Daly hospitalized after on-course collapse - reports

Two-time major winner John Daly was hospitalized on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) after the 49-year-old American collapsed on the course while playing in a minor tournament in Mississippi, according to local media reports.

Daly underwent tests at the hospital in Jackson, with his friend Billy Allen telling reporters that the golfer's vital signs were good and doctors were examining him for possible rib and finger injuries.

Deerfield club professional Leigh Brannan added that Daly was having trouble breathing on the course during a hot day at the tournament.

"He was struggling pretty badly right before he collapsed," Brannan was quoted as saying. "But we're all hoping it's nothing serious and that he was just a little dehydrated. He was even telling (Allen) he still wants to play (on Sunday)." - Reuters

Sleep-deprived kids are more tempted by food

Children who don’t get enough sleep might be more tempted by food, a new study suggests.

Five-year-olds who slept less than 11 hours a night were more eager to eat at the sight or reminder of a favorite snack, compared to those who slept longer, researchers reported in the International Journal of Obesity.

The children who slept less than 11 hours at night also had a higher body mass index – a measure of weight in relation to height – than those who slept 11 hours or more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 11 to 12 hours of sleep for pre-school children.

“There is now accumulating evidence in both children and adults to suggest that short or insufficient sleep increases reward-driven ('hedonic') eating,” said Laura McDonald, the study’s lead author and a researcher at University College London, in email to Reuters Health.

“This is, of course, a concern,” she added, “given that we live in a modern ‘obesogenic’ environment” where tasty, high-calorie foods “are widely available and cheap to consume.”

Previous studies have shown that too little sleep significantly increases the chances that a child will be overweight or obese, McDonald and her team point out. But less was known about how sleep affects daily calorie intake.

“Some studies using brain imaging in adults have shown that sleep restriction increases responsiveness in reward centers of the brain in response to images of palatable food . . . however, no studies in children have examined whether sleep changes food responsiveness,” noted McDonald.

The new study involved 1,008 five-year-olds born in 2007 in England and Wales. The researchers had mothers answer a questionnaire about their youngsters’ responsiveness to food cues and their behavior toward food when they were presumably full, soon after eating.

The average sleep duration for the children in the study was 11.48 hours.

Among kids who slept less than 11 hours a night, food responsiveness was 2.53 on a scale of 1 to 5, compared to 2.36 for those who slept 11 to 12 hours, and 2.35 for those who got at least 12 hours of sleep a night.

“In children who do not get enough sleep at night, limiting exposure to palatable food cues in the home might be helpful at preventing overconsumption,” McDonald said.

The study found no link between sleep duration and whether kids were still willing to eat when they were full.

While the study can’t prove that less sleep causes more eating, McDonald said another possibility is that the reverse might be true. “It is definitely a possibility that food responsiveness might impact sleep behavior,” she said. “For example, it could be that children who are more food responsive are also more difficult to settle at night (when adults or older children might be eating).”

Emerson Wickwire, director of the Insomnia Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told Reuters Health by email that the study adds a new twist to research showing sleep is a risk factor for obesity.

“The current study suggests a new potential explanation (hedonic eating) for weight gain among children who sleep less . . . in other words, kids in the study who slept less were more susceptible to unhealthy food cues in the environment,” said Wickwire, who was not involved in the study.

Wickwire said the study also showed the importance of sleep for children.

“We know that parents have a huge influence on the sleep patterns of five-year-olds. So really, it’s incumbent on parents to make sure their kids are getting enough sleep,” said Wickwire, a board-certified sleep specialist. —Reuters

Apple sets Sept 9 event; new iPhones might be unveiled

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on Thursday invited journalists to a Sept. 9 event, where it is expected to unveil new iPhones and potentially a new version of its Apple TV set-top box.

The email invitation includes a colorful Apple logo with the sentence "Hey Siri, give us a hint," referring to Apple's popular digital voice assistant.

The company traditionally announces its new iPhones in September.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6 Plus S. Typically, the company launches upgraded versions to existing phones under the "S" range.

Media reports have indicated that Apple is preparing for the largest initial production run for its next iPhones by the end of the year.

The new iPhones are also said to feature Force Touch technology, which can distinguish between a light tap and deep press.

Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross said she was also expecting a faster processor on iPhones.

"We assume that they may come out with a new iPad at the event as well," Cross added.

When users posed the question in the invitation to Siri on their iPhones, Siri threw back responses such as "You're cute when you're desperate for information" and "You'll have to wait until Sept. 9. I bet you were one of those kids who snuck downstairs to open presents early, weren't you?"

The event will be held at 10:00 a.m. PT in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, which can hold about 7,000 people.

Apple did not immediately respond to requests for more details on the event.  — Reuters

Oil steadies after strong gains as equities rally

LONDON – Oil prices steadied on Friday after bouncing back from six-and-a-half-year lows on recovering equities markets, strong US economic growth and news of low crude supplies from Nigeria.

Oil saw its biggest one-day bounce since 2009 on Thursday, with North Sea Brent and US light crude  rising more than 10 percent. US crude is on track for its first weekly gain in nine weeks, ending its longest losing streak since 1986.

Global oil markets have fallen by a third since May and are still well under half their value a year ago thanks to a huge oversupply of fuel and sluggish demand. Worries over China's economy have compounded the falls in recent weeks.

But analysts said oil markets fell too far, too fast and a rebound was on the cards. A stock market rise, strong US growth data and a pipeline outage in Nigeria provided an excuse for a recovery on Thursday, they added.

"A short-covering rally, led by crude oil, pushed commodities higher across the board," analysts at ANZ said in a note to clients.

"Better-than-expected US GDP numbers were the main spark, although the force majeure on... exports from Nigeria extended the gains."

Brent was down 15 cents at $47.41 a barrel by 1015 GMT. It settled $4.42 higher at $47.56 on Thursday. US crude was unchanged at $42.56 a barrel, after ending up $3.96.

Asian shares extended a global rally on Friday with Chinese stocks jumping for the second day following a rocky start to the week.

The US economy grew faster than initially thought in the second quarter on solid domestic demand. Gross domestic product expanded at a 3.7 percent annual pace instead of the 2.3 percent rate reported last month, the Commerce Department said.

Shell's Nigerian unit declared force majeure on Bonny Light crude oil exports on Thursday after shutting two key pipelines in the country due to a leak and theft.

Venezuela has been contacting other members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, pushing for an emergency meeting with Russia to come up with a plan to boost oil prices, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Officials at core OPEC members in the Middle East Gulf say there is little chance of the cartel meeting without the support of Saudi Arabia, which has said it sees no need for a gathering. – Reuters

Watch out! Google may be secretly recruiting you

Google’s apparently always on the lookout for new recruits, even when and where you least expect them.

