather jackets with trousers colorful water color prints, and blousons with a long layer of tulle spilling out. One dramatic cape-like jacket had exaggerated military detailing on the shoulders, worn over a shimmering organza fitted suit.
The collection had futuristic touches, from a cellophane look on footwear to mesh carryalls.
“This is a woman who wants to be noticed,” the designer said. “She doesn’t slink away dressed as a man.”
Armani saluted the crowd wearing a jacket and tie instead of his usual dark blue T-shirt or sweater.
“You didn’t recognize me, did you?” he joked backstage.
Marni’s wake up call
The fashion crowd woke up early Sunday for a fashion call, only to go back to bed in the Marni showroom. Designer Francesco Risso’s latest kooky seating arrangement was a series of beds in the shape of an amphitheater.
Risso was exploring the classics in more ways than one. The silhouette was mostly classic and tailored, with edgy touches that gave the collection the air of a desperate, punk housewife. But he also incorporated elements from the ancient classical world, including prints with architectural elements — a departure from Marni’s traditional florals — and jewelry shaped like the Venus de Milo.
The art was all in the construction. Skirts were swept up like a sarong, worn with off the shoulder bustiers, but with sturdy fabrics that suggest the city and not light beachy fare. Risso put a new twist on the Roman toga in sleek, form-fitting textiles. Bomber jackets had half belts sewn into the back. Full-skirted dresses had front panels, some left as a blank canvass, others with prints.
Risso included in his model casting average-size women, who made clear the collections can have a broad audience.
Colors ranged from soft creams and yellows to louder reds and blues. Eye wear were dramatic pointy sunglasses.
Mission celebrates heritage looking to future
Missoni treated the fashion crowd to a sweeping view of the new Milan skyline of skyscrapers by architects Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind to celebrate its 65th year.
Creative director Angela Missoni said she chose the terrace overlooking the City Life quarter and beneath Mario Bellini’s silvery sculpture “Comet”, because the view represented “the most futuristic place in Milan.”
“This place is a dream. This place summarizes the future,” she said.
The looks for men and women were delicate in tone, weight and structure.
For women, Angela Missoni constructed layered works, incorporating fresh detailing like tiered ruffles and braided overlays of yarn, for a playful touch. The men’s looks were relaxed and functional, including kimono tops, long T-shirts and cardigans. CC

Mr. World PH bares official candidates for 2018
After a wave of three major global titles last year, the Philippines is set to make pageant history once again as it kicks off the preliminaries for the Mister World Philippines 2018 competition.
This year’s Mr. World Philippines competition is a prelude to the much-anticipated “the search for the world’s most desirable man,” the biennial Mr. World pageant which will be held in Manila for the very first time on January 27, 2019 at Resorts World Manila.
To jumpstart the country on its journey towards bringing home the Mr. World title, 16 male contestants from across the country shall compete in the preliminary competition to be held on September 15 at Resorts World Manila.
The preliminary screening held last August 14 at House Manila already yielded 16 names which will later be joined by more aspirants from provinces and a few others selected through a special process to complete the list.
On Tuesday, September 4, candidates for the preliminary eliminations were officially launched before the media. They are as follows:
1. Joy Jerome Evangelista
2. Jody Baines Saliba
3. Karl Louie Aragon
4. Abdullah Sharif Cheng
5. Denver Hernandez
6. Wilfred Placencia Jr.
7. Reymart Regis
8. Marco Poli
9. Robin Hanrath
10. Mark Jero Bagaporo
11. Miguel De Castro
12. Amir Don Abo
13. Ricardo De Jesus
14. Joshua Reginald Banatin
15. Mark Comiso
16. Ameen Sardouk
The organizers of the Miss World Philippines Organization, which also manages the Mr. World Philippines franchise, aims to create equal footing between male and female pageants. In the Philippines, female pageantry – moreover the winners in these titular competitions – are put on a pedestal as if revered almost like queens.
However, the same glorification is not exactly given to male pageants and its title winners in the Philippines. This is why the organization goals to expose the Filipino pageant fans into the male side of beauty contents and level the playing field.
As for fashion designer Bessie Besana, they wanted to have somebody that “could represent the country in the perspective of a male pageant” and could showcase the Filipino man to the world.
The contenders are a good mix of pure and half-breed Filipinos.
For Miss World Philippines National Director Arnold Vegafria, whoever would be chosen as winner would be the ambassador of the organization so he would have to know how to “communicate with a good pleasing personality, and most especially possess good attitude.”

