Pope Francis secretly met Kentucky clerk over gay marriage licenses

LOS ANGELES/VATICAN CITY -  Pope Francis secretly met a Kentucky county clerk last week who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples and gave her words of encouragement, her attorney said.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis and her husband met with the pope during the Washington leg of his visit to the United States, after the Vatican reached out to her several weeks ago, ABC reported on Wednesday.

"It was really very humbling to even think that he would want to, you know, meet me or know me," Davis told ABC. "I put my hand out, and he grabbed it, and I hugged him, and he hugged me and he said, 'Thank you for your courage.'"

"He told me before he left, he said, 'Stay strong.' That was a great encouragement," Davis said.

Davis said knowing that the pope agreed with what she was doing "kind of validates everything."

ABC said the pope gave Davis a rosary, which she plans to give to her Catholic parents.

Mat Staver, attorney and founder of the Liberty Counsel, told CBS News that the pope met Davis and her husband at the Vatican embassy in Washington last Thursday.

Vatican chief spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said he would neither confirm nor deny the report and that there would be no further statement. This was unusual for the Vatican, which normally issues either denials or confirmations.

The report of the meeting came after Francis largely avoided the contentious issue of same-sex marriage during his historic visit to the United States, where he addressed Congress, met with the homeless and urged the country to welcome immigrants.

The pope, speaking to reporters as he returned home from his 10-day trip to the U.S. and Cuba on Monday, said government officials had a "human right" to refuse to discharge a duty if they felt it violated their conscience.

Staver, whose client was jailed for five days in September for refusing to comply with a judge's order to issue the licenses in line with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, told CBS his team did not want to disclose the meeting until now to avoid interfering with the pope's broader message during his visit.

"Because we didn't want the pope's visit to be overshadowed with Kim Davis," Staver said in an interview on the network.

During the meeting, the pope told Davis to "stay strong", Staver said.

Davis has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Her church belongs to a Protestant movement known as Apostolic Pentecostalism.

To keep a low profile, Davis went to the Vatican embassy in a sports utility vehicle with her hair in a different style than her normal look, Staver told CBS, adding he was not present.

Conservative Christians, including some Republican presidential candidates, have said Davis is standing up for religious freedom.

But the American Civil Liberties Union, which went to court to ensure same-sex couples can obtain marriage licenses in Rowan County, has argued she has a responsibility as an official to issue the licenses, regardless of her views.

The ACLU, in papers filed on Sept. 21 with the judge hearing the case, asked the court to require Davis to stop making alterations to the licenses, such as removing any reference to the Rowan County clerk's office.  — Reuters

Google unveils two Nexus smartphones

Google Inc unveiled its new Nexus smartphones on Tuesday in its latest attempt to take a bite out of Apple's dominating share of the smartphone market.

The launch of the phones, the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, comes a day after Apple Inc reported record first-weekend sales of its new iPhones.

The Nexus 5X 16 GB model will be priced at $379, while the Nexus 6P 32 GB will cost $499, Google said at an event live-streamed on YouTube.

Google also unveiled its first tablet based on the Android operating system.

The latest version of Android, dubbed Marshmallow, will roll out to existing Nexus customers from next week. Features include Doze, which puts a phone into sleep mode when it's not being used, helping to save battery life.

The Android mobile platform is a key element in Google's strategy to maintain revenue from online advertising as people switch from Web browser searches to smartphone apps.

The Nexus 5X is made by South Korea's LG Electronics Inc and the Nexus 6P by China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. Both phones feature Google's new fingerprint sensor, Nexus Imprint, which is located on the back.

The fingerprint sensors will help quickly authorize purchases made through Android Pay, the one-touch payment app on Android devices.

Android Pay will compete with Apple Pay in the mobile payments market, which research firm IDC estimates to be worth $1 trillion by 2017.

The phones are available for pre-order on the Google Store from a number of countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.

The Pixel C tablet will cost $499 for the 32 GB model and can be bought with a detachable keyboard, which will cost $149.

The tablet will be available in time for the holiday shopping season on the Google Store.

The Pixel tablet puts Google squarely in the sights of its biggest competitors, Apple's iPad Pro and Microsoft Corp's Surface tablets, which also have optional keyboards.

Google also unveiled a redesigned version of its Chromecast device for streaming Web content to TVs and introduced Chromecast Audio, which plugs into speakers to stream audio over Wi-Fi. Chromecast Audio, priced at $35, works with apps including Spotify, Pandora and Google Play Music.  — Reuters

Chris Brown vows to raise awareness about domestic violence Down Under

American R&B singer Chris Brown has said he will raise awareness of domestic violence if he is granted a visa to tour Australia, after authorities indicated he could be banned from entering the country.

Brown, who was convicted of assaulting his then-partner pop star Rihanna in 2009, may be refused entry despite plans to bring his "One Hell of a Nite" tour to Australia in December.

The government confirmed on Sunday, just a day before tickets were due to go on sale, that he had been issued with a "notice of intention to consider refusal."

"People to whom these notices are issued have 28 days to present material as to why they should be given a visa to enter Australia," Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said Sunday.

Now Brown has taken to social media to say he could help shed light on domestic violence if he is allowed entry.

"I would be more than grateful to come to Australia to raise awareness about domestic violence," he tweeted late Tuesday.

Im not the pink elephant in the room anymore."

Brown's clean image crumbled in June 2009 after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna while they were driving to a pre-Grammy Awards party.

The Grammy award-winning performer was sentenced to five years' probation -- now lifted -- a year-long domestic violence programme and 180 days of community labor.

"My life mistakes should be a wake up call for everyone," he said. "Showing the world that mistakes don't define you.

"The youth don't listen to parents nor do they listen to PSAs (Public Service Announcements). The power that we have as Entertainers can change lives."

Brown has visited Australia twice since 2009 but newly appointed Minister for Women Michaelia Cash last week suggested he may be banned this time amid heightened awareness about family violence.

Activist group GetUp! has also questioned whether Brown's tour should go ahead, saying it would send the wrong message about violence against women.

Brown is due to perform in the Australian cities of Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane from December 9-16. — Agence France-Presse

Donald Trump is the only man to save the world, says Carl Icahn

The Wall Street veteran said the property mogul’s strong sense of self was a positive for high office because he wouldn’t be threatened by having smart people, such as Icahn, giving him advice.

“His ego permits him to — where a lot of these other presidents don’t — surround himself with really good people, not just me but others,” Icahn said in an interview with Reuters.

“He needs as many good people as he can get in this environment today. We certainly don’t see that in many of these presidents.”

Trump has said in interviews and speeches that if elected, he would love to name Icahn as Treasury Secretary.

The father of 2 said he’s flattered to be considered for the position but he does not get up early enough in the morning to accept the opportunity. Asked if he’d take on a top economic advisory role, Icahn said: “We never talked about that.”

Icahn made his fortune in the 1980s buying stakes in poorly-performing companies and battling management to turn them around. Currently he is making billion dollar bets on a rebound in energy and commodities.

Like Trump, who also grew up in the New York neighbourhood of Queens, Icahn revels in anti-corporate rhetoric.

