New MacBook Air, Mac Mini uses 100% recycled aluminum

The newest MacBook Air and Mac Mini may include a set of new features, but their enclosures are all second-hand and come from 100 percent recycled aluminum.

Apple aimed to further lower the company’s carbon footprint by using an in-house designed, recycled aluminum alloy to wrap its latest computing products. The move is a first for the company, according to a statement.

Apart from recycled enclosures, the Mac Mini will also use recycled plastics for most of its plastic parts.

All in all, the Cupertino, California-based company estimated that the recycled parts brought down each device’s carbon footprint to nearly 50 percent from their last iteration.

The new MacBook Air and Mac Mini were launched at Apple’s New York event on Oct. 30. A new iPad Pro with thinner bezels and Face ID were also introduced at the event.  /ra

‘iPhone X’ may carry powerful six-core A11 processor

More information about the upcoming “iPhone X” have been posted online from the leaked iOS 11 Golden Master (GM) build which suggests a powerful six-core A11 processor.

Twitter user Longhorn (@never_revealed) shared the composition of the upcoming iPhone’s A11 processor, which consists of four high-powered Monsoon cores and two low-powered Mistrals.

Longhorn earlier reported that Mistral was the high-powered core, but later retracted to clarify that it was the other way around.

Another Twitter user going by Steve T-S (@stroughtonsmith) corroborated Longhorn’s information.

Such an arrangement suggests that the upcoming iPhones will have a more efficient way of handling apps. Apps and tasks that work in the background or require little processing power, like music playback and email, could be handled by the two low-power Mistral cores to conserve battery.

More processor heavy apps like games could then be forwarded to the four high-powered Monsoon cores to ensure smooth performance.

Apart from processing capabilities, other details about the iPhone X were mined from the iOS 11 GM. These include memory size and camera sensor types. Steve T-S also posted that the new iPhone will come with an IR camera.

Apple Store displays Apple Watch 2, iPhone 7 event teaser

Apple certainly enjoys indulging in a few theatrics when introducing new products. In preparation for the unveiling of the iPhone 7, Apple has temporarily ceased its online store operation, displaying the message to “check back soon” in several languages.

At 10 a.m. PST, Apple’s media event will kick off to finally introduce the much-awaited iPhone 7 and a second-generation Apple Watch, reports 9to5Mac.

There was a rather extensive prediction made recently about the iPhone 7’s features and specifications, so it is understandable that many will be anxious to see whether these predictions will be right on the money.

More information will be made available once the event has run its course.  Alfred Bayle

Apple analyst predicts more iPhone 7 details

With Apple’s long awaited event just days away, Apple analyst Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicted a few more details that may or may not be unveiled on Wednesday when Apple officially launches its iPhone 7.

In a report on Kuo’s predictions, The Verge cites features that may seem to be not so overly innovative individually but would come together to form a solid product from Apple.

To start with, Kuo predicts that the internal components will consist of a base storage capacity of 32GB with 128GB and 256GB variants, 3GB of RAM, and a new A10 processor clocked at 2.45GHz. It will also have a wide color gamut similar to the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

Moving to the “outer” parts, Apple may now offer five color options for users to choose from, including rose gold, gold, silver, “dark black” and “piano black.” The long rumored absence of a 3.5mm headphone jack will also be confirmed at the event.

As for taking pictures, the iPhone 7 is predicted to feature a dual-lens camera system that features telephoto and wide-angle cameras with both having 12-megapixel sensors. Its flash will be equipped with four LEDs, two warm, and two cool.

Other features that Kuo has predicted included in the iPhone 7 is an earpiece that also doubles as a speaker for better sound reproduction when parking the iPhone on landscape, IPX7 water resistance, a laser-based proximity sensor and, finally, FeliCa NFC technology for the Japanese market.

In all, the new features don’t sound too extravagant on their own and actually seem like “logical” step-ups for a new device. How Apple integrated all these features to work together will be the deciding factor as to whether the new iPhone 7 will be able to carry Apple to the expected game-changing device that it is currently working on for a 2017 unveiling.  Alfred Bayle

iPad Pro is bigger, with keyboard and stylus

SAN FRANCISCO -  Apple Inc announced a bigger iPad with a new keyboard and stylus aimed at business customers.

Chief Executive Tim Cook promised a day of "monster" news on Wednesday, but shares of the company remained nearly flat as executives showed off the iPad, which will be priced starting at $799.

Cook began by talking up the Apple Watch, saying customer satisfaction for the new product was 97 percent. Apple is working with French luxury goods maker Hermes on a new watch collection, and Facebook Messenger is coming to the device, he added.

