BTS sweeps top prizes at 2019 MAMA in Nagoya

SEOUL — K-pop sensation BTS picked up nine prizes at this year’s Mnet Asian Music Awards in the Japanese city of Nagoya on Wednesday, monopolizing the biggest Asian music awards event.

The septet took home the top three prizes at the 2019 MAMA — Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year — winning big at the awards ceremony held at Nagoya Dome.

Six other awards including Best Male Group, Best Dance Performance-Male Group and Best Music Video also went to BTS.

“Year 2019 has been a year of really intense and hard work. Looking back, we had (a time) when we almost gave up, but after some time we can now smile over the past,” member Suga said, lifting the Artist of the Year trophy.

“Over the past year, we have grown more and become stronger,” he said.

Member J-Hope said in a separate speech after taking the Album of the Year prize that BTS “will try to provide a positive influence and good messages.”

Member Jimin hinted at the band’s next album, saying, “We are preparing our next album and we might be able to come up with an album that is far better than what you are expecting.”

Separately, veteran singer Lee So-ra’s 2019 song featuring Suga, “Song Request,” was named Best Collaboration during the three-hour awards and performance ceremony.

Girl band TWICE took home Best Dance Performance-Female Group and Best Female Group, while female quartet Mamamoo won Favorite Vocal Performance.

ITZY and Tomorrow X Together lifted Best New Female Artist and Best New Male Artist, respectively.

The 2019 MAMA was well received by fans in Japan despite on-going diplomatic and trade disputes between Seoul and Tokyo stemming from their shared history.

MAMA organizer CJ’s choice of Nagoya had raised eyebrows among South Korean fans after the city temporarily suspended the exhibition of a symbolic Korean sculpture during the city’s hosting of the Aichi Triennale art festival in the wake of the bilateral rows earlier this year. Yonhap

Ariana begs for ‘one OK day’

In a recent series of tweets, Ariana Grande hinted that things weren’t going too well in her life at the moment. “Can I have one OK day? Just one. Please. I’m so tired. Please,” she wrote.

The 25-year-old pop star has reportedly been experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, which was caused by last year’s terror attack at her Manchester concert. She’s also coping with the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.

Ariana said that “it has been a tough month,” and apologized for getting everyone worried.

“I’m trying to get my work done and get back to normal,” she wrote. “And it’s hard and I’m only human.”

It has also been confirmed that the singer wouldn’t be touring anytime soon, so she could take a break. —ALLAN POLICARPIO

Gigi Hadid, Zayn Malik giving ‘second chance’ to relationship

Since their breakup in March, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik haven’t been apart long from each other, leading many to speculate that a reconciliation was inevitable.

The two dated for two years before announcing their split. However, in April they were seen locking lips in New York as per TMZ.

According to E! News, Hadid and Malik have been bonding in the singer’s farm in Pennsylvania, which is beside that of  the model’s mother.

“Gigi and Zayn are in a much better place since splitting,” said the E! News source. “They needed the space apart for a bit and are now giving things a second chance.”

As for news that they are official, it seems that it’s still in the works. An E! News source said in a May report that the “Pillowtalk” singer was eager to get back together, but that Hadid was “hesitant.”

In a June 18 GQ feature, Malik said, “We’re adults. We don’t need to put a label on it, make it something for people’s expectations.”

They supposedly broke up due to their hectic careers, with Hadid an in-demand model and Malik working as a solo artist. But as Hadid said in their breakup statement, “As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be.”  NiƱa V. Guno /ra

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson engaged after 24 days together is the epitome of whirlwind romance

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson very recently became Instagram-official following rumors that they’re dating. Just a couple of weeks after that, there are reports that they’re already engaged. ENGAGED!

A source told People“It’s a recent engagement. They’re just two people who found love quickly and make each other happy all the time. They both started talking about it this past weekend. It’s nothing they’ve been hiding.” Although the couple hasn’t confirmed anything just yet, Ariana posted then deleted an emoji-filled tweet as soon as the news went public.

But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen just how fast their relationship is going. They reportedly became a couple shortly after they broke up with their exes Mac Miller and Cazzie David. In the 24 days they’ve been together (it’s only been this long?!), Ariana and Pete have gotten matching tattoos. Both have small cloud tattoos on their fingers, and Pete got the Dangerous Woman bunny ears inked behind his ear and the initials “AG” on his thumb.