According to Max Rosett, writing for The Hustle, he was Googling programming terms—”python lambda function list comprehension” if you’re curious—when suddenly the results page folded back to show a question.

Deciding that it wasn’t some sort of virus and ignoring that the question (and possible answers) seemed like something out of The Matrix or Saw, Rosett decided to go for it and clicked, “I want to play.”

He ended up on a page called “foo.bar.” where he started solving programming challenges. After the sixth one, Rosett had the option to submit his contact information. Long story short, Rosett ended up spending a day at the Google headquarters for a more formal interview which led to a job offer.

If you access foo.bar for the first time, you’ll encounter a log-in page. Your Google account won’t work if you try to access it—the page will just tell you, “To log in, you have to have logged in before,” which means that you need to have gotten there via Googling something.

“Foo.bar is a brilliant recruiting tactic. Google used it to identify me before I had even applied anywhere else, and they made me feel important while doing so,” Rosett said. “At the same time, they respected my privacy and didn’t reach out to me without explicitly requesting my information.” — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News

Asian shares resume slide on fears over Chinese economy

TOKYO - Asian stocks looked vulnerable to another sell-off on Tuesday, with investors gripped by fears of a hard landing for the Chinese economy, the world's most important growth engine.

Japan's Nikkei index fell 3.8 percent to six-month lows while the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan hit fresh three-year lows.

Underlining concerns about China, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Tuesday he hoped China would take action to stabilize its economy and that Tokyo had no plan for now to unveil its own new economic stimulus package.

MSCI's all country world index fell 3.8 percent on Monday to a 10 1/2-month low, its biggest fall in almost four years. It has lost 9.2 percent over five days.

Leading the losses were Chinese shares, which plunged more than 8 percent to post their biggest losses since 2007 on heightened worries that the Chinese economy was growing at a much slower pace than Beijing's 7 percent target for 2015.

Investors are also unnerved by uncertainty over US monetary policy. The Federal Reserve has said it plans to raise interest rates this year for the first time in almost a decade.

The heavy fall in share prices worldwide over the past week has sharply reduced expectations of a US rate hike in September, but the outlook is far from clear.

"There seems to be no consensus with the Fed on whether they are worried about acting too prematurely or too late," Toru Yamamoto, chief bond strategist at Daiwa Securities, said in report.

The S&P 500 Index fell 3.9 percent to a 10-month low on Monday. The CBOE volatility index, a key measure of US equity volatility, shot up to more than 50 percent at one point for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Because some investors often fund their investment in risk assets by borrowing low-yielding euro and yen, the sell-off in shares helped send both currencies to seven-month highs.

The euro rose as high as $1.1715 and last stood at $1.1571 while the yen strengthened to 116.15 to the dollar before stepping back to 118.80.

The dollar was not helped by falls in US bond yields either, which diminishes the currency's yield attraction.

The 10-year US Treasuries yield fell to a four-month low of 1.905 percent in choppy trade on Monday and last stood at 2.012 percent.

Oil prices plunged more than 6 percent on Monday to 6 1/2-year lows after the dive in Chinese equities market.

US crude futures traded at $38.38 per barrel, near Monday's low of $37.75.

Brent crude futures fell to $42.23 on Monday and last stood at $42.69.

Brent stood not far from $36.20, its low hit in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, having fallen more than 66 percent from last year's peak.

Copper, a good indicator of global economic activity because of its wide use, declined to a six-year low of $4,855 a tonne, falling more than 52 percent from its 2011.

The fall in commodity prices have hurt many commodity exporting countries' currencies.

The Australian dollar traded at $0.7177, having fallen to a 6-1/2-year low of $0.7044 on Monday. —Reuters

iPhone app wants you to 'poop for a purpose'

A mobile application released just last week allows iPhone users to chat with their friends and mostly strangers while they sit on the throne; and by throne, yes, the developers mean toilet.

The app is called “Pooductive” and the developers want users to “poop for a purpose.”

Pooductive, however, does not only function as a real-time messaging application while you do your business; it also seeks to raise awareness for people across the globe who have no access to clean water.

“We hope to connect Pooductive with some big charities that focus on both clean water and improving hygiene in developing countries,” the developers said.

On their website, the application developers opened a fundraising campaign to help at least 663 million people get access to clean water.

As of this writing, only $60 or around P2,700 has been raised.

“Think of it as a magical place where people from around the globe can anonymously meet to enjoy their time of zen, peace and tranquility together, by conversing, philosophising and sharing ideas with each other,” the developers said.

Pooductive allows users to add and chat with friends, as well as have group chats, like any other messaging application.

But the developers say “it's so much more” than a messaging app, calling it a “community, made up of people who are all in the same position as you…pardon the pun.”

Users can choose either to chat with other users near them based on their location, or they can chat with the global community. The app allows users to choose the distance radius of their chat partners. —Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/ALG, GMA News

Final Fantasy VII comes to iOS devices

Even though a remake of Final Fantasy VII is confirmed and on the way, it will still be a long wait until fans of the classic JRPG finally get their hands on it when it comes first to Playstation 4 first and other next generation platforms soon after. Fortunately, Square Enix has come up with a good way to reignite those nostalgia taste buds for those who are constantly on the go, as the iOS version of Final Fantasy VII has officially hit the App Store and is now ready for download anytime, anywhere, according to The Next Web.

As a port of the PC version released on Steam in 2013, the iOS version of FFVII was announced by Square Enix on E3 this year for a summer release.  They pretty much kept their word on that promise, and the game is now available to download for iOS powered devices such as the iPhone 5S, iPad mini 2, and the 3rd Generation iPad. The game requires iOS 8.0 and 4GB worth of space to download, and 2GB of memory to play and install, so it’s wise to free up memory before purchasing the game, which costs $15.99.

Click here to download Final Fantasy VII for iOS.

What’s interesting about the iOS version is that Square Enix not only incorporated touch controls, but also giving players the option to turn off random encounters in the game. That pretty much means that fans can speed run and avoid unnecessary battles if they want to finish the game fast.

Interesting enough, the launch trailer is the exact same one Square Enix used to announce the disappointing Playstation 4 port of the PC Version of Final Fantasy VII – which preceded the news and official announcement of the remake that happened on E3 this year.

