Celebrities flock to Indian business scions’ lavish wedding
NEW DELHI — In a season of big Indian weddings, the Wednesday marriage of two business scions is set to be the biggest of them all.
The bride, Isha Ambani, is the Ivy League-educated daughter of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, thought to be India’s richest man. Forbes estimates his net worth at over $43 billion.
The groom, Anand Piramal, is the relative pauper. His father, industrialist Ajay Piramal, is thought to be worth $10 billion.
The wedding is being held in Mumbai on Wednesday but festivities began weeks ago, starting in September with an engagement party at a lakeside Italian palace. Over the weekend, thousands attended pre-wedding parties at a 16th-century palace in the Indian desert city of Udaipur, where footage shot by partiers showed Hillary Clinton dancing with Shah Rukh Khan, one of India’s biggest movie stars, as former Secretary of State John Kerry danced just a few feet away.
The highlight, though, was a performance by Beyonce, who sang “Crazy In Love,” among other hits, with a band backing her up and a series of costume changes that included at least one India-inspired outfit.
“Beyonce Lights Up Udaipur,” the Times of India shouted on Tuesday.
Indian weddings are famously elaborate, driving many families into debt with expectations that they invite hundreds or thousands of people, and arranging professional song-and-dance shows.
The Indian media noted that the Mumbai wedding was expected to be relatively small affair, with just 600 or so people in attendance.
The competitiveness of India’s wintertime wedding season is growing more extreme, according to Archana Dalmia, a social activist in New Delhi.
“A farmer might commit suicide because he can’t save enough money to get his daughter married,” she said.
The extravagant wedding of Indian actress Priyanka Chopra and American singer Nick Jonas earlier this month — attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — was straight out of a Bollywood film.
So-called dowry deaths — brides killed when their families fail to meet in-laws’ dowry demands — constitute a substantial share of all female homicides in India, a 2018 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report found.
While opulence has always been a feature of Indian weddings, families used to hand down bridal saris as heirlooms. No more, Dalmia said.
“This generation is very different. Priyanka Chopra will never be able to wear it again and she won’t be able to pass it down,” Dalmia said. /ee

Football, showbiz stars set for Messi’s wedding
Football and showbiz stars gather in northern Argentina on Friday for Latin America’s celebrity wedding bash of the decade when Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi marries his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo.
Pop star Shakira and her husband, Messi’s teammate Gerard Pique, are expected among the 260 guests, according to media and locals close to the event.
They will join old friends of the couple and footballers such as his Barcelona strike partners Luis Suarez and Neymar.
The party at a casino in his hometown Rosario will be a respite for the player from his legal woes. A Spanish court last month rejected his appeal against a conviction for tax fraud.
All-star guest list
Brunette bride Roccuzzo, 29, will wear a dress by Spanish designer Rosa Clara, which has been flown over from Barcelona.
The designer has dressed stars such as actresses Eva Longoria and Sofia Vergara as well as Spain’s Queen Letizia.
From 2200 GMT the guests will pack into the Hotel City-Center Casino, which stands right next to a crime-ridden slum run by drug gangs.
“Messi’s wedding accentuates the sense of inequality that is symbolized by the casino in that neighborhood,” said Carlos del Frade, author of several books on the drug trade in Rosario.
This city of 1.2 million people is also a cradle of footballing talent, however.
“Rosario lives and breathes football. That is another reason Lionel feels so comfortable here,” the city’s mayor, Monica Fein, told AFP.
“I think he is excited that through his wedding his friends (from abroad) will be able to get to know the city he loves so much.”
Local delicacies
The civil wedding ceremony and party will all take place inside the venue, and the guests will be lodged there too.
Messi, 30 — considered a man of few words — has reportedly asked chefs to cook local delicacies such as “locro” stew and “empanada” pasties for the feast.
The star dish is a typical Argentine beef roast including chitterlings, gizzards and kidneys.
Uruguayan pop bands Rombai and Marama plus singer Karina, wife of Argentina footballer Sergio Aguero, will perform at the dance.