In a video entitled “Danger Ahead” released on Tuesday, the 79-year old criticizes Wall Street and the Federal Reserve for what he says is a bubble in the corporate bond market and the super-rich for not paying enough taxes.

“Most of these rich guys — many of them — haven’t done very much,” Icahn said. “People on Wall Street, I know them, they are good friends of mine.”

“But not having to pay full taxes on money that you are earning is an absurdity,” he said, pointing to private equity and hedge fund managers who benefit from the so-called “carried interest” loophole under which their earnings are taxed as capital gains rather than ordinary wage income.

In one section of the video, which includes a clip from the mafia movie “Goodfellas,” Icahn attacks Wall Street for pushing riskier junk bonds on Americans.

“Wall Street does what Wall Street does best, it sells securities,” Icahn said. “I used to laugh with some of these guys who sell these bonds. I used to say, ‘You know, the Mafia has a better code of ethics than you guys.’ You know you keep selling this crap, and you keep selling it.”

‘THE COUNTRY IS BURNING’

Icahn also criticized U.S. companies for parking profits abroad through takeovers and complicated tax structures.

“If we don’t really allow these companies to bring the money back that they are making there (overseas), they are just going to move out of this country,” Icahn said by phone.

“It’s gonna happen more quickly than they think. While Congress is sort of fiddling around, this thing is being done. The country is burning and they’re fiddling.”

Icahn’s video came out a day after Trump, currently the Republican presidential front-runner, unveiled sweeping proposals to simplify the tax code, slash the corporate tax rate and impose a one-time levy on the overseas earnings of U.S. companies.

Trump’s plan on taxing overseas profits resembles proposals put forward by President Barack Obama and two senior senators, Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio.

But Icahn said Trump was the only candidate for the 2016 presidential race who really understands the problems.

“I think he definitely wants to prove that he can turn America around,” said Icahn. “I want to see a businessman who understands we have massive problems.”  — Reuters

NASA scientists answer questions about alien life and water on Mars

To mark the discovery of liquid water on Mars, scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on reddit where they answered questions from the public.

Just a leaky faucet's worth of water

Just how much water are we talking about here? According to the scientists, it’s just a small amount—comparable to the amount that drips from your faucet if you don’t close it tightly. “We think this is a very small amount of water—maybe just enough to wet the top layer of the surface of Mars,” they said. “Think of this as a ‘seep’ not a flow.”

At present, NASA’s rovers can’t approach the regions where they suspect water is present because they’re considered “special regions.” To enter the area, extra precautions are required to prevent contamination by Earth life.

Preventing contamination by Earth life

Scientists are keenly aware of the possibility of microscopic alien life, and are very careful to make sure that Earth life doesn't contaminate and overrun the potentially fragile Martian ecosystem.

For one thing, rovers need additional sterilization before they can come closer. Scientists also take samples of microbes on the spacecraft before launch for comparison with any future discoveries.

Other Mars-related projects NASA has in mind are InSight in 2016—a lander designed to detect Mars-quakes—and a rover in 2020.

The AMA took place from 2-3 p.m. ET (2-3 a.m. Tuesday in the Philippines). Scientists who participated were Rich Zurek, Chief Scientist of NASA’s Mars Program Office and Project Scientist at the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter project; Leslie K. Tamppari, Deputy Project Scientist, MRO; Stephanie L. Smith, NASA-JPL social media team; and Sasha E. Samonchina, NASA-JPL social media team. — TJD, GMA News

Audi says 2.1M cars affected by diesel emission scandal

BERLIN - Audi said 2.1 million cars worldwide were fitted with the software that allowed parent Volkswagen to cheat US emission tests.

Some 1.42 million Audi vehicles with so-called EU5 engines are affected in Western Europe, with 577,000 in Germany and almost 13,000 in the United States, a spokesman for Ingolstadt-based Audi said on Monday.

Affected model lines include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5, the spokesman said.

VW said last week around 11 million cars of its group brands worldwide are affected by the diesel emissions scandal. — Reuters

Australia set to refuse visa for US singer Chris Brown

SYDNEY - Australia intends to refuse a visa for US singer and hip-hop star Chris Brown, a government spokesman said on Sunday, following through on a threat made last week over the singer's history of domestic violence.

Brown, 26, had been due to perform at a series of concerts in four Australian cities in December.

A spokesman for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said a notice had been sent to the singer indicating the government intends to consider refusal and he had four weeks to respond.

"People to whom these notices are issued have 28 days to present material as to why they should be given a visa to enter Australia," the spokesman said in a statement.

A final decision on whether to issue the visa would be made after considering any material presented on the singer's behalf, the spokesman said.

In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting his then girlfriend, singer Rihanna, and was sentenced in the United States to five years probation, which was lifted in February.

He has been denied entry by Britain and Canada since his conviction.

Australian Minister for Women Michaelia Cash last week urged Dutton to consider refusing Brown entry.

Neighboring New Zealand has already ruled Brown ineligible for entry as a result of Britain refusing him admission, casting doubt over the Antipodean leg of his world tour.

The Australian government last week earmarked A$100 million ($70.2 million) to combat domestic violence. — Reuters

Feted in China, Xi’s US profile dims in shadow of Pope Francis

BEIJING/WASHINGTON - On Friday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoyed the symbolic high point of his first state visit to the United States—a 21-gun salute as he stood with President Barack Obama outside the White House.

For most Americans, it was a sideshow: the main news networks were deep into their fourth straight day of blanket coverage of Pope Francis' historic US visit.

Xi's US trip has—at least in terms of US media coverage—been firmly overshadowed by the wildly popular pontiff, raising questions over its timing and contrasting sharply with the wall-to-wall coverage of Xi by Chinese media.

China's tightly controlled state media has focused heavily on the pomp, ceremony and shows of respect Xi has been treated to in Seattle and then Washington.

The adoring domestic coverage is important for Xi, who is grappling with Chinese market instability and a flagging economy at a time when he is seeking to consolidate his grip on the leadership ahead of a crucial Communist Party congress in 2017.

On a visit to a high school in Tacoma, near Seattle, where Xi and his singer wife Peng Liyuan were serenaded by the school choir, state television showed children screaming their appreciation. A day earlier, Xi had quoted Martin Luther King and sprinkled references to US pop culture into his speech to tech executives.

China has also stressed Xi's personal connection to the United States, with the Xinhua news agency carrying a video on its Facebook page—not mentioning that Facebook is blocked in China—showing him putting on a friendly face for Americans.

"From Iowa visitor to White House guest," the English-language video explains, referring to a brief 1985 visit when Xi was an animal-feed official in Hebei, Iowa's sister province.

The pope's visit to the United States, by contrast, has barely featured in the Chinese media. The Vatican has had no formal diplomatic ties to Beijing since shortly after the Communist Party took power in 1949.

Francis, the most socially progressive pope in generations, has drawn large crowds and the kind of welcome normally reserved for rock stars during his first US visit, which ends in Philadelphia on Sunday. US live news networks have hung on his every word and step.

One-sided media battle

Talk of the pope dwarfed any attention given Xi's visit, according to data provided by MediaMiser, which tracks news and media content online, on television and radio.

