Apple expected to unveil new iPads, Mac in New York

NEW YORK — New iPads and Mac computers are expected Tuesday as part of an Apple event in New York.

The event is being held at an opera house in Brooklyn, suggesting Apple is pushing products focused on creativity and the arts.

As overall tablet sales decline, Apple has been promoting its high-end iPad Pro as ideal for artists, photographers and other creators. A new model is expected, as the last update came nearly 17 months ago.

There’s been speculation the new iPad Pro will adopt features found in the latest iPhones, including facial-recognition technology to unlock the device. Apple isn’t giving details about the event.

Apple may also release a new Mac, including a MacBook Air laptop, though higher-end MacBook Pro laptops just got refreshed in July.  /kga

Curry sets another record for 3s, Warriors hold off Nets

NEW YORK — Golden State appeared on its way to another easy victory when the game suddenly turned into a 3-point shootout.

Luckily for the Warriors, they have the perfect guy for that.

Stephen Curry set another NBA record by making seven 3-pointers and finished with 35 points as the Warriors held on to beat the Brooklyn Nets 120-114 on Sunday.

Kevin Durant added 34 for the Warriors, who were coasting before the Nets made it close with some sizzling shooting behind the arc.

Curry finally turned them back when his final 3-pointer made it 115-108 with 1:07 to play. He has made at least five 3s in all seven games, breaking George McCloud’s record of six games in a row during the 1995-96 season.

“They got hot in the fourth to try to make it interesting, but made enough plays down the stretch to obviously get the win,” Curry said.

Klay Thompson continued to struggle behind the arc, going 1 for 5 and falling to 5 for 36 this season. He finished with 18 points and still hasn’t had a 20-point outing this season.

D’Angelo Russell scored 25 points and Caris LeVert had 23 for the Nets, who made 20 3-pointers in 42 attempts and cut a 19-point deficit down to two.

“I think the 3-pointer got them back in the game and ended up we had to play a little bit and execute down the stretch, so it was a solid outing for us,” Durant said.

Golden State has won four in a row since its lone loss and the previous three were all by at least 20 points. The franchise record is four straight 20-point victories, set by the San Francisco Warriors in 1966-67, and it appeared the Warriors were going to equal that.

Curry scored 16 points in the first quarter. The Nets hung close until midway through the second, and another 3 by Curry pushed it to 63-44 with 1:55 remaining in the half.

“The way the first half went we easily could have kind of folded and that’s not what kind of guys we have in that locker room,” Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. “They’re a resilient bunch and I thought they competed their tails off and it was good for the fans to see that we didn’t just succumb to their talent or their aura so to speak.”

Draymond Green had a season-high 13 assists.

TIP-INS

Warriors: G Shaun Livingston missed the game with a sore right foot. … Thompson met before the game with 14 young players from the Caribbean who are part of the NBA’s Jumpstart program. The players who got to visit NBA facilities and landmarks in New York were picked by Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry after they participated in an elite camp for Caribbean-based players age 17 and younger in Trinidad and Tobago.

Nets: Brooklyn has lost the last seven meetings. … Russell made five 3s, while LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie and Allen Crabbe all had four.

SORRY, COACH

Steve Kerr said DeMarcus Cousins apologized for his ejection Friday against the Knicks.

Cousins was sitting on the bench in street clothes when he argued with referee Scott Foster, who gave him a technical foul and then threw him out of the game. Kerr said they had a good talk since and the volatile center understands things are different with the Warriors than his previous teams.

“That kind of stuff is not going to help us win a championship, it’s not going to help his reputation and I think he understands that,” Kerr said.

SOMBER SPEAKING

A somber Kerr said the sad thing about the shooting that killed 11 in a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday is that he’s not surprised when it happens because there is so much gun violence and division in the U.S.

“We’re broken right now and so nothing surprises us anymore, or nothing surprises me anymore,” Kerr said. “Shootings at schools and churches, synagogues, malls, movie theaters, and we need our leaders to step up and unite the country with the appropriate words and the appropriate actions and we’re not getting that right now. It’s frustrating and I don’t know what else to say.”

Kerr said he planned to vote for all candidates who back gun control and safety. His father, Malcolm Kerr, a professor who served as president of the American University of Beirut, was shot and killed outside his office in the war-torn Lebanese capital in 1984.

Red Sox pinch-hitters come up clutch again in World Series

LOS ANGELES — Boston’s bench is a big reason why the Red Sox are one win from their fourth World Series title since 2004.

With the Red Sox regulars being held in check by the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was pinch-hitters Mitch Moreland and Rafael Devers who came up with huge at-bats as Boston rallied for a 9-6 victory Saturday to take a 3-1 lead in the Series.

Moreland hit a three-run homer off Ryan Madson in the seventh inning and Devers singled home Brock Holt with the tiebreaking run in the ninth.

Boston’s pinch-hitters have come up big all Series. Through the first four games, they are 6 for 18 (.333) with two home runs and seven RBIs. The Red Sox are batting .218 overall.

“The bench has been the key to our entire playoffs,” slugger J.D. Martinez said. “The guys that no one expects are the ones who are delivering. It is unreal.”

Moreland’s homer to right field on a first-pitch changeup from Ryan Madson was Boston’s second pinch-hit homer in the World Series. The 1959 Dodgers and 1975 Red Sox are the only other teams with multiple pinch-hit home runs in the same Fall Classic. Not bad for a team that hit only two pinch-hit homers during the course of a 162-game regular season.

Moreland joins Bernie Carbo (who had two in 1975), Bobby Kielty (2007) and Eduardo Nunez (Game 1 this year) as Boston players who have homered in a World Series game as pinch-hitters.

“With the way we play, we’re constantly trying to get some guys on base, put pressure on the other side. So we got that chance right there,” Moreland said after hitting his third World Series home run. “I saw him throw a couple of changeups to Jackie (Bradley Jr.) up in the zone. I decided, why not sit on that one first pitch? And when he threw it, I saw it pretty good, and put a good swing on it.”

It was Moreland’s fourth career postseason homer but first as a pinch-hitter. Prior to that swing, Moreland was batting .250 this postseason (4 for 16) but was 1 for 6 in a pinch-hitting role.

Devers was batting .276 (8 for 29) for the postseason, and Saturday night was only the third time he has been brought in off the bench. After Holt doubled off Dylan Floro with one out, Devers laced a 2-0 changeup to center, scoring Holt for a 5-4 lead, and the Red Sox went on to score five runs in the ninth.

The third baseman, who turned 22 on Wednesday, became the youngest player in World Series history to have a pinch-hit, go-ahead RBI in the ninth inning or later. The last player younger than 23 to deliver a pinch-hit RBI in the Fall Classic was Pittsburgh’s Milt May in 1971 against Baltimore.

“I was just ready for my moment to come, whenever that may be,” Devers said. “Being in the National League, you’ve got to be ready from the first inning with obviously the pitchers hitting. So I just wanted to be ready for whatever the situation was.”

Red Sox hitting coach Tim Hyers said Boston’s bench success can mostly be attributed to first-year manager Alex Cora and the way he has been able to keep everyone involved by always communicating to players about when they will be used during a game.

“He just has a way of giving them confidence by telling them, ‘I am going to use you here, be ready, be prepared’ and then it happens,” Hyers said. “They are prepared and have confidence when they walk out to the batter’s box because the manager has prepared them to go out and show.”

Dodgers’ Machado stands out for lack of hustle again

LOS ANGELES — Manny Machado’s lack of hustle is starting to stand out more than his offense this postseason.