It is not known whether the guests will also get a song from Shakira, the Colombian diva famous for “Whenever, Wherever.”
Tight security and media scrum
Some 155 journalists have been accredited to cover the bash, but have been warned they will have no access to the guests.
Security will be handled by a private team of Israeli specialists used by Messi for all his excursions.
“In Lionel Messi’s case, he’s widely accepted by the people at all levels,” said Diego Manso, a local private security consultant.
“All the same, the security systems will never overlook the probability of a lot of people wanting to approach him, wanting to touch him, take photos with him, from their risk analysis.”
Messi and Roccuzzo live in Barcelona where he plays, but still return regularly to Rosario on holiday.
The couple had their two children baptized there last year: Thiago, 4 and one-year-old Mateo, both born in Barcelona.
“It’s no surprise that he is coming back here to get married,” one of the wedding guests, the player’s old school friend Diego Vallejos, told AFP.
“He is an ordinary person who just wants to be near his family and friends. He is a humble person. Money has not changed his personality.”
Messi and Roccuzzo met as children. He moved to Spain when he was 13 to join FC Barcelona. But they kept in touch.
“They are the love of each other’s lives,” says Vallejos.

Till debt do us part
How far will a budget of P500,000 go when planning a wedding?
Not very far, said Kitten Zapata, editor in chief of Wedding Essentials Magazine, a quarterly rag for the B and C market that keeps tab of local wedding suppliers.
It’s “good enough,” said Zapata, and will cover the reception venue, the use of lights and sound, some alcoholic beverages, food for 100 to 150 guests and maybe a photo booth.
But scratch the wedding gown and the bridesmaids’ outfit, the groom’s suit or barong, and the services of the photographer, videographer, hair stylist, makeup artist and florist. Forget about the wedding rings and the fee for use of the church. They cost extra.
The usual rate for a church without airconditioning is about P15,000 for a 1½-hour service. For grander churches inside gated villages, expect to shell out as much as P30,000, and an optional cash gift for the officiating priest. You also need to book the church at least a year in advance because of high demand.
“Of course, you can get married with a P200,000 budget, but that’s bare bones,” Zapata said. “It just doesn’t compare to a P4-million wedding, which seems to be the goal of many young couples these days,” she added.
A custom wedding dress by a designer who has yet to make a name starts at P100,000, while the rates for an in-demand videographer-photographer can be as much as P250,000, with add-on costs for a camera drone, same-day edit (with footage of church rites shown at the reception), the lookback video (the compilation of the couple’s childhood photos), and the prenup and postnup photo shoots.
Aspirational
Postnups, a new trend, are one-day shoots done while the couple is on honeymoon. If the scenic locale is abroad, the couple pays for the photographer’s airfare and accommodations, said Zapata.
“Weddings are highly aspirational among the younger set,” she added. “They have a dream wedding in mind so they really save and go all out. They consider it a once in a lifetime (experience), so they want the best. They’d rather put the wedding off if they’re not yet financially ready.”
Zapata, however, noted that it’s not unusual for Filipino parents to still foot the bill. “But unlike the previous generation, these millennials have a say on the matter even if they’re not the ones paying.”
A wedding’s cost can vary depending on the priorities of the couple. If the bride doesn’t mind wearing a ready-to-wear gown, she could shell out as little as P35,000 for a local brand, or up to P70,000, the base price of an international RTW label. Conversely, she could splurge on a custom designer dress starting at P200,000, and have her entourage’s gowns made by an unknown designer or seamstress.
It’s the extras that can be quite a burden on a couple’s budget, said Zapata. Makeup artists can charge rates starting at P25,000 (for the bride plus one), up to P40,000 for top-tier professionals.
Reception venues or hotels often include the bridal car in the package they offer, while churches usually take charge of the basic décor. But if the couple wants to hire an event stylist, that’s easily P50,000 more. Wedding planners or coordinators meanwhile charge from P30,000 for the basic one-day service (covering the church rites and reception venue). The rates of more popular wedding planners start at P60,000 for a similar package.
