China grapples with contradictions over currency

BEIJING, China — China is struggling to reconcile its push for economic reforms and a freely traded currency with curbing massive outflows of capital sparked by worries over its slowing economy — and a lack of communication is fueling fear.

The thorny problem represents the so-called “impossible trinity”, as China’s ruling Communist Party seeks to control the exchange rate and monetary policy, while at the same time moving to freer capital flows, analysts said.

Around $1.0 trillion left China last year, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. In December alone capital outflow from the country was nearly $160 billion, it said.

The cash hemorrhage reflects growing concern about the economy against a backdrop of volatility in the stock and currency markets, which has led both investors and savers to shed their yuan, also known as the renminbi (RMB).

“The recent flood of capital leaving China has been driven primarily by increased skepticism that the People’s Bank (the central bank) will hold to its pledge to keep the renminbi stable,” said Mark Williams, chief Asia economist at Capital Economics.

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, billionaire investor George Soros told Bloomberg TV that the world’s second largest economy, where growth has already slowed to a 25-year low, was heading for more trouble.

“A hard landing is practically unavoidable,” he said, pointing to deflation and excessive debt as a reason for China’s slowdown.

His remarks angered the Chinese media, which accused him of “declaring war” on the currency.

Soros — whose enormous trades are still blamed in some countries for contributing to the Asian financial crisis of 1997 — in the 1990s led speculators in bets against the Bank of England, which unsuccessfully sought to defend the pound’s exchange rate peg.

No policy to devalue

The yuan has retreated against the dollar by 1.3 percent since the start of January, having already slid more than 4.5 percent against the greenback in 2015.

Beijing keeps a grip on currency flows and the yuan can only move up or down against the dollar by two percent daily from a mid-rate set by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), the central bank.

But after a surprise devaluation last August — a move intended to bring it closer to its market value according to Beijing — the yuan is being dragged down by the vast outflows of capital.

Chinese citizens are allowed to convert the equivalent of $50,000 from the domestic currency under an annual quota, though many seek ways to evade the barrier. A popular method is borrowing the quota of other people, such as family members.

When the PBoC in mid-December signaled a change in the way it manages the yuan’s value by measuring the unit against a basket of currencies instead of pegging it to the dollar, the move increased the level of anxiety.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch said the lack of “clear and transparent” rules for the basket led to confusion in the market. At the same time, the decision by the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates has put downward pressure on the yuan.

Chinese officials deny plans to devalue the currency, amid fears Beijing is seeking a currency war to help boost its flagging exports.

“The fluctuations in the currency market are a result of market forces and the Chinese government has no intention and no policy to devalue its currency,” Vice President Li Yuanchao told Bloomberg.

But Beijing faces a dilemma, he said. On the one hand, China wants to expand use of the yuan internationally. At the same time, the government needs to ensure the unit remains stable.

Declining reserves

To keep its currency steady, China has been diving into its foreign exchange reserves — already the world’s largest — to buy massive amounts of yuan.

But it is a bitter pill to swallow. China’s foreign exchange reserves fell $108 billion in December — the biggest monthly decline on record — to $3.3 trillion.

“The PBoC has enough reserves to keep selling at December’s rate until mid-2018 but it would presumably throw in the towel before they were all exhausted,” said Williams of Capital Economics.

The central bank has also refrained from loosening monetary policy by cutting reserve requirements — the amount of funds that banks must put aside — on fears of exacerbating the yuan’s depreciation, analysts said.

Some say China will need to devalue the yuan, and have even called on Beijing to move rapidly towards a free float of the currency.

But others believe such a move would reflect poorly on China, which in November received approval from the International Monetary Fund for the yuan to be included in its basket of elite currencies.

“The potential disruption to financial stability outside China, and with the risk of an Asian currency war, would ultimately feedback negatively to China,” said Michala Marcussen, global head of economics at Societe Generale.

Angelique Kerber upsets Serena Williams, wins Australian Open title

MELBOURNE, Australia — Angelique Kerber has upset Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win the Australian Open title, ending the six-time champion’s unbeaten streak in finals at Melbourne Park.

Williams was an overwhelming favorite at the Australian Open, where she had won all six previous times she’d reached the final, and was trying to equal Steffi Graf’s Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

For the second time in as many majors, though, she fell short. Williams won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2015 before losing to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open semifinals.

The 34-year-old Williams hadn’t lost a set in the first six rounds here until dropping the first on Saturday night against No. 7-seeded Kerber, who was playing in her first major final.

WATCH: Pia Wurtzbach attends Vic-Pauleen wedding

For weeks, people have speculated if Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach would be able to attend the wedding of her best friend Pauleen Luna with comedian-host Vic Sotto given her incredibly busy schedule.

On Saturday, hours before Sotto and Luna’s wedding, Wurtzbach put the speculations to rest by posting on her Instagram account a video of her riding a car with other members of the entourage. She is one of the bridesmaids in the wedding.

“I am so excited to see my best friend get married,” Wurtzbach exclaimed on the video.

Wurtzbach and Luna started their showbiz careers as teenagers, paving the way for years of friendship.

When Wurtzbach won the Miss Universe title in December, Luna reminisced about their bond.

“I remember we would choose to buy food in Mini Stop instead of Brother’s Burger in ABS because we only had little money. We would patiently go to workshop every single day because we wanna be big stars!… I will never forget those days. Simple and days made up of dreams,” Luna posted on her Instagram account.

Sotto, 61, and Luna, 27, are slated to tie the knot on Saturday evening at St. James the Great Parish in Ayala, Alabang.

They got engaged in September 2015.

Wurtzbach is in the Philippines for her grand homecoming. She had asked the Miss Universe Organization to allow her to extend her stay to attend to personal matters. IDL

Netflix to bring back hit TV series ‘Gilmore Girls’

LOS ANGELES, United States—Netflix announced Friday it is reviving the hit TV series “Gilmore Girls,” which won legions of fans more than a decade ago depicting the exploits of a thirty-something mother and her teenage daughter.

The show’s stars—Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore and Alexis Bledel, who played her daughter Rory—will also be back.

Graham confirmed the show’s revival—and her return as its star—on Twitter late Friday.

“I CAN NOW CONFIRM: it’s time for me, and this jacket I stole in 2007, to return to work,” she wrote under the handle @thelaurengraham, adding the @netflix and hashtag #GilmoreGirls.

The Twitter post also showed a copy of Graham holding a lavender jacket with lettering that read “Property of Gilmore Girls Costume” department.