Fans have noted that it’s looking like a whirlwind romance because of the tattoos. And now they’re engaged. Hold on, I need a breather.

Anyway, congratulations, Ariana and Pete! Here’s hoping you guys talk about Harry Potter for a long, long time.

Hollywood stars declare war on sexual misconduct at Globes

Hollywood spoke with one voice at the Golden Globes on Sunday to declare war on the film industry’s culture of sexual harassment and abuse.

The industry’s elite turned the red carpet black for the Globes, the glitzy launch of Tinseltown’s awards season, in a fashionable repudiation of disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein and others ensnared in allegations of misconduct.

Billed as the most raucous event in the showbiz calendar, the champagne-drenched Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual prize-giving is a draw for filmmakers and actors looking to create some buzz ahead of the Oscars in March.

But this year’s ceremony, seen as the first big opportunity for the industry to unite and deliver a message about how Hollywood can move forward, struck a more serious tone.

“Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have,” actress and media powerhouse Oprah Winfrey told the audience at the Beverly Hilton as she accepted a lifetime achievement award.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up,” she added, earning a standing ovation.

Actors and actresses turned out in black in solidarity with victims of Weinstein and numerous other figures exposed by the harassment and abuse scandal, including Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner and Dustin Hoffman.

And the overall message was a call for continued change.

“People are aware now of a power imbalance. It’s led to abuse in our industry. (…) It’s everywhere,” Meryl Streep, who is vying for a Globe for her work in media drama “The Post,” told E! network on the red carpet.

Fellow Oscar winner Viola Davis added: “It’s all of these women just embracing their authentic voices and standing in solidarity with each other.”

Seth Meyers, making his debut as Globes host, opened the show with joke after joke about Hollywood’s post-Weinstein reckoning.

“It’s 2018, marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn’t. It’s going to be a good year,” the late night NBC funnyman said.

“For the male nominees in the room tonight, this is the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out loud.”

‘Shape of Water’ vs ‘The Post’

The ceremony at the Beverly Hilton is not as reliable at predicting Oscars glory as the galas held by Hollywood’s acting, producing and directing unions.

But it remains one of the most high-profile and glamorous events of the awards calendar and tends to generate more headlines for tipsy tributes and wacky one-liners.

Leading the pack this year is Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy romance “The Shape of Water” with seven nominations, while “The Post” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” went into the night tied for second, with six each.

Overall, 25 awards are given out — 14 for movies and 11 for TV — and, as usual, the 90-member HFPA has sprung more than a few surprises in the nominations, placing horror satire “Get Out” in the best comedy-musical category.

But there were no nominations at all for female filmmakers despite huge successes in 2017 for Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”), Dee Rees (“Mudbound”), Kathryn Bigelow (“Detroit”) and Sofia Coppola (“The Beguiled”).

The first film award of the evening went to Sam Rockwell, who took home the best supporting actor in a film prize for crime drama “Three Billboards.”

He paid tribute to his “actor-friendly” director Martin McDonagh and co-star Frances McDormand, whom he described as “a force of nature.”

McDonagh also won for best screenplay. But Del Toro took the best director prize.

Big night for ‘Big Little Lies’

While many fields were wide open, James Franco (“The Disaster Artist”) was always a shoo-in to win best actor in a musical/comedy movie.

Franco — who also directed the film about Tommy Wiseau’s flop-turned-cult-hit “The Room” — gave a shoutout to his brother and co-star Dave, telling the gathered celebrities: “I love him more than anything. Thanks to my mother for giving him to me.”

On the small screen, HBO’s “Big Little Lies” scooped up a rare trio of acting awards for Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern.

“I hope we can elicit change through the stories we tell and the way we tell them,” said Kidman, who was named best actress in a limited series for her role as an abused wife in the show.

Dern urged Hollywood to support survivors of abuse and to promote restorative justice.

“May we teach our children that speaking out without the fear of retribution is our culture’s new north star,” she said.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” followed up its Emmys night glory, when it won four statuettes, by beating perennial awards juggernaut “Game of Thrones” to the Globe for best TV series.

Its star Elisabeth Moss also took home the prize for best actress in a drama, and thanked Margaret Atwood, who wrote the best-selling dystopian novel on which the Hulu series was based.

