Smartphone tool helps users keep social distance
SAN FRANCISCO — Smartphone users have a new way to keep their distance – a tool that lets them know when people are getting closer than pandemic guidelines recommend.
The Google-developed Sodar tool available this week taps into Android smartphone cameras to put users in the center of a white circle with a radius of about two meters, or 6.5 feet.
The perimeter, determined based on pandemic social distancing guidelines, is made using the same kind of augmented reality technology in smartphone games such as Pokemon Go.
Circles superimposed on surroundings move with users, keeping smartphones in the center. Users get a visual warning when they are within the potentially hazardous radius.
Sodar works through Google-made Chrome browsers on Android smartphones that support augmented reality, according to the California-based internet firm.
“This experiment uses (the application program interface) WebXR to visualize 2-meter social-distancing guidelines in your environment,” a message at the website said.
The tool came out of an “Experiments With Google” project on technology hacks to help people cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

Oppo continues to push envelope on smartphone technology
In an era of increasingly sophisticated smartphones, being good enough is simply not good enough.
This is why leading smartphone brand OPPO continues to churn out innovative technology that empowers the restless and relentless Filipinos, whose thirst for the best-among-the-best smartphone in the market is ever evident.
Revolutionary smartphone
OPPO’s latest revolutionary flagship smartphone, the Find X2 series was launched globally via livestream in early March, set to be a showcase of the brand’s best technologies yet, as well as a preview of other innovations the brand has in store for everyone.
The OPPO Find X2 Pro features the most advanced screen display OPPO has ever developed, with emphasis on resolution, screen refresh rate, color, and high dynamic range. The Find X2 Pro is the next generation flagship offering of OPPO that promises an all-round powerful camera experience, as well as battery life.
The device is equipped with Grade A screen quality through the 120Hz QHD+ AMOLED screen, an all-round ultra-vision-camera system, the industry’s fastest 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 flash charging technology, and the most advanced mobile platform—the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. The Find X2 Pro continues OPPO’s line of smartphones with amazing camera. It is equipped with a triple-camera combination, 48MP wide-angle lens + 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens + 13MP telephoto lens, whilst supporting 10x hybrid zoom. It uses the Sony IMX689 which has the largest sensor size among all 48MP mobile camera sensors in the industry and Dolby Atmos equipped speakers.
“We are very excited to finally unveil our latest flagship phone Find X2 Pro in the Philippines. We believe that it perfectly matches the fast-paced and highly digital lifestyle of the modern Filipino industry leaders. Its revolutionary features were carefully crafted for years before we released them in public to ensure that we’re able to offer a full and satisfying smartphone experience that can keep up with the ever-demanding lifestyle of its target consumers,” shares Raymond Xia, Marketing Head of OPPO Philippines.
The Future of Intelligent Connectivity
Over the years, OPPO has boosted its multi-billion-dollar R&D facilities across key locations in the world. This ensures that the latest cutting edge technology is always at the hands—quite literally—of its customers around the world.
With nearly 100 million active users in the APAC region, OPPO remains committed to evolve into an R&D-centric technology company. In fact, in the next three years, the brand is set to invest over $7 billion in R&D initiatives, as it continues to focus on developing state-of-the-art technologies such as 5G, 6G, AI, AR, and big data.
“In line with the announcement made during the OPPO APAC Hub launch in Malaysia, we are already evolving beyond being a smartphone company. We have recently expanded our portfolio in the IoT space for a more comprehensive personal technology experience,” said Xia.
During the recent Find X2 series online launch, OPPO announced Find X2 series 5G smartphone globally as well as its latest product innovation on smart devices: the OPPO 5G CPE Omni and OPPO Watch. Adding to its portfolio beyond its smartphone product line, plus the other IoT products that were introduced during the OPPO APAC Hub launch in Malaysia such as the OPPO Enco Free, AR Glass, and VR.
Additionally, OPPO published a whitepaper on intelligent connectivity at the OPPO INNO DAY last December 2019, in partnership with market analytics firm IHS Markit. Titled “Intelligent Connectivity: Unleashing opportunities with the power of 5G, AI, and cloud,” the whitepaper aims to enable the industry to establish a more open and collaborative understanding of the ecosystem, better informing and guiding the sustainable development of intelligent connectivity in the future. The 5G era will be driven by intelligent connectivity powered by AI, cloud, edge computing, and IoT, according to the whitepaper.
OPPO also reiterates its commitment to being a global pioneer of 5G, especially because the coming 5G era is expected to generate 170 million potential shipment units for global smartphone markets. The possibilities of 5G is immense—almost instantaneous download speeds, higher resolution video, and next-level AR and VR capabilities.