Originally released in 1997 for the original Sony Playstation, Final Fantasy VII followed the story of a mercenary named Cloud Strife and a renegade group called AVALANCHE as they sought to save the planet from the abuse and evil machinations of the Shinra Electric Power Company. Along the course of the adventure, Cloud recovers his true memories and tries to come to terms with his past, bonding with his allies and meeting new challenges, which includes combating his former idol turned enemy in Sephiroth. — GMA News

Thai police release sketch of Bangkok bomb suspect

This image released by the Royal Thai Police on Wednesday, August 19, shows the photofit of a man suspected to be the Bangkok bomber, seen on security footage leaving a backpack at a shrine moments before a bomb detonated, killing 20 people and wounding scores more on August 17. Thai police released the detailed sketch of the suspected Bangkok bomber, who "might be foreign or Thai," according to national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri. AFP/Royal Thai Police

CCTV footage

On Tuesday, a day after the bombing at a religious shrine in Bangkok's busy Ratchaprasong commercial district, police released grainy closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of a young man wearing a yellow t-shirt.

The man is shown in CCTV footage dumping a backpack and walking away from the scene of the blast minutes before the explosion.

Police have said the man is a suspect but that others could be behind the attack. They have not ruled out any group, including elements opposed to the military government, though they said it did not match the tactics of Moro insurgents in the south or 'red shirt' supporters of the previous administration.

The sketch, say police, could help locate the yellow-shirted man seen in the CCTV footage. A 1 million baht ($28,000) reward has been offered to anyone who can give police information leading to his arrest.

Police also said they would take the sketch to a court and ask that an arrest warrant be issued for a man matching the description.

"We think the investigation team will ask for the arrest warrant tonight," said police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri.

Police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang told a news conference that it was not clear how many people were involved in the attack or if they were still in the country.

At the same news conference, spokesman Prawut said "two to three" people had been questioned by police since the attack. — Reuters

Chicken, pizza and ‘third wave’ coffee at Frank & Dean

As a freelance writer, I’m used to lugging around my laptop and looking for a coffee shop to settle down to work—preferably one with the aromatic smell of freshly brewed coffee. Plenty of chain establishments are readily available, but I like the vibe that third-wave coffee shops exude.

Frank & Dean Café x Kitchen is the only "third wave" coffee place—that is, a place that buys coffee based on its origins and its method of production—in the Bonifacio Global City area. Its interiors have an industrial yet homey feel, with steel-backed upholstered chairs, lighting fixtures with metal frames, wood wall panels and brick accents. The big blackboard menu complements the trendy atmosphere. I spied a big group of corporate folks having a meeting during my visit. It seems like a good place to do meet-ups or simply hang out with your cup of joe.

Getting food inspiration from travels

I assumed that this independently owned and operated coffee shop would serve typical café fare like sandwiches and pastries, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that there’s actually pizza and fried chicken!

"Before we started putting up Frank & Dean, we already knew it was going to be about: first and foremost, coffee, fried chicken and pizza," said managing partner Miguel Escueta. "Mainly because Filipinos love coffee shops, pizza joints, and they love fried chicken. The goal was really to create great products and offer it in a hip and cool place.”

Indeed, coffee is front and center, as apparent in the list of menu items on the blackboard, the coffee machine in the counter, the word “coffee” in blue neon lights, and the little conversation pieces scattered around the area.

This is not Escueta’s first food venture. He is also a co-owner in Pablo’s Pub and Restaurant, inspired by Pablo Escobar. He and business partners Nicolo Villonco, Tania Villonco and Jam Mabanta thought of naming the coffee shop after someone famous as well—thus, Frank & Dean, after Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

“[It’s] very Rat-Pack inspired,” said Escueta. “The first floor is really about coffee and brew. If you walk up, our alcohol display will be there, and a lot of drinking has been happening in the al fresco area.”

Though he doesn’t have formal culinary training, Escueta's travels inspired him to venture into the food business. “This inspiration [for Frank & Dean] really sprung forth from the traveling we did in New York—the chicken and waffle thing is very in, New York-style pizza, and the coffee shop. Everything is in,” he said.

Coffee and doughnuts

Frank & Dean opens as early as 7 a.m., perfect for those who live in the nearby residential condominiums or offices, and dishes up all-day breakfast fare that’s not your usual “silog” meal.

Stand-out dishes are the Truffle Scrambled Eggs (three eggs, drops of truffle oil, homemade hash), One-Eyed Jack (over-easy egg, brioche slices, ham, cheddar, drizzled with parmesan and maple syrup), Eggs Ben on Brioche (two poached eggs, bacon strips, hollandaise sauce), and Salmon Rosti (smoked salmon, homemade hash, sour cream, capers, arugula, poached egg). From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., these all-day breakfast meals come with free basic brew.

But the true must-tries are the F&D pizza and the Southern fried chicken with waffles.

I tried the 12-inch, New York-style pepperoni pizza. To consume it, just do the hold-and-fold technique: pick up a slice, fold it, and eat it with your bare hands. Best eaten with the homemade chili powder—just make sure to put only a dash as it is somewhat potent.

I couldn’t leave the place without sampling the Southern fried chicken with waffles. The breading had the right thickness and was flavorful, too. The crispy skin was the best part, but the tender and moist meat deserves special mention as well. I made sure to get a good ratio of skin, meat and waffle with my every bite. It went really well with the homemade gravy.

Even with a full belly, I managed to cap off my meal with Frank & Dean’s basic brew—100% locally sourced Arabica—and a serving of old-fashioned doughnut.

I didn’t bother to put a lot of sugar in my drink since the doughnut was topped with loads of powdered sugar. I just drizzled it with some warm milk and went on to indulge in my daily dose of caffeine. The basic brew was pretty strong—for my standards, at least. I felt my energy perk up right away and it lasted me throughout the day.

The doughnut is another story. Unlike the light and airy ones that I’m used to, this one was more dense and had a sour tinge to the dough, which actually balanced well with the plain powdered sugar topping. Though heavy and filling, I managed to down the whole serving that went perfectly well with my bitter coffee.

Frank & Dean will offer a coffee-doughnut combo soon, so watch out for that! Also, from 10 p.m. to midnight, you can get the doughnuts for 50 percent off.

The establishment is also planning to do Saturday workshops—on coffee, calligraphy, cocktails, "anything under the sun," said Escueta.

I’ll make sure to bring my laptop next time around. — BM, GMA News

Frank & Dean Café x Kitchen (+63 917 835-1335) at Forbes Town Center, Forbes Town Road, Bonifacio Global City is open every day: from 7 a.m. to midnight from Sundays to Thursdays and from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Alden causes stir online after using Yaya Dub's real name in sign

AlDub was once again the country's top trending topic on Wednesday on Twitter during the latest installment of Eat Bulaga's kalye-serye.

But it was a small detail on a sign flashed by Alden Richards to Yaya Dub that caught the eye of fans.

He wrote "Alden ♥ Maine" on the sign, using her real name instead of her screen character.

