US Vice President Biden’s son Beau dies of brain cancer

WASHINGTON - Former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of US Vice President Joe Biden, died on Saturday after battling brain cancer, the vice president said. He was 46.

"The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words," Vice President Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

"We know that Beau's spirit will live on in all of us, especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter," he said.

Beau Biden had announced last year he planned to run for governor of Delaware in 2016.

He was diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2013 and underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. After getting a "a clean bill of health" in November of that year, his cancer recurred in the spring of 2015, the vice president's office said.

He sought aggressive treatment and had been hospitalized this month at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center outside Washington. His family was with him when he died.

"Beau embodied my father's saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did," the vice president said. "In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known."

Beau Biden was very close to his father and a familiar presence in his political campaigns.

After eight years as attorney general in Delaware, Beau Biden joined the investor law firm Grant & Eisenhofer in 2015.

He served a year-long tour in Iraq as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard and underwent surgery at a cancer center in Texas last year. He suffered a mild stroke in 2010.

President Barack Obama paid warm tribute to Beau Biden, saying he took after his father.

"He studied the law, like his dad, even choosing the same law school. He chased a life of public service, like his dad, serving in Iraq and as Delaware's Attorney General," Obama said in a statement.

"Like his dad, Beau was a good, big-hearted, devoutly Catholic and deeply faithful man, who made a difference in the lives of all he touched, and he lives on in their hearts."

The vice president has faced family tragedy before.

Shortly after winning election to the US Senate in 1972, his wife Neilia and three children were in a car crash. Neilia and their daughter were killed, while their two sons, Beau and Hunter, were injured.

Biden opted not to move to Washington, choosing instead to make the 2 1/2-hour daily round-trip train commute from Delaware to his Senate job so he could spend more time with his sons. He married Jill Jacobs some five years after his first wife died.

Biden took office as vice president when Obama entered the White House in January 2009. He has a deep knowledge of Washington politics after decades in Congress and a folksy, avuncular style that contrasts with what many consider Obama's more aloof manner.

Biden has not publicly ruled out a run for president in 2016, but he would face tough odds to gain an advantage over his friend, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is far ahead in public opinion polls in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. — Reuters

Ex-NFL star Sharper pleads guilty in New Orleans to drugging women

Former NFL player Darren Sharper, accused of drugging and raping women in four states, pleaded guilty on Friday (Saturday, PHL time) to related federal charges in New Orleans, prosecutors said.

Sharper, 39, already had pleaded guilty or no contest to rape or attempted rape in Arizona, California and Nevada as part of a series of plea agreements with prosecutors that call for him to serve about nine years in federal prison.

In Louisiana, the five-time Pro Bowl National Football League safety admitted to distributing controlled substances to unsuspecting women and then having sex with them while they were incapacitated, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The three federal counts of drugging women with the intent to rape them each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Sharper is set to be sentenced on Aug. 20.

Authorities say Sharper met his female victims at various nightclubs and bars, then sexually assaulted them after taking them back to his hotel or apartment and spiking their drinks with a narcotic. He was arrested last year.

In March, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault and attempted sexual assault in Arizona and attempted sexual assault in Nevada. He pleaded no contest to two counts of rape by use of drugs and four counts of furnishing a controlled substance in California.

He was sentenced in the Arizona case to nine years in prison. The plea bargains call for his sentences to be served concurrently in federal prison.

He still has a separate pending case on state charges in New Orleans, where he was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting two women.

Sharper played 14 years in the NFL and helped lead the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl victory in 2010. He was a broadcaster for the NFL Network when the rape allegations surfaced. - Reuters

Microsoft's Cortana coming to iPhone and Android

Microsoft's personal digital assistant Cortana is coming to the iPhone as well as to devices running Google's Android platform.

In a blog post, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said a Cortana app for iPhones and Android, to serve as a companion on a Windows 10 PC.