Samsung to release Galaxy S20, Galaxy Fold 2 on Feb. 11
SEOUL — Samsung Electronics will release the sequel to the Galaxy S10 at an event next month.
In an invitation sent to media on Sunday, the Korean tech giant said it “will unveil new, innovative devices that will shape the next decade of mobile experiences. The reveal will take place at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event in San Francisco at 11 a.m. on February 11.”
Samsung is expected to unveil Galaxy S20, the next iteration in the Galaxy S series, and Galaxy Fold 2, the successor to the Galaxy Fold.
The invitation shows two squares instead of the letter “a” in the spelling of Galaxy. The first rectangular shape seems to imply the Galaxy S20 while the second appears to hint that the next Galaxy Fold is folded in half in a clamshell design.
Industry watchers say while the Galaxy Fold could be used like a tablet by expanding the screen, the next product will increase portability by folding the screen in half.

NEX 3: The next status symbol of power and luxurious technology
Like designer bags, Swiss watches, and bespoke suits, smartphones have become not just a necessity, but a symbol of sophistication, especially among individuals who have a discerning taste for luxurious items.
And the NEX 3, the latest flagship model in Vivo’s high-end NEX series, may perhaps be the next status symbol not only of elegance but of premium technology, owing to its next-generation innovations and trendsetting design that gives a preview of the “device of the future”.
Built for those who demand the best smartphone experience, the NEX 3 harnesses the power of the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855+ and 8GB RAM/128GB ROM to deliver faster cutting-edge performance and smoother multitasking capabilities.
Compared to other handsets in its price range, the Vivo NEX 3 might exude simplicity but it looks totally sophisticated and elegant with its Glowing Night-colored aluminum alloy unibody design that is rendered seamless with a notch-less and bezel-less architecture.
The NEX 3 also cleverly hid physical power and volume buttons from sight by using an X-axis Haptic Vibration motor and Touch Sense technology, whereby the unit uses haptic feedback to simulate sense of touch. In-Display Fingerprint Scanning also allows users to step into their mobile world both instantly and safely.
Matching the impressive style of its users, the NEX 3 also makes a remarkable statement with the world’s first AMOLED Waterfall FullView™ Display, stretching and curving the smartphone screen along its sides to offer its discriminating users broader, borderless views.
For a breathtaking visual experience, the NEX 3 also has 6.89-inch display with an incredible 99.6% screen-to-body ratio. At the back, a Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6, protects the NEX 3 from multiple drops, even at greater heights.
For those who not only go for amazing aesthetics but also top-notch performance, the NEX 3 sports an array of optics bannered by a 64-megapixel main camera, 13MP wide-angle camera and a 13MP telescopic camera that makes for premier photo-shooting experience as it makes “super HD clarity” as the norm for all photos. At the front, a 16MP Elevating Front Camera also paves the way for NEX 3’s perfect FullView™ Display.

Google Pixel 4: What we know so far
With the Pixel 4 series launch likely taking place next month, rumors and leaks about the flagship series are arriving at record pace.
It’s been nearly a year since Google launched the Pixel 3 flagship smartphone series, which means that the next generation’s reveal is imminent. Not only have rumors been circulating about the anticipated devices, but leaked images and videos allegedly of the official handsets have also emerged. The following is a collection of the most recent speculations about Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 series.
On Wednesday, the YouTube channels AnhEm TV and Rabbit TV offered us the most comprehensive looks of what is alleged to be the Pixel 4 lineup yet by posting videos 6.5 and 14 minutes long, respectively, of the largest model in the series, the Pixel 4 XL.
Late last week, 9to5Google and XDA Developers revealed information about the series’ purported camera capabilities. The former spoke with sources that claimed a new Motion Mode will help owners take clearer action shots and an improved Night Mode will improve on the already impressive shots taken in low lighting. XDA Developers, on the other hand, reported that the Pixel 4 camera with be able to zoom 8x.
Also last week, 9to5Google separately reported that the “Google Assistant on Pixel 4 will be able to step in for you while you’re on hold during a phone call.” Though the precise functioning was not outlined by the source, they did state that Google will let you know when a human being is back on the line.
A few days earlier, MySmartPrice spotted an FCC listing revealing that four Pixel 4 devices are in the works; while three are expected to be follow-up models of the 3, 3XL, and budget-friendly 3a, the fourth one is unknown. The media suspects that it is a second successor to the Pixel 3a.
If the rumors and leaks continue to flourish like they did ahead of the Pixel 3 series launch, the entire lineup and its respective model specs could be completely revealed in no time. JB