Wally Bayola, playing the liberated DuhRizz in the sketch, jumped in to make fun of the development, saying that her real name was "DuhRizz Maine."

But fans of AlDub on Twitter quickly jumped on this small detail, as they expressed hope that things would go from reel to real.

Thai govt: Suspect identified in 'worst ever' bombing

Thailand's junta leader said Tuesday a suspect had been identified in the bombing of a packed Bangkok religious shrine, condemning the blast that killed at least 20 people as the "worst ever attack" on the kingdom.

The blast occurred on Monday in one of the Thai capital's most popular tourism hubs, ripping through a crowd of worshippers at the Hindu shrine close to five-star hotels and upscale shopping malls.

Chinese, Hong Kong, Singaporean, Indonesian and Malaysian citizens were among the 20 people killed, police said.

More than 100 other people were injured as the blast left body parts strewn across crushed pavement, alongside shattered windows and incinerated motorcycles.

Junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha on Tuesday branded the bombing the "worst ever attack" on Thailand, as he said the hunt was on for a suspicious man filmed on closed circuit television near the shrine.

"Today there is a suspect... we are looking for this guy," Prayut told reporters.

Police released CCTV footage showing the apparently young man in a yellow T-shirt walking near the shrine wearing a backpack, but then a short time later walking away without it.

"Things are becoming clearer now," Defence Minisiter Prawit Wongsuwon told reporters, although he declined to give details and authorities did not reveal if they had any motives for the attack.

Bangkok has endured a decade of deadly political violence amid a power struggle between the military, backed by the middle class and elite, and the poor led by populist politician Thaksin Shinawatra.

He is living in self-imposed exile after being ousted as premier in 2006. The junta has ruled the nation since May last year after toppling the elected government of Thaksin's sister, Yingluck.

Bangkok's power struggle has seen repeated rounds of deadly street protests and bombings for nearly a decade.

More than 90 people were killed in 2010 during clashes between security forces and Thaksin supporters -- many in the same area as Monday's bomb.

But the anti-junta groups have never conducted such a large attack, nor one that was apparently aimed at a tourist zone.

No obvious culprit

And with no-one claiming responsibility for Monday's assault, political and security experts said there was no obvious culprit.

Zachary Abuza, an independent expert on Thai security, told AFP he doubted it was in the interests of the anti-junta groups to carry out such an attack.

"Even if they are hell-bent on bringing down the government I just can't see them targeting a Hindu or any other religious shrine," Zachary Abuza, an independent expert on Thai security, told AFP.

"That would really alienate many of their supporters."

Muslim rebels from the country's far south have also waged a separatist insurgency for more than a decade that has claimed thousands of lives, mostly civilians.

But they have never been known to carry out substantial attacks in Bangkok, and Abuza as well as other analysts said Monday's bombing did not follow the insurgents' typical modus operandi.

Paul Chambers, director of research at the Institute of South East Asian Affairs in Thailand, said groups with links to military factions also had to be considered as potential suspects.

Various Islamic militant groups have also carried out many attacks in other parts of Southeast Asia, including on Indonesia's holiday island of Bali in 2002 that killed 202 people.

But they have not made Thailand a prime target.

Tourists 'targeted'

Junta leaders said the bomb was obviously aimed at damaging the country's tourist industry, which is a rare bright spot in an otherwise gloomy economy, and tarnishing the junta's reputation.

"(The attackers) had the clear target of destroying our economy and tourism.... and discrediting the government," Wongsuwon, the defence minister, told reporters.

Thailand's baht currency slumped to a more than six-year low on Tuesday and shares fell in Bangkok over concerns the attack could damage the tourism sector.

Built in 1956, the Erawan is an enormously popular shrine to the Hindu god Brahma but is visited by thousands of Buddhist devotees every day.

The bomb was detonated shortly before 7:00 pm (1200 GMT) in the middle of the city's rush hour, sending a fireball into the sky as commuters and tourists fled in panic.

Thais walking near the blast site on Tuesday expressed fear about more potential violence in the coming days.

"I'm worried about Bangkok, I don't know what will happen next," one woman, who gave her name as Rivewan, told AFP.

Adding to the tensions, a small explosion struck near a busy Bangkok train station on Tuesday afternoon, but police said nobody was injured.

Around 1,000 people queued for hours at a blood donation centre near the blast site on Tuesday, many crying as they waited to be seen by nurses.

"This shouldn't have happened to the Thai people," Pongchai Kulsitthiwong, a 45-year-old mobile phone seller told AFP, tears rolling down his cheeks while waiting to give blood.

Monday's attack drew quick expressions of grief from around the world. The US government released a statement warning its citizens to avoid the area, while also voicing sympathy for the victims. —Agence France-Presse

Android unveils sweet surprise: Android 6.0 Marshmallow

The ‘M’ in ‘Android M’ apparently stands for ‘marshmallow.’ In a post on the Android Developers Blog, Android revealed the final Developer Preview update for their new operating system and its final software development kit (SDK). They also announced that developers can now also publish their Marshmallow-targeted apps on Google Play.

The final Android 6.0 Marshmallow SDK can be downloaded using the SDK Manager in Android Studio. “With the Android 6.0 SDK you have access to the final Android APIs and the latest build tools so that you can target [application program interface] API 23,” the blog post said.

According to tech site The Verge, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow is set for release in the latter part of 2015.

“Along with the new platform features like fingerprint support and Doze power saving mode, Android Marshmallow features a new permissions model that streamlines the app install and update process,” the Android blog post said. — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News

A Filipino among dozens killed in Bangkok bombing –Thai police

BANGKOK  -  A Filipino was among the 27 people killed when a bomb on a motorcycle exploded on Monday just outside a Hindu shrine in the Thai capital, media reported, in an attack the government said was a bid to destroy the economy.

Two people from China and one from the Philippines were among the dead, a tourist police officer said. Domestic media said 27 people had been killed, 10 of them men and 17 women.

Police said 78 people were wounded. Media said most of them were from China and Taiwan.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast at the Erawan shrine at a major city-center intersection. Thai forces are fighting a low-level Muslim insurgency in the predominantly Buddhist country's south, but those rebels have rarely launched attacks outside their ethnic Malay heartland.

"The perpetrators intended to destroy the economy and tourism, because the incident occurred in the heart of the tourism district," Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan told Reuters.

The Erawan shrine, on a busy corner near top hotels, shopping centers, offices and a hospital, is a major attraction, especially for visitors from East Asia, including China. Many ordinary Thais also worship there.

The government would set up a "war room" to coordinate the response to the blast, the Nation television channel quoted Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha as saying.