The popular show, which aired 150 episodes from 2000 to 2007, will see actors Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Keiko Agena return as well.

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino will oversee the new program, although Netflix gave no details about the name of the new program, its filming schedule or when fans can expect it to go online.

The latest episodes will be in miniseries format, with four 90-minute shows, Variety magazine said, citing sources, whereas the original episodes were in standard TV-series format.

Google parent Alphabet may soon top Apple’s market value

SAN FRANCISCO— As the digital advertising market booms and demand for smartphones wanes, Alphabet Inc. could soon dethrone Apple as the world’s most valuable company.

If it happens, Alphabet will move to the head of the class just five months after Google reorganized itself under the holding company.

The Silicon Valley rivals could trade places as early as Friday, given how rapidly the financial gap between them is narrowing. At the end of trading on Thursday, Apple’s market value stood at $522 billion; Alphabet was worth $515 billion.

That’s a dramatic swing from where things stood just 13 months ago. Apple then boasted a market value of $643 billion, almost twice Google Inc.’s $361 billion.

Since then, investors have soured on Apple Inc. The company has struggled to come up with another trend-setting product amid slumping sales of its most important device — the nearly 9-year-old iPhone, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of Apple’s overall sales.

Apple has already acknowledged the iPhone will begin this year with its first quarterly sales decline since it debuted in 2007. The slowdown helped push down Apple’s stock price by 15 percent since the end of 2014.

In contrast, Google has maintained its leadership in the lucrative Internet search and ad market while building other popular products in video, mobile, web browsing, email and mapping. That bundle of Google services brings in most of Alphabet’s revenue, and is expected to deliver growth in the 15 percent to 20 percent range as marketers shift even more of their budgets to digital services.

Alphabet also has impressed investors by reining in its spending. Google hired a Wall Street veteran, Ruth Porat, as its chief financial officer last May.

In addition to reversing a long expansion of Google’s operating expenses, Porat also persuaded Alphabet’s board to spend $5 billion buying back its own stock. That move signaled a more shareholder-friendly approach to managing the company’s cash hoard.

Investors also have applauded the creation of Alphabet, which is structured to provide more information about the cost of the company’s experimental ventures into self-driving cars, Internet access services, health science and city management.

All of those factors have helped lift Alphabet’s stock — previously Google’s — by 41 percent since the end of 2014.

It’s a potentially big shift for Apple, which has held bragging rights as the world’s most valuable company for most of the past four-and-a-half years. (ExxonMobil seized the high ground for a brief time in 2013.)

Alphabet would become the 12th company to rise to the most valuable spot, according to Standard & Poor’s.

BGP Financial analyst Colin Gillis believes the potential changing of the guard reflects a wider recognition that Alphabet is fostering a “culture of innovation” while Apple has lost some of its magic since the October 2011 death of co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs. “I no longer see a sense of urgency at Apple,” Gillis said.

If Alphabet doesn’t surpass Apple’s market value on Friday, it could do so early next week after it releases fourth-quarter earnings on Monday. Investors expect a big quarter after Google’s closest competitor in digital ads, Facebook Inc., announced that its revenue soared 52 percent in the period.

Of course, Apple isn’t just rolling over. It’s reportedly working on new products such as self-driving cars, virtual reality and Internet TV that could conceivably re-ignite its revenue growth — as could any resurgence in the iPhone itself. Alphabet has shown no signs of letting up on Google’s grip in Internet search or its expansion into other markets.

Which means we could see Apple and Alphabet continue to trade places in the market-value rankings over the next few years, as both race to be the first company worth $1 trillion.

Teen who asked Pia to be his prom date ‘excited,’ inspired to work out

@MissUniverse here's my question: @PiaWurtzbach will you go to my senior prom with me? 😁

— Jerel Labra ن (@JerelLabra) January 28, 2016

The 17-year-old Filipino who asked reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach to be his prom date had his hopes up after getting a reply from the beauty queen herself.

During Wurtzbach’s #AskMissUniverse Twitter event on Thursday, Jerel Labra from Texas, through a video message, asked the Filipino beauty title holder if she could go with him to their school’s senior prom.

Wurtzbach answered: “I’d love to go if my schedule permits. So, we’ll see. I can’t promise anything yet right now, but your message was really sweet.”

Labra expressed gratitude to Wurtzbach for noticing his proposal, adding he was hoping the Miss Universe would make it to their date.

“Thank you for your reply Pia! I hope you can make it, but please make time for it! Excited na ‘ko,” Labra tweeted.

The teenager also posted a video of himself working out in the gym, saying Wurtzbach’s reply inspired him to be more physically fit.

“When @Miss Universe @PiaWurtzbach gives me that inspiration to work out harder at the gym,” he said. YG/RC

LOOK: 1D’s Louis Tomlinson introduces baby Freddie

Is there room for one more One Direction member?

Because if there is, a baby who is barely a week old may just be the perfect candidate.

Meet baby Freddie, the son of One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson and stylist Briana Jungwirth.

On Thursday, Tomlinson sent social media into collective “Awws” when he posted a picture of him cradling his newborn son.

“Meet my little lad, Freddie,” the caption of his photo read.

Jungwirth gave birth to Freddie on January 22. She and Tomlinson, however, are no longer together.

One Direction, which was formed on the British talent competition “X Factor,” rose to fame with hits like “Perfect,” “Steal My Girl,” and “What Makes You Beautiful.”

In 2015, after Zayn Malik had announced that he was splitting up from the group, One Direction announced that it was going to take an “extended” hiatus in 2016.

The band, however, clarified that the break would not be permanent, even releasing an album as a foursome.

With the hiatus already imminent, Tomlinson can focus on rearing his adorable son. IDL

Italian gay rights debate prompts rethink of sacred family

ROME— In Italy, family is considered so sacred that marriage is lauded in the Constitution. But what kind of family?

That has become a bitterly divisive question in a nation where the Vatican packs considerable political weight and where gays have grown impatient as other traditionally Catholic European countries have either allowed same-sex couples to marry or legally recognized their civil unions.

On Thursday, Italy’s Senate will plunge into a debate on proposed legislation to grant legal recognition to “civil unions,” including those of homosexual couples, without equating the partnerships to marriage.

The coalition government of Premier Matteo Renzi is pushing for the legislation, which includes the right of inheritance, to receive the pension of his or her deceased partner, or to make medical decisions about a partner in hospital. But one provision of the bill, to permit gays to adopt the biological children of their partner, has generated animosity even within Renzi’s coalition.