Saudi Arabia to host first Arab Fashion Week
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia is set to host in March its first ever Arab Fashion Week, the Arab Fashion Council announced Monday, overturning decades of draconian policies on arts and entertainment.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the powerful heir to the Saudi throne, has been leading a drive to reform the country’s dependence on oil, including expanding the private sector and empowering women.
The Dubai-based Arab Fashion Council said on its website that fashion week would be held in Riyadh from March 26 to March 31, with a second edition already scheduled for October.
Arab Fashion Week will take place at Riyadh’s eco-friendly Apex Center, a white honeycomb-like venue designed by the late celebrated Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.
In December, the Arab Fashion Council announced the opening of a regional office in Riyadh and named Saudi Princess Noura Bint Faisal Al-Saud as its honorary president.
“The first Arab Fashion Week in Riyadh will be more than a world-class event, it is a catalyst through which we believe the fashion sector will lead other economic sectors such as tourism, hospitality, travel, and trade,” Princess Noura said in a statement on the council’s website.
Listed as an international fashion week alongside Paris and Milan, the twice-yearly Arab Fashion Week offers exclusively see-now-buy-now collections and pre-collections.
The line-up for the Riyadh event has not been revealed yet and it remains unclear whether it will be limited to modest designs in accordance with the strict dress code observed in Saudi Arabia.
The Gulf kingdom, which has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on women, requires them to wear, by law, a loose-fitting abaya robe to shroud their bodies in public.
Earlier this month, a senior Saudi cleric said Saudi women should not be “forced to wear abayas”.
The comment was made by Sheikh Abdullah al-Mutlak, a member of the Council of Scholars — the kingdom’s highest religious body.
The government has not said whether it will change the law.
But Prince Mohammed has introduced over the past months a series of reforms in favor of women.
In January, Saudi women were allowed for the first time ever to enter a football stadium to watch a game and the kingdom is also opening several sectors of the workplace to women.
Saudi Arabia has also announced an end to a longstanding ban on women driving, which is to take effect in June.
In the past, Arab Fashion Week have been hosted so far exclusively by Gulf fashion capital Dubai and have included runway darlings Marchesa and Tony Ward.
Dubai will continue to host its own parallel Arab Fashion Week, with the sixth edition slotted for May 9 to May 12. /cbb

Hair trends at London Fashion Week: Bringing back the center part
Here are three ways to wear the look, straight off the catwalks.
Sleek and straight
Julien Macdonald, Roksanda and Jasper Conran were just three of the fashion greats to declare loose, poker-straight tresses the go-to hair trend of Spring 2018. The Julien Macdonald show offered up a masterclass in sleek, shiny blow dries with just the right amount of volume, while the models at Roksanda wore their styles flatter and tucked behind the ears. Things were a little more tousled and laid-back at Jasper Conran.
Pinned back
A center parting is an easy way to elevate simple updos, as both Emilia Wickstead and Burberry proved with their on-trend low ponytails. While the models at Emilia Wickstead sported slightly tousled styles, the Burberry look, with its faintly crooked parting and loose baby hairs, gave the overall effect a back-to-school edge.
Textured
Christopher Kane and Paula Knorr added texture to the look, by keeping things damp and frizzy. Kane’s models had their hair pulled tightly back into a ponytail, while some of the models at Paula Knorr sported slicked-down roots with drier ends. JB