"Part of the power of a personal assistant comes from being available on the go, on the device you carry with you everywhere. And for people who don’t have the benefit of a Windows phone, we want to extend the advantage of Cortana in Windows 10.  How will this work?  Today, we’re announcing a Cortana application for Android phones and for iPhones which works as a companion to Cortana on your Windows 10 PC," he said.

He said the phone companion app on the PC will help a user install the Cortana app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Belfiore said Cortana, which can help to things from searching on the web or a device to setting reminders, dictating email, or toggling device settings, is integrated into Edge, the new web browser for Windows 10.

"The Cortana companion app will help you complete tasks you begin on your PC wherever you are, on your phone," he said.

Limitations

But here's the catch: there may be some things Cortana can do on Windows Phones that may not work on Android devices or iPhones.

This is because some Cortana features "require access to the system that aren’t currently possible with iOS or Android," he said.

Among the things Cortana may not be able to do on iOS or Android for now include toggling settings and opening apps.

Even hands-free access to Cortana by saying “Hey Cortana” will be limited to Windows Phones for now, as the feature needs special integration with the device’s microphone.

Designed for all devices

Belfiore, in making the announcement, noted Microsoft realizes that "many people use iPhones or Android phones, and we want them to enjoy some of their Windows experience and content while away from their Windows 10 PC."

"Regardless of the operating systems you choose across your devices – everything important to you should roam across the products you already own – including your phone," he said.

Phone companion

A Phone Companion app on the PC allows a user to pick which type of phone he or she owns, whether it's a Windows phone, Android phone, or iPhone.

Nothing extra is needed with a Windows Phone, though a few steps may have to be followed for Android or iPhone owners.

OneDrive app allows photos taken on a phone to show up automatically in the Photos app of a Windows 10 PC.

Music app lets a user store and access music from OneDrive not only on the PC but now also play it anywhere, for free, on an iOS or Android phone.

"And you can work on your Office documents from any of your devices, without worrying about moving files around," Belfiore said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Proving Injuries in a St. Louis Car Accident Case

Automobile accidents are typically unexpected, causing much confusion and stress.

After a car accident, you are recovering from any injuries sustained and trying to pay the exorbitant medical bills. During this tough time, proving your injuries in a court is the last thing on your mind. However, in order to claim damages for a car accident claim, you will have to prove your damages and injuries that resulted from the car accident.

Pre-Existing Conditions

When a personal injury case goes to a judge or jury, the plaintiff is required to prove that the injuries in question were caused by the car accident and not by another event. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that has been worsened by the accident, you can claim compensation for the same. Personal injury law states that an injured person should be put back into the same position that he or she enjoyed before the accident.

Collect the Right Documents

Defendants who try to blame the injury on a pre-existing condition cannot escape from paying for damages.
The most important documents that helps in proving your injuries are your medical records. It is important to seek medical help immediately after a car accident. When you visit a doctor, your condition should be examined thoroughly and the details recorded. These records help in strengthening your case for recovering damages as the other party cannot claim that the injury was a result of some event other than the accident. If your pre-existing condition has worsened, past medical records and post-accident medical records can be compared and used to prove that the accident has aggravated the pre-existing condition.

In addition to medical records, keep a personal record of your daily activity, doctor visits, and rehabilitation sessions. Note down any difficulties that you have been facing in your day-to-day activities. This record can support your claim and help you in receiving compensation for the damages and injuries sustained.

Finding the Best Lawyer for Your Car Accident Case

If you have sustained injuries in a car accident caused by another person’s negligence, you have the right to seek compensation for your injuries and damages.

To ensure that your legal rights are protected, consult with a St. Louis car accident lawyer to represent your case. The lawyer that you hire should be experienced in litigation of car accident cases, should be able to assess the positives and negatives of your case, and be able to guide you through the compensation process.