"It was like a meat market," said Marko Cunningham, a New Zealand paramedic working with a Bangkok ambulance service, who said the blast had left a two-meter-wide (6-foot-) crater.

"There were bodies everywhere. Some were shredded. There were legs where heads were supposed to be. It was horrific," Cunningham said, adding that people several hundred metres away had been injured.

POLITICAL TENSION

At the scene, authorities ordered onlookers back, saying they were checking for a second bomb.

"We are now looking for another two to three bombs, as we have found one suspicious object," national police chief Prawut Thawornsiri told Reuters.

"There could be another explosion, so we have blocked off the crime scene and are asking bystanders to move back."

Authorities stepped up security checks at some major city intersections and in tourist areas.

While initial suspicion might fall on Muslim separatists in the south, Thailand has been riven for a decade by an intense and sometimes violent struggle for power between political factions in Bangkok.

Occasional small blasts have been blamed on one side or the other. Two pipe bombs exploded outside a luxury shopping mall in the same area in February, but caused little damage.

Police said that attack was aimed at raising tension when the city was under martial law.

The army has ruled Thailand since May 2014, when it ousted an elected government after months of at times violent anti-government protests.

The shrine intersection was the site of months of anti-government protests in 2010 by supporters of ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Dozens were killed in a military crackdown and a shopping centre was set ablaze.  — Reuters

Scientists researching brain disorders create super-clever mice

Scientists have genetically modified mice to be super-intelligent and found they are also less anxious, a discovery that may help the search for treatments for disorders such as Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Researchers from Britain and Canada found that altering a single gene to block the phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B) enzyme, which is found in many organs including the brain, made mice cleverer and at the same time less fearful.

"Our work using mice has identified phosphodiesterase-4B as a promising target for potential new treatments," said Steve Clapcote, a lecturer in pharmacology at Britain's Leeds University, who led the study.

He said his team is now working on developing drugs that will specifically inhibit PDE4B. The drugs will be tested first in animals to see whether any of them might be suitable to go forward into clinical trials in humans.

In the experiments, published on Friday in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, the scientists ran a series of behavioural tests on the PDE4B-inhibited mice and found they tended to learn faster, remember events longer and solve complex problems better than normal mice.

The "brainy" mice were better at recognising a mouse they had seen the previous day, the researchers said, and were also quicker at learning the location of a hidden escape platform.

They were also less able to recall a fearful event after several days than ordinary mice, and as PDE4B is also found in humans, this could be of interest in the search for treatments for brain conditions as well as mental decline linked to ageing.

The experiments also showed that PDE4B-inhibited mice suffered less anxiety, choosing to spend more time in open, brightly lit spaces than normal mice, which preferred dark, enclosed spaces.

And while mice are naturally scared of cats, the modified mice responded less fearfully to cat urine, suggesting that inhibiting PDE4B could increase risk-taking behaviour. (Editing by Louise Ireland) — Reuters

Australian Jones moves two ahead at Whistling Straits

KOHLER, Wisconsin - Unheralded Australian Matt Jones birdied two of his last six holes to seize a two-shot lead when the storm-delayed second round of the PGA Championship was completed at Whistling Straits on Saturday.

Making only his eighth appearance in a major, Jones sank a 15-foot putt at the par-four sixth before draining a 50-footer at the eighth on the way to a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 on a glorious sun-splashed morning by the shores of Lake Michigan.

That left him at 11-under 133 and two ahead of his compatriot Jason Day, who briefly held the outright lead at 10 under before he bogeyed the tricky par-four 18th to card a 67.

"I played great," said journeyman Jones, a 35-year-old who won his first PGA Tour title at last year's Houston Open.

"I putted really well. My speed on the greens has been really good.

"It's amazing to be in the lead at a major. I've been in the lead on a Tour event, but a major's a different story. I'm going to have fun with it. I'm pretty relaxed on the golf course."

World number five Day, still seeking a first major title after several close calls, was pleased after recording seven birdies and two bogeys in the second round.

"I gave myself opportunities on the greens, didn't really hit it close on 17 and 18, but overall I feel pretty happy with the position I'm in going into round three," said Day.

England's Justin Rose, among the 57 players still out on the course when play was suspended for the day on Friday after a thunderstorm rolled through the area, was at eight under after parring his final hole for a 67.

"Nice to wrap up the second round," said Rose, the 2013 U.S. Open champion. "A bunch of birdies, which was nice. From today's point of view, nice to finish with a strong par at the last."

Spieth spotlight

Much of the focus, however, remained on the remarkable Jordan Spieth who carded a 67 on Friday and was five strokes off the pace when the second round was completed as he bids to carve out another slice of golf history and join an elite club.

Masters and U.S. Open champion Spieth is seeking to join fellow Americans Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods as the only players in the modern era to win three majors in a single year.

Hogan was the first to complete the hat-trick, in 1953, and Woods followed suit in 2000.

"I feel good, I got a chance to win a major championship," said Spieth, who fell agonizingly short in his quest to land the year's first three majors when he tied for fourth in last month's British Open, one shot shy of joining a playoff.

World number one Rory McIlroy, back in action to defend his PGA Championship crown after five weeks out due to an ankle injury, was at two under after carding a 71 on Friday.

Four-times winner Woods, however, plunged new depths when he missed the cut in a third successive major for the first time in his career after carding a one-over 73 in the second round.

The former world number one had left himself with plenty to do after putting poorly on the way to an opening 75 and despite improved play in the second round, he finished two strokes outside the cutline.

Also among those failing to advance were British Open champion Zach Johnson, 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott and Padraig Harrington, who clinched the PGA Championship in 2008. — Reuters

George Soros sells off most of his Alibaba stocks

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - American billionaire George Soros's fund has sold most of its stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, according to regulatory filings Friday.

In its quarterly statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Soros Funds Management said that as of June 30, it had sold all but nearly 60,000 Alibaba shares, valued at $4.88 million.

At the end of March, the fund still had 4.4 million shares valued at nearly $370 million.

Similarly, the Tiger Global Management investment fund reduced its stake in the Chinese group from 6.7 million shares at the end of March to just 93,494 shares three months later, filings show.

Alibaba reached historic highs in November, two months after its initial public offering on Wall Street but it has since lost 37 percent of its value.

The group's latest quarterly results, published this week, showed a more pronounced slowdown than expected in sales growth, disappointing Wall Street.

The two largest shareholders of Alibaba are still Japan's SoftBank (31.75 percent at the end of 2014) and Yahoo (15.27 percent).

Founded by Jack Ma in 1999, Alibaba is China's biggest e-commerce company but is seeking to expand beyond its traditional business.