“Margaret Atwood, this is for you and the women who came before you and after you who were brave enough to speak out against intolerance and injustice and to fight for equality and freedom in this world,” Moss said.

Football, showbiz stars set for Messi’s wedding

Football and showbiz stars gather in northern Argentina on Friday for Latin America’s celebrity wedding bash of the decade when Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi marries his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo.

Pop star Shakira and her husband, Messi’s teammate Gerard Pique, are expected among the 260 guests, according to media and locals close to the event.

They will join old friends of the couple and footballers such as his Barcelona strike partners Luis Suarez and Neymar.

The party at a casino in his hometown Rosario will be a respite for the player from his legal woes. A Spanish court last month rejected his appeal against a conviction for tax fraud.

All-star guest list

Brunette bride Roccuzzo, 29, will wear a dress by Spanish designer Rosa Clara, which has been flown over from Barcelona.

The designer has dressed stars such as actresses Eva Longoria and Sofia Vergara as well as Spain’s Queen Letizia.

From 2200 GMT the guests will pack into the Hotel City-Center Casino, which stands right next to a crime-ridden slum run by drug gangs.

“Messi’s wedding accentuates the sense of inequality that is symbolized by the casino in that neighborhood,” said Carlos del Frade, author of several books on the drug trade in Rosario.

This city of 1.2 million people is also a cradle of footballing talent, however.

“Rosario lives and breathes football. That is another reason Lionel feels so comfortable here,” the city’s mayor, Monica Fein, told AFP.

“I think he is excited that through his wedding his friends (from abroad) will be able to get to know the city he loves so much.”

Local delicacies

The civil wedding ceremony and party will all take place inside the venue, and the guests will be lodged there too.

Messi, 30 — considered a man of few words — has reportedly asked chefs to cook local delicacies such as “locro” stew and “empanada” pasties for the feast.

The star dish is a typical Argentine beef roast including chitterlings, gizzards and kidneys.

Uruguayan pop bands Rombai and Marama plus singer Karina, wife of Argentina footballer Sergio Aguero, will perform at the dance.

It is not known whether the guests will also get a song from Shakira, the Colombian diva famous for “Whenever, Wherever.”

Tight security and media scrum

Some 155 journalists have been accredited to cover the bash, but have been warned they will have no access to the guests.

Security will be handled by a private team of Israeli specialists used by Messi for all his excursions.

“In Lionel Messi’s case, he’s widely accepted by the people at all levels,” said Diego Manso, a local private security consultant.

“All the same, the security systems will never overlook the probability of a lot of people wanting to approach him, wanting to touch him, take photos with him, from their risk analysis.”

Messi and Roccuzzo live in Barcelona where he plays, but still return regularly to Rosario on holiday.

The couple had their two children baptized there last year: Thiago, 4 and one-year-old Mateo, both born in Barcelona.

“It’s no surprise that he is coming back here to get married,” one of the wedding guests, the player’s old school friend Diego Vallejos, told AFP.

“He is an ordinary person who just wants to be near his family and friends. He is a humble person. Money has not changed his personality.”

Messi and Roccuzzo met as children. He moved to Spain when he was 13 to join FC Barcelona. But they kept in touch.

“They are the love of each other’s lives,” says Vallejos.

Taylor Swift now dating British star Joe Alwyn—report

Amid reports of several breakups of Hollywood couples, Taylor Swift has found new love in a dashing British actor.

According to The Sun, the pop star and  26-year-old Joe Alwyn have been lovey-dovey for the past several months. To bypass unruly paparazzi spies, Swift, who has rented a place near her beau’s home in London, wears hats and wigs while walking with him.

“Taylor and Joe are the real deal, this is a very serious relationship,” one insider told the news site. “But after what happened with Tom Hiddleston (Swift’s ex-boyfriend), they were determined to keep it quiet.”

Aside from maintaining her romance with Alwyn under wraps, Swift flies on private jets whenever she travels, a lesson she learned with Tom Hiddleston last year. “Taylor has flown in via private jets and her security has made it a military-like mission to prevent her from being seen,” the source divulged.

Although not as famous as his new flame, Alwyn appeared in “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and is in the forthcoming movie “The Favorite” alongside Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

Despite mounting international stardom for her chart-topping songs, Swift, 27, has dated several men and broke up with them. Aside from Hiddleston, Swift shared a “love story” with Calvin Harris, Harry Styles, Joe Jonas and Conor Kennedy.