From Aug. 26 to Sept. 25, tweets in the United States about Francis topped 765,000, compared to 107,000 for Xi, according to MediaMiser. Online articles from Sept. 20-24 mentioned the pope nearly four times more than Xi. On television, the pope was mentioned over 25 times more.

Francis flew out of Washington, heading to a rapturous reception in New York and a star turn at the United Nations General Assembly, just as Xi was arriving.

Under Xi, US-Chinese relations are at a low, hurt by tensions over cyber theft and China's assertive moves in Asian maritime disputes.

"To be contrasted with someone who has no military, no economic might and be completely eclipsed, I think it's astounding. I don't think the Chinese are noticing the contrast in messages," said Jorge Guajardo, the former Mexican ambassador to China from 2007 to 2013 who lives in Washington.

Chinese officials played down any suggestion that the pope's visit had eclipsed Xi.

"The pope's visit, we noticed that and that ... he is welcomed by the public. His visit has his own bearing here. President Xi's visit has its own bearing," said Chinese delegation spokesman Lu Kang.

Xi slid further down the US news agenda on Friday morning, when Republican House of Representative Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation. The big networks quickly cut off Xi speaking at a news conference with Obama to follow a briefing by Boehner.

Chinese officials have kept security around Xi's visit particularly tight, limiting his ability to go off script and interact with the public. He left his wife Peng to fill that role in Washington, where she accompanied First Lady Michelle Obama to name a new-born panda at the Smithsonian National Zoo.

Officials in Tacoma said the security preparations had been gruelling.

"We met with advance teams six or eight times over the summer," Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland said of Xi's visit to the high school.

Ming Xia, a political science professor at New York's City University who travelled to take part in an anti-Xi protest outside the White House, said the pope's humility during his visit had highlighted what he called Xi's arrogance.

"The pope was praying with the homeless and said we are all equal in the eyes of God, the real father. Xi thinks he's the father of the Chinese people—he has assumed the power of God." — Reuters

Facebook founder calls for universal Internet to help cure global ills

UNITED NATIONS - Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and a host of celebrities kicked off a campaign on Saturday to make Internet access universal, saying this was critical to fulfilling the United Nations' newly adopted agenda to combat global ills.

Calling for efforts to ensure Internet access for everyone globally by 2020, Zuckerberg said Internet connections are a dynamic tool for sharing knowledge, creating opportunities, lifting communities out of poverty and promoting peace.

"A 'like' or a post won't stop a tank or a bullet, but when people are connected, we have a chance to build a common global community with a shared understanding," Zuckerberg told at a private luncheon with business leaders at the United Nations.

"That's a powerful force."

The 193 UN member nations on Friday formally adopted a sweeping set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, that aim to end poverty and combat inequality and climate change over the next 15 years and call for shared peace and prosperity.

The objectives, described as "a to-do list for people and planet" by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, are intended as a roadmap to be implemented by government and the private sector.

The connectivity campaign calls on governments, businesses and innovators to bring the Internet to the some 4 billion people who now do not have access, organizers said.

Signing on to the connectivity campaign were U2 star Bono, co-founder of One, a group that fights extreme poverty; actress Charlize Theron, founder of Africa Outreach Project; philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates; British entrepreneur Richard Branson; Huffington Post editor Arianna Huffington; Colombian singer Shakira, actor and activist George Takei and Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales. — Reuters

Dearest Lola Nidora: An open letter about Yaya Dub's OOTD

Dearest Lola Nidora,

Let me start by saying that I have come to appreciate you and the kalyeserye. I may not be a die-hard fan, as I don't get to see you every day, but as a young journalist who's emotionally-attached to my phone, I am aware of the phenomenon. And whenever time permits, I tune in for the laughs and the story.

What I like most about your segment is the boundaries you set for Yaya Dub and Alden, your emphasis on courtship, love, and the beauty of waiting. These are old-school values often forgotten by our generation. With the piles of broken hearts, quick relationships, and too many labels, your reminders ought to be heard.

But with due respect, there's something I would like to point out to you, too.

I happened to catch your episode today, when Alden was going to pay his first visit to your mansion. I was ecstatic, along with the many, many fans, because you finally allowed him to see Yaya Dub there.

You were hands-on with the preparations, and that included Yaya Dub's outfit of the day (OOTD), of course. There was a point when your sisters, Tinidora and Tidora, pointed out that you might make Yaya wear something that would make her "balot na balot."

In response, you said that was only proper. You asked your sisters, "Nakakita na ba kayo ng balot na balot na sinutsutan?"

There was a slight, awkward pause. Then Tidora replied, "Meron."

I don't know if you heard her, because I switched channels for a moment. But here's something you need to know.

I, along with female officemates and friends my age, go to work dressed appropriately. You may think we are a generation of short shorts and mini-skirts, but students and young professionals abide by dress codes, too. I, for one, usually go to work in jeans and plain shirts or blouses.

Regardless of what we wear, many of us have received catcalls from random men on the streets. One day, it could be an all-too-friendly neighbor, a tricycle driver down the block, a pahinante in a passing truck, a vendor pushing a cart of fruits. Sometimes, men dressed for office work do this too while we're waiting at jeepney, bus, or FX stops.

They make us bow our heads when we walk, if only to avoid their gaze. They ruin our day with a loaded "Good morning" or "Hi, miss." It doesn't matter if we're clothed literally from neck to ankle or if we're in pretty little dresses or shorts and crop tops. It happens.

This, perhaps, is also part of old-school mentality. Unfortunately, this one has lingered -- a deeply-rooted problem that sometimes seems to be beyond fixing.

But maybe it can still be fixed, and maybe you can help, Lola. Perhaps, instead of simply asking Yaya not to wear shorts, or whatever else that reveal more skin, maybe you can also talk to Alden.

He seems to be a sweet young man, so maybe through Alden, you can remind everyone that guys need to respect girls regardless of what they feel like wearing for the day.

Maybe you can remind him that catcalling is not a form of admiration, but of disrespect.

Maybe you can remind him that respect is just as important as his affection for Yaya Dub. That his love, as he tries to prove it to her -- and to you -- must come with this.

And here's hoping many others will hear you, too.

Love,

Aica

Apple lists top 25 apps hit by malware

Apple Inc said the WeChat messaging app and car-hailing app DiDi Taxi were among the 25 most popular apps found to be infected with malicious software.

Apple had previously not disclosed which apps had been affected, although many had been identified by third parties.

The company said on Sunday it was cleaning up its App Store, after several cyber security firms reported a malicious program, dubbed XcodeGhost, that had been embedded in hundreds, possibly thousands, of apps.

Apple said it was working with developers to get the apps back on the App Store and was blocking new apps that contained the malware.

"We have no information to suggest that the malware has been used to do anything malicious," Apple said in its XcodeGhost Q&A Web page.

Other impacted apps include Baidu Inc's Baidu Music app, the 58 Classified-Job, Used Cars, Rent, and a music app from Internet portal NetEase Inc.

Tencent Holdings Ltd is the owner of WeChat.

The company also said some of the affected apps could be fixed through updates.