The Chinese company and Amazon are considered competitors in some areas, but unlike the US firm which makes its own e-book reader, Alibaba has no products of its own and simply provides a trading platform. — Agence France-Presse

At least 40 migrants die in Mediterranean – Italian navy

ROME - At least 40 migrants have died in the hold of a boat in the Mediterranean, probably from suffocation, the Italian news agency ANSA reported on Saturday.

The Italian navy confirmed the deaths but gave no other details. It said the naval vessel Cigala Fulgosi was leading the rescue mission and had saved many other people.

ANSA said the boat was 21 miles off the coast of Libya and carrying about 400 migrants. — Reuters

Defective Car Parts and California’s “Lemon Law”

Automobiles that include defective parts can be dangerous and can cause serious accidents, injuring passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. Such accidents can result in expensive personal injury suits, but it can cost a lot of money to replace a defective car part. Fortunately, California has a lemon law that allows car owners to receive compensation for defective parts.

The Lemon Law

When a defective car part substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of a new car purchased or leased in California, the owner or lessee is often able to receive compensation under California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, more commonly known as the lemon law.

This statute gives automobile manufacturers 18 months or 18,000 miles to attempt repairs on any newly released vehicles. If a vehicle still has at least one of two covered defects within the warranty period, then it can be legally considered a “lemon,” and the owner can receive compensation. California’s lemon law covers:

  • A serious defect that the manufacturer was unable to repair in at least four attempts; or
  • Defects that have caused the vehicle to be out of service for at least 30 cumulative days since it was purchased.
  •
Compensation

If the car qualifies as a lemon, then the owner of the vehicle has two choices. First, he or she can request that the manufacturer either replace or repair it. If the owner chooses this option, then the manufacturer must also reimburse the owner for sales tax, registration, and incidental damages, such as finance charges or any costs associated with repair, towing, or renting a replacement car.

Alternatively, the owner can request a refund for the original price paid for the car. To be eligible for these options, the person seeking compensation must have purchased or leased the car from someone engaged in the business of manufacturing, selling, leasing, or distributing new vehicles at retail in California. In the case of a lease, the term agreed upon must exceed four months to satisfy the requirements of the lemon law. Finally, the car must be intended for personal, business, or family use.

Owner’s Responsibilities

In order to receive compensation for the defective vehicle, the owner is required to have followed the warranty terms for maintenance and proper use of the car. It is also the responsibility of the owner to bring a suit based on a violation of the lemon law within the four-year statute of limitations. Furthermore, items installed by anyone other than the manufacturer cannot be included in the amount refunded. It is also helpful to maintain good records of any repairs made to the vehicle. Each repair order should show the defect and the dates that the car was in the shop.

Purchasing a vehicle with a defective part can be expensive, time-consuming, and stressful, especially if the defect causes an accident and harms you or others. Driverless Vehicles and Personal Injury

Recently, Google’s prototype driverless cars have been navigating the roads around Mountain View, California. They have been involved in two recent accidents, though the accidents were non-serious in nature, and were caused by other drivers. In one incident, the Google car was rear-ended at five miles per hour, while stopped at a red light. Both cars suffered minor scrapes to their bumpers. The other accident also involved a Google car being rear-ended at a red light, but at less than one mile per hour, and neither vehicle was damaged. No injuries were reported in either crash.

A Google car and another self-driving car, from Delphi, were reported to have nearly had an accident during a lane change in Palo Alto, when one car cut off the other. Fortunately, the second car was able to change back into its original lane, avoiding the collision.

California’s Driverless Car Law

Only five states, including California, allow driverless cars on public roads. In 2012, the California state legislature passed a law permitting driverless vehicles to operate, for testing purposes, on the roads. There are, however, strict limitations to their operation:

  • A licensed driver must be in the car at all times;
  • The driver must be ready and able to take over control should the automatic controls fail;
  • The driver must have been licensed for at least three years, must not have caused any accidents resulting in personal injury or death, must not have been convicted of driving under the influence in the past 10 years, and must take special driving classes; and
  • The car manufacturer must maintain $5 million in liability insurance.
  •
California’s law also requires driverless cars to have a mechanism that captures sensor data from the autonomous technology for at least 30 seconds prior to a crash, while the car is operating in automatic mode. This technology will help to determine how crashes occur.

Personal Injury Concerns

Driverless cars may be safer than regular cars. Google and other manufacturers claim that they are because they eliminate the element of human error, which is the cause of a majority of accidents. But others, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are not so sure. No car is perfect, and some accidents not caused by humans are bound to happen.

But what happens when a driverless car inevitably does cause an accident? One major issue is determining who is liable for the harm, the owner or the manufacturer. It is likely that accidents caused by self-driving cars will become a product liability issue. This would mean that liability would shift away from the owner or individual, and to the manufacturer, designer, or vendor.

The requirement for a data capture mechanism may also help to determine how crashes occur and how to assign liability. It may be able to help insurers and courts figure out whether a car malfunctioned, an injured person was contributorily negligent, or something else caused the crash.

If you have been injured in an auto accident, whether from a driver’s negligence or a vehicle malfunction, an attorney can help you recover compensation for your harm. Please contact the experienced San Jose personal injury attorneys at Corsiglia, McMahon & Allard, L.L.P. for a free consultation.

Emma Watson, designers talk about gender equality in fashion

For an industry where women are in the spotlight, the fashion world still has more room to grow in terms of gender equality, insiders revealed to actress Emma Watson.

Designers Jonathan Saunders, Bella Freud, Erdem Moralioglu, and Stella McCartney joined Watson, who is also United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador, in a discussion about the sexism behind the dazzling world of fashion for the HeforShe campaign.

"I want to get this conversation, this dialogue happening specifically within the fashion industry to ask the leading voices about gender equality," Watson said in the video.

Freud brought up the lack of equal pay as one of the problems in the fashion industry. McCartney, on the other hand, said there are challenges in getting maternity and paternity leaves.

Despite these shortcomings, the fashion designers say they understand the industry's role in pushing gender equality.

"I think the fashion industry has a big role to play. It has a huge voice... We need to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes, and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable in who they are," McCartney said.

Saunders added that the fashion industry should be more conscious about how their subjects are portrayed.

"I think it's a big subject about how women are portrayed through imagery in fashion. That is where we need to be really careful with the images that we produce. That it's something that empowers women instead of making them look weaker or more fragile," he said.

But the fashion heavyweights are hopeful for the future of gender equality not just in their industry but in all corners of the world.

"I think the world is evolving into a place where your sex isn't going to limit you in any way, shape, or form," Moralioglu pointed out.

Freud said that at its core, gender equality is really about respect.

"The more people in general are treated with respect and fairness, then the imbalance between men and women will be naturally addressed," she said.

