Apple expected to unveil new iPads, Mac in New York

NEW YORK — New iPads and Mac computers are expected Tuesday as part of an Apple event in New York.

The event is being held at an opera house in Brooklyn, suggesting Apple is pushing products focused on creativity and the arts.


As overall tablet sales decline, Apple has been promoting its high-end iPad Pro as ideal for artists, photographers and other creators. A new model is expected, as the last update came nearly 17 months ago.

There’s been speculation the new iPad Pro will adopt features found in the latest iPhones, including facial-recognition technology to unlock the device. Apple isn’t giving details about the event.

Apple may also release a new Mac, including a MacBook Air laptop, though higher-end MacBook Pro laptops just got refreshed in July.  /kga

Apple becomes 1st private company worth $1 trillion

NEW YORK — Apple became the first private-sector company to surpass $1 trillion in market value Thursday following its latest surge after reporting strong quarterly earnings.

Shares of Apple briefly hit $207.05 in late-morning trading, before retreating somewhat. The gains came after the iPhone maker reported strong earnings late Tuesday that prompted a two-day rally in the share price.

The company’s stock was at $206.85, up 2.7 percent near 1620 GMT. Apple said it currently has 4.83 billion shares outstanding.

As with other landmarks — such as the Dow crossing 25,000 for the first time —the Apple record is significant because of its resonance beyond the financial universe.

“The $1 trillion mark is more psychological, and sends a message of growth and size into the market,” said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

But many financial insiders view the record as a non-event, despite breaching the psychological barrier.

“There’s no real excitement on the trading desk,” said Karl Haeling of LBBW. “It’s one of those things that does not mean anything by itself… it’s more a testimony of the importance of Apple on the market.”

The landmark is the latest victory for Apple chief executive Tim Cook, who faced skepticism when he took reins of the iconic technology giant in 2011.

Credit to Cook 

He took over after the death of founder Steve Jobs, who was identified with launching many of Apple’s most iconic products, including the iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet.

But Cook has gradually won accolades from investors by pumping out a series of solid financial results and further spreading Apple’s products to China and other foreign markets.


On Tuesday, Apple reported that net profit jumped more than 30 percent to $11.5 billion. Revenue in the fiscal third quarter soared 17 percent to $53.3 billion from the same period a year earlier due to sales of pricier iPhones, online services and wearable devices.

The record also cements the continued supremacy of US technology companies to the broader market, with other large technology giants Amazon, Google-parent Alphabet, Microsoft and Facebook regularly rounding out the top five in market

Apple is the first private sector company to reach this level, but state oil company PetroChina briefly broke the $1 trillion barrier in 2007 during its initial public offering, but has since dropped back down. /ee

New Google Drive app allows users to back up entire computer

After amping up its Gmail file transfer services last March, Google is turning its Drive feature into the ultimate backup tool.

According to The Verge, the famed file storage and synchronization service will undergo an immense upgrade called the Backup and Sync feature.

Starting June 28, Google Drive users will no longer have to rely on files being simply stored on the Drive folder. Instead, Google will now be able to  monitor and back up files inside any folder including the desktop and even the entire Documents folder.

Theoretically, the app can back up an entire computer, but users must still be wary of their file sizes as the free Drive storage space is capped at 15GB. Those who wish to exceed beyond that must pay for extended storage, the report said.

The Backup and Sync app, meanwhile, is expected to eventually replace both the Google Drive app and the Google Photos Backup app. However, Google has recommended that business users stick with the existing Drive app for the meantime.

5 Tips on How to Do the Latest Beauty Trends

Looking at the spring/summer runways, the upcoming makeup trends are polar opposites. One one end, you’ve got Marni, Moschino, and Proenza Schouler going for a natural look, focusing on thicker lashes, full brows and dewy skin. Heavy contouring isn’t the thing anymore. On the other hand, you’ve got wild child ambitions with colorful and almost messy looks from Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, and Kenzo.

So the question is: How do I pull these off effectively? We asked MAC senior makeup artist Louise Zizzo, whose worked with Gwen Stefani, Cyndi Lauper, and Missy Elliot, just exactly what one can do to be able to strobe effectively and add a pop of color to the eyes without overhauling our makeup collection.

What will be the eyebrow trend this coming season?
It’s still all about having a full-on brow. One trend we have is how to look like you have little to no makeup at all and one way to [help pull that off] is to have thick and healthy brows. We need to make it look natural with very, thin feather-like and hair-like follicles strokes but not boxing them in and heavily outlining them.

How can one be able to do a pink or coral eyeshadow look without seeming as if they haven’t slept or their eyes look sore?
It’s about keeping [your choices] within the taupe and peaches. If the coral shade registers too orange on your skin rather than peach, that’s when it’s going to look like you have a sore eye. Keeping it on a more muted version rather than a vivid one will make those eyeshadows wearable.

You should also prep the eyes properly. If you don’t, any kind of shadow is going to oxidize so any shadow is going to look darker and more intense.

Strobing and highlighting using a powder can make pores larger. What can you advise to those women who want to get that highlighted look without using a cream?
If you can’t avoid using a powder, I would suggest just combining it first with a setting spray or solution. Adding that liquid would make it of a better consistency for dry skin and give you a naturally dewy look.

How can girls with oily skin use strobing to their advantage?
I would suggest using the strobe cream or highlighter underneath their foundation. A mattifying foundation would make it look like the glow is from within rather than an oily sheen or sweat over your face.

What are the five essential products needed to achieve this season’s looks?
A good red lipstick, a tube of waterproof mascara, a blue eyeliner, green eyeshadow, and satin-finish powders or products to help achieve strobing.