Popular florists charge around P35,000, a rate that could include bouquets for an entourage of 12 to 14. If the bride wants imported flowers like tulips, Ecuadorian roses or peonies, set aside an additional P20,000.
Musicians also cost extra, while a popular event host will charge from P30,000 to P35,000. “That’s why couples on a tight budget just ask friends or relatives to emcee the event,” Zapata said.
Astronomical costs
But the astronomical costs of a wedding has not deterred young couples, the bridal magazine editor said, adding that “the evidence is (contrary to)” the perception that there are fewer weddings in the past few years.
In fact, Zapata added, there are more wedding suppliers than ever, with bridal fairs organized by different groups every month. “That’s just in Metro Manila. Provincial cities like Cebu have their own.” And so do some provinces that have their own regional bridal fairs.
It’s a continuously growing market, where the lower-end suppliers have maintained their rates while the higher-end ones now charge even more, said Zapata, whose magazine has kept tabs of the local bride scene these past 12 years.

Non-diamond engagement rings catching on in Singapore
SINGAPORE—A knot fashioned out of two thin bands of yellow and white gold is the centrepiece of administrative executive Jojo Lin’s engagement ring, which has no gems and was bought on website Etsy for under $500.
While discussing her preferences for rings with her fiance, Ms Lin had decisively steered him away from buying a diamond. The couple also agreed they would “not spend a bomb” on their wedding bands.
“I think it’s not necessary for an engagement ring to have a diamond,” says the 25-year-old, who describes her ring as “simple yet unique” and “for everyday wear.”
She adds: “I’ve never understood why some people have the impression that how much a guy spends on an engagement ring represents how much the girl is worth in his eyes.” Her fiance, teaching assistant Bertrand Sim, 26, proposed in March last year. The couple will marry in July.
More couples here are eschewing the diamond for their engagement rings, choosing alternative centrepieces such as rubies, sapphires and pearls. This typically also means a lower price tag. A one-carat diamond, for instance, could easily cost more than $4,000. An equivalent-sized ruby would typically cost about half that sum.
American luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co, which has five outlets here, has been getting more inquiries for non-traditional engagement rings, such as plain bands, at its Singapore outlets, although it could not provide sales figures.
Jewellery chain Citigems has also noticed the trend. Its spokesman Sarah Sim says: “Millennials and young couples are becoming more adventurous when choosing their engagement rings.
“We see couples coming in looking for rings that are innovative and non-traditional, focusing more on the story and meaning behind the design and jewellery material.”
Singaporean designer Carolyn Kan, founder of jewellery label Carrie K, says that sales of nondiamond engagement rings in its bespoke line have gone up by 15 per cent over the past year.
Sapphire, ruby, emerald and aquamarine gem rings, she says, are most popular among the “small but growing number of people opting for non-diamond rings.”
Contemporary local jewellery brand Saught has also caught onto the trend. It started making bespoke engagement rings early last year. Its co-founder Pamela Yeo, 28, says: “More of our customers have been requesting engagement rings that are non-traditional, ethical and contemporary.”
Most of the label’s bespoke rings feature gemstones such as sapphires, tourmalines and garnets from traceable, ethical sources.
The trend was also thrust into the limelight last month, when an American couple’s engagement ring story went viral. The pair had bought a sterling silver and cubic zirconia ring set for about US$130 (S$190), prompting a snide remark from a sales associate about the low price tag. An account of the episode was put up on social media, sparkingconversation about expensive engagement rings and societal expectations.
Retail experts think the trend towards non-cookie-cutter engagement rings here is more about standing out than spending less.
Dr Lynda Wee, adjunct associate professor of marketing and international business at Nanyang Technological University, says: “There are two types of customers. One will be more traditional and insist on getting the diamond ring. The other is more creative and willing to explore alternatives to expressing their love.”
She also says those who want something unique to tell their story have more options and accessibility to a variety of gems and designs.
Associate professor Ang Swee Hoon, from the department of marketing at National University of Singapore Business School, says couples want their engagement to be special.
“Generally, non-diamond gems are cheaper than diamonds. Therefore, couples can buy bigger pieces to make their engagement ring more outstanding,” she says.