Looking for a St. Louis Car Accident Lawyer

Identifying potential candidates is the first step in finding the best lawyer for your case. Referrals can be sought from friends, family members, and associates, or you can go online and search for a suitable candidate on various legal referral websites. Once you have identified lawyers who suit your requirements, ask for an initial consultation visit with each one of them. The purpose of a consultation visit is to decide whether you want to hire the particular lawyer or not. Ask about his or her qualifications and experience, especially in personal injury cases. Explain your case and understand all the possible outcomes of the case. The mode of payment for the lawyer’s services should also be discussed. Once you have met all the candidates, assess and compare the strengths and weaknesses of all the lawyers. The following checklist may be of help to make an informed decision.

1. Experience

The experience of the lawyer in handling similar cases is important. Ask yourself whether the lawyer understands the legal issues pertaining to your case and is familiar with the other players that will be encountered in the process of the lawsuit.

2. Legal Strategy

The legal strategy of the lawyer explains how he or she intends to proceed with your case. You should ask yourself whether you agree with the legal strategy proposed and if the legal strategy is realistic or not. Make sure you understand all the possible legal outcomes of the case.

3. Billing Rates

Most Missouri car accident lawyers charge their customers on a contingent fee basis. There are others who charge by the hour. There may be other legal expenses associated with your case. Estimate the total cost and ask yourself whether you can afford the expenses. The lawyer’s rates and the extra fees that must be paid should also be taken into consideration.

4. Comfort Level

A lawsuit can extend for a prolonged period of time. It is essential that you are comfortable with the lawyer. Did the lawyer address all your concerns and can you trust the legal advice provided by the lawyer?

iPhone finally to get crowdsourced translation app LinqApp

Good news for iPhone owners in a foreign land: a crowdsourced translation app has finally landed in the App Store.

Linqapp, which was previously available only for devices running Google's Android, is now available on the App Store.

"Real people assist in situations where computer-based systems like Google Translate meet their limitations: providing translations based on audio recordings or pictures, answering cultural questions, and sharing native-speaker expertise on grammar, vocabulary and slang," Taipei-based startup One People Co. Ltd.

The app "connects" language learners to participating native speakers, and sends notifications to the learners once an answer is available.

Users build reputation within the app by helping each other learn. In the process they provide practical translation assistance that goes beyond what Google Translate can offer, the developers said.

“With Linqapp, we are making the expertise of native speakers easily accessible to anyone, anywhere,” said co-founder Sebastian Ang.

“We believe that Linqapp can fundamentally change how people get fast assistance in situations that require the skills of a native speaker. We’re helping language learners around the world make progress on their language learning adventure,” Ang added.

How it works

Language learners can snap a picture or record an audio clip, then attach a question or request for translation, and submit it to the Linqapp community.

Native speakers of the language are notified about the new question and can answer with text, audio recording or picture.

Answers can arrive in less than three minutes for popular languages like Spanish, English and Chinese. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Outlook.com gets a new look, with new tricks and tools

 <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Au3ebMxPzF4?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

An inbox clutter management tool, 13 new themes and support for third-party add-ins are among the major new features in Microsoft's overhaul of its Outlook.com service.

In a blog post, the Outlook team also boasted of an upgraded calendar and new ways to collaborate, as Microsoft moves Outook to its Office365 infrastructure.

The upgraded look and features are rolling out to a select group for now, however.

One of the major changes is the refined inbox, which features a clutter management tool dubbed Clutter.

"Clutter works on your behalf, sorting messages you’re likely to ignore into a separate folder, so you can focus on what matters. The more you use Outlook.com, the better Clutter gets. You can help train Clutter by dragging messages in or out of the Clutter folder and you can turn it on or off depending on your preferences," it said.

The inbox will also get 13 new themes with graphic designs to help users express their personalities.

It will likewise get a link preview where Outlook.com automatically generates a rich preview if a user pastes a link into a message.

Add-ins appear while a user is reading or composing a message. These include the built-in Bing Maps, My Templates and Suggested Meetings.

But third-party add-ins may include those from Uber, Boomerang and PayPal.

Shifting between email, Skype

The new Outlook.com also allows users to shift conversations between email and Skype.

"Chat with a group, or one-on-one, using all your favorite Skype emoticons. Start a voice or video call by pressing the call button," the Outlook team said.