Watson launched the HeForShe campaign in September 2014, a few months after she was named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in July in the same year. According to the actress, the campaign is about "men coming in support of women and women supporting men to achieve gender equality."

Watson is most known for her role as the brainy Hermione Granger who stood up for the rights of a minority group in the Harry Potter series. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News

OPEC says cheap oil taking longer to subdue rival suppliers

LONDON  - OPEC on Tuesday raised its forecast of oil supplies from non-member countries in 2015, a sign that crude's price collapse is taking longer than expected to hit U.S. shale drillers and other competing sources.

In a monthly report, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) forecast no extra demand for its crude oil this year despite faster global growth in consumption, because of higher-than-expected production from the United States and other countries outside the group.

In contrast, the U.S. government on Tuesday lowered both its 2015 and 2016 U.S. oil production forecasts, signalling that the 60-percent rout in benchmark prices since last summer may finally be weighing on shale output.

The U.S. 2015 crude oil production growth forecast was cut by 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 650,000 bpd from the previous report, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's short-term energy outlook. Meanwhile, it expanded the production decline forecast for 2016 by 400,000 bpd from a 150,000 bpd decline previously.

Benchmark Brent is trading below $50 a barrel, close to its 2015 low after an 18 percent drop in July. But OPEC has refused to cut output, seeking to recover market share by slowing higher-cost production in the United States and elsewhere that had been encouraged by OPEC's prior policy of keeping prices near $100.

Earlier this year, OPEC slashed its prediction of non-OPEC supply for 2015, expecting lower prices to prompt a slowdown. But on Tuesday, it raised the forecast by about 90,000 bpd following a 220,000-bpd increase in last month's report.

"U.S. onshore production from unconventional sources is currently expected to decline marginally in the second half of 2015 through year-end, while U.S. offshore production is expected to grow due to project start-ups," OPEC said.

Meanwhile, the EIA decreased its forecast of non-OPEC supply on Tuesday, lowering 2015 output by 50,000 bpd and 2016 output by 80,000 bpd compared to the previous month's report.

U.S. energy companies have been adding drilling rigs in recent weeks despite the price drop, and OPEC in the report raised its forecast of U.S. output in 2015 by 20,000 bpd. In March, OPEC was expecting a fall in production possibly by late 2015 as drilling subsided, although more recent data from the EIA shows that output peaked in March.

"OPEC is starting to recognise the resilience of U.S. shale," said Jamie Webster, analyst at IHS in Washington and an OPEC expert.

Oil prices fell after the report was released, extending an earlier drop. Brent crude was down $1.34 at $49.07 by 1434 GMT.

LOWER COSTS

A reduction in the cost of oil projects since the price crash is helping non-OPEC supply to compete in the market.

"The OPEC secretariat is indeed re-evaluating non-OPEC supply's ability to withstand prices," said Samuel Ciszuk, senior adviser on security of supply to the Swedish Energy Agency.

"Project costs have come down a lot and are continuing to fall, according to recent data. This is particularly so with regards to the U.S. light, tight oil - which has provided most of non-OPEC output growth, or in OPEC's view the oversupply."

OPEC also said its members continue to boost supplies. According to secondary sources cited by the report, OPEC produced 31.51 million bpd in July - 1.5 million bpd more than its 30-million-bpd target.

With OPEC forecasting demand for its crude will average 29.23 million bpd in 2015 - steady from last month - the report points to a 2.28-million-bpd supply surplus in the market if the group kept pumping at July's rate.

But Saudi Arabia, the driving force behind's OPEC's refusal to cut output, told OPEC it trimmed production by 200,000 bpd to 10.36 million bpd in July, down from June's record rate.

Some OPEC members such as Algeria are concerned by the drop in prices and want the group to reduce supply. Gulf members, however, have rebuffed calls for an emergency OPEC meeting and show no sign of willingness to consider output cuts.

In the report, OPEC still sees a sizeable slowdown in supply growth from non-OPEC next year and stuck to its view that rising global demand would erode the surplus in the market.

"Crude oil demand in the coming months should continue to improve and, thus, gradually reduce the imbalance in oil supply-demand fundamentals," it said.  — Reuters

Nishikori beats Isner in D.C. for 10th career ATP title

Kei Nishikori broke the serve of American John Isner once in the second set and again in the third set and that was enough for the rising Japanese player to claim the Citi Open title in Washington, D.C. on Sunday (Monday, PHL time).

The second-seeded Nishikori beat the big-serving Isner 4-6 6-4 6-4 to celebrate his third title of the season and 10th of his career.

"It's been an amazing year so far," said the 25-year-old Nishikori, who will move up to fourth from fifth in the world rankings. "I've had some good Grand Slams, too."

Nishikori now looks forward to taking the next step at the U.S. Open, where he lost to Marin Cilic in the final last year.

"I defend the final in the U.S. Open, so I will try to keep it going," he said about his ranking points. "I'm playing well and I'm looking forward to keeping it going at the U.S. Open."

After Isner broke his serve in the final game of the first set to claim the opening set, Nishikori wasted no time getting back on track.

The Japanese broke Isner in the first game of the second set, and again early in the final set and outsteadied him on the hardcourt to sweep to victory.

"It's never easy against big servers," said Nishikori, who lost to Isner in the quarter-finals in Miami earlier this year.

"John, he's not just a big server, but he can come in and he has great forehands. It was a close game, but I'm happy to avenge."

Isner, coming off a tournament win last week in Atlanta and playing his 10th match in 12 days, fired 18 aces to Nishikori's five, but the cool, calm Japanese was sharp with 23 winners and only 13 unforced errors in nearly two hours of tennis.

It was another D.C. disappointment for 30-year-old Isner, who lost in the Citi Open final for the third time in six years. - Reuters

First Greek bank bailout cash could come before stress test – euro zone source

Greek banks could get a first capital injection soon after a bailout deal is agreed, as much as 10 billion euros, even before the European Central Bank completes a stress test, a euro zone official familiar with the issue said on Monday.

The official, who asked not to be named, said a bank test may not be finished before October but that it was recognized the Greek banks need urgent capital to normalize their operations.

So an initial sum may be allocated even before the ECB can assess the total of how much is actually needed.

The comments suggest that European officials are warming to Greek plans to get cash to banks as soon as possible and at the very latest before the end of the year.

Athens wants to ease capital controls, in place since June, which now limit withdrawals to 420 euros per customer per week.

It also wants to avoid having the recapitalization slip into 2016, at which time new EU regulations would require charges, or haircut, on large depositors, including companies.

The EU has suggested Greek banks may need anything from €10 billion to €25 billion, but the final amount is dependent on stress tests and an asset quality review. These tests will be accelerated, the source said.