Netizens react as Melania Trump wears Monique Lhuillier gown
US First Lady Melania Trump wore a silk gown by Filipino designer Monique Lhuillier to the Ford’s Theatre Gala, drawing both praise and criticism from netizens.
Lhuillier herself posted photos of the first lady last Monday on her Facebook Page with the caption “Elegant in silk!”
One photo showed US President Donald Trump holding her hand as they exited the stage.
The post has since received almost 500 likes or reactions. Some posted about how the beautiful gown matched the “classy” and beautiful first lady while others criticized Lhuillier for letting the controversial first lady wear her gown.
“Ugh! I love you and I wish you wouldn’t dress this family,” one Facebook user commented. But another said, “Monique, I love you more.”
Another user gave a thumbs down emoji after posting that Lhuillier is “a daughter of immigrants.”
Several designers have refused to dress Melania Trump because of her husband’s controversial decisions and rhetoric. Some of them used to design outfits for former first lady Michelle Obama.
According to Vogue, among the fashion designers who said they won’t dress the new first lady are Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Christian Siriano, Naeem Khan, Derek Lam and Sophie Thelleat.
Meanwhile, Melania Trump had worn dresses from Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana. Tommy Hilfiger also defended the first lady, saying any designer should be proud to dress her. KS/JE

Google launches new shopping tool ‘Style Ideas’
Google has just announced an update to its Image Search app which enables you to see what a fashion item you’re interested in would look like worn on a model or blogger.
The new Style Ideas feature could seem quite basic at first. But haven’t we all all asked ourselves how a jacket or dress would sit on the waist or shoulders in real life, or wondered which pants would go with a pair of shoes we’re eyeing?
The idea is simple: in addition to the standard retail photo of a fashion product, Google will show you other photos of the same item worn by one of the brand’s official models or a blogger, who has teamed it with other things.
“With Style Ideas, you can see real-life options of what bag and jeans [would] look stellar with those red high heels you’ve been eyeing,” Google explained in a blog post.
“Style Ideas” is currently only available in Image Search on mobile web and in the Google app for Android. JB

United Air bars girls with leggings, ignites Twitter storm
WASHINGTON — United Airlines found itself at the center of a social media storm after it barred two girls from boarding a flight in Denver on Sunday because they were wearing leggings.
Another girl who was also wearing leggings was allowed to board the flight from Denver International Airport to Minneapolis after she changed, a witness said.
The incident was reported on Twitter by Shannon Watts — founder of fun reform group Moms Demand Action — who was a passenger at the airport waiting to board another flight to Mexico.
“She’s forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings or they can’t board,” she said. “Since when does @united police women’s clothing?”
“A 10-year-old girl in gray leggings,” she added of one of the girls. “She looked normal and appropriate.”
However, United Airlines maintained its support for the gate agent’s decision in its own series of tweets.
Later, it clarified that the girls prevented from boarding were “pass riders” — those who fly free or at heavily reduced rates because they are airline employees or their relatives.
“Our regular passengers are not going to be denied boarding because they are wearing leggings or yoga pants,” a spokesman told The Washington Post.
“But when flying as a pass traveler, we require pass travelers to follow rules, and that is one of those rules.”
That didn’t stop a tsunami of ridicule against the airline on social media for what critics called sexist and intrusive actions.
“@united Leggings are business attire for 10 year olds. Their business is being children,” actress Patricia Arquette tweeted.
Model Chrissy Teigen weighed in: “I have flown united before with literally no pants on. Just a top as a dress.”
“Next time I will wear only jeans and a scarf,” she added. CBB/rga