Secondary school teacher Laura Or, 27, wanted something “less common” and received a gold band with a large pearl at the centre with three smaller rubies on each side from her fiance Joshua Ang, 29, when he proposed two months ago.
“I specifically told him I didn’t want a diamond. I said I wanted the band to be gold and I want the stone to have colour. I think a diamond is boring.” Her ring cost about $3,000.
However, fashion director Wang Titien decided it was best to stick to convention when he proposed to his girlfriend in July 2015.
The 27-year-old, who bought a 0.85-carat solitaire diamond engagement ring from Tiffany & Co, thought the ring should be something classic. It cost him $12,000.”The diamond engagement ring is a tradition. I feel it is more sincere than just any other ring. I didn’t think of getting anything else.”
Unlike most conventional brides- to-be, civil servant Michelle Tan has never dreamt of receiving a diamond engagement ring.
The 30-year-old says she never saw the need for one.
“I’ve always wanted something a bit more interesting. As my favourite colour is green I imagined myself being presented with a green stone.”
She is married to software engineering manager Steve Tan, also 30, and they now have a six-month- old son, Ryan.
“I told Steve that I did not want a diamond. Apart from the higher cost, I also read a lot of articles that said the value of diamonds aren’t actually that high. They depreciate after you buy them.”
Her ring, a gold band with a pale green tourmaline, cost about $3,500.
For Mr Tan, the priority was to make sure the ring reflected his wife’s style.
He says: “I knew she wanted a green rock and a gold band. I knew also that she wanted something in a more earthly style, so her ring has a small leaf pattern.”
He had the ring custom-made at local handcrafted jewellery company More Than Diamonds, which has a showroom in Tudor Court in Tanglin Road. The couple went back to the jeweller for their gold wedding bands, which cost $2,800 a pair.
Mr Tan says he is not a fan of diamond rings as they are not practical. “Once you buy a diamond ring, 50 per cent of the value is gone.”
He explains that other precious metals or gems retain their value better or appreciate with time.
The couple met through a mutual friend in 2012, were engaged in 2013 and married in 2014.
Asked about what they thought of the notion that a man should spend double or triple his salary on an engagement ring, Mrs Tan says she does not believe that it should be such a lavish expenditure.
“Money can be better used. To me, saving for a house, for the education of our children, these are more important.”
She spent $400 on her custom- made wedding gown from a local tailor and bought her dinner gown for under $100 from British high- street label Miss Selfridge.
“The wedding lasts only a day, but the marriage is for a lifetime. So I would rather spend on that.”
While discussing their engagement, communications executive Evelyn Tien told her then-fiance she wanted a ring that cost less than $100 and was made out of an eco-friendly material.
“I wanted to give him a challenge,” says the bubbly 29-year-old, who is into recycling and tries her best to stick to green practices such as using fewer plastic bags and carrying a water bottle instead of buying disposable ones.
Explaining the small budget, Mrs Tien says she strongly believes in saving for the more important things in life, a view her husband, Mr Lang Tien, 33, a church ministry staff, shares.
She says: “We were about to commit financially to a lot of things, such as our new flat and the renovations… So we wanted to set aside money for that.”
Cost, say the couple, was not the issue. “We both had savings so if we wanted to, he could have easily bought a more expensive ring. It’s about the idea behind it,” she says.
Mr Tien ended up picking a simple ring shaped like a vine from American online artisanal jewellers www.turtleloveco.com.
The ring is made from recycled sterling silver and cost him about $300, inclusive of shipping.
Though he admits he “busted the budget,” he says he chose the design to match the couples’ wedding Bible verse – one that uses vines and branches to symbolise God’s relationship with Man. A wedding theme based on a Bible verse is common practice in Christian weddings.
Mrs Tien says she “was very impressed” that her husband found something so meaningful.
Asked why she did not want a diamond engagement ring, she says: “We think diamonds are overrated. We didn’t want to conform to society’s idea of what makes an engagement ring suitable.”