The hackers targeted the App Store using a counterfeit version of Xcode "toolkit", Apple's app-building software.  — Reuters

PSEi down nearly 1.5% on China PMI

A lower manufacturing index reported by China sparked a new round of sell-off on the Philippine Stock Exchange Wednesday, with the PSEi losing nearly 1.5 percent when the morning session closed.

The main PSEi lost 99.07 points or 1.41 percent at 6,952.16. The broader All Shares dropped 43.79 points or 1.09 percent to 3,989.77.

“It’s more of the global concerns,” Juan Rafael Supangco, head of research at Angping & Associates Securities Inc. said in a phone interview.

Markets were affected by the drop in China’s manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) which declined to 47.0 in September, the lowest since 2009.

Supangco noted the Philippine market is expected trade on a weak note throughout the session. – VS, GMA News

How #AlDub exploded across the Twitterverse

It looks like an explosion, and in some ways it really is: the above video clearly shows the wildfire spread of #AlDub tweets across the Philippines.

The past few weeks have really seen a veritable explosion of posts on Facebook walls and Twitter feeds on #AlDub, the “accidental” segment on Eat Bulaga that has had a phenomenal following for some time now.

Some Trends

In the plots below, we count the number of tweets recorded for each of the terms for every hour of everyday for the entire month of August.

In the first plot, we only look at the tweets with the patterns “eatbulaga” and “showtime” in them. Eat Bulaga and It’s Showtime are two primetime shows of the two maor rival TV networks. From the plot, we can see that there are more tweets associated with “showtime” (“ItsShowTime“) than “eatbulaga”. This has been the trend on Twitter for quite some time now.

(Note that it is highly likely that this distribution of “televiewers” is skewed, i.e. Viewers are not necessarily the same as Twitter users)

Then the #AlDub phenomenon happened. The way people have received this 30-minute Eat Bulaga segment makes it more like a TV program in itself. Look at the trends below. The graph is the same as the plot above, but this time, we added the “AlDub” curve (blue).

The difference is stark! #AlDub single-handedly stole the show, blowing competition clear out of the water.

The huge spike in the number of recorded tweets is especially interesting. What happened on 22 August 2015? Googling “aldub august 22 2015” hints to the episode titled “The Wedding of Frankie and Yaya Dub”. This was also the day when the hashtag #ALDUBAgainstALLODDS trended worldwide.

Word Cloud

This is in fact captured in the word cloud below, which shows the most common words in the collection of tweets on “AlDub”.

Geotagged Tweets

This brings us back to the video at the beginning of this article: we can further filter the tweets into those that have geotagging, i.e. the tweets that have associated locations with them. This, of course, limits the data points in the set since not all Twitter users in the Philippines have activated their location trackers. Be that as it may, the video shows a CartoDB visualization of the tagged tweets as they are being tweeted across the Philippines.

One Direction announces album after split speculation

NEW YORK, United States - One Direction on Tuesday announced a new album for later this year, putting to rest speculation of an imminent breakup following the departure of Zayn Malik.

The British boy band said that "Made in the A.M." would come out on November 13. The album is the fifth by the pop sensations, with one released every year since 2011, always in November -- in time for the holiday shopping season.

The four remaining members of the band made the announcement in a short video posted on Twitter. Band member Harry Styles promised an "instant treat" of one song, entitled "Infinity," available for download to fans who pre-order the album.

The album marks a new "direction" for the band in one sense -- it will be the first without Malik, a founding member who split in March.

Malik's departure led to surprisingly bitter exchanges on social media among the former bandmates who until then had carefully maintained a squeaky-clean public image.

In another break from the youthful past, member Louis Tomlinson, 23, recently confirmed that he is going to be a father with a Los Angeles stylist.

The personal changes led to speculation that One Direction was finished, especially given the notoriously short shelf-life of boy bands.

Member Niall Horan denied the rumors on Twitter last month, writing: "We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well-earned break at some point next year."

Amid the tumult, the band has been on tour for most of the year, starting in February in Australia. The tour is scheduled to conclude on October 30 in Sheffield, England.

One Direction released its first track without Malik last month -- "Drag Me Down," which quickly went to the top of singles charts.

One Direction stormed onto the scene in 2010 when the then-teenagers appeared on the British talent show "The X Factor."

The band has since sold more than 65 million albums, according to its label. — Agence France-Presse

Purchasing Or Refinancing A Home? How to Play it Safe

When it comes to purchasing or refinancing a home, you want to play it safe because mortgage fraud is something you definitely don’t want to get caught up in.

Mortgage fraud takes places when a person intentionally provides erroneous data on a loan application in a bid to get a mortgage that he or she probably would not have qualified for had he or she entered accurate information on the loan application. You need to be aware of this sort of crime so that you don’t fall prey to con artists.

What is Mortgage Fraud?

Various sorts of mortgage fraud exists. One very popular one involves a criminal finding an unsuspecting person with good credit to serve as a so-called straw buyer. As part of this scheme, the crook will seek to have the straw buyer place his or her name on the home mortgage form. The con artist may, in exchange for the straw buyer’s assistance, promise to pay a sum of money or offer some other incentive.

Although the promised payday may prove alluring to the straw buyer, the truth of the matter is that the straw buyer will be the one left to shoulder responsibility should the mortgage default. If it’s proven that the straw buyer understood that he or she will fully engaged in fraudulent activity, he or she could be forced to cover any post-property sale shortfall, and could also be dealt criminal charges.

How Can You Remain Safe From Mortgage Fraud?

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to steer clear of mortgage fraud. For example, you should refuse to accept any payment or reward offered to place your name on a mortgage application unless you plan to buy the property in question.

Another tip is to work only with real estate agents and other industry professionals. You also need to, among other things, keep your personal information private. Nefarious people who have access to your personal information can potentially use ID theft in order to commit mortgage fraud — without your knowledge.

Don’t fall victim to mortgage fraud. When purchasing or refinancing a home, be sure to go through the proper channels to get your business taken care of properly. If you work with industry professionals, steer clear of too-good-to-be-true offers from potential con artists and guard your personal information. This way you’ll be able to safely purchase or refinance your home.

Hurdles Towards Getting The Best Mortgage Rate

Even if you try hard to get the most attractive rate and term for a mortgage, you still might only end up with the most favorable option available for someone in your situation rather than with the best option available in the marketplace.

In fact, depending on various factors, the difference between your rate and a superior rate could be numerous percentage points.

Since even a single percentage point difference can make a difference over the long haul, it’s in your best interests to learn about the obstacles to getting the best mortgage rates. Read on for some tips that will help you get ahead.

Low Credit Score

If your credit score is south of 680, you’ll fall short of the threshold needed to secure the best interest rates available. It’ll be even worse if, in addition to a low credit score, you also lack the ability to come up with a substantial down payment. Having good credit though, won’t be enough. You’ll also need to demonstrate a 24-month period of good credit with zero major delinquencies.

Duration of Rate Hold

Since the general rule of thumb is that the lowest interest rates tend to be available for so-called quick closes, you will only be able to benefit from this general policy if you hold a rate for less than a month.