Opponents fear the so-called “stepchild adoption” will encourage male couples to turn to surrogate mothers abroad. Surrogacy is banned in Italy, as well as in many other European countries. Headlines warning of a surge in “rented uteruses” have abounded lately in Italian Catholic publications, as well as in more conservative lay newspapers.

Intentionally or not, Pope Francis has waded into the debate. Last week, in an annual address to the Vatican tribunal that grants marriage annulments, the pontiff declared: “There can’t be any confusion between the family intended by God and every other kind of union.”

And the head of the politically influential Italian Bishops Conference defended Catholics’ having their say in the debate. Laity must “inscribe divine law into earthly life,” Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco said.

According to Vatican teaching, homosexual relations are sinful and marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Pro-Vatican elements among Renzi’s Democrats are among those insisting the adoption provision be jettisoned, and the premier has told lawmakers “to vote according to your conscience.”

While politicians squabble over what rights gay couples should have, Italian courts increasingly have been approving the adoption by gays of their partner’s biological children on a case-by-case basis.

“This law is needed. Period,” Renzi told an Italian radio station recently, as political debate grew more acrimonious.

Besides the faith factor, the proposed bill has prompted a rethink of what constitutes family in a country where people rely on relatives or spouses when the state falls short. Grandparents care for children because public daycare spots are scarce; hospital staff often assume Italians will bring hot meals to their relatives’ bedside.

“Culturally, family is the ballast to Italian identity,” said Lisa Colletta, a professor of gender studies at The American University of Rome.

In her apartment in Rome, Martina Castagnole wakes in the middle of the night to care for 7-month-old Gabriele, and during the day plays with him, exactly like the boy’s biological mother, her partner, Giulia Filibeck, does.

“But in everyday life, I have no rights. I can’t take my son from school, I can’t travel with him abroad. If the baby is in the hospital, I cannot be involved” in his care, Castagnole told The Associated Press.

She said neighbors, or people whom the couple run into in the supermarket, accept the baby, which was conceived with sperm from a donor in England.

“It’s ever more frequent that people we meet, doctors, others, treat us and talk to us like we are both parents,” Castagnole said.

“Society is more advanced than the law,” she added, while lawmakers “have pressures on them, political, cultural, from the church.”

Opponents of the proposed legislation fear gay civil unions will pave the way for gay marriage. They have promised to draw 1 million people to Rome’s ancient Circus Maximus field on Saturday to loudly lodge their objections to “stepchild adoption.”

“We uphold the position of the Catholic church on marriage, a millennia-old institution,” said a rally organizer, Paolo Maria Floris. He stressed that organizers support “individual” rights for gay couples such as inheritance. “But the rights of children come first; they need to have a mother and a father.”

Next weekend’s rally comes in contrast to rallies in nearly 100 cities nationwide last Saturday, when homosexuals and other backers of the legislation sounded alarm clocks at the same hour to signal that the time has come to give rights to same-sex couples.

In a curious twist, some backers of the bill hail from the conservative fold of former Premier Silvio Berlusconi, whose fiancee is an outspoken advocate for gay rights.

The bill’s path will likely be a long one. Opponents have tacked on several thousand amendments in a bid it to slow down the process, and it is not known when lawmakers will vote on the proposal. TVJ

5 Tips on How to Do the Latest Beauty Trends

Looking at the spring/summer runways, the upcoming makeup trends are polar opposites. One one end, you’ve got Marni, Moschino, and Proenza Schouler going for a natural look, focusing on thicker lashes, full brows and dewy skin. Heavy contouring isn’t the thing anymore. On the other hand, you’ve got wild child ambitions with colorful and almost messy looks from Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, and Kenzo.

So the question is: How do I pull these off effectively? We asked MAC senior makeup artist Louise Zizzo, whose worked with Gwen Stefani, Cyndi Lauper, and Missy Elliot, just exactly what one can do to be able to strobe effectively and add a pop of color to the eyes without overhauling our makeup collection.

What will be the eyebrow trend this coming season?
It’s still all about having a full-on brow. One trend we have is how to look like you have little to no makeup at all and one way to [help pull that off] is to have thick and healthy brows. We need to make it look natural with very, thin feather-like and hair-like follicles strokes but not boxing them in and heavily outlining them.

How can one be able to do a pink or coral eyeshadow look without seeming as if they haven’t slept or their eyes look sore?
It’s about keeping [your choices] within the taupe and peaches. If the coral shade registers too orange on your skin rather than peach, that’s when it’s going to look like you have a sore eye. Keeping it on a more muted version rather than a vivid one will make those eyeshadows wearable.

You should also prep the eyes properly. If you don’t, any kind of shadow is going to oxidize so any shadow is going to look darker and more intense.

Strobing and highlighting using a powder can make pores larger. What can you advise to those women who want to get that highlighted look without using a cream?
If you can’t avoid using a powder, I would suggest just combining it first with a setting spray or solution. Adding that liquid would make it of a better consistency for dry skin and give you a naturally dewy look.

How can girls with oily skin use strobing to their advantage?
I would suggest using the strobe cream or highlighter underneath their foundation. A mattifying foundation would make it look like the glow is from within rather than an oily sheen or sweat over your face.

What are the five essential products needed to achieve this season’s looks?
A good red lipstick, a tube of waterproof mascara, a blue eyeliner, green eyeshadow, and satin-finish powders or products to help achieve strobing.

Sharapova faces nemesis Williams as stakes rise at Australian Open

The business end of the Australian Open begins in earnest on Tuesday when top seed Serena Williams faces old rival Maria Sharapova for a place in the semi-finals in a repeat of last year's title match.

In the men's draw defending champion Novak Djokovic, taken to five sets in the fourth round, will have to improve as he faces Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori while Roger Federer aims to continue his smooth progress against Tomas Berdych.

Sharapova will be desperate to avenge last year's final loss to Williams, although the omens are not good for the Russian.

She has lost her last 17 matches against the 34-year-old Williams and the American 21-times grand slam champion has been in dominant form so far in Melbourne after some pre-tournament injury concerns.

Williams remains wary though, saying such a one-sided statistic can work both ways.

"I think the person who's winning could definitely feel the pressure because there is a lot of expectations," she said.

"The person who is losing X amount in a row could think 'I don't have anything to lose.'"

