Raptors suspend Ibaka after incident with team staff member

The Toronto Raptors didn’t miss a beat without suspended Spanish power forward Serge Ibaka on Friday as 25 points from DeMar DeRozan powered them to a 111-98 NBA victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Raptors improved to 13-1 on their home court this season.

They took a 19-point lead into the fourth quarter but the Hawks narrowed the gap to 13 points on a three-pointer from Tyler Cavanaugh with 8:30 to play.

The Hawks twice trimmed the deficit to nine in the final minute and a half, but the Raptors held on.

Kyle Lowry scored 12 points and handed out five assists for Toronto. Jonas Valanciunas scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Raptors, who announced before the game that they had suspended Spanish power forward Serge Ibaka for the contest after he was involved in an altercation with a team staff member.

The Raptors said Ibaka violated team rules in the incident, which took place after the Raptors’ 124-107 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

“Both parties have apologized. We’ve discussed this internally as a team, and we won’t be discussing it any further,” Raptors president Masai Ujiri said.

“Now we’re focused on moving forward together, and we look forward to having Serge back in the lineup.”

Apple apologizes for slowing iPhones, offers discounted batteries

SAN FRANCISCO, United States — Apple on Thursday apologized to its customers for slowing down performance of older iPhone models and said it would discount replacement batteries for some of its handsets.“We’ve always wanted our customers to be able to use their iPhones as long as possible. We’re proud that Apple products are known for their durability, and for holding their value longer than our competitors’ devices.”

Apple said it was reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement from $79 to $29 for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January through December 2018.

The company said it also would issue a software update to make it easier for customers to see if an aging battery is affecting performance.

“As always, our team is working on ways to make the user experience even better, including improving how we manage performance and avoid unexpected shutdowns as batteries age,” the statement said.

The controversy erupted last week after Apple acknowledged a feature to “smooth out” spikes in demand for power to prevent iPhone 6 models from shutting down due to the cold or weak batteries.

Rumors had persisted for years at tech news websites devoted to Apple products and among fans of the company’s products that iPhone performance was being intentionally slowed, perhaps to push users to buy newer models.

Apple’s latest statement said that “we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades.”

But it noted that “batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age” and that factors such as heat can affect performance.

Apple said a software update last year “manages the maximum performance of some system components when needed to prevent a shutdown” and that “in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance.” /cbb

Fears over bitcoin use in terror financing

The global bitcoin craze has attracted almost everyone, from mom-and-pop traders to giant investment banks.

Promoters of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies tout them as being safe and secure, and without oversight from financial regulators.

But there is some concern that these very advantages could be exploited by terrorists to transfer funds from one place to another.

Financial intelligence experts from the region say this is already happening, with several suspicious financial transactions detected recently.

Some of these experts gathered in Malaysia last month for the Third Counter-Terrorism Financing Summit. The security experts from 35 countries unanimously agreed that the first step to disrupting militant operations is by cutting off their funds.

A new alliance between Australia and South-east Asia has also been formed to directly target and disrupt the funding lifeline of terrorist groups by denying them access to the international financial system and other sources of funds.Sources told The Straits Times that the high degree of anonymity offered by digital currencies makes them a possible preferred avenue for militants in South-east Asia.

“The number might not be big but we know it’s picking up. Their ultimate goal is to make sure that these funds get where they’re supposed to be,” said one source.

“Small or big, it can help move any terrorism planning to the next level – launching attacks.”

While the surge in the value of bitcoins and similar cryptocurrencies has garnered widespread media attention, security experts say the terrorists use digital currency not to make money, but for ease of moving funds between borders without the regular banking scrutiny.

For operational reasons, officials declined to reveal the locations and frequency of such transactions. But the identity of some of these financial movements on the Web has been determined, said a second source.

“Special equipment and database are already in place to help analyse these patterns. Identity is key to uncovering terrorism activities. We can monitor and trace the origin of the fund but to know who’s behind it is very tricky,” he said.

“We have all these equipment in place, but it’s still very hard to ‘crawl’ in the dark Web market,” the source added.

Malaysian criminologist P. Sundramoorthy said the consequences of militants or sympathisers switching to the use of cryptocurrency would be devastating as terror groups could be expected to execute attacks after receiving the funds.

“Given that cryptocurrency offers a high degree of anonymity and is popular and user-friendly, measures to control it must be put in place as soon as possible. They will always find a way to exploit such channels. We can’t eliminate the use but we need to limit it.”

Still, some experts say the issue might have been played up.

In a recent study by the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), the British intelligence think-tank suggested that there is little link between cryptocurrency and terrorism. It said the claims that bitcoin is funding terrorism are greatly exaggerated.

Mr David Carlisle, an independent consultant with Rusi, said in a March 2 commentary: “Treating cryptocurrencies as an exceptional threat creates the misleading impression that more conventional financial products are not already equally, or more, vulnerable to terrorist exploitation.”

A regional security source acknowledged that most militants are indeed still channelling funds via conventional banking and money remittance services.

Still, it has been noticed that digitial currency has also been used as a means of transfer.

“We still see most of them funding their operations by taking personal loans, selling their belongings and so on. But to say the possibility of these militants turning to the dark Web is little or unlikely, that’s dangerous as we’re already seeing suspicious movements which we believe are terrorism fundings,” he said. “They will always try to find new ways to exploit technology to materialise their sick agenda.”

The danger of terrorist financing can be gleaned by the capture of Marawi in the southern Philippines by militants that ended in October after a five-month siege.

The Associated Press reported last month that Philippine military chief Eduardo Ano said at least US$1.5 million (S$2 million) was sent by terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria to finance militants planning the Marawi attack.

As Malaysia begins to impose controls over the growing use of digital currencies, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), its central bank, has required that conversions of cryptocurrencies into cash must be reported under the strict transactions under anti-money laundering laws.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said: “BNM has announced measures that would regulate the use of cryptocurrencies in Malaysia, especially the conversion of cryptocurrencies into cash and other equivalents. This measure will help the police and other enforcement agencies to manage terrorism financing.”

3 Things To Know About Mortgages For Overseas Properties

There are many good reasons to invest in property overseas. You may want to use the property as a vacation rental or as a vacation home for yourself and your family. Your child may be going to university overseas, and you may be thinking about buying a property as an investment where they are studying. Getting a mortgage for an overseas property is different than getting a mortgage in your country of residence, however, and there are some things to consider.

1. Hire an Expert

Even if you are experienced in buying real estate, the rules are often quite different when it comes to buying overseas. The best thing to do would be to find a local real estate agent in the country where you want to buy, who is experienced when it comes to dealing with overseas buyers. By working with a local agent, you can better understand the local laws and regulations when it comes to home purchasing and financing.

2. Getting Financing is Challenging

Obtaining a mortgage for an overseas property can be challenging. If you have a credit score from a foreign country, it won’t be counted overseas. You will have to obtain a mortgage from a bank in the country you are purchasing in, and the application process will be similar to that in your home country. You will still have to prove income and provide all other supporting documents. As a foreign buyer, you will likely be unable to get low mortgage rates.

Experts recommend you buy your first couple properties overseas outright, as it is unlikely you’ll be able to get a loan. Once you have a bit of a portfolio overseas, it will be easier to get a loan for future purchases.

3. You Can Leverage Your Current Property

While it’s difficult to get a mortgage from a foreign bank, some homeowners use the equity on their current residence to finance a purchase overseas. Speak to a mortgage broker about obtaining a home equity loan or refinancing in order to finance an overseas’ property. Refinancing can be tricky, so it’s best to seek the advice of a professional.

Buying a home overseas can be very rewarding. If you choose to use it as a holiday rental, you can make a good income. If you are moving overseas yourself, it’s a great investment and a good way to diversify your portfolio. While it is more difficult to get a mortgage and to get low mortgage rates overseas, it isn’t impossible. Of course, your ability to find low mortgage rates will differ depending on where you are buying. If you are considering buying a property overseas, contact one of our mortgage experts today for more information and advice!

Christmas aid as UK homelessness becomes ‘national crisis’

Volunteers at a drop-in center in north London hand out food, healthcare and advice to homeless people as they do every Christmas – except that this year, the numbers needing help have reached crisis point.

At a school emptied of children for the holidays, visitors are offered a hot meal and a chat, dental and medical check-ups, and even a sewing repair service for damaged sleeping bags.