The star shortstop had a little too much self-confidence in the sixth inning Friday night when he thought he homered for the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 3 of the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Instead, Machado ended up admiring what turned out to be a 368-foot single as it bounced off the wall in left field.

Had Machado run it out, it might have been a double. It also turned out to be his only hit as he went 1 for 7 in the Dodgers’ 3-2 win in 18 innings early Saturday that trimmed their Series deficit to 2-1.

“I looked up at first and thought it wasn’t going and then I saw it take up and thought it was going to go out,” Machado said. “That was very, very, very, very, very poor baserunning by me.”

It is not the first time this postseason that Machado’s effort level has become an issue. He was criticized for not hustling during a groundout in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series against Milwaukee.

Machado said in an interview on FS1 during the NLCS that he’s well aware he’s not going to be known as a hustling type of player, but that is how he has played throughout his career.

He was much more critical of himself after Friday night’s game.

“I probably wasn’t going to be on second base but that was very embarrassing,” he said.

Things didn’t get much better for Machado in the eighth when he struck out on Matt Barnes’ high fastball on a full count with a runner on first. Two innings later he popped out to shortstop Xander Bogaerts after Max Muncy doubled with two outs. That dropped Machado to 0 for 9 in his career against Boston closer Craig Kimbrel.

Machado also flied out in the 13th after Muncy walked leading off the inning.

The 26-year-old Machado can become a free agent this offseason and is expected to command a large contract. He drew the ire of Milwaukee players and fans — not to mention a fine — for kicking Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar near the ankle as he jogged out a groundout during the NLCS.

There was also a pair of hard slides into Orlando Arcia in Game 3 while the Milwaukee shortstop was attempting to turn double plays. The antics led Brewers star Christian Yelich to call Machado “a dirty player,” but the Dodgers slugger has seemed to embrace the role of villain this October.

The baserunning gaffes are overshadowing what has been a productive month for Machado, acquired from Baltimore on July 19. He is batting .255 in the postseason but leads the Dodgers in home runs (three) and RBIs (11).

Machado is 3 for 14 in the World Series but thinks the Dodgers have momentum after their dramatic win.

“This is huge. We were grinding until the last run came across the board. We’re 2-1 in the Series, which we needed,” he said. “We’ll get some rest and get back at it.”

With Kobe watching, LeBron scores triple-double to lead Lakers to 2nd win

LOS ANGELES — When Kobe Bryant took a courtside seat in the first quarter, Staples Center buzzed with excitement for the mere sight of the most popular athlete in this building’s history.

The crowd even started a “Kobe! Kobe!” chant in the fourth quarter — and it was immediately drowned out by cheers when LeBron James hit a 3-pointer.

With the symbol of the Los Angeles Lakers’ past watching in approval, James and the Lakers’ young core proved that their present and future is pretty tantalizing, too.

James had 28 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds while leading a late rally for his first home victory with the Lakers, 128-111 over the previously unbeaten Denver Nuggets on Thursday night.

LeBron and Kobe didn’t get a chance to talk, but the longtime friendly rivals likely both left happy with the Lakers’ new direction after James’ first triple-double for LA.

“Of course I noticed him sitting right on the baseline over there,” James said. “One of the all-time Laker greats. What he’s done for this franchise in his 20-plus years here speaks wonders for me. To be able to compete against him all those years, and for me to be able to share a jersey, the same jersey as him at this point, is pretty special.”

With Bryant in attendance for the first time since LeBron’s arrival in LA, Kyle Kuzma scored 22 points and JaVale McGee added 21 to complement James’ 74th career triple-double.

But the result was even more impressive: The Lakers trailed by eight points with six minutes left in the fourth quarter before Lance Stephenson, who finished with 12 points, started a 15-2 rally with back-to-back 3-pointers.

“The first couple of games, when we fell behind, we stayed behind,” James said. “Tonight when we fell behind, we learned from our mistakes, and that’s one of the most important things in life.”

James got Staples Center rocking on a go-ahead dunk with 3:31 to play before Lonzo Ball made an artful step-back 3-pointer. Kuzma added two huge dunks down the stretch of Los Angeles’ second win in two days after an 0-3 start.

“LeBron is doing what he always does,” Denver coach Michael Malone said. “And LeBron is bringing all those guys their confidence way up. You’re seeing Kyle Kuzma and LeBron, their chemistry growing.”

Nikola Jokic scored 24 points for the Nuggets, who were off to their best start since the 2009-10 season. Jamal Murray scored 22 points and Monte Morris had 20, but Denver couldn’t answer the Lakers’ rally led by James, who posted his third career triple-double in Staples Center for his third different team.

“We just came out on the short end today, but we’ve got a couple of days off to revamp ourselves,” said Morris, who added seven assists in just his eighth NBA game.

One night after earning their first win of the LeBron era in Phoenix, the Lakers beat the Nuggets at Staples for the fourth straight time.

TIP-INS

Nuggets: Isaiah Thomas attended the game, but didn’t play while recovering from offseason hip surgery. The compact guard finished last season with the Lakers, averaging 15.6 points in 17 games after getting traded by James’ Cavaliers. … Will Barton missed his third straight game with a hip injury.

Lakers: Rookie Svi Mykhailiuk had four points. The Ukrainian guard scored his first NBA points one night earlier in Phoenix. … Fans near courtside besides Bryant included actor Michael B. Jordan, Dodgers slugger Yasiel Puig and NFL rushing leader Todd Gurley.

MISSING GUYS

The Lakers played their third straight game without suspended starters Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo. Ingram will miss one more game for his role in the Lakers’ brawl with the Houston Rockets last weekend, while Rondo can return Saturday in San Antonio.

KOBE’S HOUSE

Bryant sat with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, his former agent, in a rare visit since the 20-year Lakers veteran retired in 2016. Bryant spoke to a group of season ticket holders before the game about his forthcoming book.

“That’s one of my favorite players,” a visibly excited Stephenson said afterward. “He was like, ‘Good game,’ after the game, so I was a little hyped.”

LANCE BOILS

Stephenson provided an enormous boost for the Lakers on both ends of the court, in his usual inimitable style. The veteran said he came off the bench with a specific plan in mind: “Aggressive defense, and attack the big man (Jokic). We felt like their big man couldn’t match our intensity, so when I got in there, I was like, ‘Man, I’m going to attack the big man.'”

Stephen Curry dazzles for 51 points in sensational start

OAKLAND, Calif. — Stephen Curry appreciated the freedom from coach Steve Kerr to shoot from wherever he darn well pleased, no distance off limits.

On this night, Curry could get away with anything. He was feeling it.

“It is nice to turn around and not hear your coach on the sideline chewing you out,” Curry said. “I’d like to say I deserve that little wiggle room there for sure.”

Even with another post-championship, whirlwind summer that included welcoming a son, more golf tournaments and travel, Curry considered it among his best and most productive offseasons.

His body is fully healthy and recovered after the Golden State superstar played only 51 regular-season games during the latest championship run because of injuries.

Through five games, Curry is as dominant as ever — as evidenced in a spectacular 51-point performance in Wednesday night’s 144-122 win against the Wizards playing only three quarters. He scored 18 straight for the Warriors during one stretch.

“It was a joy to be on the same court with that, that was sick,” Kevin Durant said

“That boy good!” teammate Shaun Livingston tweeted immediately after the game.

His teammates notice Curry’s purpose when he takes the floor each day, whether practice or a game.

