The Mountain Lion has been unleashed.
Apple Inc. on Wednesday released the latest version of its Mac OS X operating system (10.8) by making it available on the Mac App Store.
Mountain Lion, which promises to port many features from iOS - Apple's platform for mobile devices - is available as a $19.99, 4.05-GB download.
"OS X Mountain Lion is the latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. Mountain Lion includes over 200 new features to update your Mac into the best computing experience yet," read a description on the App Store page for Mountain Lion.
Among its highly touted features are:
- iMessages, to send text, photos, videos, contacts, web links and documents to another Apple device like an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac
- Share button, which makes it easier to share files
- Reminders app
- built-in iCloud to keep data across all devices
Yet another new feature is Dictation, which "lets you talk anywhere you can type."
AirPlay Mirroring shows one's Mac screen on an HDTV with Apple TV, while Power Nap keeps the Mac up to date while it sleeps.
On the other hand, a new security feature - Gatekeeper - makes it safer to download apps from the Internet.
Chinese users will also get improved text input, and Chinese search engine Baidu as an option in the Safari browser.
However, users will have to have at least OS X 10.6.8 or later before they can download and install Mountain Lion. — TJD, GMA News