Millennial Money: How to Outsmart Scammers
Your smartphone is your confidante, your hand-held connection to the world and one of your biggest vulnerabilities. Scammers can take advantage of day-to-day tasks that seem innocuous, like checking a bank balance or charging a phone at a public USB port, to exploit personal information for their profit.
To keep that data safe, start by understanding the threats you face. Your phone has three main areas of vulnerability: its hardware, it’s software and your phone number. Each carries a risk, and there are steps you can take to mitigate them.
HARDWARE VULNERABILITY
A four-digit passcode alone isn’t enough to secure your phone’s hardware from intruders.
One weakness comes from the charging port. Think twice before plugging into a public USB jack for a quick charge at a cafe or airport.
“Any time you’re using a mobile port, you can be vulnerable to viruses or malware if you’re sharing it with other people who are plugging in their devices,” says Lisa Schifferle, ID theft program manager at the Federal Trade Commission.
Using a public charging port at an airport is like “finding a toothbrush on the side of the road and deciding to stick it in your mouth” Caleb Barlow, vice president of X-Force Threat Intelligence at IBM Security, recently told Forbes.
Hackers can modify these ports to install malevolent software, aka malware, on your phone. Once installed, it can transfer your phone’s data to hackers. The hacked USB ports can also directly suck up your phone’s information. To avoid the risk, use your USB cord with your own charging block that can plug into a standard electrical outlet, or use an external battery pack.
For daily security, go beyond the four-digit passcode if possible, says Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at the cybersecurity company McAfee. “Passcodes aren’t as effective as biometrics, like fingerprint readers or facial recognition software, because people can do shoulder surfing to see your passcode and get into your phone” if they steal it.
SOFTWARE AND NETWORK RISKS
Scammers can target your personal information using unsecured wireless networks and software vulnerabilities.
NETWORK RISKS: Be wary of public Wi-Fi networks.
“We advise against using public Wi-Fi, but if you’re going to use it, avoid logging in to sensitive accounts,” says Allen Spence, director of product leadership at IDShield, an identity theft protection company.
To protect yourself from inadvertently using insecure Wi-Fi networks, adjust your phone settings to avoid auto-connecting to Wi-Fi.
SOFTWARE: Hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in the phone software. Schifferle of the FTC suggests consumers routinely check for and download software updates for their phones because updates often include security patches.
PHONE NUMBER VULNERABILITIES
There are two common ways that scammers target your phone number: robocall scams and phone number theft.
ROBOCALLS: U.S. consumers fielded nearly 48 billion robocalls in 2018, according to an estimate from robocall blocking service YouMail. That was a 57% increase from 2017.
A common scam comes from supposed representatives of the Social Security Administration requesting you give your personal information or your benefits will be cut. If you get a call from a number you don’t recognize, don’t answer. That’s the best way to ensure you don’t get caught up in a phone scam. And know that government agencies like Social Security and the IRS won’t call you out of the blue seeking your personal information.
“You should never give personal info or money unless you have initiated the call,” Schifferle says. If you answer a call and realize it may be a scammer, hang up, she advises.
If you suspect your personal information was stolen by scammers, file a report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov.
PHONE NUMBER THEFT: Scammers are stealing phone numbers, which can leave you vulnerable to other forms of identity theft.
The scam is clever: A malevolent actor calls your cellphone carrier pretending to be you, and after confirming some key information such as your mother’s maiden name, transfers your phone number to their device. You may not find out this has happened until you go to make a call and find that your SIM card has been deactivated.
Because phone numbers are often used as security keys, hackers may be able to get into many other accounts once they have access to your phone account. Make it harder to penetrate by avoiding common security questions, Davis says. “When you set up your security questions and answers, make sure you’re using really challenging questions that are going to be hard to figure out.”