The couple, who were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend in 2011, say they were careful about how much they spent on their wedding as well.
After a year-long engagement, they got married in 2014 in a simple church ceremony followed by a lunch reception.
They had minimal decorations and the bride spent about $500 on her custom-made gown from a local dressmaker.
Mr Tien says: “For the wedding car, we drove my nine-year-old manual Nissan. My dad offered his Lexus, but I thought, we had more memories with the Nissan.”
“Most of the time, guests don’t remember what the reception decorations are or what the flowers look like and all those things cost so much money. I think guests remember, instead, whether the event was meaningful.”
Their wedding lunch reception in church cost about $10,000.
Their wedding bands, a mix of rose-gold and white-gold bands from Goldheart, cost $500 for two.
Mrs Tien says she did not feel peer pressure about her ring, although some friends did ask her to show them “the rock” when she told them she was engaged.
“They might have been surprised to see that there was none,” she says.
Though some might think that an engagement ring should cost three times a man’s salary, Mrs Tien says the couple have “chosen to measure love on a less tangible scale.”
She says: “Through dating, we developed healthy communication habits, conflict-resolution skills, patience, selflessness and respect for each other. These are things that we know will tide us through our marriage for a long time.
“For us, that was a greater show of love and security than any expensive ring could ever provide.”
Diamonds still the sparkling choice
Non-diamond engagement rings may be getting more popular, but the classic solitaire diamond ring is still the preferred choice of gem for that all-important proposal.
Major jewellers here say the demand for traditional diamond engagement rings has remained strong over the past few years, with the shift towards other gems not yet becoming mainstream.
Managing director of Tiffany & Co South-east Asia, Ms Chris Lui, says the timeless style of the diamond is part of its appeal.
She says: “The diamond will last a lifetime… The classic solitaire will never go out of style.”
At French luxury goods giant Cartier, diamond engagement rings are selling well at its Singapore stores.
Mr Gregoire Blanche, managing director, Cartier South-east Asia and Oceania, says an engagement ring not only lasts a lifetime, but may also be passed down over generations. “That’s why our clients tend towards classic diamond rings that transcend time and style.”
The promise of forever and the notion that a diamond must be present on an engagement band are concepts etched deeply in the minds of many a blushing bride and strapping groom. But these are concepts that took seed through a marketing campaign.
Diamond giant De Beers launched its first advertising campaign that linked diamonds with love and engagement in the 1930s.
Over the years, its campaigns featured happy couples with sparkling diamond rings. The association between everlasting love and the purchase of a diamond became popular over time.
De Beers is also responsible for stipulating that a man should spend double or triple the amount of his salary on a diamond ring.
One of its advertising campaigns in the 1980s, for instance, featured a woman with a diamond ring and the tagline: “Two months’ salary showed the future Mrs Smith what the future would be like.”
Soon, demand for diamond engagement rings skyrocketed.
According to news broadcaster the British Broadcasting Corporation, before the 1930s, about 10 per cent of engagement rings had diamonds. By the end of the 20th century, 80 per cent did.
In 1999, then chairman of De Beers, Mr Nicky Oppenheimer, admitted that “diamonds are intrinsically worthless, except for the deep psychological need they fill.”
To this day, the attainment of a diamond engagement ring remains ingrained in mainstream culture.
Human resources executive Joe Lim, 29, says that although the recent trend has been for people to go for non-diamond rings, he still wanted a more traditional ring. “I still believe a diamond has sentimental value that is suitable for a proposal. It is not about the price, but the elegance that the diamond communicates.”
He paid about $4,000 for a 0.23-carat diamond solitaire with a silver band from Cartier.
For public relations director Gidania Wong, 32, she says she did not expect anything other than a diamond engagement ring.
“My husband knows I’m more old-fashioned. I’ve always wanted the proposal on one knee, the white gown and long veil. Of course, I wanted a diamond ring.”
Her ring, with a 1.5-carat princess-cut diamond and diamond band, cost about $20,000 and was bought from her husband’s family jeweller.
But the mother of one, whose husband is a relationship manager at a bank, says she would still have said yes if she had not been presented with a diamond ring.