Djokovic's bid for a sixth Australian Open title was nearly sabotaged by Gilles Simon in round four and the in-form Nishikori will pose a serious threat as he attempts to prevent Djokovic reaching a 29th grand slam semi-final.

Nishikori beat Djokovic the last time they met in a grand slam, at the 2014 U.S. Open semi-final, and will need to reproduce that form on Tuesday.

"I think the biggest thing is he doesn't miss," he said. "He doesn't give you easy points, any free points." Federer takes on a familiar foe in Berdych, with the pair facing each other for the 22nd time.

The Swiss is on a four-match winning streak against the powerful Czech, but has lost their last two grand slam meetings.

Berdych will look to pull off another major upset, as he did at the same stage last year when he ended a 17-match losing streak against Rafael Nadal.

Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska opens the action on Rod Laver Arena when she battles it out with 10th seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

The 26-year-old scrapped through to the quarter-finals after being pushed to her limits by Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam in the previous round. — Reuters

Three people test positive for Zika in New York

New York — Three people in New York have tested positive for the Zika virus, which has been blamed for a surge in babies born with abnormally small heads in Latin America, city officials said Friday.

All three had travelled to areas outside the United States where the mosquito-borne ailment is spreading rapidly, the New York State Department of Health said, without specifying where.

Officials said one person has completely recovered, while the others are still getting better.

US health authorities earlier on Friday expanded a travel warning for pregnant women to avoid 22 places in Latin America and the Caribbean due to the Zika virus.

It has been linked to thousands of cases of a birth defect known as microcephaly, when babies are born with abnormally small heads, which can cause brain damage.

New York authorities warned anyone contemplating travel to warmer regions to take care.

"We are urging residents, especially pregnant women, to check all health advisories before travelling and take preventive measures when travelling to affected countries," said New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker.

Women in these areas are urged to take measures to avoid mosquito bites, including wearing long sleeves and pants, and applying insect repellent. — Agence France-Presse

Slow-starting Warriors catch fire to storm past Bulls

The Golden State Warriors took a few minutes to warm up but they eventually caught fire and rolled to a 125-94 thumping of the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on Wednesday.

Stephen Curry had 25 points, Klay Thompson 20 and Harrison Barnes finished with 19 to lead the Warriors (39-4), who also got double-digit bench scoring from Andre Iguodala (10 points), Leandro Barbosa (12) and Shaun Livingston (12).

Derrick Rose led all scorers with 29 points and Jimmy Butler added 23 points for the Bulls (24-17), who were swept by Golden State in the two-game season series.

Chicago got double-digit scoring off the bench from rookie forward Bobby Portis (16 points) and guard E'Twaun Moore (13).

The Warriors trailed through the game's first four minutes, but unfurled an 11-4 run to seize the lead and never trailed again.

Rose hit five of his first six shots and scored 10 of the Bulls' first 12 points to start the game. Golden State, however, took advantage of Chicago coach Fred Hoiberg's decision to sit Rose with 6:12 left in the first.

Without Rose on the floor, the Warriors out-scored the Bulls 21-6 the rest of the quarter to lead 34-18 starting the second. Curry, who played all 12 minutes in the first, led the way with 10 points and six assists.

Golden State, which got points from all 13 players who dressed, continued its dominance in the second.

The Warriors used their advantage in scoring depth to push the lead to 63-44 at halftime, despite Rose running his points tally to 21 on 10-of-15 shooting.

Rose's big night was not nearly enough, however, and Butler found his range too late.

Butler scored 10 points in a 12-4 run to start the third, pulling Chicago within 67-56 with 6:13 left in the quarter but the Warriors responded with five straight points to spark a 17-5 run.

Barnes and Curry hit back-to-back three-pointers in the surge, and the latter put an exclamation point on the quarter with a dunk to complete the scoring. — Reuters

Three Tips To Save For A Down Payment

Saving for a down payment can be daunting for first-time home buyers, but breaking it down into small steps can make the process less daunting. A home is a great investment, and there are many ways to save for this big purchase.

A potential home buyer should try to save 5-20% of the value of the home. Here are some helpful tips for saving for your dream home.

    1. Let Your Money Grow

Hold your savings in a fund where they can accumulate the highest possible amount of interest. Good examples of accounts include:

Canadian Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA)
        Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
        Mutual Funds
        RRSP
        High Interest Savings Account

    2. Pay off Existing Debt

It’s hard for your money to grow when you owe–and are paying interest. In fact, those who have too much consumer debt will not qualify for a mortgage. Before starting to save for a down payment, address existing debt. If you feel overwhelmed by this project, just take it slow.

    3. Downsize

Examine your current lifestyle to see if there are any areas in your life where you can downsize or cutback. Not only can this help you save for a down payment, it can also help you pay off existing debt and not accumulate more.

Look where you’re spending your money. Are you:

        Going out a lot?
Buying pricey new clothes every season?
        Indulging in expensive vacations?
        Buying all the latest technology?

Once you identify where you are overspending, try to put yourself on a budget. Even small compromises in your lifestyle can have a snowball effect, and accelerate your saving process. For instance:

Eating out a lot? Going out to restaurants can become very expensive. Perhaps you go out for dinner once a week. Try cooking at home and cutting back to just going out once a month.

Shopping too much? Take stock of what you already have, and only spend money on things you absolutely need. Maybe you really want a new spring jacket, but if you already have a perfectly good one, that money should be going to your savings.

Pricey vacations? Look for getaways that are closer to home, or keep an eye out for cheap flights and trip deals.

When it comes to saving money, the little things really make a difference. It may seem like a sacrifice, but it is one that will pay off down the road. There are many ways to be creative when it comes to saving money, and once you find the way that’s right for you, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a homeowner!

Kings halt Clippers' 10-game win streak

LOS ANGELES — DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as the Sacramento Kings ended the Los Angeles Clippers' 10-game winning streak with a 110-103 victory on Saturday night at Staples Center.

"To come in their house and get a win like this is good for us," said Cousins, who had 15 points in the first half.

Rudy Gay had 18 points and seven rebounds while Omri Casspi and Darren Collison came off the bench to add 17 points apiece for the Kings (17-23), who snapped a five-game skid against Los Angeles.

Ben McLemore and Rajon Rondo had 15 and 13 points, respectively. Rondo also had 10 assists and seven rebounds.

The Clippers, who were again without center DeAndre Jordan (pneumonia) and forward Blake Griffin (partially torn left quad tendon), hadn't lost since falling 100-99 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Dec. 21.