Samsung ditches headphone jack after jabs at jackless rivals
NEW YORK – Samsung executives have long poked fun at rivals for ditching the headphone jack in smartphones. With the new Galaxy Note 10, the company will now be doing exactly the same thing.
The Note 10, announced Wednesday, squeezes in more battery power and other goodies, but at the cost of the familiar old jack.
So now the company is doing an about-face and declaring that many people use wireless headphones anyway.
Samsung, which for years has pushed bigger and bigger displays, is also introducing a smaller version of the Note for those who think phones have just gotten too big.
The new Note models will come out Aug. 23. The main model is being called the Note 10 Plus and will have a display measuring 6.8 inches diagonally.
Though the display is bigger, the overall size is about the same as last year’s 6.4-inch Note 9. To accomplish that, Samsung shrank down even more of the bezel surrounding the display.
The smaller, 6.3-inch version will be called the Note 10 and will sell for almost $950, or $150 less than the Plus. It’s designed for those who want the Note’s signature stylus without its once-signature size.
“You hit a certain point where you can’t get much bigger without being physically too large to hold,” Technalysis Research analyst Bob O’Donnell said. “That’s the challenge they are running into.”
Hardware innovation in mobile devices has been slowing for years. Samsung is addressing that with a foldable model, with twice the display when unfolded. The Samsung Fold is coming in September after Samsung made a few design changes to address problems with reviewers’ phones breaking.
Apple is expected to release new iPhones next month. A version that works with next-generation 5G cellular networks isn’t expected. Samsung will have a 5G version of the Note 10 Plus starting at almost $1300.
The Note 10 Plus will have a 7.5% boost in battery capacity over the Note 9, though Samsung’s high-end phones have already been promising all-day battery life. Samsung made no references to the headphone jack during its 70-minute announcement event in New York.
Samsung officials told reporters separately that while the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack might seem small, every smidgeon of saved space can help extend battery life.
Samsung is including wired headphones that plug into the phone’s USB-C data and charging port. An adapter for other wired headphones is sold separately for $10. Apple and Google also have ditched the standard headphone jack.
But O’Donnell noted the irony: “If you guys gave everybody else grief for doing it, why are you doing it?”
Beyond that, the Note 10 phones introduce new stylus features, including the ability to flip through music and photo libraries by gesturing with the stylus in the air. The phones bring a wider-angle lens already found in the S10 and use software to make audio appear louder — and thus closer — in video recordings when zooming in.
And by connecting a Note 10 to a Windows or Mac computer with a USB cable, users can interact with phone apps there and drag and drop files between devices.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appeared briefly to expand on a partnership with Samsung. The collaboration includes giving Note users the ability to receive and respond to text messages and take phone calls from a Windows computer. Apple has long offered similar features, but only for its own devices such as the iPhone and Mac. /gsg

Huawei’s first devices powered by HongMeng OS said to launch in 2019
Since Huawei was put on the United States tech blacklist earlier this year, the Chinese company has been forced to look towards operating system alternatives to Google’s Android OS.
At the time of the blacklisting, the company already had its own operating system in development in case of such a situation. In fact, in May of this year, the operating system officially got a name, HongMeng OS.
According to China-based media outlet Global Times, a smartphone powered by HongMeng OS could hit the market as early as Q4 of this year. This device will allegedly be “targeting low- and medium-end markets” and will be priced at about $288.24 (over P14,900).
The very first devices to be powered by the Huawei operating system, however, will purportedly be Honor smart TVs, set to launch on Aug. 10.
As part of the company’s long-term plans for the OS, they intend to use HongMeng to power autonomous driving systems, remote medical services, and industrial control technology.
The first smartphone with HongMeng OS is expected to make its appearance with the Huawei Mate30 series when it launches in Q4 of this year. HM/NVG

LG reveals the G8S with touchless commands
South Korean manufacturer LG has released an alternative to its high-end G8 smartphone in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Latin America which is expected this summer.
The LG G8S, whose price tag has not yet been announced, is aimed at customers desiring “a more bespoke experience.”
The major differences between the LG G8S and the G8 are the size of the screen, with the G8S measuring 6.2 inches up from 6.1 inches, and the number of photosensors at the back. For the rest, it runs on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and 6 gigabytes of RAM and will come paired with 128 gigabytes of storage. The phone is also water and dust resistant (IP 68).
The LG G8S’s Z camera, which will be launched with the phone, integrates “Flight Time” (ToF) technology, offering the possibility of interacting with the phone via a particular set of gestures.
Dubbed as the Air Motion, this touchless interface allows users to undertake many actions without having to touch the screen. The idea is to be able to answer a call, take a photo or adjust playback volume on a favorite playlist with a simple movement. HM/JB

