Solar plane to set out to cross U.S. in early May
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California - The first crossing of the United States by a solar-powered plane is expected to start in just over a month, its creators said as they make final preparations for an attempt two years from now at the first round-the-world flight without any fuel.
Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard and project co-founder and pilot Andre Borschberg, whose Solar Impulse made its first intercontinental flight from Spain to Morocco last June, aim for their plane to take off from near San Francisco in early May and land at New York's John F. Kennedy airport about two months later.
With the wingspan of a jumbo jet and weighing the same as a small car, the Solar Impulse is just a test model for the team as they build a new aircraft they hope will circumnavigate the globe in 2015.
The project began in 2003 with a 10-year budget of 90 million euros ($112 million) and has involved engineers from Swiss lift maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay -- backers who want to test new materials and technologies while also gaining brand recognition.
Unveiling the current plane at a news conference at Moffett Field on San Francisco Bay, Borschberg highlighted the cramped conditions of the cockpit in the Solar Impulse.
"That's a bad economy seat - you would not fly on this airline," he joked. "The next one should be good business class."
While the current plane was set up for 24-hour flights, the next one would have to allow for up to five days and five nights of flying by one pilot - a feat never yet accomplished.
Meditation and hypnosis were part of the training for the pilots as they prepare to fly on very little sleep, Borschberg said, adding that some sort of autopilot system would have to be built on the next plane to allow for some rest.
The plane runs on about the same power as a motor scooter, he explained, powered by 12,000 solar cells built into the wing that simultaneously recharge the batteries - with storage equivalent to that of a Tesla electric car.
The plane has already flown a 26-hour flight, back in 2010, to prove continuous flight was possible with charging taking place in the day and battery power working at night.
Piccard, asked about the downside of solar-powered flight, agreed that there is a price paid for the small carrying capacity and massive wings.
"In that sense, it is not the easiest way to fly," he said. "But it is the most fabulous way to fly, because the more you fly, the more energy you have on board."
The first stop for the Solar Impulse as it crosses the United States will be Phoenix, followed by Dallas and then one of three cities: Atlanta, Nashville or St. Louis. It will then stop outside Washington D.C. before heading on to New York.
"It carries one pilot and zero passengers, but it carries a lot of messages," Piccard said. "We want to inspire as many people as possible to have that same spirit: to dare, to innovate, to invent."
Piccard has a pioneering legacy to maintain. His grandfather helped his father, Jacques, build a revolutionary submarine that Jacques co-piloted on the deepest-ever dive. Bertrand said he believes the basic idea behind this spirit is to find out what you deeply believe, and then try the opposite.
"Innovation is not about new ideas, it's about getting rid of old ideas." — Reuters

Actress Ashley Judd opts not to enter Kentucky Senate race
WASHINGTON - Actress Ashley Judd's next role will not be as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky.
Judd said on Wednesday she has decided not to run in 2014 to try to unseat Republican Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, after considering such a candidacy for months.
"After serious and thorough contemplation, I realize that my responsibilities & energy at this time need to be focused on my family," she wrote on Twitter.
Judd and her husband, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, announced in January that they had decided to end their 11-year marriage.
Judd, 44, considers Kentucky her home state but actually lives in neighboring Tennessee. She would have had to move to Kentucky in order to qualify as a candidate.
McConnell's re-election team in Kentucky already produced a campaign video criticizing Judd that made light of the fact that she did not live in Kentucky.
"And it just clicked, Tennessee is home," Judd is quoted as saying in a speech in the video.
Judd has starred in a number of movies including "Double Jeopardy" and "Kiss the Girls." Her mother, Naomi Judd, and sister, Wynonna, made up the country singing duo, The Judds.
Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen told CNN that her political consulting firm had represented Judd in her deliberations and that it had became clear over the past 10 days that she would not run.
"The timing just wasn't right," Rosen said. "She has a lot of other things going on."
Nashville television station WSMV said Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has expressed interest in running for the Democratic nomination to challenge McConnell, 71. - Reuters

Lovi Poe reveals why she doesn’t want to fall for her leading man
“I just want to work and work lang ngayon.”
Nakausap ng PEP si Lovi sa set ng The Bride and The Lover sa Fernwood Garden sa Project 6, Quezon City.
FOCUS ON WORK.
Dagdag pa ng aktres tungkol sa pag-ibig, “Siguro it will come naman, e, you’ll know it when that moment comes.
“I never planned it, but then siguro I’m happy like this. So hindi ko masyadong napapansin.”
IDEAL GUY. Kalaunan sa panayam ay inamin din ni Lovi na maaari ngang nag-iingat na rin siya ngayon sa relasyong kanyang papasukin.
Pero ano na ba ang hinahanap niya ngayon sa isang lalaki?
“Uhm, siguro someone funny and smart, someone who can keep the conversation going.
“Masarap kasi ‘yong nakakausap mo about many things.”
-- Joyce Jimenez, PEP.Ph

Pope urges Catholic priests to help poor, shun careerism
VATICAN CITY - Beginning a busy programme of Easter events, Pope Francis on Thursday urged Catholic priests to devote themselves to helping the poor and suffering instead of worrying about careers as Church "managers".
Francis' homily at his first Holy Thursday service as Roman Catholic leader was the latest sign since his surprise election two weeks ago of his determination that the 1.2 billion-member Church should be closer to the poor.
"We need to go out, then, in order to experience our own anointing (as priests) ... to the outskirts where there is suffering, bloodshed, blindness that longs for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters," he said during a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.
The 76-year-old former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has inherited a Vatican rocked by a scandal in which documents leaked to the media spoke of alleged corruption in its administration and depicted prelates as fighting among themselves to advance their careers.
At the Mass, the start of four days of hectic activities leading up to Easter this Sunday, Francis said priests should not get bogged down in "introspection" but step outside of themselves and concentrate on those who need their help.
"Those who do not go out of themselves, instead of being mediators, gradually become intermediaries, managers. We know the difference: the intermediary, the manager ... doesn't put his own skin and his own heart on the line, he never hears a warm, heartfelt word of thanks," he said.
In the next few weeks, Francis is expected to start making changes in the Curia, the central bureaucracy that was at the heart of the so-called "Vatileaks" scandal.
The new pope delivered his appeal for priests to live simply and closest to the needy on the day when the Catholic Church commemorates when Jesus founded the priesthood at the Last Supper on the night before he died.
Speaking to about 1,600 priests from Rome who attended the Mass, he said those who did not live in humility close to the people risked becoming "collectors of antiques or novelties - instead of being shepherds living with 'the smell of the sheep'"
The pope took the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, who is associated with austerity and helping the poor. The new pontiff has already set a clear tone for a humbler papacy and Church.
Later on Thursday, he will wash and kiss the feet of 12 young inmates at a youth prison on the outskirts of Rome, at a Holy Thursday ceremony commemorating Jesus's gesture of humility towards his apostles on the night before he died.
All popes in living memory have held the service either in St. Peter's or the Basilica of St. John in Lateran, which is the pope's cathedral church in his capacity as bishop of Rome.
The four days leading up to Easter are the most hectic in the Church's liturgical calendar.
On Friday Francis will preside at two Good Friday services including the traditional "Via Crucis" (Way of the Cross) procession around the ancient Colosseum in Rome.
He celebrates an Easter eve service on Saturday night and on Easter Sunday, the most important day in the Church's liturgical calendar, he will deliver his first "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message to a large crowd in St. Peter's Square. — Reuters