“Just to be great, it’s that simple,” Klay Thompson said earlier Wednesday. “He’s never satisfied. We saw that after the first year he won MVP he came back even better and had an historic season. And nothing’s changed since four years ago or since he got in the league. That’s what makes him so great, is his humility and his ability to just keep working.”

The Warriors are practically spoiled by the brilliance of No. 30, as great as ever at age 30 and in his 10th NBA season.

Kerr insists Curry is stronger than ever and “at his physical and mental peak.”

“He’s got a great life, doesn’t he?” Kerr said. “I just think that part of what makes Steph great is who he is as a person and what his life is about. He loves life. He takes so much joy out of every single day,” Kerr said. “… Steph has a joy about him that I think everyone in the building can see and feel, so he brings that and I think you talk about wanting people to have a balanced life and how powerful that can be. I think he’s a prime example of that.”

Curry scored 31 in the first half, finished with his sixth career 50-point game and made 10 or more 3s for the 10th time. The 51 points matched his most at Oracle Arena.

He hit his first five 3-pointers and had the ninth 30-point half of his career, drawing “MVP!” chants all evening long from an adoring home crowd.

Curry shot 15 for 24, 11 of 16 from 3-point range and made all 10 free throws, missing his career high of 54 set in February 2013 by three points.

“Some of the shots that he was making, you don’t see that,” Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. “He’s a special player, a special scorer, a special shooter. He’s taking 35-foot shots, it’s hard to double team a guy who’s that far out, and he makes them like they’re layups. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Kerr and Brooks each considered Curry “video-game” good.

“We are kind of used to it with Steph,” Kerr said before Curry’s latest brilliance. “He’s just so consistent and so lethal.”

Curry hurt his left knee March 23 just as he had come back from a six-game absence with a right ankle injury. He also missed 11 games last December with a sprained right ankle.

He then sat out the first round of the playoffs before returning for Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Pelicans.

Then after another title was in hand, a third in four years to put the Warriors in dynasty status, Curry struck a balance during the summer to both push and pace himself to stay on the floor for the long haul because “There’s a lot to gain, there’s a lot more to accomplish.”

“I definitely expect it, I expect it every year,” Curry said. “I don’t wake up when I do in the summers and put all those hours in just to show up during the season with no confidence and no kind of rhythm. This summer for a lot of different reasons it was a great kind of consistent approach to what I was trying to get out of my training and things like that. Had I started off cold, I would have had the same confidence because of the work that I put in and things would have hopefully turned around. The way that I started, I just want to keep going and not change what I’m doing.”

How scary is it to think Curry can elevate his game to another level?

“Not for me,” Draymond Green quipped. “For other people it may be scary. It’s exciting to me. He’s been real locked in. Everything’s been laser-focused, whether it’s him starting in the games, in practice, or getting his work in in the weight room, he’s been locked in. So it’s been good to see.”

As Curry simply put it: “Every game is an opportunity to do something special.”

Apple lists price for iPhone XR repairs — and it hurts

Four days before its official launch, Apple has unveiled the price to repair an iPhone XR screen: $199 (over P10,600).

The iPhone XR repair costs seem expensive until you compare them to that of the iPhone X, XS and XS Max; then it seems like you’re getting a real bargain.

On Monday, the service pricing of the iPhone XR, which officially releases on Oct. 26, was added to the Apple site: screen repair and other damages will cost you $199 (over P10,600) and $399 (over P21,000), respectively. With the phone itself costing $749 (around P40,000), the damage repair could cost over half of what you paid in the first place, so it’s best to invest in a tough case and sturdy screen protector, especially since the Apple warranty doesn’t’ cover, “accidental damage or mishandling.”

To fix just the screen of the iPhone XS Max, you’ll have to drop over a hundred more than for the iPhone XR totaling $329 (nearly P18,000), and other damage repairs will cost you $599 (over P32,000). However, if you do have AppleCare+, a screen replacement for all iPhone models, the XR, XS Max, and everything else, will only cost $29 (around P1,500) and all other damages will total $99 (around P5,300). 4 Reasons Why You Should Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage

The first thing to do before deciding on whether or not to buy a home is to set aside a budget., however, trying to set up a budget by yourself can prove to be a very taxing and difficult task. The amount of debt your holding, your down payment amount, your credit score, as well as your job history are all factors that you need to take into consideration before creating a budget for your new home. As such, it is highly recommended that you consult with a qualified lender in order to be pre-approved for a mortgage. Then and only then should you set-up a consultation with a real estate broker.

Getting pre-approved for a mortgage can be used to your advantage in a financial situation. Below are 4 reasons why you should get pre-approved for a mortgage, and how doing so can be leveraged to your benefit.

Boost Your Credibility

Getting pre-approved for a mortgage demonstrates to all the parties involved that you are not only committed to buying a home but are also capable of doing so. Most sellers don’t want to deal with uncertainty before they sell their home, and you can showcase your seriousness about the transaction by getting pre-approved for a mortgage. In fact, your offer may directly depend on getting a mortgage approved, and the lack of assurance can cause trepidation in the seller’s mind; they may worry that the deal will fall through, wasting their time and effort.

As a result, some buyers will only work with people who have been pre-approved for a mortgage so that they have some peace of mind. For instance, in the event a seller has multiple prospective buyers, the chances that you will be their choice will go up exponentially if you’ve been pre-approved, as it will significantly boost your credibility and reliability as well.

Helps Your Realtor Work More Effectively For You

Nothing defines a budget more effectively than being pre-approved for a mortgage. Your agent will now have all the tools and information needed to help you buy the home of your dreams. Having that precious intel will allow them to focus your search far more efficiently. You can prioritize according to your budgetary restrictions, and also go through your wish list by clearly identifying your needs and preferences. What’s more, your real estate agent will use the information you’ve provided to hone in on specific neighbourhoods, getting you the home of your dreams quicker than you can say, ‘pre-approved mortgage’.

Being pre-approved also means your agent can use that information to negotiate a better deal for you. The leverage that a pre-approval can provide should never be underestimated, nor should the competitive advantage that it provides prospective buyers over their non-approved counterparts. Think of a pre-approved mortgage as a bargaining chip that your agent can use to help you get the best possible price or value for your hard-earned dollar, as the seller will know that the offer on the table is solid.

Enjoy Peace of Mind

By having complete control over your finances you will avoid the ambiguity that often comes with a new home purchase. The lender should outline all of the clandestine costs that you may not have been aware of prior to purchase and should explain what you can and can’t afford so that you don’t suffer financially in the long run. A pre-approved mortgage means you don’t need to worry about accidentally overextending your finances or any fees getting overlooked in the process.

The last thing you want to do is make an offer on a home that you simply cannot afford, either now or long term. Applying for a mortgage — any type of mortgage — can be arduous and stressful. Getting pre-approved takes care of matters up front, and having your finances in check allows you to go through the transaction with both control and confidence.

Smart Business Sense

Believe it or not, getting pre-approved for a loan is a fairly easy process. You don’t need to worry about paying any fees either. You can have the peace of mind that there is no obligation on your part even in the event that you are pre-approved for the mortgage. In other words, there is no pressure or costs to worry about, so why not see if you qualify? There is literally nothing to lose other than a few moments of your time, and being pre-approved can be the difference between owning the home of your dreams and settling for mediocrity.

You can also use the opportunity to speak to a financial advisor. They will address any fears or concerns you may have, and help you make sound financial decisions right from the get-go. In fact, they will help custom tailor a solution that caters to your unique needs, your future plans, your current budget, as well as your future earning potential. With so many advantages and no real drawbacks, it just makes smart business sense to consult with a financial advisor to determine if you qualify for a pre-approved mortgage.