“The wedding is not determined by jewellery,” she says.

Taylor Swift gives surprise show at fan’s wedding reception
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, New Jersey, United States — New Jersey newlyweds got an unexpected gift at their wedding reception: a performance by Taylor Swift.
The superstar played a stripped down version of her song “Blank Space” at Max Singer and Kenya Smith’s reception in Long Beach Township on Saturday as amazed guests looked on and sang along.
Swift agreed to attend after getting a letter in April from the groom’s sister.
She wrote about how her brother was a huge fan and how he and their ailing mother had danced to Swift’s song after the newlyweds were married in a hospital room. Singer’s mother died shortly thereafter.
Swift had contacted Singer’s sister and they planned the surprise visit.
Swift also presented the couple a special card that stated: “So It’s Gonna Be Forever,” a lyric from “Blank Space.”

WATCH: Pia Wurtzbach attends Vic-Pauleen wedding
For weeks, people have speculated if Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach would be able to attend the wedding of her best friend Pauleen Luna with comedian-host Vic Sotto given her incredibly busy schedule.
On Saturday, hours before Sotto and Luna’s wedding, Wurtzbach put the speculations to rest by posting on her Instagram account a video of her riding a car with other members of the entourage. She is one of the bridesmaids in the wedding.
“I am so excited to see my best friend get married,” Wurtzbach exclaimed on the video.
Wurtzbach and Luna started their showbiz careers as teenagers, paving the way for years of friendship.
When Wurtzbach won the Miss Universe title in December, Luna reminisced about their bond.
“I remember we would choose to buy food in Mini Stop instead of Brother’s Burger in ABS because we only had little money. We would patiently go to workshop every single day because we wanna be big stars!… I will never forget those days. Simple and days made up of dreams,” Luna posted on her Instagram account.
Sotto, 61, and Luna, 27, are slated to tie the knot on Saturday evening at St. James the Great Parish in Ayala, Alabang.
They got engaged in September 2015.
Wurtzbach is in the Philippines for her grand homecoming. She had asked the Miss Universe Organization to allow her to extend her stay to attend to personal matters. IDL

He added: "Medyo mahirap i-secure ito dahil nasa open area tayo,
but we had about three months [of] preparations para sa security."
The area enclosed by the barricades will serve as the drop-off point of guests, as well as the bride, he added.
A widescreen has also been set up in front of the cathedral for the
fans to witness the wedding from outside. The wedding ceremony is
scheduled at 2:28 p.m. Tuesday.

event.
For his part, Ramon Salas, captain of Barangay Immaculate Conception, said they prepared for the wedding as early as October.
He said most of the residents there are "excited" that Dantes and Rivera's wedding will take place there.

He added that Dantes is a "son" of the barangay, having been raised there.
"Anak po talaga siya ng Barangay Immaculate at siyempre ipinagmamalaki po namin siya dito," Salas said. —Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/KG, GMA News

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West tie the knot in Italy
Television personality Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West celebrated their wedding on Saturday (May 24) in a castle overlooking the historic city of Florence.
According to city authorities the couple had hired the Belvedere Fort for the night for €300,000 ($408,900) and the event was overseen by a Protestant pastor. As the castle is not normally authorised to hold weddings, it is unclear whether the event will count as a legal marriage ceremony, however.
Few other details leaked out ahead of the lavish festivities. A private security firm kept curious fans, paparazzi and television cameras from getting too close to the site, a Renaissance stronghold with high sloping walls that have been boosted by specially erected privacy screens.
West, 36, a rapper, entrepreneur and self-declared romantic, proposed to 33-year-old reality TV star Kardashian in an empty baseball stadium with a specially hired orchestra, the event shown during an episode of the TV show "Keeping up with the Kardashians."
According to the local La Nazione newspaper, suppliers have been threatened with a $5 million penalty if they reveal details of the event and guests were asked to hand in their mobile phones to stop anyone taking "selfies" or other pictures.
Residents in the San Nicola area of Florence have received letters warning them that the music will be booming out until midnight.