OneDrive

Outlook.com also features simplified sharing from OneDrive, with a user just attaching a file to a draft message and turning it into a shared OneDrive link.

Changes made to a file are automatically saved and attached to a response - "no need to download, edit, save and re-attach the revised file."

Calendar

The upgraded calendar lets a user "manage shared calendars, quickly find events by searching for the name, invitees, location or description and stay on top of the dates that matter to you with over 100 country and religious calendars," the Outlook team said.

Mobile web experience

Outlook.com is now more mobile-friendly for those who access it from a phone browser.

It has a "cleaner experience with new features like swipe gestures and support for add-ins," and mobile-friendly views for calendar and contacts.

Feedback

Microsoft also added Outlook UserVoice, a feedback mechanism to give "our community a chance to see and hear what others are saying and at the same time, creating a direct line of communication with the team that builds Outlook.com."

It described UserVoice as an open forum for people to share feedback, recommend features, and vote for ideas they like best.

Changing settings

Microsoft said Outlook.com users need not change their email addresses or adjust settings on their phones or apps.

It also said Outlook.com users do not have to pay for an Office 365 subscription, saying Outlook.com "will remain a free, ad-supported service." — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Rihanna’s 25-kg Met dress thrusts Chinese designer Guo Pei into spotlight

BEIJING - Among the opulent outfits on display at last week's Met Gala, one dramatic design stole the show.

Singer Rihanna's canary yellow cape dress, trimmed with fur the color of egg yolk and embroidered with flowers, swept behind her in a seemingly endless train as she arrived for the ball at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the biggest nights in the fashion year.

Social media lit up with chat about the dress, and the fashion magazine Vogue promptly put it on the front cover of its Met Gala Special Edition, catapulting its Chinese creator Guo Pei into the international spotlight.

Guo, a brand designer turned haute couture stylist already well-known in China, says the empress-style gown, one of her most ambitious creations, took some two years to make from its conception in 2008.

"Just designing, choosing the cloth, confirming the color and getting the material woven in Italy took almost half a year, more or less," Guo said at her studio in north Beijing.

The designer, who admitted she did not know much about Rihanna when she received the call from the Grammy Award winner, said the 25-kg (55-pound) outfit was designed to be difficult to wear to reflect the responsibilities and challenges of an empress.

"I was really not convinced that she would be able to wear it because ... it's very heavy," Guo said. "But she later told me 'This piece of clothing is so beautiful' [and] that ... she gained the courage [to wear it]. I really admired that."

The gown is now back with the designer, who hopes to display it in a museum one day.

Guo says she is now getting used to being in the spotlight. "I have no requirement to gain a certain level of fame," she said. "I just want to do really beautiful designs that everyone likes." — Reuters

The 15th season of "American Idol" starting in January will be the iconic singing competition's last, Fox Television said on Monday.

The popularity of the show, which launched the careers of stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and spawned shows such as CBS's "Rock Star" and NBC's "The Voice", has declined in recent years.

The show was once a ratings powerhouse for Fox, watched by more than 30 million viewers at its peak, but its 2014 finale drew just 10.6 million viewers.

The 15th season will feature long-time host Ryan Seacrest and celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr.

A Mother’s Day itinerary from breakfast to dinner

Almost all Filipinos know that the second Sunday of May is Mother’s Day while Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. But did you know that officially, by virtue of Proclamation No. 58 (1998) by then-President Joseph Estrada, both occasions “should” be celebrated on the first Monday of December?

As for the May and June dates, we owe that tradition to the Americans as well as the Proclamation No. 266 (1988) by former President Cory Aquino. Proclamation No. 58 may be the more legal and formal basis, but nobody seems to mind that the de facto and accepted dates for Mother’s and Father’s Days happen during in the summer months instead of in December.

Now that we got the nitty-gritty technicalities of the “holidays” out of the way, here are some ideas that you can do to treat (for some of us, and especially for me) the most important woman of in our lives.