When Playtime is Over

Shopping online for your fantasy home can be a fun experience, but when you are actually serious about turning your dreams into a reality, then getting pre-approved for a mortgage can help create a solid foundation before you take the final step and become a homeowner.

How To Choose Between a Variable or Fixed Rate Mortgage

The difference between fixed and variable rate mortgages has narrowed over the last few years. Fixed rate mortgages have the advantage of peace of mind, as the payments are fixed monthly. However, their rates have also been steadily increasing in recent years. In comparison, variable rate mortgages tend to be lower in their rates, but also include additional risks. As a result, determining which to go with can provide a nerve-racking and daunting task. Here, we will help you choose between a variable or fixed rate mortgage by assessing your risk tolerance, lifestyle, and income.

Rewards vs Risk

As mentioned, variable rate mortgages, which also go by the names adjustable rate mortgages, tend to entice prospective homeowners with their lower base interest rates when compared to fixed-rate mortgages. However, the initially lower interest rates also have their drawbacks, as interest rates are subject to change without notice. As a result, volatile market conditions can cause interest rates to rise exponentially, placing a greater financial strain on buyers who aren’t prepared to absorb the additional costs.

As a result, you need to determine whether or not you can afford a possible interest rate increase in the future before deciding which choice is better for you and your family. For instance, if you think you’ll be able to afford a sudden 2% increase in interest rates, then a variable rate mortgage may be the right choice. To better determine which option will suit you, you need to assess your current income and potential future earnings. If your current job has room for advancement then you may be able to whether any interest increase storms in the not too distant future.

Mitigating Risk

You can actually take advantage of a variable rate mortgage while also mitigating some of the risk by fixing your monthly payments at an amount that is higher than the required minimum payment. In other words, if you simply make the minimum monthly payments then a variable rate mortgage may not be right for you, as you may be unable to take the hit of a marketed interest rate increase in the not too distant future.

This is why many financial advisors recommend that borrowers set their payments at the current 5-year fixed rate. This will allow borrowers to have a buffer in the event that rates rise in the future. In addition, they will be able to benefit from the lower variable interest rate as they will be able to allocate more of their payments in order to pay down the principal.

In other words, you’ll be able to benefit from your prepayment privileges while also staying ahead of your amortization payments. Another advantage is that you’ll be able to lock in for the remainder of the term in the event that interest rates do rise, essentially providing you with the best of both worlds.

Understanding Market Volatility

It doesn’t really matter whether you have a dozen doctorates in economics and finance or just a high school diploma. Trying to determine the ebbs and flows of interest rates is virtually impossible. Some borrowers may opt to stick with a variable rate mortgage when interest rates are low and then switch to a fixed mortgage rate when they notice interest rates start to increase.

However, most financial experts advise against this strategy due to the volatility of the market. The safe bet is to think of your long-term financial goals and needs. That is, if you think you will save more money on average over the long-term by going with the initially lower interest rates of a variable rate mortgage, then chose it.

Analyzing Conversion Rates

If you are currently under a variable mortgage plan then check to see the conversion rates, as well as whether or not you can convert it to a fixed rate at any time. If you can convert at any time with your current plan then find out the interest rate you would obtain if you were to switch out for a fixed mortgage option. Also, don’t just settle for the posted rate. That is, the posted rate may be 5.69% but a little sleuthing may help you obtain a lower fixed rate, such as 3.69%

Opt-In for the Popular Choice

Many Canadians end up choosing a fixed 5-year term when deciding on which mortgage scheme to go with. Also, the drop in rates, as well as the narrowing of the spread between variable mortgages and fixed rate mortgages, have only made choosing a fixed rate mortgage plan even more appealing to many Canadians.

The general rule of thumb is that when fixed-rate interest rates are within a point of their variable rate counterparts, then going with fixed is the way to go. As of this writing, the differential was within 1 percentage point. Many young families with children opt for the fixed mortgage option because it is the safer bet. Having a fixed rate means that families can budget easier and more effectively and plan for the length of their mortgage term. If you are the type of person who always chooses an extended warranty plan when you purchase a new gadget or appliance then it recommended that you choose a fixed mortgage option for that additional peace of mind.

Don’t Decide Alone

Deciding on whether to go with a fixed term mortgage or a variable term mortgage is not an easy task, and should not be taken lightly. Volatile market conditions and an uncertain job market can prove dire for some first-time homeowners, so your best bet is to plan a meeting with your financial advisor to determine which option is best suited for your unique needs. They will be able to better assess your finances, your future goals, both career and family in order to recommend the best mortgage solution for you and your loved ones.

Minnesota Timberwolves clamp down on Indiana Pacers in 101-91 win

MINNEAPOLIS — Through the first three games of the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves were not playing the type of defense that head coach Tom Thibodeau wanted to see.

That changed Monday night.

Minnesota clamped down on the defensive end against Indiana as Jimmy Butler returned to the lineup to score 20 points to lead the Timberwolves to a 101-91 win over the Pacers.

“We played a little bit of defense finally,” Butler said. “It felt good.”

Butler, who received a mix of boos and cheers during player introductions, sat out Saturday due to precautionary rest. Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota, while rookie guard Josh Okogie scored 12 points off the bench.

Minnesota also played most of Monday’s game without forward Andrew Wiggins, who exited in the first quarter due to a right quad contusion and did not return. Wiggins scored two points in eight minutes before the injury.

Thibodeau said Wiggins is day-to-day and the team will know more Tuesday about the injury. Wiggins, a Toronto native, indicated that he’ll play Wednesday at the Raptors.

Okogie saw his minutes increase in Wiggins’ absence. Okogie made the most of the extended playing time and the home crowd at Target Center gave the rookie a nice ovation as he took a seat on the bench late in the fourth quarter.

While Okogie struggled from the floor early, he kept shooting at the behest of his teammates — and his head coach.

“I just like the way he sort of persevered through it,” Thibodeau said of Okogie. “I thought the spirit of the team was strong. His teammates were encouraging him to shoot, and he just kept playing, which I think is important.”

The Wolves led by as many as nine early before Indiana cut it to one point at the half. Victor Oladipo scored 15 of his 20 points before halftime to lead the Pacers. He has now scored at least 20 points in three straight games.

Bojan Bogdanovic also had 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Pacers, while Myles Turner chipped in 16.

“I feel like overall, they kinda forced us into some tough shots as well,” Oladipo said. “Credit them, they did a pretty good job defensively.”

Minnesota’s reserves went on a 12-0 run to open the fourth quarter and take an 84-73 lead — its biggest of the game. Derrick Rose scored four of his 11 points during the run to put the Wolves ahead after they trailed by one entering the fourth.

After allowing 140 points in a loss Saturday to Dallas, Minnesota’s defense tightened Monday against a Pacers team that scored 132 points its last time out. The Wolves held Indiana to just 38.8 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. The 91 points allowed was the first time Minnesota held a team under 100 this season.

Indiana shot over 55 percent in two of its first three games before shooting 39.6 percent on Monday.

“I thought our shot collection was poor,” said Pacers coach Nate McMillan. “We didn’t have ball movement. Basically we were taking quick shots and taking quick, contested shots.”

TIP-INS

Pacers: F Domantas Sabonis returned to action Monday after missing Saturday’s game against Brooklyn. Sabonis had eight points in 17 minutes off the bench. … Indiana assigned C Ike Anigbogu to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League on Monday. Anigbogu played three minutes Saturday.