Vanessa Beecroft, an Italian-born artist and friend of West, whose performance art pieces regularly feature groups of nude female models, has set up a show within the fort and has promised to leave one of her works to the city of Florence.
How much the final bill will come to is a closely guarded secret but if past celebrity practice is any guide, the couple may be able to cover some of the expense by showing the wedding on television or selling exclusive coverage rights. — Reuters

Alison Eastwood Marries Stacy Poitras
With proud dad Clint Eastwood looking on, Alison Eastwood tied the knot with sculptor Stacy Poitras of TV's Chainsaw Gang in an intimate ceremony in Calabasas, Calif.
The bride wore a 1930s-inspired beaded gown by Les Habitudes at the Friday night nuptials at the Saddlepeak Lodge before family and friends. The couple's rings were designed by Philip Press.
"We are thrilled to be surrounded by our family for this very special day and appreciate their love and support as we begin our married life together," the couple tell PEOPLE exclusively.
The guests also included Alison's mother Maggie; her jazz musician brother Kyle Eastwood; actor brother Scott Eastwood of Trouble with the Curve; sister Kathryn Eastwood; Clint's wife Dina Eastwood and Poitras's brothers Mark, Matt and Bobby.
Afterwards, the guests dined on a menu that included salmon and elk, with a vegetarian meal for the bride.
Poitras, who stars on the cult hit CMT show as the leader of a band of artists who make sculptures with chainsaws, met the actress five years ago when she rode her horse to his studio at the Rustic Canyon General Store and Grill in Agoura, Calif.
Two years later, he decided to propose – but not before asking her father for his blessing.
"He looked at me for four or five seconds, which felt like 15 minutes, and then he said, 'You're going to have to take that up with her,'" Poistras recalls in the March/April issue of Westlake Magazine. "I said, 'Is that a yes or a no?' And he said, 'That's a yes," and he shook my hand."
Alison then also promptly said yes. They announced their engagement in 2012.
"He's my best friend," she tells Westlake Magazine. "He's the first man who has been the closest person to me."
Eastwood, 40, who is also a producer and director, recently appeared in the documentary American Mustang and the National Geographic Wild's show Animal Intervention, which helps owners of exotic animals find appropriate homes for the animals.
She also launched the Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for animals in need.

- FRJimenez, GMA News

Ashley Biden Is Married
In the same Delaware church where she was baptized, Ashley Biden, the Vice President's daughter, was married Saturday to Philadelphia surgeon Howard Krein.
The couple were wed at the steepled St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, in Greenville, in a ceremony combining the bride's Catholic traditions and the groom's Jewish ones.
Afterward, the newlyweds and some 200 family and close friends headed to the Biden family's lakeside family home in nearby Wilmington for a reception and dinner served family-style in the backyard, which was personally prepped for the big event by the Vice President. In recent weeks, Biden laid fresh sod and his wife, Jill, had planted special fast-growing vines up the latticework around the party tent.
Biden escorted the bride, who wore Vera Wang, down the aisle and had prepared to be emotional about giving away the youngest of his three children.
"I kept telling Ash, we've got to open up the church and practice walking up and down the aisle so I can handle it," the vice president told PEOPLE in the days leading up to the wedding. He reminisced about the only other time he'd seen his daughter in a veil – at her First Communion. "I think to myself, aw, God, my little girl! This can't have passed so quick."
Krein, 45, will surprise his bride Biden, 30, on Saturday night with their honeymoon destination, a family source said. They will make their home in Philadelphia, "just 28 minutes away" from her parents, by the doting Vice President's estimation.
Krein and Biden, a Delaware state social worker who works with troubled children, have been a couple since the summer of 2010, after meeting through Beau Biden, one of her two older brothers. Krein is the son of Bunny Krein, a physician's assistant in cardiology, and Stanley Krein, a retired insurance executive in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Krein proposed last October, at sunset on a cliff in Big Sur, Calif. – but not before getting "Pop's" permission first, said the elder Biden. "This is the right guy," the VP said. "And he's getting a helluva woman."