Raf Simons pays homage to America in Calvin Klein debut
NEW YORK—Raf Simons, considered one of the finest designers of his generation, made his debut for Calvin Klein on Friday, offering a tribute to America in one of the most eagerly awaited New York shows in years.
A-listers Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker, former Calvin Klein model Brooke Shields and current model Millie Bobby Brown, the 12-year-old star of Netflix hit “Stranger Things,” were the guests of honor.
Other guests were film director Sofia Coppola and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at the label’s Garment District headquarters, which reportedly archives every Calvin Klein item ever designed.
The 49-year-old Belgian former creative director for Christian Dior sent out men’s and women’s wear in what the program called an homage to America, a contrast of sports chic and double-breasted suiting.
Simons, whose career has straddled Europe and America, offered an outsider’s take on the diversity that makes up the contemporary United States as part of his mission to revive the iconic New York label best known for its racy underwear ads decades ago.
There was sharp suiting, denim, bat-wing style shoes for women, cowboy boots, plastic coated outerwear and dresses finished with feathers, an array of workwear, western wear and handcrafted quilting.
From the look that shouted modern urban, to the white bandanas sent to guests to promote diversity and the closing track — David Bowie’s “This Is Not America” — it was hard not to see shade being thrown at President Donald Trump and his administration’s assault on immigration.
Past and future
“All these different people with different styles and dress codes. It’s the future, the past, Art Deco, the city, the American West,” wrote Simons in the program notes.
“Not one era, not one thing, not one look. It is the coming together of different characters and different individuals, just like America itself. It is the unique beauty and emotion of America.”
Simons emerged at the end with Pieter Mulier, his long-term colleague and former right-hand man at Dior, before being mobbed backstage by well-wishers.
From the ceiling hung distressed fabrics and balls of wool, in a set designed by Ruby, who was born to a Dutch mother and American father, and whose work features in museums such as the Tate Modern.
Ruby has cited, among his influences, hip-hop, urban gangs, graffiti, prisons, globalization, violence, art history, as well as “American domination and decline.”
Calvin Klein last year put Simons in charge of the entire brand’s creative strategy, uniting all its clothing, underwear and jeans under one vision as it seeks to grow to $10 billion in global retail sales.
Simons, who also runs his eponymous label, was previously best known for breathing life into Dior after John Galliano was fired in 2012 following an outcry over anti-Semitic insults he made in a Paris bar.
“Not since Mr Klein himself was at the company has it been led by one creative visionary, and I am confident that this decision will drive the Calvin Klein brand and have a significant impact,” said CEO Steve Shiffman at the time.
Changing of guard
“I really liked it,” Imran Amed, founder of the London-based Business of Fashion website, told Agence France-Presse after the show.
“It’s quite a departure. When you change creative directors, part of the reason you do that is to get a new energy, a new direction, and I think they very successfully achieved that,” he added.
“That he dared to try to live up to the founder’s legacy and say something bigger and more visceral with his clothes — could make all the difference,” wrote New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman.
Here are other highlights of fashion week day two:
— Oday Shankar, a red carpet designer with Iraqi roots, presented typically elegant evening wear in an personal show that he said was inspired by overcoming difficulties in life and “creating something beautiful.”
There were his trademark billowing, two-tone gowns and pleated skirts, and sequined tweed that glittered and hugged the figure.
— Retailer Kate Spade invited guests to sip mimosas and nibble blinis with caviar at The Russian Tea Room in tribute to 1920s Paris and “heroines who defy expectations.”
Models sashayed on a leopard print platform to the sound of a waltz. It was a very feminine collection with lots of red and poppies, with a stand-out purse in the shape of a chocolate cake with cherries on top.

DKNY’s take on the Year of the Rooster
To honor the Year of the Rooster, DKNY creative directors Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne envision a collection of essentials that seamlessly blend with the Pre-Spring 2017 wardrobe. The starting point: the 10th sign of the Chinese Zodiac, a confident and loyal animal.
To express a streetwise sensibility, the designers created a hand-drawn rooster icon that abstractly spells out the letters DKNY. The rooster appears printed, embossed and embroidered across apparel and accessories executed in scarlet, black and gold, as tradition would have it. The result is a graphic yet festive look.
Pre-Spring 2017 silhouettes and fabrications continue to evolve. Tradition meets modernity with flocked lace mini-dresses. Tailoring meets sport with embossed sweatshirts and paneled, patchwork column dresses. Pinstripes remain a core source of inspiration that the designers deconstruct. Paneled sweaters and contrast pinstripe crewnecks harken to the brand’s roots.
Classic court trainers, in low- and high-top styles, interpret brand codes like pinstripes in slick, high-shine materials, such as patent and nappa leather.
Accessories heighten the festive spirit. Playful, easy cross-bodies define the new evening bag. Mini backpacks provide a chic take on sport, color-block and paneled in scarlet and black leather with streaks of gold. Wristlets, tech cases and clutches offer perfect options.