The pop-up center is among 13 set up across Britain by homelessness charity, Crisis, to provide some festive cheer to an estimated 4,500 people, who might otherwise be on the streets.

Among those stopping by for a cup of tea before Christmas was Paula, a 48-year-old former care worker who spent three months living in her car after being evicted following problems with her landlord.

“My car was my safest bet because I could lock the doors, but it wasn’t warm – luckily it was summer,” she told AFP.

It was also deeply uncomfortable and exacerbated an existing back problem, to the point that she collapsed and had to be taken to hospital.

She has since found a new place to live, but Crisis warned that cases like hers are increasingly common, estimating that thousands of people across Britain are forced to sleep in cars, trains, buses, and tents.

These “hidden” homeless are in addition to the more than 9,000 people living on the streets in England at any one time, up 134 percent since 2011, according to a scathing report by lawmakers published this week.

The MPs said the growth was “appalling”, adding: “The extent of homelessness across England is a national crisis.”

Housing shortages

Opposition Labor lawmaker Jeremy Corbyn highlighted the plight of rough sleepers in his Christmas message on Sunday, as well as that of an estimated 78,000 households who are living in temporary, often sub-standard accommodation.

He has previously described it as a “national disgrace”.

Crisis chief executive Jon Sparkes said there were numerous reasons why people lost their homes, including the breakdown of relationships, but the biggest recent factor has been the ending of a private sector tenancy.

“What’s becoming really clear to us is that the impact of not building social houses, the impact of spiraling cost of housing, the impact of welfare reform and cuts to benefits is creating and driving a really worrying growth in rough sleeping and broader homelessness,” he told AFP.

The MPs said the government’s attitude in the face of a growing problem had been “unacceptable complacent”.

They also warned about the impact of a lack of affordable, decent homes, calling for a “renewed focus” on housing policy.

Challenged on the subject earlier this month, Prime Minister Theresa May said the government was investing £500 million (563 million euros, $668 million) in tackling homelessness.

Speaking in the House of Commons, she also noted measures announced in November’s annual budget to increase the supply of affordable housing.

“We are going to be a government who put a clear focus on housing, on building the homes that people need, on ensuring that people are given help to get into those homes, and on acting to prevent homelessness before it happens,” she said.

At the drop-in center, volunteer Mhari Colvin, who has worked with Crisis for 13 years now, reflected on “just how easy it is for people to become homeless”.

“They are just you and me, they’re the same people, they’ve just had one or two runs of bad luck and it can be just one thing and their whole world falls apart,” she said. /kga

Westbrook’s 3-pointer lifts Thunder past Hawks

OKLAHOMA CITY — Russell Westbrook hit a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to cap a 30-point, 15-assist outing, and the Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Atlanta Hawks 120-117 on Friday (Saturday Manila time).

Carmelo Anthony added 24 points on 7-of-12 3-point shooting and Paul George scored 17 for the Thunder, who have won five of their last six after an 11-14 start.

Atlanta, in last place in the Southeast Division, made Oklahoma City work for this one, rallying after falling behind by 16 points in the first half.

The Hawks led 92-88 with 8:49 left after a basket by Kent Bazemore. Westbrook re-entered the game and led the Thunder on a 16-5 run. Anthony’s 3-pointer with 5:34 left gave Oklahoma City a 104-97 lead.

The Hawks came back again, eventually tying the game at 117 on two free throws by Ersan Ilyasova with 11.1 seconds left. After a timeout, George inbounded to Westbrook, who made the final shot over Atlanta’s Taurean Prince. Without a timeout, the Hawks could manage only a desperation heave at the buzzer.

Marco Belinelli scored 30 points to lead Atlanta, which is 2-7 against Western Conference teams this season. Ilyasova added 22 points for the Hawks, who went 15 of 32 from 3-point range.

The Thunder dominated the second quarter. They broke a 28-28 tie with a 14-2 run to start the quarter, with Raymond Felton and George each hitting two 3-pointers. After the Hawks pulled within 51-43, Oklahoma City went on a 13-5 run and led 64-50 at halftime.

Atlanta scored 11 straight points to cut the Thunder lead to 74-70 midway through the third quarter.

Oklahoma City made only 19 of 31 free throws.

Durant leads Warriors past Lakers for 11th straight win

OAKLAND, California — Kevin Durant had 33 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four blocks, and the Golden State Warriors held off the Los Angeles Lakers 113-106 on Friday (Saturday Manila time) for their 11th straight victory.

Rookie Jordan Bell recorded his first career double-double with season bests of 20 points and 10 rebounds, making a key layup with 2:45 to go and dunking a minute later. Klay Thompson scored 16 points and Draymond Green added 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists as he came back from a shoulder injury for the defending champs.

Kyle Kuzma scored 27 points and fellow rookie Lonzo Ball had 24 points with five 3-pointers in his first visit to Oracle Arena. Julius Randle added 21 points off the bench for Los Angeles, which snapped the Rockets’ 14-game winning streak Wednesday night in Houston.

Durant shot 9 for 20 in the Warriors’ 10th win in a row at home against the Lakers and sixth overall after Golden State outlasted the Lakers in overtime Monday night in Los Angeles.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr and Lakers coach and former top Golden State assistant Luke Walton had a nice chat near the Warriors bench after the final buzzer.

Still without two-time MVP Stephen Curry, Golden State got some much-needed reinforcements.

Green returned after missing five of six games with soreness in his right shoulder, while Andre Iguodala also was back after sitting out Wednesday night’s win against Memphis with flu-like symptoms.

The Lakers, who trailed by as many as 23 in the third quarter before getting within 84-72 going into the final 12 minutes, briefly took their first lead of the night at 89-88 on Randle’s 3-pointer with 7:43 remaining.

Los Angeles cut the lead to 86-81 on a steal by Josh Hart and Kuzma’s layup with 9:39 left, then 88-86 when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a 3-pointer at the 8:09 mark.

iPhone slowdown for old models addresses aging battery issues, says Apple

iPhone users have recently taken note of performance slowdowns with older models and made it known on the Internet. Apple says the slowdowns are intentional, to address problems that may occur with an aging battery pack.

Lithium-ion batteries are known to deteriorate over time. This means they hold less charge and would require more frequent recharging. The lower power output could lead to devices suddenly shutting down in an effort to preserve internal components.

According to a statement made by Apple to The Verge, the company chose to slow down older iPhone models to compensate for the aging batteries. By lowering the demand the device makes of the battery, the older iPhone can remain stable and avoid sudden shutdowns or other component failures.

Apple made this feature available to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE in 2016. They’ve also added it to the iPhone 7 through the iOS 11.2 update and plan to include the feature in future phones.

Reddit users have also noticed that replacing the batteries of their aging iPhones rolled back the slowdown effect. This returned their devices to peak performance as if brand new.

While Apple may have meant well, The Verge noted that the company’s approach may only help feed conspiracy theories. The phone manufacturer could make battery replacement easier and educate consumers about it. Instead, theories suggest that Apple makes it difficult on purpose to force the purchase of a new iPhone every 12 to 24 months. Alfred Bayle/JB

Thompson, Durant lead injured Warriors to 10th straight win

OAKLAND, California — Klay Thompson scored 27 of his 29 points in the first half and made his first nine field goals, leading the undermanned Golden State Warriors past the Memphis Grizzlies 97-84 on Wednesday (Thursday Manila time) for their 10th straight win.

Kevin Durant added 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots as defending champion Golden State was down five regulars again, including two-time MVP Stephen Curry out for his sixth straight game with a sprained right ankle.

Thompson shot 10 for 16 overall and didn’t miss until a 3-point try with 6:10 left before halftime.

Curry tweeted in the midst of Thompson’s hot start: “Somebody is having a great game!”

Thompson received a rare technical — his seventh in seven seasons — with 10:22 left in the game for arguing when he thought he was fouled.

Marc Gasol had 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Memphis, which started a stretch with seven of eight games on the road. The Grizzlies were 10 of 44 in the second half, shot 12 for 31 from 3-point range and committed 17 turnovers.

Omri Casspi came off the bench to contribute 12 points and six rebounds. While coach Steve Kerr would far prefer a healthy roster, he appreciates the opportunities many of his role players are receiving to play more significant an important minutes.