Huawei launches 3 new devices despite unpredictable future
Huawei unveiled three new devices in China on Friday, June 21, according to GizmoChina — the Nova 5, the Nova 5i and the Nova 5 Pro. While all are powered by some form of Android Pie, access could be limited.
Nova 5
The Nova 5 features a 6.39-inch OLED display, an in-display fingerprint scanner and is the first phone powered by the new Kirin 810 chipset. The front camera is housed inside a waterdrop-shaped notch, and the back is outfitted with a quad-camera set-up. It comes out of the box powering Android 9, but it is unknown if or when the device will lose access to updates.
The Nova 5 comes with 6 gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigabytes of storage, and will sell for 2,799 yuan or about $407 (almost P21,000). Pre-ordering opens Friday, June 28, with sales opening up on July 20.
Nova 5 Pro
While the Nova 5 Pro has the same display, camera set-up, battery and operating system as the Nova 5, it is equipped instead with the same chipset that powers the flagship P30 and Mate 20 smartphone series: the Kirin 980 processor.
The Nova 5 Pro comes with 8 gigabytes of RAM, up to 256 gigabytes of storage, and starts at 2,999 yuan or about $436 (around P22,000). It can be pre-ordered now and will officially go on sale on June 28.
Nova 5i
The Nova 5i, according to GizmoChina, is essentially a rebranded version of the mid-range P20 Lite device that was launched earlier this year. Instead of being powered by the Kirin 659 chipset, however, it uses the Kirin 710. The LCD display measures in at 6.4 inches and has a punch-out notch located in the top left corner.
Like the others in the series, the Nova 5i has a rear quad-camera set-up; in contrast to the rest of the lineup, though, the fingerprint scanner is on the back. The device uses a lower grade version of Android Pie.
The Nova 5i comes with 6 gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigabytes of storage, and starts at 1,999 yuan or about $291 (almost P15,000). The device is available for pre-order now with sales starting on June 28.
At this point, the Nova 5 Series is only expected to launch in China. RGA/JB

Samsung expands mid-tier phone range in US with 3 new devices
Since 2014 when the segment was launched, Samsung’s Galaxy A-series smartphones have been sold in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. On Tuesday, June 11, the company announced that three of the newest models in the mid-tier range will be coming to the United States starting this month.
Galaxy A50
Leading the incoming series is the Galaxy A50, a model with a 6.4-inch full HD AMOLED display, a tear-drop shaped notch, and an in-display fingerprint reader.
The most notable feature of the handset is the triple camera set-up on the rear consisting of a 5-megapixel depth camera, 25-megapixel main camera and 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Users will not only be able to take high-quality shots but also apply bokeh effects and optimize color tones and other settings thanks to an integrated scene optimizer.
With 512 gigabytes, the Galaxy A50 has a starting retail price of $349.99 (about P18,000).
Galaxy A20
Like the Galaxy A50, the A20 dons a 6.4-inch display but instead of the tear-drop shaped Infinity-U notch, the top edge of the screen features a V-shaped notch.
Only one camera can be found on the rear with 13 megapixels. The front camera, on the other hand, has an 8-megapixel selfie camera.
The Galaxy A20 has a starting retail price of $249.99 (almost P13,000).
Galaxy A10e
The Galaxy A10e has the smallest display of the trio measuring in at 5.83 inches. The single-camera on the back is 8 megapixels.
The Galaxy A10e has a starting retail price of $179.99 (about P9,000).
The Galaxy A50 will be the first to launch in the U.S. on Thursday, June 13. The release date of the other models has not yet been disclosed. HM/JB