Wolves: C Karl-Anthony Towns had 17 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. … F Taj Gibson’s 3-pointer in the first quarter Monday marked the first time he connected from downtown since Dec. 31, 2017, which also came against Indiana.

COLD FROM DEEP

The Timberwolves struggled from 3-point range in Monday’s game, finishing 7-for-33 from behind the arc. They were just 3-of-26 after three quarters before shooting 4-of-7 in the fourth.

PUSHING THE TEMPO

Minnesota led Indiana in fast break points, 26-8. Much of that was a result of the Wolves’ ability to get stops on the defensive end and turn the ball up the floor quickly. Ten of those fast break points came in the fourth quarter.

“Our stops got us into the open floor,” Thibodeau said.

Is Samsung planning a truly notch-less and bezel-less future?

Notable tech-leaker Ice Universe managed to get a look at what is revealed at the highly exclusive 2018 Samsung OLED Forum on Friday and shared all the under-display mobile tech that’s on its way in 2019.

Samsung has a reputation for mocking smartphone notches (such as that on the Pixel 3), but honestly, who can blame them? Sure, notches have a practical purpose like housing camera lenses, speakers, and a variety of sensors, nevertheless, they have a reputation for being so unaesthetic that some Pixel 3 users have been digging into their phones’ user settings to hide the notch completely by implementing a screen-wide black bar.

And it looks like Samsung wants to avoid the notch and a black bar after what Ice Universe revealed was on show at the incredibly private 2018 Samsung OLED Forum at the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel in China with about 20 business partners present, according to Forbes.

During a PowerPoint presentation, the company revealed four new technologies that will drive their smartphone development over the upcoming year: FoD (fingerprint sensing tech under the display), UPS (under-the-screen sensor tech), HoD (touch-sensitive tech), and SoD (“screen sound tech”).

Since the FoD and SoD tech already exist on the market and HoD tech isn’t exactly novel, the key innovation here is that UPS tech. That right there is what will bring us a notchless AND bezel-less screen that is, basically, the display of our dreams that has been just out of reach of today’s tech.

Needless to say, this would be a breakthrough for the smartphone market. There’s no word yet on the public release of such an innovation or the launch of the long-awaited folding Galaxy F. Perhaps, both will be arriving soon, maybe even together. Is this the end of smartphone displays as we know it? As Samsung said themselves. CC

Carmina on replacing Regine

She’s the Songbird; I’m just a frustrated singer,” jested Carmina Villaroel, who took over Regine Velasquez’s hosting duties in the GMA 7 talk show, “Sarap Diva”—renamed “Sarap, ’Di Ba?”—after the songstress transferred to ABS-CBN recently.

“As much as I want to sing … I can’t do it! We’re different, but I hope I can give the show’s followers the same kind of fun, joy and entertainment,” she told reporters at a recent press conference for the said weekly morning program, which started airing last Saturday.

Carmina was joined by her twins, Mavy and Cassy Legaspi. And the show, she said, will be tweaked to better suit the actress-TV host. “It’ll be more family-oriented. We will try to bridge the gap between us and today’s youth, so we could understand them better,” she said.

Asked if she’s ready for the inevitable comparisons, Carmina said: “I don’t want to stress over that. Some things end, and a new chapter begins. If it’s not me, someone else will be replacing Regine, no matter what … I’m taking this as a blessing and an opportunity.”

Carmina is also happy that Regine has been nothing but supportive of her, even promoting the show on social media. “She was happy when she found out I was going to be the new host,” she said. “She didn’t need [to endorse] the show, but she did—and that’s nice of her. I’m thankful for the support.” —ALLAN POLICARPIO

With no Leonard, Lowry lifts Raptors over Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) — Taking over with Kawhi Leonard getting a night off, Kyle Lowry delivered 28 points and 12 assists Saturday night to help the Toronto Raptors improve to 3-0 with a 117-113 victory over the Washington Wizards.

The Raptors rested Leonard on the second half of a back-to-back and third game in four days to open the season.

Washington finished the game without ejected coach Scott Brooks. Bradley Beal scored 32 points, going 6 for 11 on 3s, and John Wall added 25 points and six assists for the Wizards, who are 0-2, with both games at home.

Beal broke Washington’s franchise record for most 3-pointers in a career, surpassing Gilbert Arenas’ previous mark of 868 by making his 869th with a little more than 4½ minutes left in the game. Less than a minute later, he made another 3, cutting Washington’s deficit to 106-101, then skipping down the court.

Moments after that, Beal was called for charging, and at the other end, Lowry sank a 3-pointer while falling into the lap of a front-row spectator. That put Toronto back ahead 109-101 with 3 minutes remaining.

Two more baskets by Lowry followed, and Fred VanVleet added a jumper that made it 115-11 with 14.6 seconds to go.

Brooks was sent to the locker room after a contentious sequence with about seven minutes to go.

Moments after Beal argued a call while on defense, he got incensed when he thought Toronto should have been whistled for a foul when Wall tumbled to the court on a drive to the basket. There was no call, though — except a technical foul on Beal.

Then Wall and Brooks got into it with the officials, resulting in Brooks’ ejection. Lowry made two free throws to boost the Raptors’ edge to 102-89.

This was a rematch from the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, when the Raptors were seeded No. 1 and eliminated the No. 8 Wizards in six games.

While Washington largely relies on the same core of players, it so far has not been able to suit up its most significant offseason acquisition, center Dwight Howard, who missed all of training camp and the preseason and has sat out the team’s first two games with a sore backside. Ian Mahinmi started at center and did not exactly distinguish himself, shooting 0 for 3 and accumulating more personal fouls (four) than points (two).

The Raptors, meanwhile, were without Leonard, who helped Toronto start 2-0 by averaging 27.5 points and 11 rebounds in his first two games with the club after arriving in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs. But he only played in nine games for San Antonio in 2017-18, missing most because of a quadriceps injury, and so coach Nick Nurse said it was best for his team’s top player to rest during Toronto’s third contest in four nights to open this season.

OG Anunoby started in place of Leonard and contributed 12 points — all in the first half.

TIP-INS

Raptors: Never trailed by more than five points. … Now 15-4 against the Wizards over the last five years. … Toronto has six pairs of back-to-backs this season, one fewer than a year ago, when it went 9-5 in those games.

Wizards: After not taking a single 3-point shot in Game 1 despite being under orders to let it fly from beyond the arc this season, Otto Porter Jr. hoisted three attempts in the first four minutes Saturday. He went 0 for 3 on those, but wound up 2 for 7 on 3s. … Brooks said he didn’t speak to his team at all about having lost its playoff series against Toronto last season. “I have not mentioned it one time to the guys,” Brooks said. “What does it really mean? I don’t know.”

Raptors: Host Charlotte on Monday.

Wizards: At Portland on Monday, opening a five-game road trip against Western Conference teams.

European Leagues urge UEFA to make Champions League fairer

FRANKFURT, Germany — The European Leagues group has urged UEFA to allocate club competition entries and billions in Champions League prize money more fairly.

The proposal on Friday includes reversing changes made this season giving four guaranteed Champions League entries to Spain, England, Italy, and Germany, plus more guaranteed prize money to storied clubs with European titles dating back decades.

The 28-nation leagues group wants its ideas to feed into UEFA plans for a new competition in 2021.

UEFA has suggested 32-team group stages in the Champions League, Europa League, and an unnamed third event.

European Leagues says fairer shares of prize money and solidarity payments are needed to help competitions stay competitive.