“I like it,” said Kerr, who certainly wasn’t going to be pleased with the 16 turnovers.

The Warriors began a seven-game homestand in a stretch with nine of 10 games at home before next playing away from Oracle Arena on Jan. 3 at Dallas.

Curry did some light on-court work at morning shootaround a day after the Warriors said the two-time MVP would be out at least another week with the ankle injury. Kerr said it was Curry’s first time moving laterally, and he wouldn’t scrimmage or practice before being examined again.

“He had a good day today. He was working out with Steve Nash and Q (Bruce Fraser) and got a lot of good stuff and it looked like he was moving pretty well,” Kerr said. “A good sign.”

Golden State has won all six games since Curry injured the ankle on Dec. 4 at New Orleans.

Curry will miss two more games this week, as well as the Christmas Day showdown against Cleveland before getting evaluated again.

UK to offer at least 10 mbps internet access to all residents by 2020

The government of the United Kingdom plans to provide all its citizens with no less than a 10 megabytes per second of internet access within the next couple of years.

In a statement, the U.K. government announced plans to make access to high speed broadband internet a legal right. Implementation of this by independent regulator Ofcom will take two years from the laying down of secondary legislation in 2018.

By 2020, if plans push through, every home and business within the U.K. would have at least 10 mbps internet access. The speed will be increased over time as connectivity requirements evolve. Anyone will have a legal right to request for internet connectivity but will have to shoulder costs, in the same way that people pay for utilities, like with having a landline phone.

Culture secretary Karen Bradley said, “This is all part of our work on ensuring that Britain’s telecoms infrastructure is fit for the future and will continue to deliver the connectivity that consumers need in the digital age.”

Making internet access a legal right also helps in bringing connectivity to hard-to-reach areas. JB

North Korean hackers expand from political to financial targets

SEOUL—The messages are alluring, the pictures are attractive. But the women seeking to beguile South Korean bitcoin executives could actually be hackers from North Korea in disguise, experts warn.

In the face of sanctions over its banned nuclear and ballistic missile programs, cash-strapped North Korea is deploying an army of well-trained hackers with an eye on a lucrative new source of hard currency, they say.

Its cyberwarfare abilities first came to prominence when it was accused of hacking into Sony Pictures Entertainment to take revenge for “The Interview,” a satirical film that mocked its leader, Kim Jong-un.

But Pyongyang has rapidly expanded from political to financial targets, such as the central bank of Bangladesh and bitcoin exchanges around the world, with Washington this week blaming it for the WannaCry ransomware that wreaked havoc earlier this year.

Shutdown

And a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange shut down on Tuesday after losing 17 percent of its assets in a hacking—its second cyberattack this year, with North Korea accused of being behind the first.

According to multiple South Korean reports citing Seoul’s intelligence agency, North Korean hackers approach workers at digital exchanges by posing as beautiful women on Facebook, striking online conversations and eventually sending files containing malicious code.

They also bombard executives with e-mails posing as job seekers sending resumés—with the files containing malware to steal personal and exchange data.

Moon Jong-hyun, director at Seoul cybersecurity firm EST Security, said North Korea had stepped up online honeytrap tactics targeting South Korea’s government and military officials in recent years.

“They open Facebook accounts and maintain the online friendship for months before backstabbing the targets in the end,” Moon told a cybersecurity forum, adding many profess to be studying at a US college or working at a research think tank.

Criminal enterprise

Simon Choi, director of Seoul cybersecurity company Hauri, has accumulated vast troves of data on Pyongyang’s hacking activities and has been warning about potential ransomware attacks by North Korea since 2016.

The United States has reportedly stepped up cyberattacks of its own against North Korea.

But Choi told Agence France-Presse (AFP): “The North’s hacking operations are upgrading from attacks on ‘enemy states’ to a shady, lucrative moneymaking machine in the face of more sanctions.”

Pyongyang’s hackers have showed interest in bitcoin since at least 2012, he said, with attacks spiking whenever the cryptocurrency surges—and it has soared around 20-fold this year.

US cybersecurity company FireEye noted that a lack of regulations and “lax antimoney laundering controls” in many countries make digital currencies an “attractive tactic” for North Korea.

Cryptocurrencies, FireEye said in a September report, were “becoming a target of interest by a regime that operates in many ways like a criminal enterprise.”

The company documented three attempts by Pyongyang to hack into Seoul cryptocurrency exchanges between May and July as a way to “fund the state or personal coffers of Pyongyang’s elite.”

In October, Lazarus, a hacking group linked with North Korea, launched a malicious phishing campaign targeting people in the bitcoin industry with a fake but lucrative job offer, according to US cybersecurity firm Secureworks.

Hacking attacks targeting digital currencies are only the latest in the long list of alleged online financial heists by North Korea.

North Korea is blamed for a massive $81-million cyberheist from the Bangladesh central bank in 2016, as well as the theft of $60 million from Taiwan’s Far Eastern International Bank in October.

Although Pyongyang has angrily denied the accusations—which it described as a “slander” against the authorities—analysts say the digital footprints left behind suggest otherwise.

Proceeds from such actions are laundered through casinos in the Philippines and Macau or money exchanges in China, said Lim Jong-in, a cybersecurity professor at Korea University in Seoul, making it “virtually impossible” to trace. —AFP

Moreland remains with Red Sox, agrees to $13M, 2-year deal

BOSTON — First baseman Mitch Moreland has agreed to a $13 million, two-year contract to return to the Boston Red Sox and play for former teammate Alex Cora.

“He’s a great baseball guy,” said Moreland, who was on the Texas Rangers when Cora made a brief appearance there in 2010. “He was a great teammate then, and I don’t expect anything different from him as a manager.”

Moreland, 32, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Rangers. The 32-year-old left-handed batter hit .246 with 22 homers 79 RBIs in his first season with the team last year. His home run total was just behind Mookie Betts (24) and Hanley Ramirez (23) on the Red Sox, who hit an AL-low 168 for the season.

“I love playing here, love the guys, everything about it,” Moreland said in a conference call with reporters. “Looking forward to being back and maybe taking care of some unfinished business.”

Moreland broke his toe last year, but never went on the disabled list, playing in a career-high 149 games.

“I don’t like to point fingers at things. I know it didn’t feel good,” he said. “That’s who I am, I’m trying to go out there and play. … I’m not planning to break my toe this year, so hopefully we can stay out of that.”

Moreland gets $6.5 million in each of the next two seasons as part of the deal announced Monday. He can earn $500,000 annually in performance bonuses: $250,000 each for 500 and 550 plate appearances.

Red Sox baseball boss Dave Dombrowski said the team wanted to look around before bringing Moreland back. When Carlos Santana signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, that removed one of the big options.

“We jumped in at that point,” Dombrowski said. “We figured we would move forward at that time.”

Moreland’s return could reduce playing time for Ramirez, who could be traded. Ramirez’s contract includes a $22 million option for 2019 that would become guaranteed if he has 1,050 plate appearances in 2017 and ’18 combined and passes a physical at the end of next season. Ramirez had 553 plate appearances last season.

Ramirez started 108 games at designated hitter and 17 at first base last season, when he was slowed by a left shoulder injury that required surgery in October. Bryce Brentz and Blake Swihart are DH options against left-handed pitchers.

“Hanley will be capable of playing first base this year,” Dombrowski said. “If we open the season as we are right now with no other additions, I’m really not sure how that would split.”

Moreland won a Gold Glove in 2016 and was a finalist for the award last season. Dombrowski said his defense makes him more valuable than he may appear.

“There are a couple of guys that hit more home runs, that from an offensive perspective might be more appealing,” Dombrowski said.

#KicksStalker: LeBron wears ‘equality’ shoes – 1 black, 1 white; speaks about Trump

WASHINGTON — LeBron James made a statement during an NBA game with his shoes — one black, one white, with the word “equality” in capital gold letters on the back of each.

Then, after the game, James made a statement about President Donald Trump, saying: “This is a beautiful country and we’re never going to let one person dictate how beautiful and how powerful we are.”

The four-time NBA MVP was asked about his choice of footwear for the first half of his Cleveland Cavaliers’ 106-99 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday night at an arena about a mile from the White House.

“Obviously, we know where we are right now,” James began. “And we know who’s at the helm here.”

He continued, speaking about the importance of “having equal rights and being able to stand for something and speak for something and keeping the conversation going.”