Victoria’s Secret rocks Paris with $3M bra and Lady Gaga
PARIS — The laciest, if not raciest, catwalk event of the year — aka, the Victoria’s Secret fashion show — took place Wednesday night in in the City of Light. Among the takeaways: performances by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid joining forces, as well as a $3 million Fantasy bra modelled by Jasmine Tookes. Here are the highlights of the Paris show:
Angels in red
Guests shuffled into the huge steel-and-glass atrium of Paris’ Grand Palais to the sound of a string orchestra playing softly from a huge Arc de Triomphe decor.
The calm lasted only a few seconds, however, and was broken by the flash of red neon lights and bold rock music blasting out to announce the start of the 40-minute presentation, which infected the cheering guests.
Swedish model Elsa Hosk strutted out fittingly with electric energy in a cropped bustier — enveloped in a huge, three-dimensional red Chinese dragon; Kendall Jenner — in blood red — wore thigh-high boots, a long-line plunging bra and suede angel wing and Gigi Hadid looked like she would take off in flight, sporting a hand-painted cape with an Aztec-pattern that billowed as she walked.
The high-octane show was divided into six thematic sections, reflected in the colorful styles that bore inches of bare skin: Road Ahead, Mountain Romance, Pink Nation, Secret Angel, Dark Angel and Bright Night Angel.
The signature wings fluttered throughout — in feather, silk, gold gild, suede and Swarovski crystal.
“Not only do the wings get bigger but we tap into new artisans and people who do things with 3-D printing … that’s always the wonderful thing about working on the show,” said Victoria’s Secret Executive Producer Monica Mitro.
As the show ended, a million pieces of glittered ribbon fell on the angels and the adoring crowds.
Gaga, Mars, The Weeknd
With a retro bleached hairstyle, Lady Gaga gave a rousing and gutsy live performance of “Million Reasons” to the crowd, and appeared again for “A-YO.”
At one point her microphone got stuck in the tassels of her dark cowboy hat, but this didn’t stop the consummate professional, who continued singing “John Wayne” as Victoria’s Secret models danced with her and crisscrossed the runway rhythmically to the beat.
As the 30-year-old popstar ended her set, she walked over to kiss Hadid’s mother, reality TV star Yolanda Hadid, in her front row seat. (Before the show, Gaga treated her Instagram followers to a photo of herself in silver Victoria’s Secret underwear).
Bruno Mars also performed several times, ramping up the energy and using the catwalk as his stage — in signature shades, with tuxedo-wearing backing dancers jiving behind him.
The American singer had guests jumping up and down for funky performances of “24K Magic” and “Chunky.”
But it was perhaps The Weeknd that got the most cheers of the night. The singer serenaded Bella Hadid — with whom he has been romantically linked — with his hit song “Starboy,” and almost followed her up the catwalk as she walked in a lace gown with silk organza corset.
$3 Million Fantasy Bra
The Victoria’s Secret Fantasy bra the 25-year-old Jasmine Tookes was selected to wear is considered the piece de resistance of the brand’s runway display.
The bra, glimmering with thousands of gemstones, was presented like crown jewels ahead of the show. An incredible work of art, it was designed by Eddie Borgo and hand-crafted over 700 hours with gems from jeweler AWMouzannar.
“It is so beautiful. It’s covered in white diamonds and emeralds and it has about 9,000 gemstones. It cost $3 million — so stunning,” gushed Tookes backstage while she was having her hair done.
It’s the third time a black model has been chosen to model the Fantasy Bra.
Tookes said the garment was constructed on a mold of her upper body, literally made to measure.
While the bra may be perfect for the runway presentation, Tookes joked she probably wouldn’t want to go for a jog in it, given its weight.
“It’s very heavy; it weighs more than 450 karats. It weighs down on my shoulders a little bit, but it’s so worth it,” she said, cheekily adding: “I might jog out of this show with it though.”
A (Hadid) family affair
Hadid, 52, was the proudest of mothers Wednesday night.
For the first time, the former model could boast that Bella was included in the Victoria’s Secret model line-up as well as Gigi for 2016.
“Last year, Gigi got it and Bella didn’t get it and I felt awkward being there having Bella at home. And this year, it’s just so perfect because they’re both here. We’re celebrating, the sisters together,” she told The AP.
The three posed for cameras and kissed on the pink carpet following the collection — in a show of family love.
“It’s all surreal. I mean, I came here when I was 16, modeling. So many years have gone by and to be here with both my girls.it’s emotional. I keep looking at them and pinching myself. Whoever thought that this would happen?” she added.
The original angel
She was one of the original Victoria’s Secret models back in 1995.
Now at 51 years old — and just as youthful-looking — Veronica Webb spoke to the AP about the challenges and particularities of the famed fashion show that she began 21 years ago.
“I was in the first Victoria’s Secret show and it was one of the most challenging bookings that I ever did because, obviously, if you’re in a room and everyone else is dressed and you’re in your underwear it’s a little bit embarrassing,” she said, laughing.
Webb, who made history as the first African-American to ever have a cosmetics contract, also recalled how important the experience boosted her professional life.
“It was one of the proudest moments of my career also because it took so much discipline and making so many fitness goals to get there,” she said.
Even Victoria’s Secret models get nervous
Brazilian beauty Lais Ribeiro physically jumped when a loudspeaker bellowed there was just one hour until show time.
“Butterflies just came stronger in my stomach. I’m getting very, very excited,” Ribeiro, 26, told The Associated Press.
Ribeiro knows more than most about the hidden dangers in a show such as this, where models in towering heels can injure themselves. She hurt her foot as a Victoria’s Secret Angel three years ago.
“What am I scared of? I twisted my ankle and kind of broke my foot in the rehearsal three years ago. So I’m always scared of the high heels (that might make) me miss this amazing show,” she said.
Security tight
Hours before Wednesday’s show began, hundreds of meters in the area around Paris’ Grand Palais and the Champs Elysées avenue were in near lock-down, barricaded with passing tourists and fashionistas alike getting frisked.
Bomb squad dogs sniffed out every single bag that entered the Grand Palais where the fashion show took place.
Paris remains in a state of emergency following last November’s Paris attacks at a concert hall and various spots around the capital.
City of Angels
The Angels, as Victoria’s Secret top models are known, have taken Paris — and their Instagram accounts — by storm since flying into the City of Light on Sunday night.
Led by Alessandra Ambrosio, the troupe posed for photos outside the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday morning as gob-smacked tourists stopped to take in the incredible views, which included the monument.
Josephine Skriver, Adriana Lima, Lily Donaldson, Hosk, Lily Aldridge and Tookes wore assorted Angels T-shirts and skinny, figure-hugging black jeans.
But the fun continued online, with Lima posting a from-behind shot of her and Martha Hunt wearing thigh-high boots during the show’s preparations.
Mere mortals may use a face mask ahead of a glamorous night out — but these are Angels, and terrestrial rules don’t apply.
Trending online were photos of some of the models using 24-karat gold sheet masks to prepare for the 2016 show.