For the meantime, Swifties (Swift’s fans) could only hope that her new affair will not lead to another breakup song soon.  Gianna Francesca Catolico /ra

Singer Ricky Martin to wed Syrian-born artist Jwan Yosef

Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin announced this week that he plans to wed his partner of one year, Syrian-born artist Jwan Yosef, whom he met after getting interested in his art.

Martin, one of the biggest stars of the Latin music world, made the announcement on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

The 44-year-old singer, who is an art collector, said he had contacted the painter after seeing some of his conceptual work.

“I saw his art and I went crazy, cause I really love what he does, really original, and so I contacted him,” Martin said on the show.

He said the couple had known each other for a little more than a year and were now living together.

“We just got engaged,” he gushed, showing off his engagement ring.

Martin said his husband-to-be gets along really well with his eight-year-old twins, who were born to a surrogate mother.

In an interview with Vogue Arabia published in November, Yosef said he was born in the small Syrian town of Ras Al-Ayn but had lived most of his life in Sweden and Britain.

Clinton’s showbiz pals spend big as Hollywood shuns Trump

LOS ANGELES—Glance at the list of Hillary Clinton’s biggest donors and you could be forgiven for thinking she was funding a Hollywood movie rather than a presidential campaign.

It is hardly surprising that the left-leaning entertainment industry is supporting a Democrat for the White House, but the gulf between candidates in donations from Tinseltown this election cycle is staggering.

Actors, studio executives and other employees of the film, TV and music industries have donated $20.7 million to Clinton’s run for the presidency, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign funding.

Her Republican rival Donald Trump has meanwhile raised less than $350,000 from Hollywood.

“The Clintons have always been Hollywood darlings, going back to Bill’s term in office,” said Usman Shaikh, a Los Angeles-based entertainment attorney and a contemporary of Trump’s daughter Ivanka at the University of Pennsylvania.

“If you recall when it was Clinton and Obama for the primaries in 2008, Hollywood was supporting Clinton.”

Within hours of the former first lady confirming last year she was running to become America’s first female commander-in-chief, dozens of celebrities clamored to give their stamp of approval.

By the fall of 2015, according to the Los Angeles Times, she had taken about $5 million of the $5.5 million that Hollywood figures had donated to the 2016 campaign.

Film titans Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg gave $1 million each, while “Star Wars” director J.J. Abrams stumped up $500,000.

Clinton supporter George Clooney hosted back-to-back dinners in San Francisco and Los Angeles in April which reportedly raised over $15 million, with donors paying as much as $350,000 a head.

Clinton attended 17 starry fundraisers in California over the summer, part of an eye-watering schedule that included nine events spread across the state over just three days in late August.

Onslaught of negativity

That string of fundraisers included an August 22 cocktail reception for 500 people — including actor Samuel L. Jackson — hosted by NBA legend Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie.

That was followed later the same day by a 90-minute event put on by billionaire media mogul Haim Saban and his wife Cheryl at their Beverly Hills home. One hundred guests paid at least $50,000 each.

The following day involved fundraisers in Piedmont and Laguna Beach, each requiring donations of $33,400 from attendees, and a 75-minute swing by the Hollywood Hills home of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.

Guests there — including Jennifer Aniston, Tobey Maguire, Shonda Rhimes, Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes — raised more than $3 million.

Trump, meanwhile, has faced an unprecedented onslaught of negativity from the entertainment industry — and not just the liberals.

Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement on Twitter at the start of October saying he would not be voting Republican for the first time since gaining US citizenship in 1983.

Meanwhile Harry Sloan, former head of MGM and a lifelong Republican, has announced he is backing Clinton and has even donated to her campaign.

According to Shaikh, there are an abundance of conservatives in Hollywood — but hardly any who will support the Republican candidate because of his divisive rhetoric on Mexicans, Muslims and women.

In fact, the driving force behind Trump’s fundraising activities is veteran Hollywood producer Steve Mnuchin, the man behind the “X-Men” franchise and “Avatar,” who has been finance chair of the campaign since May.

Political consultant Patrick Dorinson led a contingent of entertainment figures including Oscar-winner Jon Voight on a bus tour across the US in mid-September, giving speeches and news conferences on behalf of Trump.