James then referred to his past discussions of Trump, saying: “Obviously, I’ve been … very outspoken and well-spoken about the situation that’s going on at the helm here. … Equality is all about understanding our rights, understanding what we stand for and how powerful we are as men and as women, black or white or Hispanic. It doesn’t matter your race.”

Earlier this year, James called Trump “a bum” on Twitter and also said at Cleveland’s pre-season media day: “He doesn’t understand how many kids, no matter the race, look up to the president of the United State for guidance, for leadership, for words of encouragement. He doesn’t understand that, and that’s what makes me more sick than anything.”

Then, for Cleveland’s first regular-season game, James donned a pair of black sneakers with the “equality” message. But this was the first time James chose to wear one white and one black shoe.

At halftime Sunday, he changed into other sneakers. James finished the game with 20 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds.

“I didn’t play well in the first half, and I’m very superstitious, so I took ’em off,” James explained, before joking: “I didn’t play well in the second half, either, so if there was a third half, I would have took those off.”                 /kga

Ronaldo goal gives Real Madrid its 3rd Club World Cup title

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Cristiano Ronaldo scored from a free-kick as Real Madrid claimed its third Club World Cup title after beating Brazilian team Gremio 1-0 Saturday.

The Ballon d’Or winner fired his right-footed shot between two players in Gremio’s defensive wall, leaving goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe no hope of reaching the ball before it bounced inside the post in the 53rd minute.

“(Ronaldo) is always there at the key moments,” Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. “Nobody can do what he does.”

Madrid became the first team to retain the FIFA Club World Cup title, and collected its fifth trophy of 2017, along with the Champions League, Spanish league, European Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup.

Ronaldo celebrated the goal by rushing to Madrid’s dugout where he was embraced by his teammates. The goal increased Ronaldo’s record to seven goals in the competition. He also scored in Madrid’s 2-1 comeback win over Al Jazira in the semifinals.

“What am I going to say? The numbers speak for themselves. I am very happy. The team played fantastically well and it has won another title,” Ronaldo said. “We played a very good game and deserved the victory.”

Madrid equaled Barcelona’s record of three titles for the short knockout tournament between the champions of FIFA’s six continental confederations and the host nation’s league winner.

European clubs have won 10 of the last 11 Club World Cups, with only Brazil’s Corinthians interrupting that streak in 2012 when it defeated Chelsea.

Zidane played the same starting 11 from last season’s Champions League final in June, when Madrid crushed Juventus 4-1 — led by Ronaldo’s double.

The European champions outclassed Gremio throughout the match, but the closest they got to scoring in the first half was Dani Carvajal’s goal-bound volley in the 20th that was cleared by Pedro Geromel.

Gremio had to scramble on several occasions to stop Madrid inside its own area. At the other end, a free-kick by Edilson for the South American champions swerved onto the top netting near the half-hour mark.

Geromel had tried to set the tone early on with a hard tackle that left Ronaldo writhing in pain, and hoping for a booking that never came.

Ronaldo had a poor first half. He twice erred in short passes with his back heel that failed to reach his teammates, and he squandered a good opportunity when he took too long to shoot when a loose ball fell to him close to the net.

All that changed after the interval. Ronaldo baited Jailson into fouling him outside the area with some fancy dribbling, setting up his winner.

Ronaldo thought he had another goal moments later, but Karim Benzema was ruled offside before he passed the ball back to Ronaldo.

Marcelo Grohe kept his side in the game by pushing Luka Modric’s shot onto his post and denied Ronaldo a second goal, but Gremio never mounted a serious response to get the equalizer.

Mexico’s Pachuca beat Al Jazira 4-1 in the third-place match earlier Saturday.

‘Snooze’ feature on FB lets users temporarily hide people, pages

Friendships need not be ended for good any more due to movie spoilers with this new Facebook feature called “Snooze.”

The new Snooze feature works by temporarily hiding posts from people and pages of the user’s choosing. For example, friends who like to post movie spoilers just to watch the internet writhe in agony can be temporarily hidden for 30 days from a user’s News Feed.

Furthermore, the Snoozed will not be notified that someone has chosen to temporarily not see their posts.

Like an alarm clock’s snooze function, the Snoozed person or page will eventually return to the user’s News Feed. A notification will be sent to the user before the Snooze period ends. Users can also un-Snooze anyone at their leisure. JB

Kyrie Irving helps Celtics pull away to beat Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kyrie Irving scored 20 points, Jayson Tatum had 19 points and nine rebounds and the Boston Celtics pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 102-93 on Saturday night.

Al Horford added 15 points for Boston. The Celtics shot 49 percent, including 14 of 30 (46.7 percent) from outside the arc.

Marc Gasol led Memphis with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Tyreke Evans added 25 points, and Dillon Brooks had with 14 points, hitting a season-best four 3-pointers.

After Memphis used a 21-point third quarter by Gasol to take a 73-71 lead after three, the Celtics opened the final frame with the first 16 points for an 87-73 lead. That put the game out of reach as Memphis lost its 17th in the last 19.

Gasol got untracked in the early part of the third, scoring 10 points before the midway point of the frame. That pulled Memphis even with the Celtics.

And then Gasol kept scoring, converting 8 of 10 shots and tallying 21 points in the frame.

That helped Memphis take a 73-71 lead heading to the fourth. But the Grizzlies couldn’t maintain the momentum missing its first seven shots as Boston rebuilt the lead to double digits.

The Celtics shot well early, hanging around 60 percent through the early stages of the second quarter. That, combined with missing only two of their first seven shots from outside the arc, helped the Boston margin swell to 21 points.

Memphis would make a bit of a dent in the lead, mainly behind its reserves. The Celtics still maintained a 48-40 lead at intermission.

TIP-INS

Celtics: Rookie F Daniel Theis, who broke his nose in Friday’s loss to Utah, was back in action against the Grizzlies, wearing a mask. … Tatum, who entered the game, leading the league in 3-point shooting at 50 percent (48-96), made both of his shots from outside the arc in the game.

Grizzlies: The Celtics outscored Memphis 31-12 in the first quarter, marking the 14th time in the last 18 games that the Grizzlies were outscored in a quarter by at least nine points. … Gasol’s 21 points in the third were one shy of a Memphis record for points in a quarter.

Amazon opts for truce, prepares sales of Apple TV, Chromecast

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Amazon is angling for a truce in its two-year battle with Apple and Google over streaming gadgets: It says it is preparing to put Apple TV and Chromecast back on sale.

A spokeswoman for Amazon confirmed Friday it is preparing to sell the devices. However, fresh links for the products that went live on Thursday indicate they are still unavailable.

Amazon stopped selling Apple TV streaming devices in late 2015 in retaliation for Apple not making Amazon’s Prime Video app available on Apple TVs. It said at the time the move was to reduce possible confusion caused by items sold on its store not playing videos bundled with its Prime shipping plan. It also stopped selling Google’s popular Chromecast streaming device that year.

In a major sign of the coming armistice, Apple made the Prime Video app available on Apple TV last week.

Amazon’s decision to start reselling Google’s Chromecast comes after the search giant had stepped up the pressure by threatening to pull its subsidiary YouTube from Amazon’s Fire TV on Jan. 1.

Google had said last week that it would also disable YouTube on Amazon’s new voice-activated speaker that comes with a screen attached — the Echo Show. Shortly after, Amazon also stopped selling Nest’s Thermostat E, which had once been “Amazon’s Choice” in home programmable thermostats. Nest, like Google, is part of Alphabet Inc.

Google argued that Amazon’s version of YouTube was unauthorized and a violation of its terms of service because it initially failed to support features like the ability to log in, comment and see one’s subscribed channels. Google had also pulled YouTube from Windows Phone platforms in 2013 when the app failed to live up to its standards.

Mountain View, California-based Google hailed Amazon’s move, saying it is in “productive discussions with Amazon to reach an agreement for the benefit of our mutual customers.” Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Saunders seeks to defend title in Lemieux’s back yard

Boxing champion Billy Joe Saunders hopes that new surroundings brings out the best in him as he puts his World Boxing Organization middleweight title on the line against David Lemieux.

The 28-year-old Englishman will fight for the first time in North America on Saturday as he faces the Canadian at the Laval Place Bell arena in Lemieux’s home province of Quebec.