Good Customer Service Makes Banking Consumers Feel Financially Confident
According to a survey by TD Bank,
60% of consumers who are happy with their bank say they they have low-
or no financial stress, and more than half are optimistic about their
financial future. Moreover, consumers who define themselves as happy
with their bank spend 72 minutes less (7.3 hours vs. 8.5 hours) each
week worrying about their financial situation compared to those who say
they are not happy with their bank.
“All banks are not the same when it comes to the service they provide. Research shows those who feel valued by their bank are more likely to be happy with their financial state,” said Ryan Bailey, EVP/Head of Deposit Products at TD Bank.
TD Bank surveyed more than 1,500 consumers all along the east coast — from Maine to Florida — to better understand consumers’ banking experiences, their financial stress, as well as their financial outlook.
Other key findings from the survey include:
Based on the survey, Bailey concluded that “fast and simple” customer service is the key to influencing customer feelings of satisfaction. For customers to feel valued by their financial institution, the most critical components most often cited include friendly service (82%), knowledgeable advice (62%) and being a reliable financial resource (60%).
Bailey says banks have an opportunity to improve customers’ financial lives beyond the functional aspects of transactions. He says consumers will have positive brand associations with their primary financial provider if banks and credit unions would help them make banking easier.
Financial marketers should seek to establish a positive connection with consumers and foster trust, because people’s feelings of satisfaction towards their bank can give them a solid foundation to build a more confident and secure financial future, Baily explains.
The study was conducted from January 23-28, 2013. The sample size of 1,520 has a margin of error of +/- 2.5%. The survey was hosted by global research company Angus Reid Public Opinion.

- Three-out-of-four respondents aged 18-34 noted friendly service as a key characteristic to an ideal banking relationship compared to 82% of ages 35-54 and 89% of those 55+.
- When examining the nature of banking interactions, the majority of consumers are using bank branches (73%) followed by phone (30%) and online (13%)
- Not surprisingly, those 18-34 are most likely to go online, however 65% still use bank branches.
- Top financial goals among those polled included saving (56%) followed by paying off debt (38%) and planning for retirement (36%).
- Among those aged 35-54, saving and investing more (63%) and planning for retirement (49%) were top priorities.

8 Mistakes that Will Prevent Your Home from Selling
It’s a challenging market for home sellers right now. Buyers have a lot of options—and they don’t have to buy what you’re selling. Your house is likely just one located in a sea of for-sale signs, so you can’t be sloppy about putting it on the market.
Luckily, we’ve rounded up the dos and don’ts that will help you collect thousands (if not hundreds of thousands!) for your place.
1. Don’t … ask for too much money.
Yes, you know what you paid for the house. But that doesn’t mean that it’s still worth that amount—or that it’s appreciated in value since you bought it. “Your house is only worth what the market is willing to pay you,” says certified financial planner Ellen Derrick of LearnVest Planning Services, who has bought and sold at least eight homes, including investment properties. “It doesn’t matter what’s in it. And it doesn’t matter what your mortgage is.” Your realtor has an eye on the market and knows what kind of prices homes—just like yours—are garnering now. Pricing your home too high will discourage interested parties from making an offer, and your property could sit for months, which isn’t your goal.
What to do: Have a few realtors give you a price on the home (or get a comparative market analysis), and—this is key—don’t ignore them. Keep in mind that even if you’ve made pricey improvements to the home (granite countertops, stainless steel appliances), you may not get your money back if you’re the only home on the block with such upgrades. If comparable kitchens in the neighborhood don’t have similar upgrades, buyers aren’t expecting fancy perks in yours, and may not be willing to pony up for the difference.
2. Don’t … skip the marketing.
You may think that all you have to do is take one photo of the house, stick a “For Sale” sign in your yard and buyers will come pouring in the door. Au contraire. “The only way to guarantee that you’re going to get the highest price for the house is to use all of the marketing options available to you,” says Holly Mellstrom, a realtor in Pelham, NY. “This means Internet advertising, 30 pictures of your house, public open houses and even postcards.” The more people who see your house, the better your chances are of selling it. In an age when buyers start their searches online, counting on drive-bys and word of mouth isn’t enough anymore.
What to do: Don’t wait until the last minute to notify a realtor that your house is for sale. If you can, give her at least a month of lead time, so she can research comparable homes and set a good price. “Give them time to book their favorite professional photographer,” Mellstrom says. “And give them time to photograph your house on a day the sun is out.” In fact, if you live in a seasonal area, and you know that you’re going to put the house on the market in February, have photos taken in September, when the grass is still green and the trees have leaves.
3. Don’t … go it alone, unless you know what you’re doing.
If you’ve bought and sold half a dozen homes of your own or you live in a sought-after neighborhood where they sell in two days, you might be able to pull off a For Sale By Owner. If you aren’t a seasoned pro, however, let a professional take the reins. “Some people don’t buy and sell houses more than once or twice in a lifetime, and there’s a lot of money at stake,” Mellstrom says. “And there are so many disclosure laws now. Depending on the laws in your state, you’re really accepting some liability by trying to sell it yourself, unless you have a friend or an attorney who can guide you through the process.” A realtor also knows what’s selling around you, and for what price. She can tell you whether an offer is reasonable, and help you negotiate smartly. Plus, you may not save as much as you think in the end. “People who buy For Sale By Owner houses automatically discount the price they’re willing to offer because there is no realtor involved,” Mellstrom says.
What to do: If you can, get a realtor recommendation from a friend or colleague. Check references, conduct interviews and go with someone with a proven track record.
4. Don’t … neglect to fix things that are broken.
If sellers walk through your house and spot a handful of items that need immediate repair, they’re going to wonder how well you’ve maintained the things they can’t see. The entry way is a big tip-off. Got a loose hand rail on the steps, sagging screen door or jiggly door knob? Fix them. Clear your gutters, patch holes in your walls and address dripping faucets.
What to do: Do a walk-through of your own home, pretending that you’re seeing it for the first time. What things have you always meant to fix? Now is the time. Spend a few weekends dealing with all of those niggling projects to get your home in show-worthy shape.
5. Don’t … get emotionally involved.
Yes, it’s your house. Yes, you sweated blood and tears to get it just the way you wanted it. But, no, that does not make it someone else’s “perfect,” particularly when you’ve made some unique decorating decisions. You want the space to look as neutral as possible, so buyers can envision themselves in the space. So even if those teal walls in the bedroom look knock-out great with your duvet, they probably won’t match anyone else’s things. Let go of the features you love, and make it a house most people could love—and that might mean painting all of the walls a soft, neutral color. “My office at home is a robin’s egg blue,” Derrick says. “But if we get ready to sell that house, you can bet I’m repainting it.”
What to do: Have a realtor walk through your home, and when she tells you what you’ll need to change to make it marketable, listen to her. Start thinking about your house as a commodity, not an extension of your identity. If buyers don’t love it, it’s not a personal insult. It’s simply a deal that didn’t work out.
6. Don’t … leave your stuff everywhere.
You want buyers to feel like they could move into your house tomorrow—with their things. And your collectible tchotchkes, photos and utility bills make the space feel a little too personal. “That first impression is really important, and if they’re greeted with a huge photograph of you on your wedding day 25 years ago over the fireplace, that’s really distracting,” Mellstrom says. “It sends the message to the buyer that ‘This is my house, not your house.’”
What to do: Before you put the home on the market, get a few boxes and grab every extraneous thing you see: photos, knick-knacks, books. If it helps, take a few pictures of each room, and try to view them through a buyer’s eyes. What could you remove from each room to make the space feel bigger? “You want it to look like a hotel room,” Derrick says. “Hotel rooms look comfortable, but they don’t look like they’re somebody else’s comfortable.” Also? Don’t hang out at showings. While you may want to tell prospective buyers about all of the things you’ve done to the house, it’s best to leave them be. If there’s some information you think is important for them to know, leave a flyer on the kitchen counter.
7. Don’t … get offended by a lowball offer.
Just because someone came in with a really low bid is no reason to walk off in a huff. Now’s your chance to negotiate. “Buyers are trying to buy your house for the lowest price possible,” Mellstrom says. “Don’t blow them off. They might love your house. You can’t blame them for trying.” In other words, it’s not personal, and it’s not a slam on your housekeeping. It’s a business transaction.
What to do: Come back with a counteroffer. Typically, most buyers will come back with a second offer, which is a better indication of what they’re really willing to pay.
8. Don’t … lose a sale over something stupid.
It’s possible to get 99% of the way through a home sale, only to stall out at the end over a minor detail. Don’t be that seller. “I’ve seen people throw away getting a $450,000 house sold over somebody wanting to take the mantle instead of leaving the mantle over the fireplace,” Derrick says.
What to do: Unless it’s an heirloom that’s been in your family for generations, remember that you can probably find another one—but you may not find another buyer at that price. To be safe, if there are things you’re feeling like you can’t live without, such as the curtains you found at a crazy flea market or the light fixture you discovered at an antiques store, replace them with something else before you show the house.