Modest Salary

When it comes to getting the best rates, your income will be a factor. If you’re your own boss or cannot easily provide proof of stable income over a number of years, you may very well miss out of the most attractive rates. In addition, some lenders will insist that you table a larger down payment.

Higher Risk Properties

Another factor that can impact your rate is the nature of the property you are interested in purchasing. For example, there are lenders that will assess higher rates for condo units, cottages, and big multi-unit residences since these sorts of living spaces are viewed by some lenders as higher risk, non-standard properties.

All in all, it is very much possible to get a compelling mortgage rate if you’re willing to do a bit of searching, but as you’ve seen from the aforementioned points, there are some hurdles towards getting the best mortgage rates. Consider the aforementioned points and compare them to your own situation to ascertain whether or not you’re likely to qualify for the best rates.

Television’s annual Emmys show opens

LOS ANGELES - The annual Emmy Awards show got under way in Los Angeles on Sunday, with "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones" among the many shows vying for glory, and many records possible on several fronts.

Hollywood's A-list—from "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm to Lady Gaga, who will star in the upcoming "American Horror Story: Hotel—strutted down the red carpet in scorching heat, with several blotting the sweat off their faces.

Host Andy Samberg kicked off the 67th Emmys with a musical video skit about the wealth of quality television now on offer, featuring several other stars like Hamm and Kerry Washington, the star of "Scandal."

Samberg—the star of Fox's sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and a former cast member of US comedy show "Saturday Night Live"—then hailed this year's show for recognizing diversity.

"This is the most diverse group of nominees in Emmy history," he said, adding: "So congratulations Hollywood, you did it. Yeah, racism is over."

The biggest suspense at this year's three-hour ceremony is whether Hamm will finally go home with a statuette for best actor in a drama.

Industry watchers predict Hamm—whose portrayal of the dashing but troubled Draper has defined AMC's classic show about the advertising industry in 1960s New York and earned him eight nomination—will take home the trophy.

This year's ceremony could  be the first time a black actress wins in the top drama category.

Viola Davis is vying for best lead actress in a drama for ABC's "How to Get Away with Murder" and Taraji P. Henson for Fox's music melodrama "Empire."

"Cookie represents the American dream," said Henson, as she arrived for the ceremony in a sleek black Alexander Wang dress, referring to her character in the series. "She came from nothing and built an empire." —Agence France-Presse

Dividend payers get a break from Fed decision

NEW YORK - The Federal Reserve's decision not to hike interest rates may have brought renewed volatility and a stock market selloff, but it also carved out breathing room for a couple of sectors: dividend payers and housing stocks.

With 10-year Treasuries now yielding around 2.14 percent, the 2.2 percent dividend yield of the overall S&P 500 should appeal to income-hungry investors who are convinced interest rates will stay low for a while.

Some sectors' yields are much higher. Telecommunication services companies are yielding 5.35 percent, for example.

Utilities and real estate investment trusts (REITs) have gained ground since the Fed announced its decision. The S&P utility index, though down slightly on Friday, was the best-performing sector since the Fed announcement.

"We could be in a lower-for-longer environment, and ... some of the stocks that have yield components, whether it's REITs or utilities and other dividend stocks that have sold off, maybe those will eventually find a footing here and get some flow," said Stephen Gutch, senior portfolio manager at Federated Investors in Rochester, New York.

"They're fairly valued for a higher-rate environment, so I think they're attractive right now."

Since they compete with bonds, big dividend-paying stocks have benefited in recent years from the ultra-low interest rate environment, with the S&P utility index registering a 24.3 percent gain in 2014, the best of any S&P sector.

But this year, utilities have retreated as Treasury yields rose on the prospect of a Fed rate hike. With the Fed now holding off, the sector may fall back into favor.

"When I look at utilities that are yielding in the 4-percent range, I think they're priced for what I'd call a normal 10-year Treasury yield - call it 4 or 5 percent - because with utilities you're still going to get some earnings growth," said Josh Peters, director of equity income strategy at Morningstar. "I'd have a similar take on REITs."

Although dividend payers provide a certain measure of protection in volatile markets, they are by no means sheltered from the market's ups and downs. Volatility most likely will stick around, analysts say, as investors reassess the prospects for interest rates and global economic growth.

"We believe we have moved from a market where one should simply buy the dips, to one in which one ought to also sell rallies," Peter Cecchini, chief market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald in New York, wrote in a research note.

Another area of the market that could benefit from the low-for-longer rate environment is the housing sector, with prospects of continuing low rates helping mortgage seekers.

As the jobs market and income growth improve, demand for housing should rise as well, Fed Chair Janet Yellen said on Thursday.

Housing shares have outperformed the broader market this year, with the PHLX housing index up 10.9 percent, compared with the S&P 500's decline of 4.5 percent.

Next week, reports on existing and new home sales could move stocks like Lennar or PulteGroup. — Reuters

Pinterest claims 100 million users

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - More than 100 million users are on Pinterest, the online bulletin board-style service which allows people to "pin" images based on their interests, the California company said Wednesday.

Co-founder Evan Sharp told AFP that most of the users "are not just visiting Pinterest once a month, but they're actually discovering something so interesting that they're saving it or are clicking through to the website."

"It's 100 million active users, more than 70 percent of whom are actively engaged," he said in a telephone interview.

The disclosure from Pinterest is the first time since its launch in March 2010 that it has discussed the number of users.

Sharp said that the majority of Pinterest users are women but noted the gender gap "is closing a little bit every month."

Based on the latest figures, Pinterest remains well behind Facebook-owned app Instagram, also a photo-sharing service, which claims some 300 million users.

But Sharp said the two platforms serve different needs and different audiences.

"Instagram is more of a social service at the end of the day," he said.

"It's more similar to a social network," while Pinterest "is much more like a search engine," he said.

"On Pinterest, you search for something, you find a great outfit, you can buy that outfit. (The two platforms) serve very different purposes."

Pinterest has taken pains to avoid being labeled a social network. Earlier this year, co-founder and chief executive Ben Silbermann described Pinterest as a "catalog of ideas" to help people discover and try new things in their lives.

The number of Pinterest queries is now estimated to be more than 1.5 billion per month, according to the company, which is seeing its strongest growth globally, with some 45 percent of users outside the US market.

"Right now the focus of the company is growing around the world, outside of the United States," he said.

"We're focusing on local content: if you find a recipe in France it should be a French recipe probably, not always but usually, or something saved by somebody in France."

Pinterest, whose valuation has jumped to $11 billion, employs 500 people and has recently opened offices in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. — Agence France-Presse

Oil prices weak on economic concerns, OPEC target on market share

SINGAPORE – Oil markets were weak on Friday as fresh signs that OPEC will continue to value market share over prices outweighed expectations of a lift when the United States kept interest rates at historic lows.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were trading at $46.74 per barrel at 0535 GMT, down 16 cents from their last settlement. Brent prices were at $49.12 per barrel, up 4 cents.

Kuwait, a key producer of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), said on Thursday the oil market would balance itself but that this would take time, indicating support for the group's policy of defending market share despite falling prices.

Other sources at OPEC backed this view saying they expected oil prices to rise by no more than $5 a barrel a year to reach $80 by 2020, with a slowing in rival non-OPEC production growth not enough to absorb the current oil glut.