“I’m used to fighting outside the U.K.. I’m a traveler of the world,” Saunders said. “I don’t care if there’s a million people (cheering for Lemieux). It’s just me and him in that ring, end of the story.”

Boxing promoter Frank Warren said Saunders won’t be intimidated by the atmosphere.

“This is a tough fight in the other guy’s back yard, but this is what Bill wanted,” Warren said.

Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) is hoping to rely on his ring savvy and boxing skills to disarm the explosive punching power of Lemieux, who has 33 knockouts in 38 victories.

“(He’s been winning) against bums, knocking out old men,” Saunders said of Lemieux.

In his last fight in September, Saunders made his second defence of his title against Willie Monroe.

He won the WBO title by outpointing Ireland’s Andy Lee two years ago.

Saunders holds the only world title in his weight class that is not in the hands of Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin is in talks for a rematch with Canelo Alvarez on May 5 and if the pieces fall together, the winner of Saturday’s bout could challenge in a unification fight against Golovkin or Alvarez in September.

Lemieux has recorded four straight wins since being stopped in the eighth round by Golovkin two years ago.

In his last fight, Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) outpointed Marcos Reyes at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena in May.

Lemieux is so confident of a victory that he boasted it would take a low blow from a baseball bat for him to lose to Saunders.

“I don’t know how he can say that he will knock me out. He’s going to hit me in the crotch with a baseball bat? There’s no way Saunders is going to drop me. But if he somehow makes it to the end of the fight, I promise he’ll be in the hospital.”

Canada boosts protection for endangered whales

The Canadian government said Wednesday it will boost protection for two species of endangered whales.

Since June, 12 North Atlantic right whales have been found dead in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which is home to nearly a quarter of the last 458 specimens of this kind of whale. Canadian environmentalists say it is among the most threatened in the world.

The Ministry of Fisheries said it would set up “critical habitat” protection areas for these whales off the coast of Nova Scotia and for beluga whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The goal is to safeguard “specific geographic locations and conditions essential for the survival and recovery of the species, such as where they give birth, hatch, feed or raise their young,” the ministry said.

The government is especially worried about the North Atlantic right whales because their mortality rate in 2017 has been higher than the average of recent years.

Autopsies showed whales bleeding to death after what were likely collisions with ships or getting caught up in fishing nets.

Fisheries Minister Dominique LeBlanc wants officials to update identified critical habitats because of “changing population distributions as a result of climate change.”

The government already took measures last year to protect beluga whales and white sturgeon. It denied TransCanada permission to build an oil facility on the coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where female belugas give birth in the spring. AB

Garin denies negotiating for Dengvaxia price

Former Health Secretary Janette Garin denied negotiating with Sanofi Pasteur on the price of the anti-dengue vaccine in an attempt to reduce its cost.

During the joint hearing of the Senate blue ribbon, health and finance committees on Thursday, Senator Richard Gordon asked if Garin negotiated with the French pharmaceutical giant to reduce the cost of the Dengvaxia vaccine in 2015.

“I strongly deny that. I did not negotiate with the price, but Sanofi came to the Philippines and presented their proposal to the government,” Garin said.

She narrated that she was late during the meeting, but some Department of Health (DOH) directors and an undersecretary were already there.

“So I came last in the meeting but I made a joke your honor because it was already at the end of the meeting. I said just update me and I said sana po buy one take one ‘yan if the private buys one, give one to the government,” she said.

“But I never negotiated for the price because we didn’t have money (at that time),” she added.

The P3.5 billion vaccination drive was launched in 2016 when Garin was still health chief.

According to the timeline of events submitted by former DOH Secretary Paulyn Rosell-Ubial to the Senate panels, Garin “negotiated with Sanofi to reduce the cost of the vaccines on June 9, 2015.”

The alleged negotiation, according to the timeline, happened after Garin went to Paris, France on May 14, 2015 and met with Sanofi Pasteur officials and discussed the vaccine’s cost over dinner.

This meeting was followed by Sanofi’s submission on Oct. 29 of an application to include the dengue vaccine in the Philippine National Formulary (PNF) pending the Certificate of Product Registration (CPR) issuance of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). /cbb

Tigertown: Morris, Trammell elected to baseball Hall of Fame

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Fittingly, Jack Morris reached the Hall of Fame in extra innings.

Morris was elected to the Hall by its Modern Era committee on Sunday along with former Detroit Tigers teammate Alan Trammell, completing a joint journey from Motown to Cooperstown.

The big-game pitcher and star shortstop were picked by 16 voters who considered 10 candidates whose biggest contributions came from 1970-87. Morris got 14 votes and Trammell drew 13, one more than the minimum needed.

They will be enshrined on July 29, and fitting they’ll go in together. They both began their big league careers in 1977 with Detroit and played 13 seasons alongside each other with the Tigers.

“The time that I’ve spent wondering if this day would ever come seems to be vanished and erased right now because it did come, and it’s amazing,” the 62-year-old Morris said during a conference call.

Trammell felt overwhelmed.

“I came to realization that it might not happen, and I was OK with that. I really was,” he said. “If people thought it was a tad short, I could live with that.”

Former catcher Ted Simmons fell one vote shy, and former players’ union head Marvin Miller was five short of the 12 needed.

“It’s not a big surprise,” Miller’s son, Peter, said from Japan. “I think my father’s place in history is understood by all baseball players, all baseball fans and the general public.”

Morris had 254 wins and seven more in the postseason, including his 10-inning shutout in a 1-0 win for Minnesota over Atlanta in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series.

“No question it was my defining moment in baseball,” Morris said. “I never thought I was in trouble and I knew I could get out of it if I was. So I had the best mindset I’ve ever had in my entire on that night.”

Morris also pitched for World Series winners in Detroit — with Trammell, in 1984 — and Toronto in 1992. His 3.90 career ERA tops Red Ruffing’s 3.80 as the highest of any pitcher in the Hall.

“For years my earned run average has been an issue for a lot of people that thought it was not good enough for Hall of Fame honors, but I never once thought about pitching for an ERA. I always thought about completing games, starting games, eating up innings and trying to win games more importantly than anything else,” he said. “Today’s generation is different. In my heart of hearts I don’t think for a second that guys that are pitching, the elite guys especially that are pitching in the game today, could not do what we did. I know they could. But they haven’t been conditioned to it, both physically and mentally.”

His 175 complete games included 20 in 1983. The entire big league total this year was 59, and no pitcher had more than five. He said sabermetrics should not be used to evaluate his era.

“Now I’m getting analyzed by a bunch of numbers and things that didn’t exist when I played, he said. “Had they existed maybe I would have had a better understanding of what it would have meant to not pitch through pain, to not go deeper into games on nights that I told my manager, ‘I’m fine’ when I wasn’t. But I don’t regret doing that, because if you go to the wall and never try to push down the wall, you’ll never know if you can.”

Now 59, Trammell was a steady presence in the middle of the diamond while playing all 20 of his seasons in Detroit, 19 of them next to double-play partner Lou Whitaker.

Trammell was the 1984 World Series MVP, hitting .450 as the Tigers trounced San Diego in five games and finished off a season in which they started out 35-5.

A six-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glover, Trammell scored 1,231 runs and drove in 1,003. He batted .285 with 185 home runs and a .352 on-base average — he walked 850 times and struck out 874.

Trammell never came close to election during his 15 tries in Hall voting by Baseball Writers’ Association of America members, peaking at 40.9 percent in 2016. Starting at 22 percent in his first Hall ballot appearance in 2000, Morris reached at high of 67.7 percent in 2003, his next to last appearance.

Trammell’s next visit to the Hall will certainly last longer than his first trip to the shrine in upstate New York. That was in 1995, when the Tigers played the Cubs in the Hall of Fame exhibition game.

Wearing his No. 3 jersey, Trammell jogged the couple blocks and hurried through the Hall in 30 minutes while the teams were limbering up at Doubleday Field.

“I definitely want to come back some day,” he said that afternoon, “but I probably wouldn’t go through it in my uniform.”

Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker and Luis Tiant also were on the ballot.

Miller, who headed the players’ union from 1966-82 was on the ballot for the seventh time. Miller sent a letter to the BBWAA in 2008, four years before he died, saying he didn’t want to be considered anymore.