Holy Week exodus starts peaking, cops brace for more passengers Monday
The exodus to the provinces for Holy Week began to peak this weekend, even as police brace for even more passengers heading for bus terminals, airports and seaports starting Monday.
Bus terminal managers expect many passengers who had booked provincial trips to show up beginning Holy Monday, radio dzBB reported early Sunday.
On Saturday, the dzBB report said police estimated some 7,000 passengers went to the Araneta bus terminal in Quezon City to get trips to the provinces.
Many passengers waited for as long as four to five hours before getting a bus ride.
Security has been doubled at the bus terminal with personnel checking not only passengers but also their luggage.
The report said the Land Transportation Office conducted a surprise inspection on the bus terminal and was satisfied with its security arrangements.

Microsoft releases data on government requests
WASHINGTON - Microsoft said Thursday it received 75,378 law enforcement requests for data in 2012 in the tech giant's first report on the sensitive subject.
The requests, which included those for the Skype messaging and voice service, potentially impacted 137,424 accounts, Microsoft said on its corporate citizenship Web page.
The disclosure is similar to a "transparency report" which Google started in 2010.
Microsoft said that "customer content" was released in just 2.1 percent of cases, representing 1,558 requests.
But "non content" information, which can include subscriber information such as the e-mail address, name, location and IP address was released in 79.8 percent of requests to the company, excluding Skype.
The company said Skype, which Microsoft acquired in 2011, did not provide any "content" in response to the 4,713 requests but did provide a Skype ID and other identifiers in more than 500 cases.
"In recent months, there has been broadening public interest in how often law enforcement agencies request customer data from technology companies and how our industry responds to these requests," Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said.
"Google, Twitter and others have made important and helpful contributions to this discussion by publishing some of their data. We've benefited from the opportunity to learn from them and their experience, and we seek to build further on the industry's commitment to transparency by releasing our own data today."
Smith said the data suggests "that less than 0.02 percent of active users were affected" by data requests.
"Microsoft is committed to respecting human rights, free expression, and individual privacy," he said, but added that "like every company, we are obligated to comply with legally binding requests from law enforcement."
Smith said two-thirds of the requests to Microsoft excluding Skype which resulted in any disclosure came from five countries -- the United States, Britain, Turkey, Germany and France.
For Skype, the top five countries accounted for 81 percent of all requests -- The US, Britain, Germany, France and Taiwan. — Agence France Presse