Oil prices were largely steady, though at low levels, during Asian trading hours despite the U.S. Fed keeping interest rates unchanged on worries over the health of the global economy.

Analysts had suggested a weaker greenback – a usual result of low interest rates – would support oil, as it makes dollar-traded crude cheaper for countries using other currencies.

Yet because the Fed's decision was based on economic concerns, some analysts and traders had a different view.

"Shockingly, one (Fed) official thinks rates need to be cut, and not raised, before the end of 2015. This puts into serious question if there will be any rate raise at all before the end of this year," said Howie Lee of Singapore-based brokerage Phillip Futures.

"The sluggish economy is bound to weigh one way or another," he added.

Also, US lawmakers may be only months away from lifting a four-decade-old ban on most oil exports, although the outlook for oil prices in 2016 and beyond suggests it may be years before traders care.

Front-month WTI crude futures have strengthened this week to their firmest versus Brent since the early days of the US shale oil boom, knocking off 70 percent of their discount to the global benchmark to around $2 per barrel. – Reuters

Powerful quake off Chile slams waves into coastal towns; eight killed

SANTIAGO - Strong aftershocks rippled through Chile on Thursday after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake that killed at least eight people and slammed powerful waves into coastal towns, forcing more than a million people from their homes.

The government ordered evacuations from coastal areas after the powerful quake hit on Wednesday evening, seeking to avoid a repeat of a quake disaster in 2010 when authorities were slow to warn of a tsunami that killed hundreds.

As the risk subsided, the government lifted its tsunami warning on Thursday morning.

The quake and heavy waves afterward caused flooding in coastal towns, damaged buildings and knocked out power in the worst hit areas of central Chile. It shook buildings in the capital city of Santiago about 280 km to the south.

The port of Coquimbo suffered major damage in the quake, which was the strongest in the world this year, Interior Minister Jorge Burgos told a news conference. The city was hit by waves of up to waves of up to 4.5 meters after the earthquake, Chile's navy said.

President Michelle Bachelet said she planned to travel to the areas worst affected by the quake, the biggest to hit the country since 2010.

"Once again we're having to deal with another harsh blow from nature," she said in a televised statement.

Chile is the world's top copper producer and operations were suspended at two big copper mines as a precaution, sending prices on the London Metal Exchange to two-month highs in early Asian trading on concern over disruptions to supplies. Prices dipped again after there were no initial reports of damage to mines after daybreak.

State copper miner Codelco said it was keeping operations at its Andina mine suspended, but it had restarted operations at its Ventanas smelter.

Both Codelco and Antofagasta, which halted operations at its Los Pelambres copper mine, said they were now carrying out inspections but they did not have any reports so far of damage. Los Pelambres is the closest major mine to the quake epicenter.

The quake was felt as far away as Buenos Aires in Argentina.

"It's been awful. We ran out of the house with our grandchildren and now we are on a hill hoping it will be over soon," said Maria Angelica Leiva from the coastal town of Navidad.

"It is all very dark, and we just hope the sea hasn't reached our house," she said.

Tsunami advisories were issued for parts of South America, Hawaii, California and French Polynesia, although waves were generally expected to be small. As far away as New Zealand, authorities warned of "unusually strong currents" and urged residents in eastern coastal areas to stay out of the water and off beaches.

Aftershocks felt

Dozens of strong aftershocks continued to rattle central Chile, a largely agricultural region south of the mining belt, on Thursday.

In the city of Illapel, near the epicenter of Wednesday's quake, a 26-year-old woman was killed by a collapsing wall. Another person died from a heart attack in Santiago, according to media reports.

Most buildings in Illapel had stayed standing, residents said. Quake-prone Chile has strict building regulations that limit potential damage, so newer buildings are able to withstand even strong quakes. Many homes in Illapel and surrounding areas are simple, adobe houses and are more prone to damage.

The brunt of the damage was borne by coastal areas such as Coquimbo where houses and fishing-boats were smashed by waves.

"We're going through a really grave situation with the tsunami. We have residential neighborhoods that have flooded. The ocean has reached the downtown area," said Coquimbo Mayor Cristian Galleguillos.

Chile is due to celebrate its national holiday on Friday, but roads were cut off and public transport canceled between Santiago and the north, local media reported.

The quake is the latest natural disaster to roil mining in Chile, which accounts for a third of global copper output. Northern Chile was hit by severe floods earlier this year, while a volcanic eruption caused problems for residents in the south.

Active quake zone

Chile runs along a highly seismic and volcanic zone where tectonic plates meet and often experiences earthquakes. In 2014, an 8.2-magnitude quake struck near the northern city of Iquique. In 2010 an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in central-southern Chile triggered a massive tsunami, and more than 500 people were killed.

In the hours after that quake, President Bachelet and other government officials misjudged the extent of damage and declined offers of international aid. That delayed the flow of assistance to disaster areas, leaving many survivors feeling they had been abandoned by the government.

Bachelet's government was also slow to prevent looting following the quake. Its failings hit her high approval ratings at the end of her presidential term, although she remained popular and was elected again in 2013. — Reuters

Nicole Kidman returns to London in tale of overlooked DNA scientist

Nicole Kidman, whose last appearance on stage in London was described by one reviewer as "pure theatrical Viagra", has captivated audiences again with her performance as the sidelined scientist who helped unlock the secret of DNA.

The Oscar-winning actor's portrait of Rosalind Franklin, who battles sexism in male-dominated 1950s Britain in Anna Ziegler's play "Photograph 51", opened to glowing reviews on Monday.

Kidman's return to the London stage had been eagerly awaited following her debut here 17 years ago in David Hare's "The Blue Room", a play about a chain of sexual encounters.

This time she is a very different character: the super-smart but prickly Rosalind Franklin, a chemist whose work in X-ray crystallography was crucial to understanding the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).

Her role in the landmark discovery of its double-helix structure never received the same recognition as Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins.

Franklin, whose X-ray image known as photograph 51 was pivotal to the breakthrough, died of ovarian cancer in 1958 at the age of 37. Ziegler's play helps move her from the margins of science history to center stage.

But it also confronts her demons, including an unwillingness to collaborate and a reluctance to entertain scientific theories, which meant she missed the significance of her own work. Her photograph provided the vital clue, but the theoreticians Crick and Watson had the imagination to solve the puzzle by building a hypothetical model of DNA.

Franklin comes across as a satisfyingly complex character, simultaneously a cold and unyielding colleague but also someone with real passion for her work who toils into the night in a basement laboratory at a bombed-out King's College London.

Kidman, 48, said she was apprehensive about returning to the stage, but the play resonated for her personally. Her father, Antony Kidman, was a biochemist who died almost exactly a year ago.

"That's very much a part of my desire to pay tribute to scientists of the world with this play," she said. "My memory as a child is science labs."

The play has been staged before in the United States, including in an off Broadway production in New York in 2010, but it is now being thrust into the limelight in the production directed by Michael Grandage, former artistic director of London's acclaimed Donmar Warehouse. -- Reuters

Mediterranean diet plus olive oil may reduce breast cancer risk

Over time, eating a Mediterranean-style diet that emphasizes fish, vegetables and particularly olive oil, may lower women’s risk of breast cancer compared to following a low-fat diet, suggests a new study from Spain.