"We felt we had an advantage going into the game, especially with their bigs out, so we wanted to take advantage of it and get the ball into the paint," Rondo said.

"(Cousins) was able to find guys on the perimeter. He did a great job of passing the ball. We passed the ball great as a team, and we got the win."

J.J. Redick scored 22 points, hitting five three-pointers, to lead the Clippers (26-14). Center Cole Aldrich finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and guard Jamal Crawford had 20 points.

Chris Paul, who was in foul trouble throughout the night, chipped in 15 points and seven assists.

"We don't want to take anything away from them, they played great," said Paul, who managed just four-of-11 shooting from the floor but hit three of five three-pointers in 27 minutes.

"They made shots, they moved the ball well. We knew coming in to this game that they were a high-scoring team and we never slowed them down."

The Kings used a 13-0 surge to rally from a six-point deficit for a 54-47 advantage after a three-point play by Collison with 3:13 left in the second quarter. Sacramento led 64-60 at the break.

"It's a quality win for us," Rondo said. "It's a roller-coaster season for us, but for us to put two games together in a row, get some rest the next couple of days and hopefully do the same thing (Wednesday) against the Lakers." — Reuters

Prince William's wife Kate to guest-edit Huffington Post

London — Prince William's wife Kate is to guest-edit the UK section of The Huffington Post to highlight child mental health issues, Kensington Palace announced Friday.

The Duchess of Cambridge will sit in the news website's hot seat for a day in mid-February, their official residence said.

Kate will use the opportunity to highlight the work being done by parents, teachers, researchers, and mental health professionals, the palace said.

"The Duchess of Cambridge has made the mental health of young children a key focus of her work in recent years," a spokesman said.

"She is delighted that The Huffington Post will help put a spotlight on this important issue.

"The Duchess will be commissioning contributions from a number of leading figures in the mental health sector as well as from young people, parents, and teachers."

The 34-year-old has campaigned against the stigma surrounding childhood mental illness, and is a patron of several related charities.

Last year, Kate visited charities helping vulnerable children, and publicly spoke about the cause on several occasions.

Stephen Hull, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post UK, said they were "thrilled" that the duchess was joining the team.

"Dealing with mental health issues has been a major editorial focus for us and I'm very excited to be working together on such an important project." — Agence France-Presse

Daily sugary drinks tied to increased visceral fat

Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages like soda daily may lead to more abdominal fat gain over time, according to a new study.

So-called visceral fat in the midsection wraps around internal organs like the liver and pancreas and affects the function of hormones like insulin. Insulin dysfunction, and becoming resistant to insulin, is closely tied to type 2 diabetes and heart disease risk.

“A lot of prior studies have looked at sugar-sweetened beverages and obesity,” said lead author Dr. Caroline S. Fox. “We looked at body fat distribution, in particular change over time.”

Fox, a former investigator with the Framingham Heart Study of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, is currently a special volunteer with the National Institutes of Health.

She and her colleagues found that all participants tended to gain visceral fat over time, but those who drank sugary beverages daily gained more.

The researchers used data from about 1,000 adult participants in the Framingham Heart Study in Framingham, Massachusetts, who answered food frequency questions about sugar-sweetened beverages and diet soda.

Sugar-sweetened beverages like regular soda and fruit punch have added sucrose or high fructose corn syrup. Most participants said they drank a mixture of sugary beverages and diet soda.

About a third said they never consumed sugar-sweetened beverages, 20 percent did so occasionally, 35 percent drank them frequently and 13 percent drank them daily.

At the study start, they underwent a computed tomography scan to measure quantity and volume of abdominal fat tissue. Six years later, they underwent another scan.

Over that period, visceral fat volume increased by 658 cubic centimeters for non-drinkers, slightly more for occasional and frequent drinkers, and by 852 cubic centimeters for daily drinkers of sugary beverages, as reported in the journal Circulation.

For daily drinkers, that’s in increase of about 0.8 kilograms, or 1.8 pounds, of abdominal fat, Fox told Reuters Health by phone.

“That’s probably a very small difference of actual visceral fat,” but it’s enough to make a difference for metabolic risk, according to other studies, she said.

Diet soda wasn’t linked to an increase in visceral fat.

It’s not clear from this study whether decreasing sugary beverage intake would decrease the gain in visceral fat over time, Fox said.

The American Heart Association recommends a limit of 100 calories per day of added sugars, such as those found in sweetened beverages, for most women, and 150 calories per day for most men.

“Drinking one 12-ounce soft drink a day would exceed that amount—and while they are a major source, sugar-sweetened beverages contribute only about half of the added sugar consumed by Americans,” said Jean Welsh of Emory University in Atlanta, who was not part of the new study.

“Water and milk are the healthiest beverage choices,” Welsh told Reuters Health by email. “Sugary beverage consumers who are looking to reduce their sugar and calorie consumption may find that diet soda consumption helps—but only as long as they are careful to not eat more of something else.” — Reuters

Old TV favorites swept aside at Golden Globes as hackers, musicians rule

Hackers and musicians ruled at the Golden Globes on Sunday as old television favorites were cast aside for a slew of new shows and rising actors.

Amazon Studio's streaming show "Mozart in the Jungle," about the backstage lives of New York classical musicians, went home with the best TV comedy series and a best actor award for its star Gael Garcia Bernal.

On the drama side, the USA cable network series "Mr. Robot," about a bunch of hackers and anarchists, emerged the surprise winner, defeating Emmy-winning HBO medieval fantasy "Game of Thrones."

"Mr. Robot" also brought a supporting actor prize for Christian Slater as Globe organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, continued their tradition of recognizing new programming.

"I gotta thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. They just gave the best drama series award to a show called 'Mr. Robot' and that took a lot of courage," said the show's creator Sam Esmail.

As award-winning shows and their stars including political satire "Veep," ground-breaking transgender series "Transparent" and quirky black comedy "Fargo" sat on the sidelines, only Jon Hamm, star of advertising drama "Mad Men," was a repeat winner.

"Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for supporting our show all the way to the end," said Hamm, accepting his best drama actor award for his role as the moody womanizer Don Draper. "Thank you to Mr Weiner (the show's creator) who wrote this horrible person and picked me to play him."

Fox television's popular hip-hop industry saga "Empire" produced a best actress win for a jubilant Taraji P. Henson, who plays family matriarch Cookie Lyon.

"Who knew that playing an ex convict would take me all around the globe?!," Henson said of her character, who spent 17 years in jail for selling crack cocaine.