11 Common Investment Mistakes To Avoid While Investing In Stocks
There is only one rule to be successful while investing in stocks and that is “to not lose money!” Despite the information overload these days, people still make mistakes investing in stocks and lose money. I am not an exception in this case as I too made all of the mistakes that I have listed below, at one time or another, while investing in stocks earlier in my investment life. I am sharing here those experiences so that somebody else could learn from my mistakes. So here are those 11 common investment mistakes to avoid while investing in stocks.
Borrowing to Invest in Stock Markets
We hear success stories about making easy money in the stock markets from our relatives, friends, stock broker etc. Often we fail to know that only success stories are propagandized and failure stories deliberately have been hidden from us! By the time we hear those success stories, we might have already invested our spare cash in some other assets like real estate, gold etc. Greed spares none! We become enthused. To get the seed money, we would either pledge those assets or would borrow new unsecured debt. To be successful in the stock market, we need to have a long-term view and some cash that doesn’t need to service debt, money that we do not need for at least the next five or ten years. If we borrow to invest, interest adds up monthly to our investment costs. So we will be investing under a compulsion to find more returns than what we pay out as interest. That drags down our chances of success. Ultimately we would end up making only our lender rich!
Investing in Startups and IPOs
In order to ascertain the investment worthiness and to arrive at a rational investment decision based on some conclusions, we should look for a business or a company that has at least withstood one economic cycle (business cycle). An economic cycle is usually 8 to 11 years long. Based on how the company or the business withstood tough times of an economic cycle, we make an assumption that it will withstand in the same manner at tough times down the lane in the next 5 or 10 years. Fragile companies and business ideas hardly survive an economic cycle and wither away in a matter of years. Eg., the Internet companies of the 1990s that went bust along with the dot com bubble. So any company without a history or track record is undoubtedly not investment worthy howsoever brilliant the business idea or marvelous the company is. To preserve our capital, it is better to go for OPOs (old public offering) at a discounted price than going for IPOs (initial public offering) or startups.
Heeding to Advices, Tips, and Stock Market Predictions
Investing heeding to the stock tips, advices, and stock market predictions is the next big mistake that most of us make. You get a ton of them; from your stock broker, on the Internet, in the dailies, magazines, TVs etc. Never rely on such stock market predictions to invest your money. Heeding to those stock tips outright, even if the information is from paid sources, will rip you off your money because those who make those predictions, those who propagate those tips and advices have their own underlying vested interests in making you buy or sell. You should be able to substantiate yourself the reasons why you invest in a stock or why you sell a stock. Else, you would end up making only your stock broker rich.
Investing in Actively Managed Funds and Through Money Managers
Most people spend maximum time and effort earning money but hardly any time managing and growing it. If you want to become rich, you should be able to manage your money on your own. You should learn how to invest rather than depending on an investment manager (portfolio manager). It is not rocket science. All of us are not born intelligent, we learn by reading and listening. Why not apply that here too? If you still cannot find time to research about individual companies, investing in an index fund regularly over time should fetch you average market performance. The results still should be far better than an actively managed fund run by the so called pundits who eat 2% a year of your funds as fees. If the fund managers have that secrets of making you rich, why not they themselves become rich using those secrets rather selling you the investment products? So have in mind that no one else could be a better money manager for your money rather than yourself. Find time and will to make it on your own. Do investments in the stock market on your own or you would end up making only your money manager rich.
Looking to Time the Market
Another mistake that investors often make is trying to time the market. You either sit sucking the thumb expecting the market to fall more for you to start buying where as Mr. Market does the opposite or you end up selling too soon expecting the price to fall thereafter. Sometimes, people don’t sell at all even after the P/E having run into exorbitant numbers! I would sell my business if some potential buyer or if Mr. Market expresses interest to buy my business for an upfront payment of 40 or 50 years of profit. I buy and sell stocks as if I would buy or sell a business. Anytime is a good time to invest, as long as you are able to find a stock (business) that you believe is undervalued and you have the patience to sit tight. If the price falls below your purchase price, be greedy, try to buy more diverting all your cash flows! Time and markets wait for none. In the short term, the stock markets act like a voting machine where as in the long term, they act like a weighing machine. Only you need to identify when it is a voting machine and when it is a weighing machine.
Investing in a Company with Questionable Management Integrity
Investing in a company that has questionable management integrity is like giving your money to a thief for safekeeping. So the companies that care a damn about shareholder wealth maximization, minority shareholder interests, and labor interests are needed to be avoided to preserve your capital while investing in stocks. We have seen a lot of companies vanishing into air along with shareholder money. Honesty is a very expensive gift; don’t expect it from cheap people. If you are still compelled to invest in such companies, donate the money to charity rather than betting on thieves!
Buying into Turnaround Stories
Often you hear turnaround stories in the market but they may be the propaganda by those who are already trapped in the shares of those companies. These companies may end up without turning around at all. Transforming a multi-million or a multi-billion company is terribly difficult. Only exceptional people do it and failures are more common than success stories. So unless you have thorough evidence that the information is true to your satisfaction, investing in such turnaround stories will prove to be a blunder. Buy turnaround stories on proven results, not faith.
Investing in a Company That has no Competitive Advantage
Inflation adversely affects the purchasing power of consumers. If a company is finding it tough to pass on the rising costs to the consumers due to reasons like stiff competition, it is ought to wither away in due course. It is here where the competitive advantage of a company over the other companies in the same industry, a widening economic moat which the competitors are unable to break, comes to the advantage. Buying a company that has got no competitive advantage puts your capital at risk.
Investing in a Changing Technology Company
Technology is changing at a fast pace in today’s world. We are seeing personal computers and laptops giving way to tablets and smart phones. We saw phonograph records giving way to magnetic tape cassettes which in turn gave way to CDs and DVDs and now to pen drives. Same is with fat TVs to flat TVs, film photography to film-less photography. All these made a lot of companies go bust, belly up. Eg. The Gramophone Company, Kodak etc. Who knows what is in store for tomorrow? So why should we risk our money investing in an industry where the technology is constantly changing?
Investing in a Business Outside Your Circle of Competence
People get attracted to investing in glittery businesses that seem attractive from outside but fail to create wealth. For e.g., airline business. If you look at the airline stocks globally, they have little history of creating wealth for the shareholders. The net wealth creation in airline business since Orville Wright flew his first flight at Kittyhawk in 1903 has been next to zero. However, as I said earlier the glamour of the business keeps attracting new investors to set up airlines or to invest in existing airlines. It has evaporated capital over the past century like no other business but people still keep coming back to it and put fresh money in. So study the business model before investing in a company. Invest in a company that is within your circle of competence, invest in a simple business that you know the best rather than succumbing to the glitter and glamour surrounding a business.
Investing in a Debt Laden Company
Debt, especially huge, is a major concern both at an individual level as well as at a company level. It is like trying to run with your legs tied. If a company becomes solvent, creditors have utmost rights on the cash and assets of a company than the shareholders, though the money has the same value irrespective of whether it is brought in by the creditors or the shareholders! So investing in a heavily debt laden company is nothing but suicidal! Why should we want to risk our capital, hard saved money, investing in such a company?
Investment mistakes are abound and aplenty. Should you screen your stock pick for these common investing mistakes before you make an investment and buy it at half the price below its intrinsic value, undoubtedly you should be successful with your strategy investing in the stock markets. All these investment mistakes have made me prudent but with a cost. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you too should lose money to learn these lessons. Learn from the mistakes of others because you can’t live long enough to make them all yourselves!

Samsung Game Pad hints at even bigger phablets in the works
A game controller that docks with some Samsung Galaxy devices hints at the possibility of even bigger phone-tablet ("phablet") hybrids from the Korean electronics giant, a tech site reported Monday (Manila time).
CNET quoted Samsung as saying the controller, dubbed the "Game Pad," has a one-touch Bluetooth pairing function via Samsung's NFC Tectile system.
"What's perhaps most interesting about this fairly standard little controller, however, is one little note that's currently on the Game Pad page on Samsung's Galaxy S4 microsite. It notes '4- to 6.3-inch screen size available,' which is curious because Samsung's biggest phone at the moment is the Note 2 with a screen size of 5.5 inches," it said.
The controller also works as a remote control for bigger screens at home, it added.
Such specs may hint at a larger phablet, with the Note 3 probably measuring up to 6.3 inches, CNET said.
"At that size it's really becoming more tablet than phone, right? Which means it's really more accurate to call it a 'tabone,'" it added.
"Let's just embrace it. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to be the first to declare that I believe Samsung's new Game Pad has just outed the world's first tabone," it added. — TJD, GMA News