World’s first 5G phone released in South Korea
SEOUL — Telecom giant Samsung Electronics on Friday released the Galaxy S10 5G, the world’s first available smartphone with built-in fifth-generation communications, as South Korea seeks to build a lead in the transformative technology.
On Wednesday the South became the first country to launch nationwide 5G services, with three superfast networks going live offering data speeds that allow users to download entire movies in less than a second.
Hours later US giant Verizon began commercial services in Chicago and Minneapolis, after rival AT&T made a 5G-based system available to selected users in parts of 12 cities in December.
South Korea’s three mobile carriers — SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus — held launch events across Seoul for the Galaxy S10 5G, whose base version costs 1.39 million won ($1,200).
Interactive virtual-reality displays and robot demonstrations were on show to tout the capabilities of the latest iteration of mobile internet speed, and new users were excited about the possibilities, especially live streaming of sports games and university lectures.
“I watch a lot of videos often, movies and lectures,” said buyer Shim Ji-hye, 38. “I hope faster speeds will help me manage my time better.”
Another user said he was most excited about virtual reality content — which includes games and even “celebrity VR dating” apps according to the country’s mobile carriers.
With 5G, said researcher Lee Sang-yoon, VR content “can be enjoyed in real time with no delay… I’ll be able to enjoy it in better resolution and speed”.
By Friday afternoon, 15,000 buyers had subscribed to the LG UPlus 5G service, and more than 10,000 to KT’s offer, the carriers said.
Figures were not immediately available from SK Telecom, the market leader.
Internet of Things
Before Friday’s roll-out of the Samsung phone, the 5G service had been restricted to a handful of specially selected users in South Korea.
Rival manufacturer LG is due to launch its V50 ThinQ, another 5G phone, in the South later this month, while in the US, Verizon’s network works with Lenovo’s Moto Z3 smartphone fitted with a special accessory.
Commercializing 5G gives South Korea the chance to build around the technology, which is crucial for the future development of devices such as autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things.
It is expected to bring about $565 billion in global economic benefits by 2034, according to the London-based Global System for Mobile Communications, an industry alliance.
The implications of the new technology have pitted Washington against Beijing — whose firms dominate 5G technology — in an increasingly bitter standoff.
The US has pressed its allies and major economies to avoid 5G solutions from Chinese-owned telecom giant Huawei, citing security risks that technological backdoors could give Beijing access to 5G-connected utilities and other components.
Chinese entities own a total of 3,400 5G patents — more than a third of the total, according to data analysis firm IPlytics — with 1,529 of those registered by Huawei.
South Korea comes next, with its companies holding 2,051 patents, while US firms have 1,368 together.
Neither KT nor SK Telecom use Huawei technology in their 5G networks, but it is a supplier to LG UPlus, the companies told AFP.

Apple opens new chapter amid weakening iPhone demand
SAN FRANCISCO — Apple hoped to offset slowing demand for iPhones by raising the prices of its most important product, but that strategy seems to have backfired after sales sagged during the holiday shopping season.
Results released Tuesday revealed the magnitude of the iPhone slump — a 15 percent drop in revenue from the previous year. That decline in Apple’s most profitable product caused Apple’s total earnings for the October-December quarter to dip slightly to $20 billion.
Now, CEO Tim Cook is grappling with his toughest challenge since replacing co-founder Steve Jobs 7 ½ years ago. Even as he tries to boost iPhone sales, Cook also must prove that Apple can still thrive even if demand doesn’t rebound.
It figures to be an uphill battle, given Apple’s stock has lost one-third of its value in less than four months, erasing about $370 billion in shareholder wealth.
Cook rattled Wall Street in early January by disclosing the company had missed its own revenue projections for the first time in 15 years. The last time that happened, the iPod was just beginning to transform Apple.
“This is the defining moment for Cook,” said Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives. “He has lost some credibility on Wall Street, so now he will have to do some handholding as the company enters this next chapter.”
The results for the October-December period were slightly above the expectations analysts lowered after Cook’s Jan. 2 warning. Besides the profit decline, Apple’s revenue fell 5 percent from the prior year to $84 billion.
It marked the first time in more than two years that Apple’s quarterly revenue has dropped from the past year. The erosion was caused by the decline of the iPhone, whose sales plunged to $52 billion, down by more than $9 billion from the previous year.
The past quarter’s letdown intensified the focus on Apple’s forecast for the opening three months of the year as investors try to get a better grasp on iPhone sales until the next models are released in autumn.
Apple predicted its revenue for the January-March period will range from $55 billion to $59 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had been anticipating revenue of about $59 billion.
Investors liked what they read and heard, helping Apple’s stock recoup some of their recent losses. The stock gained nearly 6 percent to $163.50 in extended trading after the report came out.
“We wouldn’t change our position with anyone’s,” Cook reassured analysts during a conference call reviewing the past quarter and the upcoming months.
The company didn’t forecast how many iPhones it will sell, something Apple has done since the product first hit the market in 2007 and transformed society, as well as technology.
Apple is no longer disclosing how many iPhones it shipped after the quarter is completed, a change that Cook announced in November. That unexpected move raised suspicions that Apple was trying to conceal a forthcoming slump in iPhone sales — fears that were realized during the holiday season.
Cook traces most of Apple’s iPhone problems to a weakening economy in China, the company’s second biggest market behind the U.S. The company is also facing tougher competition in China, where homegrown companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi have been winning over consumers in that country with smartphones that have many of the same features as iPhones at lower prices.
Although a trade war started by President Donald Trump last year has hurt China and potentially caused some consumers there to boycott U.S. products, many analysts believe the iPhone’s malaise stems from other issues too.
Among them are higher prices — Apple’s most expensive iPhone now costs $1,350 — for models that aren’t that much better than the previous generation, giving consumers little incentive to stop using the device they already own until it wears out. Apple also gave old iPhones new life last by offering to replace aging batteries for $29, a 70 percent discount.
“The upgrade cycle has extended, there is no doubt about that,” Cook conceded.
Apple is banking that investors will realize the company can still reap huge profits by selling various services on the 1.4 billion devices running on its software.
That’s one reason why Cook has been touting the robust growth of Apple’s division that collects commissions from paid apps, processes payments, and sells hardware warranty plans and music streaming subscriptions. Apple Music now has more than 50 million subscribers, second to Spotify’s 87 million streaming subscribers through September.
Apple is also preparing to launch a video streaming service to compete against Netflix, though Cook said he wasn’t ready to provide details Tuesday.
The company’s services revenue in the past quarter climbed 19 percent from the prior year to $10.9 billion — more than any other category besides the iPhone.