Newcomer Rachel Bloom, 28, beat veterans Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jamie Lee Curtis in her role as the "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" in the CW's new musical comedy series, which she also helped to create. An excited Bloom recalled that the show was turned by six other networks before landing at the CW.

Premium cable powerhouses Showtime and HBO, usually dominant in the TV awards, picked up just two statuettes. Maura Tierney was named supporting actress for playing a jilted wife in "The Affair" while Oscar Isaac won for playing an ambitious local councilman in mini-series "Show Me a Hero."

Pop star Lady Gaga, dressed old-style Hollywood in a form fitting black velvet gown, was a modest winner for her role as a vampire countess in the limited series "American Horror Story: Hotel."

"This is one of the greatest moments in my life," said an emotional Gaga. "I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer but music worked out first."

Broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC won nothing on Sunday. —Reuters

Seconds out, and legs out, as London Fashion Week enters the ring

LONDON - Proving that manliness can come wrapped in a skirt, design duo Sibling on Saturday stamped their style on London Fashion Week with a bold collection inspired by boxing and 1980s pop culture.

Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" opened the show, held in the basement of the neo-Gothic Victoria House in the heart of the British capital, a fitting soundtrack to the British pair's punchy but light-hearted designs.

The catwalk became a ringwalk as male models paraded in thick woollen hoodies decorated with medals, inspired by boxers' robes.

Punchbags were fashioned into fabric travel bags while the hand-strapping worn by fighters and martial artists provided the inspiration for a set of mittens.

But pop stars as well as pugilists were a driving force behind the collection, with the dominant royal blue palette a tribute to an album cover by 1980s pop diva Grace Jones, Sibling designer Cozette McCreery told AFP.

"The other person that was a huge influence was [Jean-Michel] Basquiat," one of contemporary art's leading stars and graffiti pioneer who died in 1988, she added.

The designers encouraged men to shun fashion conventions, showcasing a range of skirts also embellished with medals.

"We like legs," said McCreery. "As a girl, I'd be very happy if lots of guys showed more leg."

Earlier in the day, Astrid Andersen presented a comfortable and modern wardrobe inspired by urban street-wear, using a variety of materials including quilted nylon, denim and tweed in a collection she said was "focussed on fabric."

The palette ranged from  grey to turquoise through to orange, and the young designer offered her own take on the male mitten, stretching all the way to the elbow.

Shows for the autumn-winter 2016 season began on Friday and will continue until Monday.

Men's Fashion Week will then up sticks and head for Milan and Paris before ending in New York.

Sales in men's fashion leapt by 22 percent in Britain to £13.5 billion ($19.6 billion, €18 billion) between 2009 to 2014, according to market researcher Mintel. Agence France-Presse

‘Exercise prescriptions’ important for type 2 diabetes

Patients with type 2 diabetes should be given exercise “prescriptions” that specify the type, duration, intensity and frequency of workouts, adapted to the individual, according to a new review.

Although exercise improves blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, most people with diabetes do not engage in regular exercise, the authors write.

“Exercise and physical activity can help to control type 2 diabetes,” said lead author Dr. Romeu Mendes of the Public Health Unit, ACES Douro I—Marao e Douro Norte in Vila Real, Portugal.

“There are many successful case-studies of patients who reversed metabolic dysfunction only with lifestyle strategies (exercise plus diet),” but the benefits disappear when healthy diet and regular exercise stop, he said.

“Diabetes is a chronic disease and must be managed for life,” Mendes said. “Regular exercise and a healthy nutritional pattern are the basis of the treatment.”

The researchers reviewed published recommendations or guidelines for exercise prescriptions for people with type 2 diabetes issued by international scientific organizations in the field of diabetology, endocrinology, cardiology, public health and sports medicine.

They included 11 publications from institutions like the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, American Diabetes Association, Francophone Diabetes Society and Swedish National Institute of Health.

“We were not aware that there were so many scientific organizations issuing specific recommendations for exercise prescription in this population,” Mendes told Reuters Health by email.

The guidelines agreed that people with type 2 diabetes should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise per week, spread over at least three days of the week, and also recommend resistance exercise at least twice weekly.

Aerobic exercise can include brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming or other activities, and resistance exercise should target large muscle groups with machines or free weights. Some institutions also recommend some flexibility training, Mendes and colleagues reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

“The ultimate and most important variable for people is quality of life,” Mendes said, noting that exercise particularly improves health-related quality of life.

Exercise has indisputable life-saving benefits, but there is limited research on the benefits of exercise among people with diabetes, said Huseyin Naci, a health policy researcher at the London School of Economics who was not part of the new review.

“According to our previous research, there is a bias against testing exercise,” Naci told Reuters Health by email. “Medical research increasingly favors drug interventions over strategies to modify lifestyle.”

“The vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes do not engage in regular exercise,” Mendes said. “This may be explained by insufficient awareness about the potential benefits of exercise and the lack of specific knowledge about current recommendations.”

Advising patients to increase their exercise levels is not enough, he said. Prescriptions should include specific information on the type, mode, duration, intensity and weekly frequency, and the exercise strategies must be adapted for each individual, based on other health conditions, contraindications and realistic personal goals.

“According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one third of doctors prescribe exercise in primary care,” Naci said. “This is promising, but more doctors should discuss and give brief advice to their patients about the benefits of exercise and refer patients with diabetes to structured exercise programs.” — Reuters

New US diet rule gets mixed response on social media

NEW YORK  - A new health guideline suggesting people should cut consumption of sugar while increasing intake of meat, coffee and cholesterol-heavy foods drew heated response on social media on Friday.

Hashtag #DietaryGuidelines was among the top trending topics on Twitter after US government released a report late on Thursday suggesting people should keep their sugar and corn syrup intake to less than 10 percent of daily calorie consumption.

Currently the average American consumes about 270 calories a day in sweeteners, or 13 percent, the guidelines said.

The new rules allow up to five cups of coffee a day, drop a previous limit on the consumption of cholesterol-laden food (while still curbing saturated fats to less than 10 percent of calories per day) and allow a variety of meats.

Twitter user @NVGhost005 wrote cynically: "With all these new dietary guidelines coming out, EVERYTHING one eats/drinks puts one at risk. Might as well not care."

"After reading the full report, these guidelines are quite disappointing, IMHO #DietaryGuidelines", tweeted health coach Pam McGovern (@weavegirl40) on Friday.