British actor Frank Thornton of 'Are you Being Served?' dies, 92
LONDON - British actor Frank Thornton, who played the pompous Captain Peacock in the television department store sitcom "Are You Being Served?", has died aged 92, his agent said on Monday.
David Daly said Thornton died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Barnes, London, on Saturday.
Thornton, who mainly played comedy roles, was also known for his role as Truly in "Last of the Summer Wine" and starred in comedies such as "Hancock's Half Hour," "The Goodies" and "Steptoe and Son."
Thornton was best known for his role of Captain Stephen Peacock, an uptight store walker who bragged about his wartime exploits in "Are You Being Served?".
The sitcom, packed with double entendres and sexual innuendoes, ran for 13 years from 1972 and was based in the fictional London department store Grace Brothers.
The series became popular in the United States on PBS stations and on BBC America, as well as in many Commonwealth nations around the world.
Thornton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beryl, daughter Jane and three grandchildren.
"I have been Frank's agent since 1986 and he has been the most wonderful client as well as being a great friend. He will be sorely missed," Daly said in a statement. — Reuters

Alison Eastwood Marries Stacy Poitras
With proud dad Clint Eastwood looking on, Alison Eastwood tied the knot with sculptor Stacy Poitras of TV's Chainsaw Gang in an intimate ceremony in Calabasas, Calif.
The bride wore a 1930s-inspired beaded gown by Les Habitudes at the Friday night nuptials at the Saddlepeak Lodge before family and friends. The couple's rings were designed by Philip Press.
"We are thrilled to be surrounded by our family for this very special day and appreciate their love and support as we begin our married life together," the couple tell PEOPLE exclusively.
The guests also included Alison's mother Maggie; her jazz musician brother Kyle Eastwood; actor brother Scott Eastwood of Trouble with the Curve; sister Kathryn Eastwood; Clint's wife Dina Eastwood and Poitras's brothers Mark, Matt and Bobby.
Afterwards, the guests dined on a menu that included salmon and elk, with a vegetarian meal for the bride.
Poitras, who stars on the cult hit CMT show as the leader of a band of artists who make sculptures with chainsaws, met the actress five years ago when she rode her horse to his studio at the Rustic Canyon General Store and Grill in Agoura, Calif.
Two years later, he decided to propose – but not before asking her father for his blessing.
"He looked at me for four or five seconds, which felt like 15 minutes, and then he said, 'You're going to have to take that up with her,'" Poistras recalls in the March/April issue of Westlake Magazine. "I said, 'Is that a yes or a no?' And he said, 'That's a yes," and he shook my hand."
Alison then also promptly said yes. They announced their engagement in 2012.
"He's my best friend," she tells Westlake Magazine. "He's the first man who has been the closest person to me."
Eastwood, 40, who is also a producer and director, recently appeared in the documentary American Mustang and the National Geographic Wild's show Animal Intervention, which helps owners of exotic animals find appropriate homes for the animals.
She also launched the Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for animals in need.

"As in nonstop kahit hindi yong mga sweet messages, hindi lang yon, eh, more on tinutulungan namin yong isa't-isa to grow," dagdag ng aktres.
Nagsimula ang kanilang pagkakaibigan sa pamamagitan ng Twitter.
"Tapos parang naging Twitter friends kami tapos he asked my number. Nagstart na yong conversation namin through text, dumadalo sa taping tapos eventually nagkapalagayan ng loob, 'yon na nanligaw siya," wika nito.
Noong mga panahong iyon ay kasama si Louise sa teleseryeng Alakdana.
"Ako kasi, ako yong, minsan, ako yong mas mataas, I mean mas mataas yong emotion. Masyado akong emotional, siya naman yong subtle lang. Ano kami, nagmi-meet kami halfway palagi," saad nito.
Gayundin, hindi pagkakaintindihan bilang magkasintahan ang nasabing hiwalayan at iginiit din nito na walang third party na pumasok sa kanilang relasyon.
Dagdag pa ni Louise, "Hindi yong kapag nag-burst ako, magbu-burst din siya. So kapag ako yong nag-burst siya yong tahimik. Pag siya ang nagbu-burst ako yong tahimik."
Samantala, bagama't "mutual" ang pagtatapos ng kanilang relasyon, aminado ang aktres na hindi ito naging madali para sa kanya.
Aniya, "Siyempre dahil ito yong parang first serious [relationship ko], siyempre mahirap para sa'kin pero I have work. So, happy na rin ako na may trabaho ako, at least doon ko nafo-focus yong attention ko and I have my friends."
Matapos ang lahat nang ito, bukas pa rin ang pinto ni Louise sa ideyang maaayos pa nila ni Enzo ang kanilang nasirang relasyon.
Ayon pa kay Louise, "I'm not closing any doors. Open po ako sa idea na magkakaayos pa kami pero sa ngayon siguro po, mas okay nang ganito at least makakapag-focus kami sa mga bagay na sa tingin namin mas importante sa'min ngayon like our work."
"Pero yong katulad ng sinasabi nila na kailangan mo munang ibigay yong pagmamahal sa sarili mo para maibigay mo yong buong pagmamahal mo sa partner mo, sa boyfriend mo," pagtatapos nito. — BM, GMA News

China performed 330 million abortions since 1971
BEIJING - Nearly 330 million abortions have been performed in China in the 40 years since it first implemented measures to limit population growth in the world's most populous nation, official data showed.
China has announced structural changes to its family planning system which oversees the controversial one-child policy during the ongoing annual meeting of the national legislature in Beijing.
Data posted on the health ministry website earlier this year shows that from 1971 -- shortly before China started encouraging people to have fewer children -- through 2010 a total of 328.9 million abortions were carried out in the country, which has a population of 1.35 billion.
China says that its one-child policy introduced in the early 1980s has prevented overpopulation and boosted economic development. The policy exempts some rural families, ethnic minorities and couples who are both only children.
Calls have increased, however, for the restriction to be phased out as the country's labour pool shrinks and the ranks of the elderly swell. Human rights groups have criticised what they say are harsh enforcement methods.
Under the policy, urban families are generally allowed to have just one child, while rural families may have a second if the first is a girl. Those who contravene the rules must pay a fine.
Last Sunday, the government announced the merger of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, which oversees the policy, with the health ministry in a move state media said was meant to improve, not abandon the one-child policy.
"After the reform, China will adhere to and improve the family planning policy," Ma Kai, secretary general of the State Council, China's cabinet, said when the move was announced, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The move was included in a report on governmental restructuring submitted to the National People's Congress, the country's legislature, which ends its annual session on Sunday.
China's latest census in 2010 showed that the population could have been 400 million larger if the one-child policy had not been implemented, according to Xinhua. - Agence France-Presse