iPhone XI to feature long-distance 3D camera, says report
It’s no secret that the iPhone will get a radical upgrade in 2020 when Apple integrates 5G tech into the model, but what can we expect from the upcoming 2019 generation?
According to BloombergQuint, which was recently in contact with Sony, that company will be “boosting production of next-generation 3D sensors after getting interest from customers,” customers that include Apple Inc. In fact, Sony will be undergoing mass production in late summer to meet demands.
These new camera chips are expected to hugely impact mobile photography, gaming and phone user interface, and Sony hopes such tech will reinvigorate the slumping market.
Additionally, several rumors claim that Apple’s next flagship iPhone model will have three rear lenses that potentially have augmented reality functioning.
Apple will reportedly be using new camera features like these to draw their audience to the 2019 model, likely to be released in September, which will be difficult considering the already quickly growing anticipation for the 2020 generation.
In November, Fast Company noted Apple’s plans to release its first 5G iPhone in 2020 which will be powered by Intel’s 8161 5G modem chip, a release that may come a bit late considering some other phone giants’ first 5G devices are slated for the first half of 2019.
Samsung, Huawei and OnePlus all revealed plans to release their own 5G handsets early next year. JB

Apple lists price for iPhone XR repairs — and it hurts
Four days before its official launch, Apple has unveiled the price to repair an iPhone XR screen: $199 (over P10,600).
The iPhone XR repair costs seem expensive until you compare them to that of the iPhone X, XS and XS Max; then it seems like you’re getting a real bargain.
On Monday, the service pricing of the iPhone XR, which officially releases on Oct. 26, was added to the Apple site: screen repair and other damages will cost you $199 (over P10,600) and $399 (over P21,000), respectively. With the phone itself costing $749 (around P40,000), the damage repair could cost over half of what you paid in the first place, so it’s best to invest in a tough case and sturdy screen protector, especially since the Apple warranty doesn’t’ cover, “accidental damage or mishandling.”
To fix just the screen of the iPhone XS Max, you’ll have to drop over a hundred more than for the iPhone XR totaling $329 (nearly P18,000), and other damage repairs will cost you $599 (over P32,000). However, if you do have AppleCare+, a screen replacement for all iPhone models, the XR, XS Max, and everything else, will only cost $29 (around P1,500) and all other damages will total $99 (around P5,300). WATCH: Lenovo’s foldable phone prototype surfaces
Why fold a phone when you could just wear one like a watch? In the midst of the folding smartphone race, Lenovo takes the cake with a video showing a bendable CPlus model that you can roll around your wrist and suggests that we should soon know more about the phone.
Lenovo’s bending smartphone, which first made its appearance in concept form at the Lenovo Tech World Conference in 2016, is making its way back; this time without cracking. The company shared a 10-second video captioned, “We are just so terribly good. It’s time to show off. We’ll see you in October,” on their Weibo account, one of the most popular microblogging platforms in China.
You can see the new and improved phone’s ability to bend with the widgets adjusting in real-time to more appropriately display the content based on its new shape.
Gadget lovers have been waiting for more news about this innovative phone for two years and, according to the video caption, the phone is right around the corner, but maybe not yet for purchase, though. But will it be worth the hype? The company itself posted a video with unexplained dark spots along the right edge that appear to be due to wear and tear, but then again, maybe they’re intentional.
But is it practical? Samsung seems to think that folding with a kind of hinge mechanism is the way to go instead when they told CNBC earlier in September that they will be releasing the Galaxy X, a flip-phone style smartphone, by the end of this year.