Comedian Brian Parise (@bpcomedy) also tweeted an image sarcastically poking fun at the report: "People are being critical of the new dietary guidelines the government put out today, but I think they nailed it.”

Ano kaya iyon? Abangan. -- FRJ, GMA News

Emma Watson starts 'feminist book club' online

British actress Emma Watson, an outspoken advocate of feminism, has started another way to share her thoughts and hear more ideas on equality.

Watson announced on her Facebook page on Friday that she has started a “feminist book club,” putting up the “Our Shared Shelf” group on Goodreads, a social network for readers.

The actress, who gained worldwide acclaim playing the brainy wizard Hermione Granger  — a bookworm — in the "Harry Potter" movies, plans moderate the group and lead discussions about the chosen book for every month.

"The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all," she wrote.

"Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation," she added.

In July 2014, United Nations’ gender equality body UN Women named Watson as a goodwill ambassador to advocate for the empowerment of young women. A few months after in September, she launched the HeForShe campaign in an impassioned speech at the UN’s New York headquarters. —Trisha Macas/JST, GMA News

‘Doggy bags’ for restaurant leftovers slow to catch on in France

PARIS - At the busy Bouillon Chartier restaurant in central Paris, a chef stands by a diner's table and carefully places the remains of her dish into a plastic takeaway box before putting the container in a bag—"le doggy bag" to be precise.

A new law aimed at combating food waste in France came into effect on Jan. 1, with restaurants serving at least 150 meals a day required to implement measures that prevent waste.

"Concerning the doggy bag, there's no real law that was applied, but [the government] simply encourages restaurant owners to respond favorably to clients who ask to take their leftovers home in a doggy bag," Yann Hulin, director of the Bouillon Chartier, told Reuters.

While the doggy bag may be a regular sighting elsewhere, it has yet to take off in France.

"We've had a few client requests here and there, especially for wine bottles, which of course we oblige, but in terms of dishes, it's extremely rare," Hulin said.

Other Parisian diners were surprised by the concept.

"I don't see myself leaving with a doggy bag. That's clear," Parisian Christelle Groleau said. "I don't see myself strolling around on the streets, if I have to go run errands, with the doggy bag in my hand, in the bag. You have to put it in the fridge at a certain point. We need a refrigerated doggy bag." — Reuters

State of emergency declared in California gas leak

The governor of California on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in a Los Angeles community where a massive gas leak has forced thousands of nearby residents from their homes.

In issuing the emergency order, Governor Jerry Brown said all state agencies would be mobilized to stop the leak that started in October in the Los Angeles suburb of Porter Ranch, to protect public health, and to help the local community.

"All state agencies will utilize state personnel, equipment, and facilities to ensure a continuous and thorough state response to this incident," Brown said in a statement.

He said his office would closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates to residents of the gated community located some 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Brown said he had met on Monday with Porter Ranch residents, thousands of whom have been relocated to temporary housing by the local gas company after complaining of headaches, nausea and nose bleeds.

Kristine Lloyd, a spokeswoman for the Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), said everything possible was being done to fix the leak, which officials have estimated was spewing out between 30,000 and 58,000 kilograms (66,000 and 127,000 pounds) of methane into the air per hour.

"Our focus remains on quickly and safely stopping the leak and minimizing the impact to our neighbors in Porter Ranch," she said in a statement.

"SoCalGas reaffirms our prior commitment to mitigate the environmental impact of the actual amount of natural gas released from the leak."

Officials have said that while the methane leaking from the Aliso Canyon facility poses no immediate danger to human health, its impact on the environment is significant as it is a potent greenhouse gas.

The California Air Resources Board estimates that the leak is so massive that at its peak at the end of November, it increased the West Coast state's greenhouse gas output from methane by as much as 25 percent.

"We really won't be able to assess the impact until the leak is sealed and we have data for the whole incident," said David Clegern, a spokesman for the governmental agency.

"But this is a lot of greenhouse gas for a single incident and it will need to be mitigated."

The leak was detected on October 23 in a well at more than 8,000 feet underground and SoCal Gas estimates it may take until the end of March for the repairs to be completed. — Agence France-Presse

Wall Street lower as investors turn cautious; Apple drags

Apple dragged Wall Street lower on Tuesday, cutting short a feeble recovery from a bruising selloff on the first trading day of the year.

A fall in crude oil prices and a stronger dollar also contributed to the shaky start to the year, which was triggered by weak Chinese economic data on Monday.
In a bid to stabilize its markets, the People's Bank of China on Tuesday injected $20 billion into the financial system.

"Fears of a global recession are valid and fears about China are valid, and they will put some downward pressure on stocks in general, so I do expect 2016 to be negative, but not by much," said Mohannad Aama, managing director, Beam Capital Management in New York.

Apple's shares were down 2.5 percent at $102.68 after the Nikkei reported that the iPhone maker was expected to cut production of its 6S and 6S Plus models.

The stock was the biggest drag on the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, while Goldman Sachs weighed the most on the Dow.

At 12:30 p.m. ET (1730 GMT), the Dow Jones industrial average was down 86.84 points, or 0.51 percent, at 17,062.1, the S&P 500 was down 5.71 points, or 0.28 percent, at 2,006.95 and the Nasdaq Composite index was down 23.04 points, or 0.47 percent, at 4,880.05.

Six of the 10 major S&P sectors were lower, led by a 0.87 percent decline in the energy sector. Exxon and Chevron weighed the most.

Gilead rose 0.9 percent to $98.89 after its experimental hepatitis B drug was found safer than but as effective as its approved treatment, Viread.

Eli Lilly reversed course to trade up 1 percent at $83.66 after the drugmaker said its diabetes treatment grabbed market share in the fourth quarter.

First Solar was up 6.8 percent at $71.20 after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to "buy".

Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1,538 to 1,453. On the Nasdaq, 1,529 issues fell and 1,178 rose.

The S&P 500 index showed three new 52-week highs and five new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded 14 new highs and 43 lows. — Reuters

Study shows higher cancer risk among twins, siblings

MIAMI, Florida - Twins share the same genes, and when one gets cancer, the other faces a higher risk of getting sick too, according to a study Tuesday that included 200,000 people.

But just because one twin falls ill does not mean that the other is certain to get the same cancer, or any cancer at all, according the report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

In fact, the amount of increased risk of cancer was just 14 percent higher in identical pairs in which one twin was diagnosed with cancer.

Identical twins develop from the same egg and share the exact same genetic material.

