US Embassy Manila closed on Thursday to mark US Independence Day
The United States Embassy in Manila will be closed on Thursday in observance of the Fourth of July, or Independence Day in the US.
In a post on its Google+ account, the US Embassy said it and its affiliated offices will resume normal operations on Friday, July 5.
"The Embassy of the United States in Manila and its affiliated offices will be closed to the public on Thursday, July 4, in observance of the 237th Anniversary of U.S. Independence... The Embassy and its affiliated offices will resume their services on Friday, July 5, 2013," it said.
On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress and set the US' 13 colonies on the "road to freedom as a sovereign nation," the US census website said.
While the US had an estimated population of 2.5 million in July 1776, the population has grown to 316.2 million today.
"As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country," it said. - VVP, GMA News