'Veronica Mars' film fundraiser swiftly reaches $2 million goal
LOS ANGELES - Fans of defunct TV show "Veronica Mars" turned out in droves to raise $2 million in record time on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) to fund a long- hoped-for movie version of the mystery series about a young, female private investigator.
More than 31,000 people pledged amounts ranging from $1 to $10,000 on crowdsourcing site Kickstarter.com, less than 24 hours after the campaign was launched.
The TV series' creator Rob Thomas said he had struck a deal with Hollywood studio Warner Bros. to make a movie based on the show if he was able to raise $2 million by April 12 through the campaign.
"Their reaction was, if you can show there's enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we're on board," Thomas wrote on the film's donation page, adding that, if successful, the film will be released in early 2014.
"Veronica Mars," starring Kristen Bell, ran from 2004-2007 on U.S. television networks UPN and CW and told the story of a high school student who moves on to college while moonlighting as a private investigator working on complex mysteries.
Thomas said he wrote a feature film script soon after the TV show was canceled in 2007. But he said Warner Bros. declined to fund it at that time, saying it wasn't convinced there was enough interest to warrant a major studio-sized movie about Veronica.
Bell, who has signed on for a film version, promised on the Kickstarter website that if the $2 million goal is reached "we will make the sleuthiest, snarkiest, it's-all-fun-and-games" movie possible.
The campaign hit the $1 million threshold in four hours and 24 minutes on Wednesday, setting a new record as the fastest Kickstarter fundraising pitch to $1 million, Kickstarter said.
Popular Kickstarter drives, known as crowd funding, allow people to raise money for projects within a certain time frame as long as they offer gifts in return for donations.
For the "Veronica Mars" movie project, a pledge of $10 or more got backers a copy of the film's shooting script while those pledging $25 or more will receive a custom T-shirt along with the script.
One donor pledged at least $10,000 and will receive a speaking role in the film.

Justin Bieber concert in Portugal canceled
LONDON - Canadian singer Justin Bieber has canceled one of two planned concerts in Portugal this week, the venue in Lisbon said on its website on Monday.
A source close to the singer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the cancellation was not linked to Bieber's collapse on-stage in London last week, which forced the teen sensation to take a 20-minute break for oxygen and later to visit a hospital.
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber was forced to cancel the second performance in Portugal, March 12," a statement said on the website of the Pavilhao Atlantico.
"The Canadian singer is eager to play for the Portuguese fans on March 11," it added. Ticket holders for the canceled gig were entitled to a refund if they claimed it within a month.
The Bieber source did not give a reason for the cancellation, but local media in Portugal reported that tickets sales for the March 12 gig, which was added to his itinerary in February, were lower than organizers had hoped.
Bieber described his visit to London as a "rough week."
As well as the collapse, the 19-year-old was caught on film in an expletive-filled altercation with a photographer, showed up nearly two hours late for a show leading to widespread anger and was labelled a "pop brat" by a leading tabloid.
Discovered on YouTube in 2008, Bieber has built an online following of tens of millions of fans and is one of the pop world's biggest stars. In February, he became the youngest artist to land five chart-topping albums in the key U.S. market. — Reuters

Taking Advantage of Miscellaneous Deductions
Every tax season, frantic filers search for ways to reduce the checks they must write to Uncle Sam. A proven tax strategy is deducting as much as possible.
But sometimes, technically deductible expenses are wasted because they don't meet other Internal Revenue Service rules. This is often the case for most of the miscellaneous deductions found on Schedule A.
The roadblock preventing the write-off of these assorted expenses is the requirement that they total more than 2% of the taxpayer's adjusted gross income, or AGI. That means a taxpayer with $50,000 in AGI must come up with more than $1,000 in miscellaneous deductions before they do him any tax good. Even then, just the amount over $1,000 is deductible. So the 50-grand filer with $1,750 in tax-allowable miscellaneous expenses can only deduct $750, not the full $1,750.
While the 2% limit is tough for many filers to reach, it's not impossible. You just need to know exactly what the IRS considers as allowable miscellaneous deductions. The expenses fall into three general categories: unreimbursed employee expenses, tax preparation fees and "other" expenses.
Unreimbursed Employee Expenses
Remember that copier toner you bought that Saturday you had to work and the office machine ran dry? What about that fee you paid to become a notary public, a designation requested by your boss to speed up the flow of official documents? If you never got reimbursed for these costs, they could help reduce your personal tax bill as a miscellaneous deduction. The IRS says you can deduct these expenses you paid out of your own pocket as long as they were required to do your job as an employee and were "ordinary and necessary" to your business or trade. An expense is ordinary if it is common and accepted in your type of business; it's necessary if it is appropriate and helpful to you in doing your job.
Because you have that percentage target to meet, be thorough here. Most taxpayers know to count the price of professional journal subscriptions and business-related meals and entertainment, but other items the IRS says you can deduct are the costs of work-related classes, legal fees and licenses. Don't overlook the price of job-required uniforms that you bought (and that aren't suitable as general attire), as well as amounts you paid for employer-required medical examinations. Even the fee to obtain the passport you needed for that overseas business trip is deductible here.
Certain home-office expenses also might count, as long as the residential workspace is for the convenience of your employer and not just to save you some commuting time. And don't forget about depreciation on personal computers and cell phones you use for work. These, too, must be for your boss's convenience and required as a condition of your employment.
What if you've had it with your job and all its ancillary costs? You can deduct as miscellaneous expenses the amounts you spent looking for other employment in the same field.
Some of these expenses require you to fill out an additional tax form, schedule or work sheet. But when you get the final amount that you can deduct, report it on line 21 of Schedule A.
Tax-Preparation Fees
If collecting all your potential work-related deductions prompted you to seek tax help, then the IRS has a tax break for you here. And you don't have to hire a CPA to get this deduction. You can deduct the cost of tax-preparation software, tax publications and even costs for associated tax-filing duties, such as copying your returns or paying for return-receipt postage or overnight delivery when you mail them.
If you choose electronic filing, any fee you paid for that service is deductible here. The IRS now even lets you deduct the convenience fee you were charged when you paid your e-filed taxes by credit card.
Just remember, you deduct your tax-preparation expenses for the tax year in which you paid them, not the tax year for which you are filing. So on your 2009 return, you count the tax-related costs you incurred last year to prepare your 2008 taxes. Any expenses you fork over now to complete your current return will count when you file your 2010 forms next year.
Once you've totaled your tax-prep costs, enter them on line 22 of Schedule A.
Other Miscellaneous Deductions
The final 2% deduction category is "other" expenses. For most taxpayers, these are costs to produce or collect income, such as investment-related fees, or to manage or maintain property that provides you some extra earnings. For the IRS to accept these deductions, the expenses must be "reasonably and closely related to" a taxpayer's income-producing efforts. Some common expenses that meet this requirement are clerical help in caring for investments, depreciation on home computers used to track and manage investments, and the fee for a safe-deposit box in which you keep investment data. If, however, your bank box holds only jewelry and other personal items, or even tax-exempt securities, the box rental fee is not deductible.
You also can write off several investment-related fees that, while small, could add up. They include service charges on dividend reinvestment plans and trustee's fees you paid for your IRA. Just make sure your retirement account fee is billed separately rather than included as part of your account's general management costs, and that you pay it separately.
Even costs associated with a recreational activity could come into play. Take, for example, an amateur photographer who snaps shots of graduations or weddings for the neighbors and gets a few bucks in return. The shutterbug can deduct camera-related expenses as a miscellaneous expense as long as the amount isn't more than the payments he got. The IRS frowns on using hobby expenses to reduce taxes.
All allowable "other" miscellaneous deductions are entered on Schedule A's line 23. Then all three category amounts (lines 21, 22 and 23) are totaled. Unfortunately, because of the AGI percentage limit, that's not what you can deduct.
Maximizing Miscellaneous Deductions
Now you must take your AGI (from line 38 of your Form 1040), multiply it by 2% and enter the amount on line 26 of your Schedule A.If that income percentage is more than your miscellaneous deductions total, you're out of tax-deduction luck. You can't claim any of the expenses. But if your fractional AGI amount is less, subtract it from your miscellaneous deductions total -- the remainder is what you can claim as an itemized deduction.
In addition to your Schedule A calculations, you might have to complete additional tax forms or work sheets to claim some of these miscellaneous expenses. You can find a complete list of the IRS-approved deductions (and those that aren't OK), as well as the other tax paperwork each might require in IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions. But if the extra paper gets you over the 2%-of-AGI hurdle, the time spent is probably worth it.
And what if your miscellaneous efforts fell a bit short this filing season? Then set up a deduction bunching strategy now to guarantee that future sundry expenses aren't wasted. This is simply bunching, or gathering your expenses into one tax year, rather than spreading the costs over several. By doing so, you often can accumulate enough expenses to exceed the deduction threshold.
For example, renew your business subscriptions in December instead of January or prepay your professional association dues early. This will help turn "nearly" deductible expenses one year into full-fledged tax breaks the next filing season.
The only downside of this plan is that it usually helps you out only every other year. When you push expenses into one year, you generally will find yourself short of the itemized deduction percentage requirement the next year. But getting the breaks on alternate tax filings is still better than missing out on them every year.
If you choose electronic filing, any fee you paid for that service is deductible here. The IRS now even lets you deduct the convenience fee you were charged when you paid your e-filed taxes by credit card.