Among fraternal twins, which develop from two eggs and are as genetically similar as typical biological siblings, the risk of cancer in a twin whose co-twin was infected was five percent higher.

The twins in the study hailed from Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway—all countries that maintain detailed health registries—and were followed between 1943 and 2010.

When researchers looked at the group as a whole, they found that about one in three individuals developed cancer (32 percent).

Therefore, the risk of cancer in an identical twin whose twin was diagnosed was calculated to be 46 percent.

In fraternal twins it amounted to a 37 percent risk of developing cancer if a co-twin was diagnosed.

The exact same cancer was diagnosed in 38 percent of identical twins and 26 percent of fraternal pairs.

The cancers that were most likely to be shared among twins were skin melanoma (58 percent), prostate (57 percent), non melanoma skin (43 percent), ovary (39 percent), kidney (38 percent), breast (31 percent), uterine cancer (27 percent).

"Because of this study's size and long follow-up, we can now see key genetic effects for many cancers," said Jacob Hjelmborg, from the University of Southern Denmark and co-lead author of the study.

Researchers said the findings may help patients and doctors understand more about the hereditary risks of cancer, a disease that kills eight million people around the world each year. — Agence France-Presse

Pia Wurtzbach’s full ‘Kelly and Michael’ interview

A very candid Pia Wurtzbach appeared on US morning talk show "Kelly and Michael" on January 4, animatedly chatting with hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan.

Wurtzbach wore an orange Karen Millen cocktail dress with matching pumps and the Miss Universe crown as her main accessory.

The beauty queen gaily recounted her journey to the Miss Universe stage ("it took me three attempts to join Miss Universe!") and the gamut of emotions she felt during the coronation night.

When host Steve Harvey mistakenly proclaimed Miss Colombia the winner, she said, "I was just thinking: Okay, I made it this far and I'm pretty sure I made my country proud. That's good enough for me. I know I did everything I could, I know I did very well."

Wurtzbach then added with even more enthusiasm, "But when he announced that I was in fact the winner, of course I was even more excited!"

Ripa then asked Wurtzbach about the moment when it finally sunk in that she won and the beauty queen answered with great humor that backstage, after Harvey's mistake was corrected, she was still very nervous.

Laughing, she told Ripa that she asked her manager Esther: "Did I really win? Is this final? Are you going to come back and take the crown from me?"

Wurtzbach also shared her very touristy New Year's Eve at Times Square and openly shared that she wasn't sure what was going on during the event, earning laughs from the audience. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News

US sues VW for at least $20 bn over emissions cheating

New York - The US government sued Volkswagen Monday for installing equipment on nearly 600,000 diesel cars that intentionally subverted clean-air regulations, resulting in excess harmful emissions.

Civil penalties in the lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, could run well above $20 billion, according to the suit.

The complaint alleges that the big German automaker intentionally installed "defeat devices" on its diesel VWs, Audis and Porsches that met tough US environmental tests during official reviews, but spewed up to 40 times the legal levels of poisonous pollutants when on the road.

The Justice Department did not specify a specific overall penalty it was seeking.
But it laid out per-car penalties of up to $37,500, and up to $2,750 per defeat device, which could take the cost of the suit for VW to well past $20 billion.

"Car manufacturers that fail to properly certify their cars and that defeat emission control systems breach the public trust, endanger public health and disadvantage competitors," said assistant attorney general John Cruden.

"The United States will pursue all appropriate remedies against Volkswagen to redress the violations of our nation’s clean air laws alleged in the complaint."

Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for enforcement and compliance assurance at EPA, said the lawsuit would hold Volkswagen accountable and set the case on a "path to resolution."

"So far, recall discussions with the company have not produced an acceptable way forward," Giles said. "These discussions will continue in parallel with the federal court action."  — Agence France-Presse

NZ company offers movie-style soundtracks for immersive e-reading

New Zealand-based startup Booktrack is hoping to change the way people read e-books by incorporating a synchronized soundtrack to accompany the on-page action. It's made up of music, ambient sound and sound effects that dynamically adjust depending on where the reader is up to in the story.

The developers call Booktrack "a disruptive force in the publishing and audio world," comparable to the how the introduction of sound transformed cinema.

"We are the only enhancement for reading delivered while you read. The most powerful thing about reading is being lost in that reading experience, so what we do is add just one layer of that to get you into the experience quicker and keep you there for longer," said Paul Cameron, CEO and Co-founder of Booktrack.

Readers can use Booktrack in their browser or download the software on to their smartphone or tablet.

Currently the top three books in the UK on Booktrack are the Sherlock Holmes stories, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and In the South by Salman Rushdie.

It was the commuter market that prompted the idea for Bootrack, said Cameron, after he saw a trend for people putting on headphones while reading to drown out distractions.

"It was people jumping on buses, trains, ferries, the Tube; plugging in their headphones and reading what was a paper book and is now a screen device. We just thought it was a strange behavior; you don't go home and watch television and turn the volume down and turn the stereo on and listen to unrelated music. So, we thought we could bring that experience together and when we did people really liked it," he said.

"We're fighting against all of the other distractions that we have in modern life, and try to carve out a place for books and reading in it. And that's why you see a rise in audio books, that's why you see people trying to create immersive experiences that sort of push away at the distractions that can pull you out of reading," Michael Tamblyn, CEO of e-reader makers Kobo, told Reuters.

He added that innovations like Booktrack bring an added dimension to reading: "How can you make a story different, how can you create a different kind of reading experience? How can you enrich that experience so that it's more engaging and engaging for different people that might now otherwise engage in books?"

Key to the success of Booktrack's immersive platform is how their audio software dynamically adjusts to each individual's reading speed.

"The problem with reading is that everybody reads at a different reading speed. So what Booktrack does is as you read we know how many words are on the page, every time you turn the page we're measuring how fast or slow you're reading, and then the soundtrack dynamically adjusts to match," said Cameron.

This delivers a contextual and synchronized soundtrack played in harmony with the story, Cameron added.

"It's a bit like having a conductor sitting there going "hang on a minute, he’s slowed down reading, right; cue the next track". So it's dynamically moving with you as you're reading the story."

Booktrack has more than 2.5 million users worldwide, and offers over 16,000 titles in 30 different languages.

The company also offers a free tool for authors and self-publishers to create and add soundtracks to their own work by choreograph their text to a database of sounds and music to create their own Booktrack, which can then be made publicly available online. — Reuters