The BBWAA annual vote on players will be announced Jan. 24. Chipper Jones, Jim Thome and Omar Vizquel are among 19 first-time candidates, and Trevor Hoffman, Vladimir Guerrero, Edgar Martinez, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are among the holdovers.

Depleted Spurs beat Suns for 8th win in 9 games

PHOENIX, Arizona—San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich says Bryn Forbes has “never seen a shot he didn’t like.”

There was one in particular that both of them must have loved Saturday night.
Forbes sank his only 3-pointer of the night with 21.5 seconds to play and the severely depleted Spurs held off a fourth-quarter Phoenix rally to beat the Suns 104-101.

“It was our fifth game in seven nights, on the road, had a back-to-back to end it all,” Popovich said. “I thought we were pretty tired, but I thought they hung in as well as they could.”

The Spurs left Pau Gasol and Manu Ginobili home to rest after a victory over Boston on Friday night and had Danny Green (left groin tightness) and Kyle Anderson (left MCL sprain) out with injuries.

Still, they led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before the Suns came back to take their first lead of the night, 100-99, on Marquese Chriss’ breakaway dunk with 1:32 to go after a San Antonio turnover.

Josh Jackson made one of two free throws to boost the Phoenix lead to 101-99 with 29 seconds remaining before Patty Mills got the ball to Forbes, who made his lone 3 in six tries.

“I think every shot is going in,” Forbes said. “He (LaMarcus Aldridge) set a great screen and got me wide open. I couldn’t have asked for a better screen. Patty put it right in my shot pocket. That is what he told me to say. He made a great pass.”

Phoenix’s Mike James scored 25 points, one shy of his career high, but missed a 3-pointer, the Spurs got the rebound and Mills sank two free throws with 1.6 seconds to play.

Jared Dudley’s 3 from the corner went off the side of the backboard at the buzzer.

Mills and Aldridge scored 20 apiece for San Antonio in its fourth straight win and eighth in nine games. T.J. Warren scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half for the Suns, who fell to 0-2 since losing Devin Booker to a left adductor strain that is expected to sideline him two to three weeks.

“Took us 24 minutes to find a group that would play with the right energy,” Phoenix interim coach Jay Triano said. “I mean, we just seemed to be a step slow. You know, I was mixing guys in and out trying to look for offense, defense, anything that would give us some juice and finally got it in the second half.”

San Antonio led by as many as 15 in the first half and 19 in the third quarter before a 12-2 Suns surge to cut the Spurs’ lead to 71-69 on Troy Daniels’ 3-pointer from the corner with 53 seconds left in the period. But Mills made two 3s in the final 10 seconds of the quarter and San Antonio led 79-71 entering the fourth.

Warren rattled in a 3 to punctuate another 12-2 surge that made it tied it 94-94 for the first time since it was 2-2.

Aldridge said it was good to have to “learn how to execute down the stretch with different guys.”

“A lot of these guys haven’t been in that type of moment, haven’t been in the game down the stretch,” he said. “We had some mistakes but just helping these guys get better and having them be in those types of moments is something that is going to make us better down the stretch.”

Bulls end 10-game skid with OT win over Hornets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Chicago Bulls thought they were trending in the right direction in the last few games of their 10-game losing streak. On Friday night, they kept their poise and finished strong.

Lauri Markkanen had 24 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime, and 12 rebounds to lead Chicago to a 119-111 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

“Lauri showed again that he’s going to be a heck of a player in this league,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. “He was awesome down the stretch making big, clutch plays for us.”

Robin Lopez had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago. Kris Dunn scored 20 points, Justin Holiday had 17 and David Nwaba chipped in with 11 for the Bulls, who are 2-0 against Charlotte and 2-20 against the rest of the league.

Dwight Howard had 25 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Hornets, his second 20-20 game of the season. Kemba Walker added 20 points, and Marvin Williams had a season-high 17.

“We have to rely on (Howard) quite a bit,” Hornets’ coach Stephen Silas said. “Dwight was great tonight as far as his post presence, paint catches, rebounding and just keeping us in the game.”

Charlotte made up a two-possession deficit in the final minute. Walker made a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds left to force overtime in a back-and-forth game that featured 17 lead changes and 20 ties. Neither team led by more than eight.

The extra period belonged to Chicago as the Bulls never trailed.

“We thought, as a team, the last couple close games, we thought we could have won them. It just happened down the stretch we didn’t execute,” Dunn said. “We finally got the monkey off our back. It felt good, and we should start something new.”

The Bulls used an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter and gain an 83-79 lead, setting up a frantic final few minutes.

“The thing I was most impressed by with our guys was how they just kept playing, how they showed the resolve,” Hoiberg said. “After Kemba tied it up to send it into overtime … to be able to keep our composure and make winning plays was huge.”

TIP-INS

Bulls: Chicago, despite a significant size disadvantage, outscored the Hornets 56-50 in the paint. … Nikola Mirotic saw 14 minutes of action, scoring six points, in his return from injury. Mrotic suffered facial fractures in a fight with teammate Bobby Portis during practice on Oct. 17.

Hornets: Charlotte was without a pair of big men as Frank Kaminsky and Cody Zeller did not play after picking up injuries in Wednesday’s loss to the Warriors. … Silas coached the Hornets for the third straight game in place of Steve Clifford, who is out indefinitely with health issues.

CALLING THE RESERVES

The Bulls’ bench provided 32 points and tight defense to keep the game close.

“The second unit was key,” Holiday said. “It was like, ‘Right now is when we need to make our push,’ and they came in and I think might’ve gotten four stops in a row. … The second unit got us the lead and we won the game.”

NO TIME TO REST

The short-handed Hornets will turn around and play again Saturday against the Los Angeles Lakers. Four Charlotte players were on the floor for at least 39 minutes against the Bulls, and Silas believes fatigue will be a factor.

“It’s a mindset. We have to be in the right frame of mind to go out and play well,” he said. “Guys are going to have to come off the bench and play more minutes than usual.”

UP NEXT

Bulls: Host the Knicks on Saturday night.

Hornets: Host the Lakers on Saturday night.

San Diego wins ‘comic con’ trademark battle

SAN DIEGO — A jury is siding with San Diego Comic-Con in a court battle with a rival pop-culture convention in Utah over naming rights to the phrase “comic con.”

Salt Lake City-based KUTV reports the jury decided Friday Salt Lake Comic Con used the trademark without permission. They awarded the California event $20,000, far less than the $12 million they’d sought.

Utah organizer Dan Farr says they plan to appeal.

San Diego lawyers argue Salt Lake City stole their name to benefit from their work. Utah organizers contend the phrase is generic and used by 140 different events nationwide.

San Diego Comic-Con, considered the flagship of the popular convention circuit, filed the trademark violation lawsuit in 2014 against the rapidly growing Salt Lake convention. Both are known for guests elaborately costumed as superheros and movie villains.

Jonas brother testifies at FIFA bribery trial about concert

NEW YORK — The United States trial of three former South American soccer officials charged in the FIFA corruption scandal took another odd twist on Thursday with surprise testimony by pop star Kevin Jonas about attending a Paul McCartney show in Argentina.

Prosecutors called the former member of the Jonas Brothers to bolster earlier testimony by a government cooperator that one of the defendants, Juan Angel Napout, had been bribed with pricey McCartney tickets in 2010. The defense had questioned whether the concert ever took place.

Jonas, 30, did not have personal knowledge about Napout or the bribes but confirmed the ex-Beatle had performed at River Plate Stadium two days before a Jonas Brothers show at the same venue, just as prosecutors contended.

“Any time you get to see Paul McCartney it is pretty special,” the onetime teen heartthrob told a jury in federal court in Brooklyn when asked by Assistant US Attorney Kristin Mace how he liked the show.

Asked on cross-examination to name the song McCartney opened with, Jonas responded, “We actually arrived two songs late. The traffic is kind of bad going with 85,000 people to one concert.”

According to a set list archive on McCartney’s website, the opener was “Magical Mystery Tour.”

Jonas’ appearance — unannounced until he took the witness stand and lasting perhaps three minutes — took less time than lawyers’ arguments over whether he should be there in the first place. Defense attorneys argued that calling him as a witness would create a needless spectacle. But the judge agreed with Mace’s position that it was necessary to hear from “somebody in the audience to establish one fact.”