He then rolled out the "iPad Pro" with a 12.9 inch screen and said it had performance similar to a desktop computer. Apple showed off a "smart" keyboard and a stylus called "Pencil".

Apple said it had partnered with Cisco Systems Inc and IBM to help power the iPad pro, which it said is up to 1.8 times faster and has a 10-hour battery life. Many people on Twitter seemed unimpressed by the new iPad and lamented its large size, however.

Shares of Apple were up less than 1 percent at $112.68.

Cook promised "monster announcements" at the event, which is also expected to feature an updated version of its Apple TV device and of its iPhones, which drove nearly two-thirds of the company's $49.6 billion in revenue in the most recent quarter.

Apple is widely expected to keep the size of the phones the same but upgrade it with an improved camera and Force Touch, a display technology that responds differently depending on how hard users press their screens.

A year after Apple rolled out iPhones with larger screens, touching off a frenzy of sales that saw revenue in the most recent quarter increase 32.5 percent from the same quarter a year ago, the latest upgrades may leave some investors and consumers underwhelmed.

"It's getting harder and harder for Apple to compete against itself," said analyst Bob O'Donnell of TECHnalysis Research. Apple shares are up more than 14 percent over the last year, although they are down nearly 12 percent in the last three months.

Fortunately for Apple, most consumers buy smartphones under a two-year upgrade cycle, meaning the company will still likely scoop up a lot of sales, said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.

"The key point of reference is not how the new phone compares to the iPhone 6, it's how it compares to the iPhone 5s," he said.

Expectations have been rising for an revamped Apple TV, a set-top box that has seen few significant updates since its release in 2007. Although Apple has yet to hammer out deals for a long-awaited television service, analysts say the company is poised to overhaul the hockey-puck-sized device.

The device is expected to gain an App Store and an interface that allows users to make requests through the Siri digital assistant and search for specific programs and movies across apps. The company may also discuss the device's role as a hub for gaming.

"It's a big day for the big screen!" Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue tweeted before the event.

Nearly 20 percent of U.S. broadband households own at least one streaming media player, and Apple has a long way to go in the market, according to data from research firm Parks Associates.

Roku is the leader in streaming media boxes, accounting for 34 percent of all streaming devices sold in the United States in 2014, according to data from research firm Parks Associates. Google Inc's Chromecast and Amazon.com Inc's Fire TV were next. The Apple TV box came in fourth.

"It's important that (Apple) come out and really get up to date and potentially eclipse some of the other living room devices out there," Moorhead said.  — Reuters

Apple mulls original online television shows -report

Apple is dabbling with the idea of making online television programming in a move that would challenge established players such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, according to show-business magazine Variety.

Variety cited unnamed sources as saying that the California-based company has chatted in recent weeks with Hollywood executives to assess interest in leading an effort to make original content for Apple.

Apple told AFP that it would not comment on what it referred to as "rumor and speculation."

Industry trackers have wondered what the vision is for Apple TV set-stop boxes, which the company downplayed as a "hobby" after the original version was released in 2007.

Online streaming of films and television shows has since become a mainstay of home entertainment, setting up the potential for Apple to combine iTunes digital offerings with its hardware for delivering content to the biggest screens in living rooms.

Apple TV news is expected to be part of a September 9 media event the company will host in San Francisco.

In trademark enigmatic style, the emailed invitations to the event provided little more than the time and place of the event. Beneath graphics based on the Apple logo was written "Hey Siri, give us a hint."

The timing of the Apple event did not come as a surprise since the company is known to host September events to announce iPhone updates.

Apple sets Sept 9 event; new iPhones might be unveiled

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on Thursday invited journalists to a Sept. 9 event, where it is expected to unveil new iPhones and potentially a new version of its Apple TV set-top box.

The email invitation includes a colorful Apple logo with the sentence "Hey Siri, give us a hint," referring to Apple's popular digital voice assistant.

The company traditionally announces its new iPhones in September.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6 Plus S. Typically, the company launches upgraded versions to existing phones under the "S" range.

Media reports have indicated that Apple is preparing for the largest initial production run for its next iPhones by the end of the year.

The new iPhones are also said to feature Force Touch technology, which can distinguish between a light tap and deep press.

Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross said she was also expecting a faster processor on iPhones.

"We assume that they may come out with a new iPad at the event as well," Cross added.

When users posed the question in the invitation to Siri on their iPhones, Siri threw back responses such as "You're cute when you're desperate for information" and "You'll have to wait until Sept. 9. I bet you were one of those kids who snuck downstairs to open presents early, weren't you?"

The event will be held at 10:00 a.m. PT in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, which can hold about 7,000 people.

Apple did not immediately respond to requests for more details on the event.  — Reuters