Bench Body heats up New York Fashion Week–a first for a Filipino brand
Homegrown lifestyle brand Bench scored big this week after successfully staging its first-ever show at New York Fashion Week Men’s Spring Summer 2017 collections—the first Filipino company to present in the Big Apple.
Bench Body, the brand’s underwear line, collaborated with New York brand and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Cadet for the show, directed by Ariel Lozada. It was held on Monday in a loft location called Michelson Studio in downtown Manhattan.
The fashion week presentation is Bench’s first major move as it makes inroads into New York, making good its goal to truly go global. Apart from stores in China, Singapore and the Middle East, the brand now has outlets in California and Guam.
“I am happy that our introduction to the New York market turned out well,” Chan told Inquirer Lifestyle. “The show was well-received, the market liked our product, and the right press came,” he added.
Noel Manapat, who headed the styling team, said “publications such as GQ, Esquire, Manifesto, among others” attended Monday’s show, which featured a motley of male models from North America and Europe, headed by Filipino-Canadian Paolo Roldan who has starred in Bench campaigns.
“Our casting director, Brent Chua, assembled a diverse set of faces, both new and current. We mixed the alpha males with the skinny fashion types, atypical of how we cast shows in Manila,” said Manapat.
Up-and-coming models like Trevor Signorino and Ivo Buchta, as well as William Los and Malik Lindo, joined Roldan in the lineup, which also had two female models in the mix.
Based on the official images shared to the Inquirer, the beefcake crew preened in a collection of vivid-print skivvies and briefs, inspired by island prints, in the venue adorned with fishing nets. The show’s theme is “Forever Summer.”
Behemoth
Chan started Bench in 1987 as a T-shirt brand; it has grown into an apparel and lifestyle behemoth, with a vast merchandise mix that now also includes footwear, fragrances, bath implements, accessories and a full clothing range, and sub-labels that cater to men, women and children.
The Bench underwear show is a major fashion extravaganza held every couple of years, which brings together not just models from the United States and Europe, but also the country’s top celebrities who are also Bench endorsers. (No underwear show is planned in the Philippines this year, according to Bench.)
Bench is known for its marketing campaigns that often push boundaries. Showing in New York City may be one of its boldest moves yet.
“But it is just the start,” said Chan, “and the future is uncertain but exciting. We’ll take it one step at a time.”