Breakfast in bed

Treating our moms to a meal need not be too expensive nor complicated. Whip up some eggs, fry some slices of bacon or ham and toast some bread together with butter before serving it on a tray. It only take some effort and waking up before she does; besides, nobody refuses the idea of having breakfast in bed. Add a hand-written letter or heart-warming card and there’s no better way to start a day dedicated to moms the world over.

Flowers

Fresh flowers would perfectly compliment that breakfast tray of food. Skip the flower shops inside the malls and head over to Dangwa Flower Market in Dimasalang, Sampaloc for fresh and most importantly, lower priced flowers. Do buy in bulk, say a dozen or two red, pink or white local roses to get the best rates. Before pulling out your wallet though, always remember to haggle and negotiate the price down to your budget’s range.

Croque

The family can have brunch or lunch buffet at Croque Cafe + Bakery for only P399 per person. The French-themed cafe along Arnaiz (Pasay) Road will serve hearty dishes such as Grilled Pork Belly Humba Sauce with Pineapple Quinoa Salad, Herb Roasted Chicken with Chorizo Paella Rice and Fish of the Day with Potato Risoto.

Spa/massage

For the son or daughter who wants to pamper his/her mother, nothing comes close to indulgence and luxury that Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s LeSpa. For P6,000++, the three-hour Spa VIP Package starts with a 60-minute relaxing massage followed by a 90-minute Rejuvenating Facial and culminates in a 30-minute Royal Foot Massage.

Spiral, Sofitel Philippine Plaza

For the highlight of the day, head over to Spiral Buffet Restaurant as Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila’s Master Chefs have teamed up with six celebrity chefs to feature their heirloom recipes.

For Mother’s Day weekend, some of the featured dishes incorporated into Spiral’s buffet spread include the Gravlax and Cream Cheesecake of chef Mia Manuel, the Whole Baked Lapu-lapu made famous by chef Suzette Montinola of La Cocina de Tita Moning, chef Nina Daza-Puyat’s French Onion Tartlettes and Portobello Mushroom fries and Triple Chocolate Champorado by actress Judy Ann Santos.

During the formal media launching last April 28, I was able to sample a few of the dishes mentioned above. The whole baked lapu-lapu was a great start; the fish was cooked through but was still flaky and moist.

Chef Mia Manuel’s gravlax—Nordic raw salmon dish cured in salt, sugar and dill—is better eaten with a piece of bread or toast. Unfortunately, slicing the salmon into small bits made the gravlax play second fiddle to the thick layer of cream cheese.

As I was eating both the tasting portion and a later bigger portion, I could barely taste the salmon. The texture could use some improvement too as the cream cheesecake layer was really dense.

Judy Ann Santos’ Lumpiang Shanghai and Triple Cholocate Champorado were actually not bad, but the taste should be very familiar to most Filipinos. One would not guess that garlic and onion powder and bacon were added to enhance the taste of the fried spring rolls while trio of cocoa powder, milk and dark chocolate fell short to the real taste and full flavor of the tablea used in traditional champorado.

The celebrity chefs' dishes can be distinguished by the purple labels that accompany the serving dishes. Sunday brunch on May 10 is set at P3,650++ for adults and P1,600++ for children, while the dinner rate is P2,650++ for adults and P1,450++ for children.

Two more celebrity chefs will share their favorite family recipes on Father’s Day, with chef Ariel Manuel of Lolo Dad’s fame featuring Stewed Lamb Leg with Dried Mangos, Roasted Quail with Maple and Beef Salpicao with Mustard.

Chef Sandy Daza meanwhile shares his culinary discoveries and inventions such as Leyte Humba, Chicken in Coconut Milk, Hoisin Chicken with Chinese Sausage, Beef Burgundy and Smoked Fish Tofu Balls. Rates for the Father’s Day Sunday brunch and dinner are priced the same as those for Mother’s Day.