And Samsung is not alone in the folding screen world. Over this year and the next, you can expect to see variants of the foldable screen from Motorola (the Razr may be on its way back), LG and Huawei, some folding like a book and others like the classic flip phone. JB

Apple shows off costliest iPhone yet
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple unveiled three new iPhones on Wednesday, including its biggest and most expensive model yet, as the company sought to widen the product’s appeal amid slowing sales.
CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPhone XS Max, which has a bigger screen than the one on last year’s dramatically designed model, the iPhone X.
The iPhone XS Max will cost about $1,100, topping the iPhone X, which at $1,000 seemed jaw-dropping at the time. An updated iPhone X, now called the XS, stays at $1,000.
As with the iPhone X, both new phones have screens that run from edge to edge, an effort to maximize the display without making the phone too awkward to hold.
Increasingly larger screens
The screen needs no backlight, so black would appear as truly black rather than simply dark. The Max model looks to be about the size of the iPhone 8 Plus, though the screen size is much larger.
The iPhone XS Max, which will be available on Sept. 21— with orders open the week before—represents Apple’s attempt to feed consumers’ appetite for increasingly larger screens as they rely on smartphones to watch and record video and to take photos wherever they are.
By making more expensive iPhones, Apple has been able to boost its profits despite waning demand as people upgrade phones less frequently.
IPhones fetched an average price of $724 during the April-June period, a nearly 20-percent increase from a year earlier.
Apple also showed off a cheaper iPhone, called the iPhone XR. It has a traditional, lower-quality screen and an aluminum body; it’s physically smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus but has a bigger screen. It’ll cost roughly $750 and come out on Oct. 26.
All three new models join the iPhone X in getting rid of the home button to make room for more screen. They will have facial-recognition technology to unlock the device.
Target: affluent households
Although it didn’t sell quite as analysts anticipated, the iPhone X still emerged as the most popular in Apple’s lineup, according to Cook.
That emboldened the company to aim an even more expensive device at the affluent households that tend to gravitate to its products, especially in the United States and Europe.
For everyone else, many of whom are still using iPhones they purchased several years ago, there’s the XR.
“I am going to go out on a limb and say the XR is going to become Apple’s top-selling iPhone,” said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights.
“It is a smart strategy to keep more people in the Apple ecosystem and get even more people to come into it,” Moorhead added. — AP

The next major update to the iOS will be released next Tuesday, followed a week later by a Mac software update. Both will be free to install.
Apple also announced updates that push its Apple Watch further into medical device territory. It has a larger screen and a built-in heart sensor that the company said can detect irregular heart rates and perform an electrocardiogram. The latter feature has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company said.
Ben Wood of CCS Insight said getting U.S. regulatory clearance for that is a milestone that underscores the company’s leadership in health and fitness. Typically, smartwatches are marketed as consumer devices, not medical ones needing clearance.
These features will be available to U.S. customers later this year, but Apple did not say when it would make it to the rest of the world.
In addition, Apple said the Series 4 Apple Watch will also be able to detect when someone falls — and can tell the difference between a trip and a fall. If it detects a fall and the user doesn’t respond in a minute, it’ll automatically call for help. This feature may be especially attractive to older people or those with elderly parents worried about falling when no one is around to help.
