32TB SSD from Samsung presented at Flash Memory Summit

Seagate’s 60TB 3.5-inch SSD may be out of everyone’s reach for an indefinite period but fear not, because Samsung may have a solution. Introducing the 2.5-inch form factor 32TB SSD.

PCWorld reports that this SSD, which was unveiled at the Flash Memory Summit currently being held in Santa Clara, California, USA, is the first of its kind to be based on 4th-generation V-NAND technology. This particular technology utilizes a three-dimensional architecture to greatly increase storage capacity without exponentially ramping up costs.

Apart from the extra-large capacity, 4th-gen SSDs will also have higher sequential read-and-write performance than its predecessor. For more information on 3D V-NAND technology, check out the video after this article.

Samsung plans to ship the 32TB SSDs next year and is targeting to have 100TB SSDs in the market by 2020. The 32TB drive will primarily be targeted for use in servers, flash arrays and external storage systems. However, the drive will not be compatible with NVMe slots.

Samsung also announced the new Z-SSD, a NAND flash for use as cache or temporary storage in data centers. It has faster sequential read speed and four times lower latency than the previous Samsung PM963 NVMe SSD.

Samsung also said it is working with other companies in creating a new form factor for servers that will provide more storage, power control circuits and accelerator chips. Alfred Bayle