The truth is though, we as sons and daughters do not need a special day to show our love and appreciation to the women who stand as our “ilaw ng tahanan.” Whether we recognize Mother’s Day as the second Sunday of May or the official and proclaimed one during December, let us try to make every day special with regards to how we treat, love and respect the mothers in our lives.

Wishing a Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated and loving mothers in the world, most especially to my dear mom and grandma. — BM, GMA News

Manny Pacquiao wants rematch with Floyd Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao wants a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.

The Filipino ring icon made the pronouncement on Monday in a live interview on "24 Oras," a day after he lost via unanimous decision to the unbeaten American champion.

"Kung ako, gusto ko mag-rematch," said Pacquiao, adding that he wants to face Mayweather at his best. Pacquiao admitted to being affected by an injury during the fight after hurting his shoulder in training.

Pacquiao, however, doesn't know if Mayweather would want to face him again.

"Ewan ko sa kaniya kung gusto niya  mag-rematch," said Pacquiao, whose negotiations with Mayweather was off and on for five years before they finally agreed to have a fight.

There is no rematch clause in the contract of the two fighters.

Before looking at another fight with Mayweather, however, Pacquiao will undergo another magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam to determine if he needs surgery on his shoulder.

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has already express willingness to go at Mayweather again.

"I thought we fought a good fight," said the Hall of Famer. "We’d love to do it again. Hopefully as soon in the future."

Mayweather, for his part, doesn't seem to be too keen on another faceoff with Pacquiao.

"I can quit boxing today and I’m a-okay," he said. "In my era I’m TBE (The Best Ever)." -- JST, GMA News

Las Vegas police on alert ahead of Pacquiao-Mayweather fight

LAS VEGAS, United States - Las Vegas authorities could take the rare step of barring traffic from the gambling hub's famous Strip this weekend as they brace the massive crowds expected to descend on Sin City for the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao super fight.

The bout at the MGM is sold out and hotels are overflowing with guests as between 150,000 to 200,000 people are expected to pour into the desert city for the showdown being billed as the "Fight of the Century".

"We have handled events like this before where we had to shut down the Strip," Erik Newman, Deputy Fire Chief of Clark County Fire Department told Agence France-Presse. "What we are preparing for is the NBA all-star game in 2007."

Las Vegas officials are hoping to avoid a repeat of the chaotic February 2007 all-star game weekend which saw several people shot and around 400 people arrested.

Scattered fights broke out along The Strip and there were at least four shootings attributed to basketball fans.

That number includes three people who were injured outside the Minxx stripclub in a shooting that was connected to a group associated with National Football League player Adam "Pacman" Jones.

‘Whole world watching’

"The fight itself will be safe," said Newman. "Our big fear is the clubs and everything else. The problem is there are so many high-profile artists coming to town. We will have our hands full.

"We will have extra units out and metro (police) will have extra units out as well. We know the whole world will be watching."

Saturday's record-breaking spectacle, which will bring in $400 million to $500 million to the city's economy, has created its own set of security issues for law enforcement.

Larry Hadfield, spokesperson for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, said they will be beefing up their staffing in and around the MGM Grand Hotel and stepping up patrols along the main casino strip.

Hadfield told AFP they started planning for the blockbuster bout the moment it was announced in February.

"We are planning for the worst. We are getting pretty good at doing these big events. We have a vast number of resources," he said.

Besides the hotel security, police will also be working with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

Crowd control inside the 16,000 seat MGM's Grand Garden Arena is also a concern.

The Grand Garden has been the scene of two recent post-fight stampedes, including one after the Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight last May that injured 60 people. The stampede was caused when a partition that fell in the lobby area sounded like gunshots to the crowd that was exiting the arena.

Another less serious stampede happened in the same lobby when the crowd was leaving the Mayweather-Maidana rematch fight in September.

In September 1996, the MGM was the scene of an incident involving the late rapper Tupac Shakur. After the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight, Shakur was caught on a video camera beating a man in the hotel's lobby area. Later that night Shakur was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in a killing that has yet to be solved.