BlackBerry Z10 to Go On Sale with AT&T March 22
AT&T Inc will start selling the highly anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone in the United States on March 22, the company said on Monday, sending BlackBerry shares more than 10% higher.
BlackBerry, formerly known as Research In Motion, is hoping the new devices, already on sale in Canada, Britain and more than 20 other countries, will help it win back market share in the United States, which was once a stronghold for the smartphone industry pioneer.
The U.S. launch of the new devices has been delayed due to a longer carrier-testing phase in the country. AT&T said pre-sales of the devices will begin on Tuesday, March 12.
BlackBerry says sales of its new smartphone have been outpacing its expectations so far, but investors are keen to see how it fares in the United States. The company has lost U.S. market share rapidly to Apple Inc's iPhone and a slew of devices powered by Google's Android operating system.
As expected, AT&T said it would sell the devices for $199.99 with a two-year contract. T-Mobile USA said on Friday it planned to start selling the BlackBerry Z10 to its business customers in the United States on Monday.
Verizon Inc , the biggest U.S. wireless carrier, has yet to say when it will start selling the Z10. The Z10 and the soon to be launched Q10, which will come with BlackBerry's traditional physical keyboard, are powered by the new BlackBerry 10, or BB10 operating system.
"We believe the Street is pricing in such a weak fiscal 2014 that BB10 does not need to be an outstanding success to surprise,'' Scotiabank analyst Gus Papageorgiou said in a note to clients on Monday.
Papageorgiou, who has a ``sector outperform'' rating on the stock, said he expects the company sold about 1 million BlackBerry 10 devices in the quarter ended March 2.
"Gross margins should begin to move higher as more Z10s enter the mix,'' he said. ``Next quarter will be the true test as BB10 launches in the U.S.''
BlackBerry shares were up more than 10 percent at $14.37 in mid-morning Nasdaq trading on Monday, while its Toronto-listed stock rose by a similar margin to C$14.78.

Russian scientists may have found new life under Antarctic ice
MOSCOW - Russian scientists believe they have discovered new life forms sealed off for millions of years in a subglacial lake deep under the Antarctic ice, the RIA news agency reported on Thursday.
After more than a decade of stop-and-go drilling, Russia pierced through Antarctica's frozen crust last year and took back samples of water from a vast lake that has lain untouched for at least 14 million year.
Scientists say the icy darkness of Lake Vostok, under some 3,700 metres of ice, may provide a glimpse of the planet before the Ice Age and clues to life on other planets.
"After excluding all known contaminants, bacterial DNA was found that does not match any known species in world databases," Sergei Bulat of the St Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute told RIA.
"If it (the bacteria) had been found on Mars, then without a doubt we would have said there is life on Mars - but this is DNA from Earth," he said. "We are calling this life form unidentified or unclassified."
Scientists from the United States and Britain are close on Moscow's heels to probe what life may exist in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
This year, a U.S. expedition said they had seen living cells under a microscope in field samples taken from the shallower subglacial Lake Whillans, but more study is needed to determine what kinds of bacteria they are and how they live.
A British effort to reach a third body, Lake Ellsworth, was called off in December because of problems drilling.
What life is found in the icy depths may provide the best answer yet to whether life can exist in the extreme conditions on Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa.
The Russian discovery came from analysing water that froze onto the end of the drill bit used to bore through to Vostok - the largest of a network of hundreds of lakes under the ice cap that acts like a blanket trapping the Earth's geothermal heat.
Bulat and other members of Russia's Antarctic mission could not be reached for comment to Reuters on Thursday.
But Bulat told RIA that scientists are waiting for more samples from the lake to confirm their discovery.
Because of the technology used to keep from polluting the pristine lake, Russia will only obtain clean water samples - uncontaminated by drilling fluid - for analysis later this year.
To answer concerns kerosene and anti-freeze from the borehole would seep into the lake, Russian engineers withdrew the drill to allow the water to percolate up into the borehole and freeze there, only returning this year to collect it.
But Bulat said the unknown microbes were found after separating out species of bacteria that are known to exist in the drilling fluid.
"When we tried to identify the DNA, it did not coincide with any of known species. It's degree of similarity was less than 86 percent," Bulat told RIA.
"That is practically zero when working with DNA. A level of 90 percent tells us the organism is unknown."
Frozen samples from deeper in the borehole collected during this year's Antarctic summer season in February are now being carried back by boat and are due in St Petersburg in May.
"If we again identify the same group of organism in that pure sample of water, then we can confidently say we have found new life on Earth," Bulat said. — Reuters