‘Just too extreme’

But the litany of celebrities who have openly disparaged the real estate mogul and former reality TV star by far outweighs his supporters in Hollywood.

Some of America’s biggest stars, including actors Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, appeared in a video in September to take potshots at Trump while rallying voters to the polls on Election Day.

“Do we really want to give nuclear weapons to a man whose signature move is firing things?” asks Leslie Odom Jr., a Tony winner for his turn as Aaron Burr in the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton.”

“I just think culturally he’s a very different fit from Hollywood. On so many of his issues, he’s just too extreme, particularly on women’s issues,” said Steve Maviglio, a California-based political consultant.

“He’s been actually good on gay marriage and you’d think that would be a natural to attract people in Hollywood. But you’re not even seeing the Hollywood Republicans helping him out.

“Look at the Republican convention. He had hardly any entertainment, any Hollywood, there at all.  Where is Clint Eastwood, even?”

But while support of Hollywood is an important source of campaign fundraising, surveys have shown that the backing of celebrities holds little sway over the way Americans vote.

“We saw Susan Sarandon do a lot of work for Bernie Sanders this year,” said Maviglio, who served as Bill Clinton’s director of public affairs in the 1990s.

“She got a lot of attention because she was one of the first people out there. But did it have an impact at the end of the day? No.”

Police study DNA from Kim Kardashian robbery scene

PARIS, France — French investigators are studying several DNA samples found in the Paris apartment where Kim Kardashian was tied up and robbed at gunpoint of $10 million in jewels, sources close to the inquiry said Tuesday.

“These DNA samples are currently being analyzed,” one of the sources told AFP.

However, no DNA has been recovered from Kardashian’s diamond pendant that was found in the street by a passerby near her luxury residence just hours after the crime, the sources said.

The multi-millionaire US reality TV star, who was in the French capital for Paris fashion week, was robbed on October 3 by five men posing as police officers.

Kardashian was tied up and locked in the bathroom while the robbers helped themselves to a ring worth around four million euros ($4.5 million) and a case of jewelery with a value of five million euros ($5.6 million).

Two mobile phones were also stolen during the hold up in the chic Madeleine district of Paris, near the city’s main department stores.

The mother of two and wife of rap superstar Kanye West flew home to the US after being questioned by police over the incident, which a spokeswoman said had left her “badly shaken”.

Kardashian has been a fixture of US celebrity news for more than a decade, known mainly for the TV show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and a leaked sex tape. CBB

Justin Bieber Takes Down His Instagram After Feud with Selena Gomez

This happens after Justin and ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez had a war of words in the comments section. Justin told his fans to stop attacking his rumored new girlfriend Sofia Richie, and Selena told him to stop posting photos and getting mad at his fans.

“If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend. It should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone,” Selena writes.

Justin then accused Selena of using him for fame, to which she replied, “Funny how the ones that cheated multiple times are pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive, no wonder fans are mad. All love.”

And the rest is history―quite literally.

Although Selena later apologized for the incident on her Snapchat, it might take a while before we hear anything from Justin on social media―unless he decides to tweet something out of nowhere. (Yup, his Twitter’s still there, don’t worry.

After numerous reports exposing her shocking break-up with beau Taylor Kinney, Italian-American pop singer Lady Gaga released a statement on her Instagram account on Tuesday night to say that they are “taking a break”.

The 30-year-old “Bad Romance” singer released a statement on her Instagram account. “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. Former “One Direction” singer Zayn Malik and Victoria’s Secret supermodel Gigi Hadid parted ways after a seven-month relationship.

Sources divulged to entertainment news site E! News that the Hollywood “It” couple had had a “love-hate relationship” just before they broke up.

“During her birthday they were fighting,” an insider gossiped. Hadid, 21, and Malik, 23, had “broken up and got back together a few times.”

Another source leaked that although Hadid was “gloomy,” with their relationship getting on the rocks, there was still hope that the couple would reconcile.

“Zayn and Gigi did break up, but they can likely get back together tomorrow. It’s all very unclear what’s going on between them now. They have been having some issues lately that involved communication and getting along,” the source elucidated.

According to US Magazine, Hadid previously dated two admired singers, Joe Jonas and Cody Simpson. Malik was formerly engaged to Perrie Edwards.