Athens and international lenders are making unexpectedly quick progress in talks over an up to 86 billion euro bailout package, aiming to wrap up the deal this month and use the fresh money to repay a bond due to the ECB on Aug 20.

Another source said that the initial instalment must be sufficiently large to shore up confidence and a figure around 10 billion is seen making a psychological impact.

Greece's bank rescue fund injected €25 billion into the four main banks—National Bank, Piraeus, Eurobank and Alpha—in 2013 in exchange for shares, and last year they raised a further €8 billion from international investors. — Reuters

Furyk in good position to end Firestone title drought

PGA Tour veteran Jim Furyk has twice come agonizingly close to victory at Firestone and on Friday (Saturday, PHL time) he put himself in a good position to finally cross the finish line here in top spot.

The 45-year-old American fired a four-under-par 66 for a second day in a row at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to establish a commanding four-stroke halfway lead.

Although he still has 36 holes left at the World Golf Championships (WGC) event, Furyk has an extra bounce in his step after ending a five-year title drought on the PGA Tour in April.

"It's nice to get some confidence," Furyk told reporters as he reflected on his playoff victory four months ago at the RBC Heritage. He had finished runner-up seven times since his previous win at the 2010 Tour Championship.

"It had been so long since I'd won. Had I not won at Hilton Head, we'd be talking about how many leads I took into Sunday and didn't work out and how long it's been since I've won and why haven't I? It helps any time you get over the hump and go ahead and win.

"Hopefully I'll play well tomorrow and get myself in position for Sunday. If I do, I'll look back on that round and what I did right and try to do those things again."

Furyk, a 17-times champion on the PGA Tour, has squandered two previous opportunities to win on the heavily tree-lined layout at Firestone.

In 2001, he lost a marathon playoff on the seventh extra hole to Tiger Woods. In 2012, he double-bogeyed the final hole to be edged out by fellow American Keegan Bradley after leading the tournament from the opening round.

"I've lost some tournaments in some pretty poor fashions, but I don't think I've let one ever slip nearly as bad as this one," Furyk said after his late collapse in 2012. "This was my worst effort to finish off an event."

Three years on, he still feels the sting of disappointment.

"I'm disappointed I've never won here," he said. "It's one of my favorite courses we play. Before I'd won at Hilton Head (for the first time) in 2010, that was another course where I'd always wanted to win.

"So I'm disappointed (never to have won at Firestone), but to have like a chip on my shoulder. No. I don't look at it like that. It's another year and opportunity, and we're only halfway." - Reuters

After qualifying for the final in seventh during a punishing schedule which meant Ledecky raced her semi-final 30 minutes after winning the 1,500m freestyle gold with a world record, the 18-year-old American touched first in one minute 55.16 seconds.

Ledecky's win, achieved from lane seven, added to her golds in the 400m freestyle on the opening night and the 1,500.

Morozov led throughout to record 48.12 seconds but was adjudged to have left the blocks too soon, a decision which silenced the near-capacity Kazan Arena.  — Reuters

Women and African Americans lose more years of life after heart attack

Heart attacks seem to have a bigger effect on life expectancy for women and African Americans than for white men, a new study shows.

Women and men live equally long after heart attack—but because women in general tend to live longer than men, the women should be living longer after a heart attack, too, according to lead author Dr. Emily M. Bucholz of the Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut.

Much of the differences between blacks and whites in the study could be due to differences in the way the disease first appears, and the treatments used, “but for women that was not the case,” Bucholz said.

“The thing that’s completely different from prior studies is (those studies) have not factored in what is the mean life expectancy for women in the general population,” Bucholz told Reuters Health by phone.

Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack, and 15 percent die from it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For the new study, researchers used data on more than 140,000 Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized for a heart attack between 1994 and 1995. Almost half were women. Less than 10 percent were black. The average age was 76.

White men and women hospitalized for heart attack at age 70 lived an average of about nine years afterward, compared to about seven years for black men and women hospitalized at the same age, the authors reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Men lost about 3.5 years of potential life, whereas women lost 5.5 years. Whites lost an average of 4.5 years of life, and blacks lost about 5.5 years.

Black patients tended to have more severe heart attacks and more heart failure afterward. They also had more diabetes to start with, indicating that they were a sicker population than the white patients, Bucholz said.

Not only did blacks have more cardiac risk factors at the time of the heart attack, but they “also were less likely to get acute treatments,” like clot-busting drugs or cardiac procedures like angioplasty, said Dr. Jack V. Tu of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto.

Whether this is because black patients visit hospitals that provide poorer care, or they get a lower standard of care in hospitals that also treat white patients, is still unclear, Bucholz said.

This explains some of the racial disparity, she said.

Both women and blacks are less likely to receive certain types of cardiac care, but these gaps may be narrowing over time, Tu told Reuters Health by email. He wrote an editorial comment published with the new results.

“It’s not that every patient loses three years of life or one year of life, some live for 30 days, some live for years and years,” since heart attack severity is on a continuum, Bucholz said.

There is not much individuals can do to address these gender and race disparities, but overall national policy can address them, Bucholz said.

“This study reiterates that these disparities still exist, and we can do better,” she said. —Reuters

Nestle India targets growth in other businesses after Maggi scare

NEW DELHI – Nestle India Ltd. will focus on growing its dairy, coffee and confectionary businesses, its new boss said, as the company battles to bring back its popular Maggi noodles that were pulled from shelves over safety concerns.

The unit of Swiss food giant Nestle is at the center of India's worst food scare in a decade after a regulator found its Maggi noodles contained dangerous levels of lead. Nestle India has maintained that Maggi is safe, and is challenging the regulator in court.

Suresh Narayanan, who was named managing director of Nestle India last week, said his priority would be to expand other business segments to reduce the company's reliance on Maggi.

"It's a fact that Maggi is a big part, I am not diluting that fact," Narayanan told journalists over the weekend.

"But what for me is going to be key is to grow other categories as well: dairy, coffee, confectionery."

The Maggi scare has affected the company's other businesses too, he said.

Narayanan said he was hopeful that Maggi would come back but he would not "hazard a guess" on the timing. Maggi noodles have been recalled across India and production has been halted.

The appointment of Narayanan, an Indian national who most recently headed Nestle's operations in the Philippines, was seen as part of a damage-control exercise as Nestle had been criticized for its slow response to a reputation crisis.

Etienne Benet, Nestle India's former managing director, has moved to head office in Switzerland.

"My being an Indian, as my boss says, is icing on the cake. Being an Indian makes me familiar," said Narayanan, adding he was not in a "confrontational" situation with authorities.

"My fervent hope is that we are able to find a solution." – Reuters