In the five-year trial that randomly assigned women to different kinds of diets, those instructed to eat a Mediterranean-style diet with four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil per day had about half as many breast cancer diagnoses as those on a low-fat diet.

“With an overall healthy diet plus extra virgin olive oil there is a reduction in the hard endpoint of breast cancer,” said senior author Dr. Miguel A. Martinez-Gonzalez of the University of Navarra in Pamplona and CIBEROBN in Madrid.

“We have now evidence to support that olive oil is causally related to reduction in risk of breast cancer,” he said.

The fact that the findings are based on a randomized trial, the gold-standard of research, “immediately impressed” the journal editors, writes Dr. Mitchell H. Katz, deputy editor of JAMA Internal Medicine, in an editor’s note accompanying the study.

Still, the authors caution in their report, the data come from a larger long-term trial whose primary focus is heart disease. And out of more than 4,000 women included in the breast cancer study, there were only 35 cases of breast cancer, a low number of total cases for statistical analysis. This and a lack of data about cancer-screening mammograms among the women limit the results, they write.

Martinez-Gonzalez and colleagues studied breast cancer outcomes in women participating in PREDIMED, a study of the Mediterranean diet’s protective effects against cardiovascular disease and a variety of other illnesses (see Reuters Health story of May 11, 2015 here: reut.rs/1RyZALT).

Between 2003 and 2009, a total of 4,282 women ages 60 to 80 years old with a high risk of cardiovascular disease were randomly assigned to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, the same diet supplemented with nuts or to a comparison group that was told to reduce their overall dietary fat intake.

Those in the two Mediterranean diet groups were given either one liter (34 ounces) of olive oil per week or 30 grams (1 ounce) of nuts per day for free. The olive oil group was instructed to consume about 50 grams (4.2 tablespoons) per day, including in cooked foods and on salads or bread.

The women had quarterly sessions with dieticians, completing questionnaires that gauged how well they were following their assigned diet. There was no specific advice to reduce overall calorie intake or to increase physical activity.

A Mediterranean diet is a plant-based diet that replaces most desserts with fruit, limits beverage intake to mostly water or red wine, reduces dairy intake and keeps red meat consumption to once a week or less, Martinez-Gonzalez said.

Over the course of the study, there were 17 confirmed diagnoses of breast cancer in the low-fat comparison group, 10 in the Mediterranean diet with nuts group and eight in the Mediterranean diet with olive oil group, the researchers found.

There is some evidence with animal studies that extra virgin olive oil, which is rich in polyphenols, may induce programmed cell death or early cancer cells in the breast, Martinez-Gonzalez told Reuters Health.

“It is definitively important to assess with new trials the transferability of a Mediterranean diet to other countries,” he said. “Here our participants were very happy, we provided olive oil for free and gave shopping lists and written materials.”

Done correctly, the Mediterranean diet is delicious and much more enjoyable than a low-fat diet, he said.

There were no apparent negative side effects of the dietary change, he said.

“At the beginning it is tough, but little by little participants change in the right direction and they enjoy the cooking procedure,” he said.

The study had many limitations, but a Mediterranean diet is safe and does reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Katz writes. “It may also prevent breast cancer. We hope to see more emphasis on Mediterranean diet to reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease and improve health and well-being.” — Reuters

Emerging economies plea for end to US rates agony

Paris, France – Some of the world's biggest emerging economies are pleading for the United States to end their drawn-out agony and raise interest rates now.

Already hit by a commodities crash sparked by the slowing of China's once-booming economy, the mere prospect of the US Federal Reserve raising interest rates – perhaps as soon as Thursday – has battered the emerging giants that were once the world's top performers.

Lured by the promise of bigger returns when the Federal Reserve eventually begins raising interest rates, investors are already moving their money to safer, yet profitable, US destinations.

In August alone, panicky investors dumped equities held in emerging economies to the tune of $8.7 billion, according to the Institute of International Finance. The dollar, meanwhile, has climbed.

The International Monetary Fund warned this month against a "premature" increase in US interest rates as the slowdown in Chinese growth and the ensuing commodities price collapse ripples through the world economy, and emerging economies in particular.

Some key emerging economies, however, would rather bring a swift end to the painful wait.

The Fed's decision is "probably the most anticipated event in the last century," Peru central bank chief Julio Valarde told the Nikkei Asian Review on a visit to Tokyo last week.

"What is surprising is how many central bankers with whom I talk prefer the hike to come as soon as possible," Valarde said, arguing that the uncertainty of the wait was more damaging than the interest rate increase itself.

Indian central bank governor Raghuram Rajan agreed.

"It's preferable to have a move early on and an advertised, slow move up rather than the Fed be forced to tighten more significantly down the line," he told the Wall Street Journal at the Jackson Hole, Wyoming, central bankers' meeting last month.

'Uncertainty created the turmoil'

For Indonesia's central bank, too, the doubts are of the greatest concern.

"We think US monetary policymakers have got confused about what to do. The uncertainty has created the turmoil," Mirza Adityaswara, deputy governor at Indonesia's central bank, told the Financial Times.

"The situation will recover the sooner the Fed makes a decision and then gives expectation to the market that they increase one or two times and then stop," he said.

Financial markets have not forgotten the precedent of mid-2013 when then Federal Reserve governor Ben Bernanke evoked the possibility of a future increase in interest rates and sparked a flight of capital from emerging markets.

Hopes for an end to the agony may be dashed even if the Fed pulls the benchmark US federal funds rate up from zero percent, where it has been frozen since the financial crisis of 2008, analysts said.

Mixed figures on US employment and uncertainty over Chinese economic growth could prompt Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen to wait a little longer, analysts said.

Even if she acts, the speculation will live on, warned Philippe Waechter, economist at French investment bank Natixis Asset Management.

Emerging markets "think that if the US moves, the question of capital flight will be resolved and they can turn the page," he said.

"But I am not so sure."

Waechter said the Fed was unlikely to tighten in a series of small steps at every meeting. "If they raise on Thursday, then on Friday we will be asking when the next one comes." – Agence France-Presse

Asian shares edge up, brush off soft China data

TOKYO - Asian shares edged up on Monday in cautious trade, brushing off soft economic data from China, as investors looked to whether the US Federal Reserve is confident enough to raise interest rates for the first time in a decade.

US stock futures rose 0.4 percent from late US levels in early Asian trade while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.4 percent. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.3 percent.

Data published at the weekend showed growth in China's investment and factory output missed forecasts in August, raising the chances that China's third-quarter economic growth may dip below 7 percent for the first time since the global crisis.

The data add to expectations that Beijing will respond with more measures to prop up the economy.

"The numbers fit with our view that China will have to roll out more monetary easing," said Fumio Nakakubo, Japan CIO at UBS's wealth management division.

China's output of key industrial commodities including coal and steel weakened in August, as government measures to prevent smog from affecting World War Two commemorations further cut production already lowered by a slowing economy.