Leagues also want weekends protected for domestic competitions, prohibiting Champions League games except the Saturday final.

Davis shines as Pelicans rout Rockets in season opener

Anthony Davis scored 32 points and Elfrid Payton finished with a triple double as the New Orleans Pelicans got their NBA season off to a roaring start by clobbering the Houston Rockets 131-112 on Wednesday.

Davis also had 16 rebounds and eight assists and Payton finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Pelicans, who led wire-to-wire.

“I am just taking what the defense gives me,” said Davis. “It is only game one. It is a good win but we still got a lot of work to do.

“To come out with a win against a team like that after the season they had and coming off the season we had, we wanted to come out and set a tempo.”

The Pelicans’ dominating win in front of a crowd of 18,000 at Toyota Center arena in Texas was one of 11 games in the first full night of the 2018-19 NBA season.

League Most Valuable Player James Harden flirted with a triple double, finishing with 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Rockets failed to match New Orleans’ season-opening intensity, especially on defense.

Nikola Mirotic delivered 30 points and 10 rebounds in the blowout as the Pelicans led by as many as 29 points.

Payton and Julius Randle were the two biggest additions in the offseason. And with DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo moving to other teams, the Pelicans are going to have to develop a new personality this season.

“We are not going to shoot the ball this well every night but tonight we did a great job imposing our will on defense which led to a lot of fast break opportunities,” said Davis. “We executed our game plan to the T. When we play like this we will be tough to beat.”

Many thought the Pelicans’ 2017-18 season was done when Cousins went down in mid-season with an Achilles injury. New Orleans rallied together and swept Portland in the first round of the playoffs.

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni expected more on opening night from his experienced squad. Houston was the most prolific three-point shooting team in the NBA last season when they finished with a franchise record 65-17 win-loss record.

They took the NBA by storm and many consider them a legitimate threat this year to dethrone the Golden State Warriors.

“It is the first game of 82. We will right the ship today, tomorrow, and the next day,” said D’Antoni.

“We kind of let go of the rope at the end of the first half. We obviously have some things to work on. We’ve got to get our legs and then go after it.”

Eric Gordon scored a team-high 21 points. Chris Paul and PJ Tucker had 19 points each for the Rockets, who are trying to replace outgoing defensive specialists Trevor Ariza and Mbah a Moute with aging veteran Carmelo Anthony and journeyman James Ennis.

Reserve Anthony, who bristled in the past about the idea of having to come off the bench, finished with nine points on three of 10 shooting in 27 minutes of playing time.

Prince Harry and Meghan start Aussie tour with baby gifts

SYDNEY — A beaming Duke and Duchess of Sussex thrilled thousands of fans outside the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday during their first meeting with the general public since the former Meghan Markle’s newly announced pregnancy.

Prince Harry and Meghan spent longer than the 20 minutes allocated in their schedule to speak to and shake hands with as many well-wishers as possible. Meghan, wearing a beige trench coat over a sleeveless cream dress by Australian designer Karen Gee, accepted cards and flowers from an enthusiastic crowd.

The news of the pregnancy was announced after the couple arrived in Sydney on Monday and 15 hours before their first public appearance. The two are on a 16-day tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand that their Kensington Palace staff said would not be altered despite confirmation that the American former actress is pregnant.

Among those taken by surprise by the announcement were their Sydney hosts, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Lynne Cosgrove. The governor-general, who represents Queen Elizabeth II, Australia’s head of state and Harry’s grandmother, sent staff to hastily buy a toy kangaroo with a joey in its pouch and a tiny pair of Australian sheep skin boots for their pregnant guest.

“Here’s your first gift for the nursery,” the governor-general told the couple during a welcome ceremony at his official residence, Admiralty House.

“Thank you, that’s so sweet,” Meghan said as she received the toy.

The pregnancy has made front-page news across Australia.

The Sydney Morning Herald ran the headline: “A smooth ride to Sydney, but royals reveal bump on the way.”

Darwin’s irreverent NT News chose the headline: “Ginger Pregs” — a play on a long-running Australian comic strip about a mischievous red-head boy called “Ginger Meggs.”

Outside the Opera House on Tuesday, Harry lingered longest with war widow Daphne Dunne, 98, whom he hugged as they chatted.

It was the third time that they had met since Harry’s eye caught sight of a Victoria Cross medal on her chest during a Sydney visit in 2015. She explained that her first husband Albert Chowne had been given the highest award in the British honors system after he died in Papua New Guinea in 1945.

This time, Meghan joined Harry in greeting the Dunne, who admires the prince’s work with veterans.
“Oh my goodness, is this Daphne?” Meghan asked.

Dunne later said Meghan told her “she had heard all about me; she’s so beautiful.”

“I wished them well with the baby on the way and said this is what Harry has been waiting for so long,” Dunne added.
Before Megan donned her coat, her tight-fitting dress barely revealed a bump as they were welcomed at the first event of the day at the Sydney Harbor-side mansion where the two are staying.

The main focus of that engagement was to meet Invictus Games representatives from the 18 countries competing in the event that starts Saturday. The sporting event, founded by Harry in 2014, gives sick and injured military personnel and veterans the opportunity to compete in sports such as wheelchair basketball.

Several of the representatives congratulated the couple on their baby news. Meghan replied: “Thank you so much. We are very excited.”

The couple later traveled by boat to Taronga Park Zoo where they opened a research center and met two 10-month old koalas that had been named after them.

They watched an indigenous dance company rehearse inside the Opera House before meeting the public.

The announcement of the pregnancy confirms weeks of speculation from royal watchers about why Meghan was not joining Harry on his Sydney Harbor Bridge climb set for Friday.

Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37 — along with Prince William and his wife, Kate, the duchess of Cambridge — have stepped to the fore in the last year as the 92-year-old queen slightly reduces her public schedule. MKH

Google expands real-time translations to all ‘assistant-optimized headphones’

This past week Google updated the Pixel Buds Help page to quietly announce that real-time Google Translate is now available on all headphones that support Google Assistant.

Previously the capability of Google Translate to follow a live conversation and relay the translation directly to someone via headphones was only supported on Pixel Buds through Pixel phones. However on Friday, as spotted by DroidLife, Google updated the Pixel Buds support page to say, “Google Translate is available on all Assistant-optimized headphones and Android phones.”

This means that if you’re an owner of headphones that use Google Assistant, like the Bose QuietComfort 35 II or Sony 1000XM2 over-the-ear wireless headphones, you can utilize this feature.

With other companies developing headphones that support Translate, like the LG Tone SE neckbuds which arrived back in August, this was a natural step for Google to expand. Live translations are no longer Pixel or neckbud exclusive. AB

Power switched off in N. California amid wild fire fears

SAN FRANCISCO— Northern California’s biggest utility has taken the unprecedented step of cutting electricity for tens of thousands of customers in an attempt to prevent wildfires amid rising winds and official warnings on Monday of extreme fire danger.

Pacific Gas & Electric began turning off the lights in California’s wine country north of San Francisco and Sierra Nevada foothills east of Sacramento Sunday night. The utility said at least 87,000 customers had their power turned off and that more could be put in the dark depending on the weather.

classes and PG&E said it expected to restore power Monday night to most affected customers — though some residents won’t get their electricity back until Tuesday.

“We know how much our customers rely on electric service, and we have made the decision to turn off power as a last resort given the extreme fire danger conditions these communities are experiencing,” PG&E spokesman Pat Hogan said.

PG&E earlier announced its plan to shut power preemptively after authorities blamed its power lines for sparking some of California’s most destructive wildfires.