US childhood obesity fight sees some success – group
US companies and other groups that have made attempts to reverse the nation's rising childhood obesity rate are starting to see results as more American kids exercise and have better access to healthy foods, they said on Thursday.
More than 1,700 US cities have promoted exercise to get nearly 3 million more kids moving in the last year, according to a report by the Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit that works to get private companies and organizations to pledge specific action to fight the weight epidemic.
Still, if left unchecked, about half of all Americans will be obese by 2030, according to the group, whose partners range from Darden Restaurants Inc and Walmart Stores Inc to the YMCA and the US Olympic Committee.
Some health advocates welcomed the findings but said more effort was still needed, including government action.
Already, one in three US youth are obese and another third are overweight. Experts are worried because heavier children are more likely to remain overweight as adults, and suffer a higher incidence of diabetes, heart disease and other conditions.
"We're seeing pockets of progress toward reversing the childhood obesity epidemic," said Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "For progress to reach every corner of our country, we must redouble our efforts: parents, schools, nonprofit organizations, government at all levels, and the private sector."
Childhood obesity carries significant healthcare related costs and even poses national security risks, experts say, by reducing the pool of those fit for military service.
Some of the partner companies have pledged to change food offerings on restaurant menus or work to get more children into activities like soccer or tennis, according to the group, which released the report as part of its annual conference in Washington that also headlined First Lady Michelle Obama.
The group has said it wants to help 10 million Americans gain access to healthier foods, saying 23.5 million people in the United States – including 6.5 million children – have no nearby access to options like fresh produce or cannot afford to buy it.
Already, 141 grocery stores have been built or renovated in so-called "food deserts," often low-income urban neighborhoods without nearby grocery stores, helping more than a half-million people, it said.
"In places like Philadelphia, New York City and Mississippi - places where folks from every sector are working together - we've seen childhood obesity rates begin to come down," said Obama, who has made tackling obesity her signature issue while in the White House.
Fruits and vegetables, meat and other whole foods can often be more expensive than processed ones that contain subsidized ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup.
Some health experts have been critical of the food industry for offering unhealthy products. Manufacturers have long pointed to consumer choice, but many have begun to change their offerings in recent years as more US consumers become health conscious.
Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker, another honorary vice chairman and a Democrat, told MSNBC the annual progress report is important for holding companies accountable to their commitments to change.
On Thursday, several more companies joined the partnership, including GE Healthcare, part of General Electric Co, and Cerner Corp, among others. – Reuters

Microsoft fined €561M for breaking EU antitrust promise
BRUSSELS - EU antitrust regulators fined Microsoft 561 million euros ($731 million) on Wednesday for breaking a promise to offer European consumers a choice of web browser.
Microsoft had made the pledge in 2009 in settling an antitrust investigation in Europe, where the software group's regulatory troubles date from the last decade and have cost it a total of 2.16 billion euros, including the latest fine.
Microsoft promised to offer European consumers a choice of rival browsers in the previous version of its Windows operating system. But the European Commission, which acts as competition regulator across the 27-member European Union, said it found the company broke that undertaking between May 2011 and July 2012.
The Commission said it takes such settlement commitments very seriously.
"Legally binding commitments reached in antitrust decisions play a very important role in our enforcement policy because they allow for rapid solutions to competition problems," Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a statement.
"Of course, such decisions require strict compliance. A failure to comply is a very serious infringement that must be sanctioned accordingly," he said. — Reuters

Justin Bieber's untimely death in a car crash is just a Facebook hoax
Fans of singer Justin Bieber were warned this week against a new variant of an old scam circulating on social networking site Facebook.
Security vendor Sophos said the scam attracts attention by claiming Bieber died in a car crash, and offering "details" of the incident.
"Past bogus death reports have involved the likes of deaths of
Adam Ant, Jim Carrey, Christian Slater, Vanilla Ice, Tom Cruise amongst
many others," it said.
It also cited a similar scam earlier this year, where a "Global Associated" story that Pet Shop Boys star Neil Tennant also died in a car crash.
Sophos said some websites merely allow anyone to "automagically" generate a fake news story about a death in a car crash.
Simply changing the link changes the name of the victim, it said.
"Before you know it, Internet users are unwittingly forwarding the message without checking their facts, and the tasteless website is earning itself some cash from all of the new traffic seeing its adverts," it said.
Yet, it said careless Facebook users are re-sharing this bogus story of Bieber's death.
This not just keeps the hoax alive but also helps drive traffic "to a website that thinks it is clever to play such sick pranks," it added. — TJD, GMA News

GMA Network keeps lead in Urban Luzon, Mega Manila
Listed GMA Network Inc.'s television arm kept an over-all lead in viewer-rich Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in February, according to the recent Nielsen TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM).
Citing Nielsen's report, GMA said in a statement its main television arm scored an average total day audience share of 35.5 percent in Urban Luzon.
The score compares to ABS-CBN’s 29.8 points and TV5’s 14.1 percent.
In Mega Manila, GMA's total day audience share was at 36.6 percent, ahead by 8.9 points from ABS-CBN’s 27.7 percent and by 21.6 points TV5’s 15 percent.
Urban Luzon accounted for 76 percent of the total urban TV household population in the country, while its subset Mega Manila represented 59 percent of the nationwide total.
GMA, likewise, registered the most shows in NUTAM's 30 top-rated programs (excluding specials) for Urban Luzon and Mega Manila at 17 and 18 entries, respectively.
The long-running public affairs program “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” led all other GMA programs in the list for NUTAM in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.
Other top-performing Kapuso programs for February are “Magpakailanman,” “Temptation of Wife,” “Indio,” “Kapuso Movie Night,” “Pahiram ng Sandali,” “24 Oras,” “Bubble Gang,” “Pepito Manaloto,” “Eat Bulaga,” “Imbestigador,” “Sana ay Ikaw na Nga,” “Smile Dong Hae,” “Yesterday’s Bride,” “Kap’s Amazing Stories,” “The Princess’s Man,” “Watta Job,” and “The Greatest Love”.
GMA’s average total day audience share in NUTAM dipped by 1.4 points to 31.7 percent in February from 33.1 percent a month previous.
“The Network is confident, however, that it will regain its nationwide lead as it continuous to strengthen its programming line-up alongside its constant efforts to strengthen its reach across the country,” GMA Network said.
As the quarter draws to a close, GMA is set to launch additional programs, including the Saturday night sitcom “Vampire Ang Daddy Ko,” topbilled by ace comedian Vic Sotto; the upcoming GMA Telebabad program “Mundo Mo’y Akin” starring Alden Richards and Louise delos Reyes, and introducing Lauren Young; and the afternoon drama “Kambal ni Eliana” featuring Kim Rodriguez, Enzo Pineda, Kristoffer Martin and Lexi Fernandez.
GMA News TV remains the country’s number one news channel
Meanwhile, GMA News TV (News TV) continues to strengthen its position as the country’s leading news channel with its continued dominance over competition.
News TV garnered a 4.4-percent average total day audience share in NUTAM in February. It left leaving behind ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), which only managed to score 0.1 percent, and AKSYON TV with only 0.2 percent.
This year, News TV launches “game-changing, next level documentary series of a scale never before produced by GMA News and Public Affairs,” GMA Network said.
The ratings scored card, based on overnight data, were collated from February 24 to 28.