Slowing demand from China are likely to keep a tab on commodity prices.

Influential Wall Street trader Goldman Sachs cut its outlook on oil late last week, lowered its 2016 forecast for US crude to $45 a barrel from $57 previously, citing oversupply and concerns over China's economy.

The investment bank said crude could even fall to near $20 a barrel.

In early trade, US crude futures traded at $44.82, up 0.4 percent from last week's close after a 3.0 percent fall last week.

Still trading in most asset classes could be subdued as investors look to whether the US Fed will raise rates at its policy meeting on Sept 16-17.

"It is fair to say that the full spectrum of views is on offer. Clearly this is the most anticipated Fed meeting in a number of years," analysts at ANZ said in a report.

A small majority of forecasters are sticking to their guns and predicting the Federal Reserve will pull the trigger next week on the first US interest rate increase in nearly a decade.

Traders are pricing in smaller chance of a rate hike, however, suspecting the Fed may tread cautiously given the falls in equity markets and commodities in recent weeks.

"We think it is almost 50-50 whether the Fed will raise rates this week but we expect a rate hike by December on the grounds that the US economy is pretty strong," said UBS's Nakakubo.

In the currency market, the dollar was little changed against major currencies.

Against the yen, it traded at 120.67 yen. The euro stood little changed at $1.1342, holding on to last week's 1.8 percent gain. —Reuters

Japan’s Mount Aso volcano erupts —weather agency

Mount Aso, a volcano located on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu, erupted on Monday, Japan's Meteorological Agency said, sending up huge plumes of grey ash and smoke.

Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire"—a horseshoe-shaped band of fault lines and volcanoes around the edges of the Pacific Ocean—and is home to more than 100 active volcanoes.

Last year, Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted unexpectedly, killing 63, the worst volcanic disaster for nearly 90 years. In May, a remote island south of Kyushu was evacuated due to another eruption. —Reuters

Mayweather remains undefeated after UD win over Berto

Floyd Mayweather Jr. cemented his place among the pantheon of boxing greats with a unanimous decision over fellow American Andre Berto on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) in what he has repeatedly said would be the final fight of his career.

Mayweather, 38, outboxed his younger opponent over the 12 rounds to retain his WBC and WBA welterweight titles and improve his perfect career record to 49-0, matching the benchmark set by former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.

Five-division world champion Mayweather dominated most of the exchanges in the MGM Grand Garden Arena with his lightning jabs and agile movement about the ring to finish ahead on all three judges' scorecards.

Berto, a 30-1 underdog against one of the best defensive fighters of all time, dropped to 30-4 as he suffered his fourth loss in his last seven fights.

Back in the ring for the first time since May when he beat Manny Pacquiao in a 'mega-fight' that became the richest bout in boxing, Mayweather landed 232 of 410 punches while Berto connected with just 83 of 495.

However, it was a welterweight showdown that failed to capture the public's imagination given Berto's relatively low profile globally and his mixed run of results over the past four years, and it was low on entertainment value on the night.

Barely five hours before the start, the MGM Grand box office said "a bunch of tickets" were still available for the arena in the price range between $300 and $1,500, but many of those were snapped up by fight time. - RAF, GMA News

Mayweather farewell fizzles at box office

Hundreds of tickets were still available Friday less than 24 hours before Floyd Mayweather's welterweight world title defense, an embarrassing blow to the champion for what he says will be his last fight.

It is in stark contrast to the feverish anticipation for May's showdown with Manny Pacquiao, when all seats at the MGM Grand were snapped up in mere minutes.

Mayweather has attempted to drum up interest in Saturday's bout at the same venue in Las Vegas by declaring challenger Andre Berto -- rated by many pundits as a massive underdog -- a genuine threat.

Berto's respected trainer, Virgil Hunter, has talked up "personal issues" between the two fighters.

But it would appear that the paying public are not buying it.

The lukewarm interest from fight fans will be particularly galling for Mayweather, 38, because victory over Berto would put him equal with heavy legend Rocky Marciano with a perfect 49-0 record.

Ticketmaster was still offering several hundred tickets for between $150 and $1,500 late Friday and its website showed whole rows lying empty. —Agence France-Presse

iPad Pro is bigger, with keyboard and stylus

SAN FRANCISCO -  Apple Inc announced a bigger iPad with a new keyboard and stylus aimed at business customers.

Chief Executive Tim Cook promised a day of "monster" news on Wednesday, but shares of the company remained nearly flat as executives showed off the iPad, which will be priced starting at $799.

Cook began by talking up the Apple Watch, saying customer satisfaction for the new product was 97 percent. Apple is working with French luxury goods maker Hermes on a new watch collection, and Facebook Messenger is coming to the device, he added.

He then rolled out the "iPad Pro" with a 12.9 inch screen and said it had performance similar to a desktop computer. Apple showed off a "smart" keyboard and a stylus called "Pencil".

Apple said it had partnered with Cisco Systems Inc and IBM to help power the iPad pro, which it said is up to 1.8 times faster and has a 10-hour battery life. Many people on Twitter seemed unimpressed by the new iPad and lamented its large size, however.

Shares of Apple were up less than 1 percent at $112.68.

Cook promised "monster announcements" at the event, which is also expected to feature an updated version of its Apple TV device and of its iPhones, which drove nearly two-thirds of the company's $49.6 billion in revenue in the most recent quarter.

Apple is widely expected to keep the size of the phones the same but upgrade it with an improved camera and Force Touch, a display technology that responds differently depending on how hard users press their screens.

A year after Apple rolled out iPhones with larger screens, touching off a frenzy of sales that saw revenue in the most recent quarter increase 32.5 percent from the same quarter a year ago, the latest upgrades may leave some investors and consumers underwhelmed.

"It's getting harder and harder for Apple to compete against itself," said analyst Bob O'Donnell of TECHnalysis Research. Apple shares are up more than 14 percent over the last year, although they are down nearly 12 percent in the last three months.

Fortunately for Apple, most consumers buy smartphones under a two-year upgrade cycle, meaning the company will still likely scoop up a lot of sales, said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.

"The key point of reference is not how the new phone compares to the iPhone 6, it's how it compares to the iPhone 5s," he said.

Expectations have been rising for an revamped Apple TV, a set-top box that has seen few significant updates since its release in 2007. Although Apple has yet to hammer out deals for a long-awaited television service, analysts say the company is poised to overhaul the hockey-puck-sized device.

The device is expected to gain an App Store and an interface that allows users to make requests through the Siri digital assistant and search for specific programs and movies across apps. The company may also discuss the device's role as a hub for gaming.

"It's a big day for the big screen!" Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue tweeted before the event.

Nearly 20 percent of U.S. broadband households own at least one streaming media player, and Apple has a long way to go in the market, according to data from research firm Parks Associates.

Roku is the leader in streaming media boxes, accounting for 34 percent of all streaming devices sold in the United States in 2014, according to data from research firm Parks Associates. Google Inc's Chromecast and Amazon.com Inc's Fire TV were next. The Apple TV box came in fourth.

"It's important that (Apple) come out and really get up to date and potentially eclipse some of the other living room devices out there," Moorhead said.  — Reuters