The episode came at a trial that has seen a juror dismissed for sleeping, and defendant Manuel Burga was accused of threatening another cooperator over testimony about tens of millions in bribes paid to soccer officials. Prosecutors said Burga stared at the witness and ran his fingers across his throat in a slicing motion, prompting the judge to place further restrictions on his house arrest even though Burga’s lawyer claimed his client merely had an itch.

Napout, former president of Paraguay’s soccer federation; Burga, ex-president of Peru’s federation; and Jose Maria Marin, former president of Brazil’s federation, have pleaded not guilty to charges they participated in a vast conspiracy involving tens of millions in bribes paid in exchange for help winning lucrative commercial rights to the World Cup and other major tournaments.

The Jonas Brothers broke up in 2013. The New Jersey siblings formed the band in 2005 and built a fan base through their connection to the Disney Channel.                       /kga

Video game platform Steam no longer accepts bitcoin

Investors of the popular cryptocurrency bitcoin were certainly delighted as its stock value has risen exponentially these past few weeks.

But among those not too pleased was Valve’s popular gaming and digital distribution platform Steam, which recently disallowed bitcoin transactions due to its volatility and high fees.

In a recent blog post, Steam addressed the recent surge and explained why it won’t be able to support the alternative payment system much longer.

“In the past few months we’ve seen an increase in the volatility in the value of bitcoin and a significant increase in the fees to process transactions on the bitcoin network. For example, transaction fees that are charged to the customer by the bitcoin network have skyrocketed this year, topping out at close to $20 a transaction last week (compared to roughly $0.20 when we initially enabled bitcoin),” the announcement read.

“Unfortunately, Valve has no control over the amount of the fee. These fees result in unreasonably high costs for purchasing games when paying with bitcoin. The high transaction fees cause even greater problems when the value of bitcoin itself drops dramatically.”

Furthermore, since the cryptocurrency’s value keeps rapidly changing, Steam also had to make a lot of compromises in terms of purchasing.

Still, Steam is not closing its doors on possibly accepting the cryptocurrency once again in the future, stating: “The company adds that it may re-evaluate if accepting the cryptocurrency makes sense at a later date.”  Khristian Ibarrola /ra

Owning VS. Renting: Which Is Better For You?

It’s quite common to get frustrated when renting. After all, you’re paying often expensive rent each month, sometimes even putting work into the property, and while it does cover your accommodation, once you move out you’ve got nothing to show for it. If you own your home however, your monthly mortgage payments are similar to paying rent except they are going directly towards your own home: your own investment. Once you own your home outright, it’s a huge asset, especially in a city with such a high and competitive real estate market.

Many people, if financially able, would choose owning a home as the money they put into accommodation goes directly into the property, their own investment. There are, however, considerations to take into account whether renting or owning. Depending on your lifestyle, owning may not be right for you even if you do have the cash for a down payment.

In this article, we’ll take a quick look at some of the pros and cons of owning versus renting.

Owning

Advantages to owning a home include:

Owning a home gives you a sense of stability and of ownership. Many people grow up imagining they will one day own property. If you want to settle and start a family, owning a home can give you the stability to do so.

Buying a house is likely the largest purchase you will ever make. While it takes time to pay off a mortgage, a home is a good investment, one which you can also keep in the family should you choose.

If you own, you have more freedom when it comes to renovations and home improvements. No more dealing with potentially difficult landlords.

There are certain tax deductions you can make as a homeowner, such as deductions on property tax and on interest paid.

Potential disadvantages include:

You will have to spend more money. Even though your mortgage payments may be the same or less than paying rent, there are still considerable expenses, especially in the first few years of home ownership. This can include such expenses as utilities, insurance, and property tax. Make sure you fully understand the expenses before you buy. A mortgage broker can help advise you in that regard.

Having a mortgage and owning a home is a big commitment, both financially and timewise. If you plan on moving around or travelling a lot, homeownership may not be right for you.

Renting

Advantages of renting property include:

Renting can give you more flexibility. Usually after a year long lease, leases change to month-to-month which can give you the flexibility you need if you are unsure of your future living situation.

As a renter, you will not have to pay for many repairs as those fall under the responsibility of the landlord.

Rent is often cheaper than a mortgage, and you don’t pay property tax.

While disadvantages include:

You must obey the landlord’s rules, which may, for instance, forbid pets.
There are limitations on the appearance of the home and home decor.
    Zero return on your investment.

If you are considering making the move from renting to owning, consult a mortgage broker today. A mortgage broker can help you understand the market and assess your financial situation to help you determine if owning is right for you. Curry hobbled after Warriors roar back on Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS — Stephen Curry was in good spirits, but a little annoyed with himself as he stood on crutches in Golden State’s locker room.

After all the work he’d done to lead the Warriors back from a 21-point deficit in New Orleans, he went for a steal that his team didn’t really need in the waning moments, stepped on E’Twaun Moore’s foot and sprained his right ankle.

“It was a dumb play,” Curry said. “I got caught on E’Twaun’s shoe as I went by him and couldn’t catch myself. So, obviously, it hurt.”

Curry scored 31 points, going 5 of 11 from 3-point range, and had 11 assists before his injury, and the Warriors outscored the Pelicans by 30 in the second half for a 125-115 victory Monday night.

Klay Thompson added 22 points and Kevin Durant and Draymond Green each had 19 for the Warriors, who won their fourth straight. After it was over, Curry went for X-rays on his right ankle, which was surgically
repaired earlier in his career. Curry said the images “thankfully” came back negative.

He also joked that his first thought after the injury was that he wouldn’t be able to play golf with his father on Tuesday in Charlotte, where the Warriors were headed next for a game on Wednesday night.

More somberly, he added that he always looks forward to his team’s annual trip to Charlotte and “playing in front of people that have seen me grow up.”

“Hopefully, my fans still show up and support the other guys if I’m not out there,” he said.
Jure Holiday scored 34 and Moore had a career-high 27 for the Pelicans, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points and 11 rebounds — but also had seven turnovers — before both he and Durant received their second technical fouls of the game while bickering in the final minutes, resulting in ejections for both players.

Cousins didn’t talk after the game. Durant did, criticizing himself for losing his cool, but also stressing that he never felt as though he was close to coming to blows with Cousins and that the officials “threw us out of the game pretty quick.”

“I’m not going to fight nobody. I don’t want to get injured. I don’t want to get suspended. I love to play,” said Durant, ejected from a game for the second time in four days and third time this season. “I’ve got to be more poised. I can’t let anybody take me off my game. I’ve been in the league for too long.

Especially somebody like Cousins. We know that he’s feisty. We know that he’s emotional. We know that he plays that way, so I can’t get involved with that.”

Trailing 69-49 at halftime, the Warriors opened the third quarter with a 15-0 run, with Durant scoring six on two dunks and a fadeaway, while Thompson and Green each added a 3-pointer.

From then on, the game was tight, with the Pelicans only briefly rebuilding a lead as large as 11 on Holiday’s back-to-back 3s late in the third quarter.

Golden State regained the lead at 96-95 on Andre Iguodala’s steal and breakaway dunk with 8:31 left.

New Orleans briefly went back up 95-92 when Darius Miller hit a 3 while being fouled by Curry for a four-point play, but Nick Young responded with consecutive 3s to give Golden State the lead for good, and Green added a pair of late 3s to help seal it.

“As bad as this loss is — and I don’t look at anything as a moral victory — what we keep proving is that we have the ability to play extended minutes with the world champs,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “Now what we have to do as a team is that we have to now find a way to not do it for 32 minutes or 36 minutes, but we’ve got to do it for 48 because that’s the only way you can beat that team.”

TIP-INS

Warriors: C Zaza Pachulia missed his first game this season because of soreness in his left shoulder. … Patrick McCaw left in the second quarter after getting hit on the nose when Cousins followed through on a blocked shot. The Warriors said X-rays were negative, but McCaw did not return.

Pelicans: Star forward Anthony Davis missed his second straight game with a strained left adductor. New Orleans won its previous game without him in Portland on Saturday. … New Orleans matched Golden State’s 16 made 3s.

MOMENTUM SWINGS

New Orleans led by 13 late in the first quarter after a 6-0 mini-run featuring Holiday’s dunk and Cousins’ 3, but the Warriors responded with a 17-3 surge to take a 37-36 lead early in the second quarter.