"We're not going to let the criminal element take over and make our town unsafe," Roxanne McDaris, Lieutenant with the events planning section of the Las Vegas police, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper earlier this week. "We're doing everything in our power to make it safe."

Tim Jeffery, MGM's vice president of security, said security will be enhanced with their hotel employees supplementing the police.

Jeffrey also said they are going streamline crowd control after the fight and open more exit doors to prevent another lobby stampede.

"We are going to be directing people to specific exits to avoid that logjam," he said. "You will see a noticeable increase in the number of security." — Agence France-Presse

Mayweather, a perfect fighter but flawed man, cashes in

LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather Jr. describes himself as a perfectionist and inside the ring the boxer known as the 'Money Man' is just that, his flawless professional record of 47-0 a monument to perfection.

But outside the arena Mayweather's pursuit of an equally accomplished life ended long ago in defeat, the gunman of his own character assassination.

Over the last decade, Mayweather has been accused of assaulting five different women on at least seven different occasions, including a 2010 incident that resulted in a 90-day prison sentence.

But it is the perfect fighter not the flawed man some boxing fans will pay over $100,000 to watch on Saturday when Mayweather steps into the ring at the MGM Grand Arena to face the soft-spoken but stone fisted Manny Pacquiao in what is expected to be the biggest grossing prize fight of all time.

"I'm a little different from everyone else," Mayweather explained to reporters. "I am only human, I make mistakes. I try to be a perfectionist but no one is perfect.

"We don't know how this fight is going to play out but I believe in my skills."

Supreme confidence and self-belief are qualities that have never been in short supply for a boxer who has not tasted defeat since a controversial loss to Bulgarian Serafim Todorov in a semi-final bout at the 1996 Olympics.

That loss so stung Mayweather that he vowed never to lose again. He immediately turned professional and 19 years later has held true to his word, capturing 11 world titles in five weight divisions and amassed a fortune that last year put him atop Forbes' annual rankings of the highest paid athletes.

Win-or-lose on Saturday, the title of the world's best paid sportsman is one Mayweather is likely to maintain with a guaranteed payday of $120 million that some predict could top $180 million, depending on pay-per-view buys.

The money will support a lavish lifestyle that includes a Las Vegas mansion, a fleet of exotic cars and a private jet that he says he will use after the fight to criss-cross the United States to watch the NBA playoffs.

Latest stop

The glitz of the Las Vegas Strip and Saturday's 'Fight of the Century' is the latest stop in a decades-long journey that began 38 years ago in the grit and grime of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Mayweather Jr. was born into a boxing obsessed family to a drug addict mother and it was there in the rust belt that his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard, would polish and hone his son's considerable boxing skills.

Over the years the Mayweather father/son, trainer/boxer relationship has been a stormy one, Floyd Sr. once using his young son as a human shield when a relative threatened to shoot him.

For all the strain and long periods of estrangement, however, the Mayweathers have so far developed an unbeatable game plan and on Saturday Floyd Sr. will be in his son's corner mapping out the strategy.

"From the beginning of my career, I've always had a game plan. It's just like chess," said Mayweather.

"We make calculated moves in the ring and outside the ring. I got with the right team and surrounded myself with the right chess pieces. I'm a lot older now, a lot wiser."

Indeed, the father of four appears to have undergone a noticeable personality change that hints at a new maturity ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

Gone, for the moment, is the brash, trash-talking Mayweather to be replaced by a reflective fighter more keenly aware of his legacy.

Now 38, Mayweather veered of topic during a pre-fight news conference to talk about the part a parent plays as a role model while declaring himself a pioneering anti-doping crusader for taking a stand against drugs and refusing fight Pacquiao until the Filipino agreed to out-of-competition blood-testing.

"Children should look up to their parents first," said Mayweather. "Parents should be the role model first before an athlete.

"We do certain things, I come out I speak loud, I have the flamboyant 'Money Mayweather' persona but that doesn't mean I hate anyone. It is all about entertainment. People want to be entertained." — Reuters