LOOK: Japanese chic, summer-themed lollipops
Modish lollipops. These are just one of the Japanese people’s fascinations for things outré.
Every season, Japanese customers wait for Shinri Tezuka’s lollipop fashion line–this summer season, the designs of the lollipop illustrate the humid, sunny and cool weathers experienced in her country.
Tezuka, a 26-year-old Japanese candy creator, sculpts exquisite lollipops into intricate designs. This lollipop designing technique is called Amezaiku, and this dates back to the 8th century. It became popular during the Edo period, according to Japanese pop culture site Rocket News.
Tezuka opened his lollipop store, Asakusa Amezaiku Ameshin, in two locations in Japan–one in the district of Asakusa and another in Tokyo Skytree.

Beyonce launches active wear line for women
NEW YORK — Beyonce is launching an active wear line for women next month.
The singer announced the 2016 spring/summer collection Thursday called Ivy Park. It’s a collaboration with Sir Philip Green of the retail giant Arcadia Group. The collection will be available April 14.
Beyonce said in a statement that she lives “in my work out clothes but I didn’t feel there was an athletic brand that spoke to me.” She said she wants the collection to “inspire women who understand that beauty is more than your physical appearance.”
Beyonce also launched IvyPark.com and released a video showing the pop star modeling the new clothes. Her daughter, Blue Ivy, also appears in the video.
The line will be available online and in Topshop stores, Nordstrom, Selfridges and others.

Kylie Lip Kits Were Restocked and Sold Out In Just 20 Minutes
When Kylie Jenner announced that she was restocking all eight of her
Kylie Lip Kit colors, we figured everyone got their cash and credit
cards ready in case it gets sold out fast again like the last time. Well, unluckily for some, the restocked lip kits are also sold out and it only took 20 minutes.
Aside from individually selling the lippies, Kylie Cosmetics also decided to sell a set of all eight of them in the box. This was probably enough motivation for everyone to start crowding the website because it eventually crashed because of the amount of shoppers that were ordering and hoping to get their hands on their own Lip Kit.
This may be sad for those who have been vying for their own lippy since day one, but hey, you can still get dupes that are as good from your nearby cosmetic store while waiting for the next restock.

Israel holds its first transgender beauty contest
TEL AVIV, Israel — Nearly 30 transgender women strutted down the catwalk in skinny jeans, crop tops and stiletto heels at a Tel Aviv club on Thursday, vying for a chance to enter the first “Miss Trans Israel” beauty pageant.
Tel Aviv has emerged as one of the world’s most gay-friendly travel destinations, standing in sharp contrast to most of the rest of the Middle East, where gays can face persecution.
Israela Stephanie Lev, the pageant’s organizer, said that in the past it was “terrible” living as a transgender woman in Israel. But today, people are more accepting, she said.
“Definitely we are achieving, enlightening the people to accept and empower transsexuals,” she said.
Among the contestants was Talleen Abu Hanna, a 21-year-old from a Catholic Arab family in the northern city of Nazareth. She said she came to the audition because she wants to do something with her life.
“I have this something, I am a dancer, and I am a singer, I play the trumpet. I have something to give the people,” she said. Although Israel’s more conservative Arab society is often unaccepting of gays, Abu Hanna said her family accepts and supports her.
“We are normal people. This is normal,” she said.
Elian Nesiel, a 20-year-old contestant, said she believes that being transgender is “gradually accepted more and more.”
“Yes, it’s a process, like everything,” she said.
Israel is generally tolerant toward gays and transgender people. Gays openly serve in Israel’s military, as does at least one openly transgender soldier. In 1998, a transgender singer, Dana International, won the popular Eurovision song contest.
But homosexuality is shunned in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. Last year, an extremist ultra-Orthodox Jew stabbed a teenage girl to death at a Jerusalem Pride parade.
Finalists will compete at a pageant in May, and the winner will represent Israel at the Miss Trans Star International pageant to be held in Spain in August.