The utility faces payments of billions of dollars in damages and has sought to limit its wildfire liability in the courts and the state Legislature.

The National Weather Service warned of extreme fire danger throughout the state. Utilities in Southern California also said Monday that they were considering shutting power to their customers, though those utilities said they didn’t know how many people could be affected.

The weather service predicted winds gusting to 55 mph (89 kph) in the Sierra foothills about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Sacramento. High winds were also expected in the state’s wine country about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of San Francisco. Forecasters warned that the high winds and low humidity created ideal conditions for wildfires to sweep over parched areas with drought-dried vegetation that serves as tinder for wildfires.

Strong wind gusts also swept many areas of Southern California early Monday with the arrival of the first fall Santa Ana winds, which are hot, sustained winds that blow out of the state’s desert-like region in the east to the ocean.

Southern California Edison spokesman David Song said about 32,000 of its 5 million customers were experiencing early morning power outages, but no public safety power shutdowns by the utility had been put into effect. Song said the utility is investigating the cause of the outages but that high winds were a possibility.

Healthy Celtics set to make noise in NBA Eastern Conference

The Boston Celtics — with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward back from injury and youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum maturing all the time — are tipped for big things in an NBA Eastern Conference now devoid of LeBron James.

James and the Cavaliers denied the injury-hit Celtics in game seven of the Eastern Conference finals last season, but a full-strength Boston squad has caught the attention of many — including Klay Thompson of the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors.

“I like the team out East in Boston,” Thompson said in pre-season musings on who might pose the biggest threat to a Warriors title three-peat. “I think that they are going to be a team to reckon with.”

Celtics guard Irving thinks so, too.

“Can we beat Golden State in a seven-game series? Yes,” says Irving. “Because of who we have and what we’re establishing here, not just for this season but hopefully for the next few years — something that’s pretty special.”

Irving missed the last 15 games of the regular season and the playoffs, but the former Cavaliers star says now that he’s healthy, his prior experience against the Warriors could help put the Celtics over the top if they come up against the reigning champs.

He admits that “the whole league is on notice” when it comes to the Warriors’ aim of achieving a fourth title in five years.

“But there’s one factor that they’re aware of and I’m aware of and that’s that I’ve seen them up close. I know what it takes.”

As the season approached, Irving indicated he didn’t want his impending free agency in 2019 to detract from the Celtics’ more immediate goals.

“I believe Boston is the place for me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge this year.”

Aiding that challenge will be Hayward, who missed 81 games after frightening ankle and leg injuries in last year’s season-opener.

“It’s scary to think about some of the opportunities we’re going to have going forward,” Irving said.

Hayward says last season’s adversity strengthened the Celtics, with Tatum, Brown and Terry Rozier rising to the occasion.

“There’s going to be situations where somebody is going to get hurt again, somebody’s going to be sick, somebody’s going to be having a bad game as it happens every year for every team,” he said. “To have so many guys that we can rely on, that can go get a bucket, that can go get a big-time stop — that’s huge for us as a team.”

Darren Criss gushes about Bradley Cooper

In a lengthy Instagram caption, Darren Criss expressed his admiration for actor-director Bradley Cooper, who was with him in a photo. The ex-“Glee” actor just watched Cooper’s directorial debut, “A Star is Born,” which also stars Lady Gaga.

“The sheer feat of what Bradley Cooper pulled off with [‘A Star is Born’], to me, [is] breathtaking,” Criss said. “Movie musicals have about a million booby traps set for filmmakers to get their movies totally screwed up by. They are f**king hard to [make]. There’s a reason … why they’re such a divisive category of film.

“But, I gotta say, I really think Bradley nailed it across the board: Superb directing, thoughtful writing, a grounded and compelling performance, solid songwriting, committed singing and playing,” gushed Criss, who won a best actor Emmy for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” last month.

He added that he “wasn’t surprised” but was “nonetheless deeply impressed” by Cooper’s handiwork. He recalled, “Upon seeing him right after [watching] the film—man, I was so blown away … I kinda lost my composure and started talking like someone I didn’t know. I believe the phenomenon is called being ‘starstruck.’ Boy, was I ever.”

Criss, ending his post, expressed gratitude, and described his fellow actor as “a total mother-f**kin’ force and a true artist.” —OLIVER PULUMBARIT

Expectations rise as Giannis, Bucks move into new arena

MILWAUKEE  — In his never-ending quest to improve, Giannis Antetokounmpo connected in the offseason with one of the NBA’s retired greats.

No way was the Milwaukee Bucks star going to be late for a summer workout with Kobe Bryant.

But showing up three hours early? That sends a message.

It’s all part of an effort by Antetokounmpo to help get the Bucks take another step in the postseason.

“I just wanted to show him I’m not here to mess around … I’m here to get better, simple as that. I think he understood that,” Antetokounmpo said. “It was an amazing day. It was a dream working out with Kobe.”

Expectations are on the rise in Milwaukee after three first-round exits over the last four seasons. The Bucks are moving into a new downtown arena, the Fiserv Forum, and new coach Mike Budenholzer has experience winning playoff series.

The Bucks hope they’ll be able to get a top-four seed. Whatever the case, they believe they have the talent to get out of the first round.

It’s just the type of growth that the ownership group envisioned after buying the team in 2014.

“When you look at what’s happened, every year has gotten better. Look, there are a lot of expectations on us … from the fans, from the team, from the coaching staff,” co-owner Marc Lasry said. “I think our goal is you want to keep on evolving and you want to keep on getting better.”

SPACING IT OUT

Boxes outlined in blue tape lined spots around the 3-point line of the Bucks’ practice court on the first day of training camp, a sign of one of Budenholzer’s philosophical priorities. He wants his team to shoot 3s.

The hope is that proper spacing also helps open more 1-on-1 opportunities for Antetokounmpo to do what he does best: get to the lane for a dunk or a foul call. The Greek star also has the ability to dish to a teammate for an open shot, too.

“I think it’s the best thing for Giannis to use his ability to just beat people 1-on-1,” forward Ersan Ilyasova said. “That’s why we try to give him more space and be in those blue boxes.”

GET BACK

The offensive philosophy goes hand-in-hand with the focus on transition defense at camp. A missed 3 means the Bucks need to get back quickly to prevent a quick bucket by the opponent.

“That’s where your defense starts. If you’re not good in transition, then you’re probably not going to be good, or you’re going to be taking it out of the net and playing a lot of offense,” Budenholzer said.

AT THE CORE

Antetokounmpo is still only 23, but he’s entering his sixth season in the NBA. In his seventh year in the league, Khris Middleton is coming off his first season in which he averaged more than 20 points while playing all 82 regular-season games. Point guard Eric Bledsoe is going into his first full season with the Bucks after being acquired in November in a trade with the Phoenix Suns. Both Middleton and Bledsoe are going into the last years of their contracts, though Middleton does have an option in 2019.

ON GUARD

Third-year player Malcolm Brogdon is healthy again after missing much of last season with a quad injury, returning just in time for the first-round playoff loss to Boston. The absence of the 2017 NBA rookie of the year deprived the Bucks of one of their best two-way players. Expected to start in the backcourt next to Bledsoe, Brogdon can hit 3s and handle the ball. He also offers a fearless presence in driving to the rim.