Curry scored the first six points of the spurt, starting with his 21-foot jumper as he was fouled by Tony Allen.

Rajon Rondo, who had 10 points and 11 assists, helped New Orleans pull away again, assisting on two 3s by Holiday and hitting a pair of his own during a 25-5 run. Rondo’s 10th assist came on Moore’s 3, which put New Orleans up by 21 in the final minute of the first half.

Southern California fire forces thousands to evacuate

SANTA PAULA, California — Ferocious winds in Southern California whipped up an explosive wildfire that forced thousands of homes to evacuate and could soon threaten a city of more than 100,000, authorities said.

The blaze broke out Monday and grew wildly to more than 3,885 hectares (15 square miles) in the hours that followed, consuming vegetation that hasn’t burned in decades, Ventura County Fire Sgt. Eric Buschow said.

The winds were pushing it toward Santa Paula, a city of some 30,000 people about 97 km (60 miles) northwest of Los Angeles. Most of the evacuated homes were in that city.

Authorities said that the city of Ventura, which is 19 km (12 miles) southwest and has 106,000 residents, was likely to feel the effects soon.

“The fire growth is just absolutely exponential,” Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said. “All that firefighters can do when we have winds like this is get out ahead, evacuate people, and protect structures.”

Thomas Aquinas College, a school with about 350 students, has also been evacuated, with students going to their own homes or to those of faculty and staff, the college said in a statement.

One person was killed in an auto accident associated with the fire, officials said. They gave no further details.

At least two structures have burned so far, sheriff’s officials said.

Winds exceeding 64 kph (40 mph) and gusts over 97 kph (60 mph) have been reported in the area and are expected to continue, the National Weather Service said.

Firefighters and aircraft from neighboring Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties were pouring in to help, though the darkness and winds forced the grounding of planes late Monday night.

Thousands of homes were without power in the area.

Time is running out for BuzzFeed, Mashable

BuzzFeed has given up on going public for now and Mashable is looking for an emergency buyer. The honeymoon period looks to be over for online news websites — left fragile by a model built almost entirely on advertising.

Less than two years ago, blog turned news site Mashable was valued at $250 million, with Time Warner among its investors.

Today, its value has plummeted by 80 percent, and it’s reportedly about to be sold to Ziff Davis. The publisher did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, revenues that fell short of expectations at BuzzFeed — built on a combination of pop culture and social networks — mean it is no longer expected to go public next year.

The website has just announced it is letting go of around 100 of its 1,700 employees.

These sites — like others founded in the last 10 years — promised investors huge growth driven by advertising as traditional media battled for survival.

But in the space of a few months, the tide has turned — as Google and Facebook’s chokehold on the online advertising market reaches a critical point.

In 2017, the two internet giants have snapped up 63 percent of advertising revenue, compared to 58 percent last year, according to market researcher eMarketer. Next year, they are projected to rake in a 67 percent share.

“Advertisers are increasingly demanding more granularity in targeting capabilities to reach consumers,” Monica Peart, eMarketer’s senior director of forecasting, said in late September.

“Google and Facebook have positioned themselves at the front of this demand curve.”

‘It’s not magic’

“It’s not magic,” said Alan Mutter, a professor at the University of California Berkeley specializing in the relationship between journalism and technology.

“Web publishers can publish an unlimited number of pages and get an unlimited number of page views but there’s only a limited number of people buying advertising.”

In this standoff with the two Californian behemoths, it’s new players who stack up the disadvantages — as two thirds of their traffic come from social networks and search engines, mostly controlled by Facebook and Google.

And “if you’re spending money on creating content, you’re competing with the masters of the internet who spend nothing” on producing content, Mutter explained.

But despite the brutal reality, few believe these new media will collapse completely — like the internet bubble of the early 2000s.

It may be 20 percent lower than projected, but with revenue of $280 million according to US media, BuzzFeed is still set to end the year with growth.

For Charlie O’Donnell, founder of seed stage investment fund Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, a website financed entirely by advertising is “still viable.”

“But is it viable to the tune of a billion-dollar exit? That’s tough,” he said.

Promised returns on investment and plans to enter the stock market are likely nothing but memories now — except for Vice, the only organization that has reached a viable scale.

Without reaching such a size, success requires building an audience around a specialized subject and consequently attracting advertisers — as seen with Politico, Eater and technology site The Verge.

But for those starting out today, prospects for success are limited.

“I would have to hear a very compelling story that you’re going to serve some new vertical that nobody ever thought of before,” former journalist Mutter said of investing in a new venture.

“I don’t know what that would be. This is very hard to do.” AB

Trump tweet raises questions about why he fired Flynn

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump changed his story Saturday on why he fired Michael Flynn as his national security adviser, now suggesting he knew at the time that Flynn had lied to the FBI as well as to Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Russians during the presidential transition.

That was a turnabout from his initial explanations that Flynn had to go because he hadn’t been straight with Pence about those contacts. Lying to the FBI is a crime, and one that Flynn acknowledged Friday in pleading guilty and agreeing to cooperate with the special counsel’s Russia investigation.

Trump’s tweet: “I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!”

Amid questions raised by the tweet, Trump associates tried to put distance Saturday evening between the president himself and the tweet.

One person familiar with the situation said the tweet was actually crafted by John Dowd, one of the president’s personal attorneys. Dowd declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press on Saturday night.

In another email wrinkle in the investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia, The New York Times reported Saturday that emails among top Trump transition officials suggested that Flynn was in close contact with other senior members of the transition team before and after he spoke to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

A Dec. 29 email from K.T. McFarland, a transition adviser to Trump, suggested that Russian sanctions announced by the Obama administration had been aimed at discrediting Trump’s victory.

She wrote the sanctions could also make it more difficult for Trump to ease tensions with Russia, “which has just thrown the U.S.A. election to him,” she wrote in the emails obtained by the Times. A White House attorney told the newspaper McFarland only meant that Democrats were portraying it that way.

It’s unclear why Trump would cite lying to the FBI as a reason for firing Flynn. Doing so suggests the president knew at the time that Flynn had done something that is against the law, and therefore the investigation could not be as frivolous as he’s been portraying.

It’s also unclear how he would know that, if information about Russian contacts had not reached him, as he has been implying in his own defense.

Flynn left the White House in February, only acknowledging that he had given an incomplete account to Pence of his conversations with Kislyak. After Trump forced Flynn out, he asked FBI Director James Comey to end the bureau’s probe in the matter, according to Comey’s account. Comey refused, and Trump fired him, too.

Then-White House spokesman Sean Spicer said after Flynn’s firing that it was the result of a “trust issue” and the White House counsel’s office had determined there was not a legal issue.

“Whether or not he actually misled the vice president was the issue, and that was ultimately what led to the president asking for and accepting the resignation of Gen. Flynn,” Spicer told reporters on Feb. 14. “That’s it, pure and simple. It was a matter of trust.”

Trump has been publicly dismissive of Comey and of special counsel Robert Mueller’s continuing investigation, and was often generous in his appraisal of Flynn, except to say his adviser could not stay on the job after misleading his vice president.

At the time, Pence said Trump was justified in firing Flynn because Flynn had lied to him. Neither Trump nor Pence indicated concern then that the FBI had not been told the true story.

Pence, who served as head of Trump’s transition, has not publicly commented on Flynn’s plea.

Trump turned to Twitter again later Saturday night, railing about why Flynn was prosecuted but his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, was not for her alleged misdeeds.

He tweeted: “So General Flynn lies to the FBI and his life is destroyed, while Crooked Hillary Clinton, on that now famous FBI holiday “interrogation” with no swearing in and no recording, lies many times…and nothing happens to her? Rigged system, or just a double standard?”

He then added: “Many people in our Country are asking what the ‘Justice’ Department is going to do about the fact that totally Crooked Hillary, AFTER receiving a subpoena from the United States Congress, deleted and ‘acid washed’ 33,000 Emails? No justice!”

Clinton was voluntarily interviewed for more than three hours at FBI headquarters in July 2016. She was not in custody during her interview and so, in accordance with standard FBI and Justice Department protocol, her interview would not have been recorded.

A Justice Department policy on recorded interrogations applies to individuals who have been arrested and are in custody.

It is nonetheless a crime to lie to the FBI about any material fact in an investigation. Comey has said Clinton did not lie to the FBI during her interview.