5 Tips on How to Do the Latest Beauty Trends
Looking at the spring/summer runways, the upcoming makeup trends are polar opposites. One one end, you’ve got Marni, Moschino, and Proenza Schouler going for a natural look, focusing on thicker lashes, full brows and dewy skin. Heavy contouring isn’t the thing anymore. On the other hand, you’ve got wild child ambitions with colorful and almost messy looks from Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, and Kenzo.
So the question is: How do I pull these off effectively? We asked MAC senior makeup artist Louise Zizzo, whose worked with Gwen Stefani, Cyndi Lauper, and Missy Elliot, just exactly what one can do to be able to strobe effectively and add a pop of color to the eyes without overhauling our makeup collection.
What will be the eyebrow trend this coming season?
It’s still all about having a full-on brow. One trend we have is how to look like you have little to no makeup at all and one way to [help pull that off] is to have thick and healthy brows. We need to make it look natural with very, thin feather-like and hair-like follicles strokes but not boxing them in and heavily outlining them.
How can one be able to do a pink or coral eyeshadow look without seeming as if they haven’t slept or their eyes look sore?
It’s about keeping [your choices] within the taupe and peaches. If the coral shade registers too orange on your skin rather than peach, that’s when it’s going to look like you have a sore eye. Keeping it on a more muted version rather than a vivid one will make those eyeshadows wearable.
You should also prep the eyes properly. If you don’t, any kind of shadow is going to oxidize so any shadow is going to look darker and more intense.
Strobing and highlighting using a powder can make pores larger. What can you advise to those women who want to get that highlighted look without using a cream?
If you can’t avoid using a powder, I would suggest just combining it first with a setting spray or solution. Adding that liquid would make it of a better consistency for dry skin and give you a naturally dewy look.
How can girls with oily skin use strobing to their advantage?
I would suggest using the strobe cream or highlighter underneath their foundation. A mattifying foundation would make it look like the glow is from within rather than an oily sheen or sweat over your face.
What are the five essential products needed to achieve this season’s looks?
A good red lipstick, a tube of waterproof mascara, a blue eyeliner, green eyeshadow, and satin-finish powders or products to help achieve strobing.

Seconds out, and legs out, as London Fashion Week enters the ring
LONDON - Proving that manliness can come wrapped in a skirt, design duo Sibling on Saturday stamped their style on London Fashion Week with a bold collection inspired by boxing and 1980s pop culture.
Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" opened the show, held in the basement of the neo-Gothic Victoria House in the heart of the British capital, a fitting soundtrack to the British pair's punchy but light-hearted designs.
The catwalk became a ringwalk as male models paraded in thick woollen hoodies decorated with medals, inspired by boxers' robes.
Punchbags were fashioned into fabric travel bags while the hand-strapping worn by fighters and martial artists provided the inspiration for a set of mittens.
But pop stars as well as pugilists were a driving force behind the collection, with the dominant royal blue palette a tribute to an album cover by 1980s pop diva Grace Jones, Sibling designer Cozette McCreery told AFP.
"The other person that was a huge influence was [Jean-Michel] Basquiat," one of contemporary art's leading stars and graffiti pioneer who died in 1988, she added.
The designers encouraged men to shun fashion conventions, showcasing a range of skirts also embellished with medals.
"We like legs," said McCreery. "As a girl, I'd be very happy if lots of guys showed more leg."
Earlier in the day, Astrid Andersen presented a comfortable and modern wardrobe inspired by urban street-wear, using a variety of materials including quilted nylon, denim and tweed in a collection she said was "focussed on fabric."
The palette ranged from grey to turquoise through to orange, and the young designer offered her own take on the male mitten, stretching all the way to the elbow.
Shows for the autumn-winter 2016 season began on Friday and will continue until Monday.
Men's Fashion Week will then up sticks and head for Milan and Paris before ending in New York.
Sales in men's fashion leapt by 22 percent in Britain to £13.5 billion ($19.6 billion, €18 billion) between 2009 to 2014, according to market researcher Mintel. — Agence France-Presse