BIG SIGNINGS

The Bucks’ biggest offseason addition was the hiring of Budenholzer. General manager Jon Horst made less splashy moves in free agency with the signings of Ilyasova and 7-foot center Brook Lopez, though their additions could be just as important. Drafted by the Bucks in 2005, the 6-foot-10 Ilyasova is in his third career stint with Milwaukee. Lopez, an 11-year veteran, figures to start at center. Both will be asked to contribute from the perimeter.

‘Finally clicked’: Naomi Osaka says better focus behind stellar run

Her chopstick skills might not be the best but Naomi Osaka says an improvement in her focus is behind a run of success that culminated in winning the US Open.

The 20-year-old, who stunned Serena Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam last month, was devastating against 10th seed Julia Goerges of Germany on Thursday, winning 6-1, 6-2 in 65 minutes to speed into the China Open quarter-finals.

Osaka, the eighth seed in Beijing, similarly thrashed unseeded American Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 in the previous round and is showcasing the ruthlessness that saw her beat Williams in a controversial New York final.

The Japanese will face home hope Zhang Shuai in the last eight in the Chinese capital after Zhang pulled off a shock in defeating three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber.

China Open organizers have had the players competing in a “chopstick challenge” and Zhang and the German Kerber are currently winning.

Told that she was well behind both with her score, Osaka joked: “We’re not talking about that.

“Come on, with Shuai, let’s face it… But the thing is, I hold chopsticks in a weird way anyways.”

Turning more serious, the world number six, said: “On the court I have to think ‘focus’ because it’s not something that’s natural to me.

“It’s something that I’ve been working on throughout this whole year and I think it finally clicked, or at least it’s more consistent.”

Osaka, who appears increasingly at ease with the media, joking and chatting freely, said that she had also brought more consistency to her game.

“Not so many unforced errors (compared to a year ago). I’m not sure how many I hit today, but sometimes last year I think I was hitting a lot.”

Osaka meets unseeded Zhang next after the Chinese world number 45 emerged from a see-saw battle with third seed Kerber.

Zhang, 29, grabbed the first set 6-1, before reigning Wimbledon champion Kerber fought back to win the second 6-2.

Zhang stepped up a gear in the decider, taking the set with a comprehensive 6-0 to thrill the home crowd.

Kerber said that she had been troubled by a problem with her right knee, but refused to blame that for the defeat.

“I was not feeling the best at the beginning of the match, but then I was playing better and better,” said the 30-year-old.

“At the end she played a good third set — she took her chances and played a really solid match.”

WATCH: Lenovo’s foldable phone prototype surfaces

Why fold a phone when you could just wear one like a watch? In the midst of the folding smartphone race, Lenovo takes the cake with a video showing a bendable CPlus model that you can roll around your wrist and suggests that we should soon know more about the phone.

Lenovo’s bending smartphone, which first made its appearance in concept form at the Lenovo Tech World Conference in 2016, is making its way back; this time without cracking. The company shared a 10-second video captioned, “We are just so terribly good. It’s time to show off. We’ll see you in October,” on their Weibo account, one of the most popular microblogging platforms in China.

You can see the new and improved phone’s ability to bend with the widgets adjusting in real-time to more appropriately display the content based on its new shape.

Gadget lovers have been waiting for more news about this innovative phone for two years and, according to the video caption, the phone is right around the corner, but maybe not yet for purchase, though. But will it be worth the hype? The company itself posted a video with unexplained dark spots along the right edge that appear to be due to wear and tear, but then again, maybe they’re intentional.

But is it practical? Samsung seems to think that folding with a kind of hinge mechanism is the way to go instead when they told CNBC earlier in September that they will be releasing the Galaxy X, a flip-phone style smartphone, by the end of this year.

And Samsung is not alone in the folding screen world. Over this year and the next, you can expect to see variants of the foldable screen from Motorola (the Razr may be on its way back), LG and Huawei, some folding like a book and others like the classic flip phone. JB

Ariana begs for ‘one OK day’

In a recent series of tweets, Ariana Grande hinted that things weren’t going too well in her life at the moment. “Can I have one OK day? Just one. Please. I’m so tired. Please,” she wrote.

The 25-year-old pop star has reportedly been experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, which was caused by last year’s terror attack at her Manchester concert. She’s also coping with the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.

Ariana said that “it has been a tough month,” and apologized for getting everyone worried.

“I’m trying to get my work done and get back to normal,” she wrote. “And it’s hard and I’m only human.”

It has also been confirmed that the singer wouldn’t be touring anytime soon, so she could take a break. —ALLAN POLICARPIO

Golden Knights continue healing process for Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — With the city reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland delivered an emotional 58-second speech last October that continues to echo through Las Vegas today.

Engelland’s address came days after the Oct. 1 massacre during a pregame ceremony honoring victims and first responders. It ended with the reassurances: “We’ll do everything we can to help you and our city heal. We are Vegas strong.”

As the one-year anniversary of the massacre on the Las Vegas Strip that left 58 dead approaches, Vegas’ beloved NHL team remains very much a part of the healing process, true to Engelland’s words.

“Anything like that happens, you definitely want to keep helping the process of the healing,” Engelland said following a recent preseason game as the Knights prepared for their second season. “I think last year was a good stepping stone and I think we can still do more this year.”

The Golden Knights, who became a rallying point for many residents after the shooting, will make their way around town Monday, with several players and team personnel visiting command and dispatch centers for police and other first responders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for a blood drive.

“Being from here, you want to do as much as you can for the community you call home,” Engelland said. “I think every guy in this room wants to do what they can for Las Vegas. A lot of guys are going to be calling this home for a long time. We got a lot of great leaders in here that step up and do a lot of good things. We just try to help each other out and do whatever we can for the community.”

Lifelong Vegas resident Tina Cartwright, who was at the outdoor concert when the gunman opened fire from a room in the Mandalay Bay casino-resort, said it took a long time for her to attend a crowded event after the shooting, during which she remembers running her life. It was a Golden Knights game that brought her back to enjoying her social life.

“They gave me hope, because I didn’t want to go out in crowds and put myself in that position where I wasn’t close to an exit,” said Cartwright, 47. “I didn’t want to go out right away, so they were an immediate part of the healing process. I have friends who still won’t go to concerts or big gatherings, and I think the longer you wait it can be detrimental. They just gave us something to look forward to in times that were dark.”

Knights newcomer Max Pacioretty was with the Montreal Canadiens last season but said he remembers the shooting vividly. He said it was tough to watch on television. But he said watching the Knights from afar as they helped with the recovery process helped him see how special the team had become to the community.

They had become much more than the town’s first major sports franchise, and much more than a team embarking on an inaugural campaign that would end in the Stanley Cup Final.

“It’s something I feel that this community will never forget, and it’s a big reason why there’s such good chemistry between the fans and the city and this team,” Pacioretty said. “I feel as if people didn’t really know what to expect, what type of people and human beings hockey players are in a general spectrum. But I think they learned real quick. As soon as they knew that they were going to have to help this community overcome what they were going through, you saw them step up to the occasion right away.”

During each home game last season, the Golden Knights recognized the Vegas Strong Hero of the Game, a first responder or citizen who risked his or her own life during the shooting to aid others. Engelland would talk to those heroes after the games.

In September, Engelland and his family announced the Vegas Born Heroes Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to publicly recognize and reward charities and community members who consistently and selflessly help others to benefit the city.

“It’s been an honor to honor those people who sacrificed their lives or made it out of there,” Engelland said. “We still talk to a lot of them here and there. We wanted to start our foundation and kind of branch a little bit away from that but not completely. Those first responders, we wanted to grow it and make it the heroes around Las Vegas that do the little things that might go unnoticed.”

Unnoticed, until now.
