Kendrick Lamar, Cooper and Lady Gaga earn Golden Globe nods
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Golden Globe nominations recognized Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s talents as actors, but Thursday’s announcement also came with a nod for their soulful duet “Shallow” from “A Star is Born”.
They join an impressive roster of music stars who earned Globe nominations Thursday, including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Dolly Parton, Annie Lennox and Troye Sivan and Jonsi.
Cooper and Gaga were each nominated for best drama acting honors for their performances in “A Star is Born”, and Cooper also earned a directing nod.
“Shallow” co-writer Mark Ronson received his first Golden Globe nomination for his work on the song. He told The Associated Press he sent text messages to Cooper and Gaga telling them both, “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
“When you go into writing a song for a movie like this, you hope that it’s good enough to make it in the film. But to be nominated is amazing,” said Ronson, who learned about the nomination after taping a talk show with Miley Cyrus in London. “It’s just a really good song. The way (Gaga and Bradley) performed the song takes it to another level.”
Gaga said in a statement, “The film has truly been a passion project for everyone involved and we’ve all become a family.”
Lamar, a Grammy winner, and SZA became first-time Globe nominees for their song from the Marvel Studios blockbuster “Black Panther”. The superhero film also received a nomination for best original score along with “A Quiet Place”, ”Isle of Dogs”, First Man” and “Mary Poppins Returns”.
“It’s a nice surprise to be woken up. I thought it was another evacuation,” said “Quiet Place” composer Marco Beltrami, who had to evacuate from his studio for a week during a massive Southern California wildfire last month.
Dolly Parton and Linda Perry were nominated for “Girl in the Movies” from the upcoming film “Dumplin”, while Annie Lennox was recognized for “Requiem for a Private War” from “A Private War” and Troye Sivan and Jónsi for “Revelation” from “Boy Erased”.
“Black Panther” composer Ludwig Goransson said he was awakened by his wife who flashed her phone in his face with the news.
“I’m just really proud, but totally surprised,” said Goransson, who worked with Childish Gambino on “This Is America”. ”You never want to take anything for granted, especially in this business.”
It’s the sixth Globes nomination for Parton.
Troye Sivan and Jónsi said it was an incredible honor to create the song “Revelation” for the film “Boy Erased” in hopes of spreading the message of love.
The 76th annual Golden Globes will air live on January 6, 2019. CC

Rich or not, homeowners await word of California wildfire’s toll
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rich or not, famous or not, there was little reprieve Saturday from the California wildfires sweeping through towns as different as the star-filled oceanside enclave of Malibu and the modest communities nearby and in the state’s north.
Lady Gaga, Martin Sheen and Kim Kardashian West were among the celebrities who joined thousands of others in evacuating from the affluent coastal city that is as well-known as its residents. Stars went online to share their worries, with some able to follow up with good news Saturday.
Alyssa Milano, who on Friday tweeted that her house was “in jeopardy” but she had gotten needed help to evacuate her horses and that her children were safe, was among the lucky ones.
“My house is still standing. I’m on my way to bring firefighters water and food,” she tweeted. She previously said her heart was with others facing “this awful disaster.”
Others were left to wait.
“I am thinking so deeply for everyone who is suffering today from these abominable fires & grieving the loss of their homes or loved ones,” Lady Gaga tweeted. “I’m sitting here with many of you wondering if my home will burst into flames. All we can do is pray together & for each other. God Bless You.”
There were shout-outs as well to the firefighters struggling to contain the fires in what were described as especially difficult conditions.
“These guys are heroes,” filmmaker Guillermo del Toro posted on Twitter. His so-called “Bleak House,” which contains his collection of items too scary to be kept in the family home, was endangered.
Shannen Doherty, who’d been out of town when the fire broke out, said online that friends staying at her Malibu house evacuated safely with her dogs. She expressed gratitude to firefighters “putting their lives on the line for all of us” and sympathy for others affected by the fire.
Sheen (“The West Wing,” ”Apocalypse Now”), interviewed by a TV station on the beach Friday night after fleeing his home, said the fire was the worst he has ever seen. He said he expects his house was destroyed.
The interview occurred after his son, actor Charlie Sheen, tweeted that he’d been unable to contact his father, and the Los Angeles Fox affiliate KTTV tracked him down. Martin Sheen gave a shoutout to his family to let them know he and his wife, Janet, were safe and planned to sleep in their car by the beach.
The status of Martin Sheen’s home was unknown Saturday.
“Beverly Hills, 90210” star Doherty said her “heart is ripped apart” by the loss of a Malibu home where she and husband Kurt Iswarienko were married in 2011, posting on Instagram a wedding-day photo of the smiling couple on a tree-lined path at the property apparently owned by a friend.
She had previously found refuge in the house when her father died in 2010, Doherty wrote.
“It’s the place I felt my dad with me. It’s gone. Fire has taken it away. I’m devastated by all that’s happening,” she said.
The blaze started Thursday night and by Friday had pushed toward Malibu and the Pacific Ocean, prompting evacuations in Malibu, Calabasas, Agoura Hills and other nearby areas. Authorities said Saturday that two people were found dead in the fire zone and at least 150 homes burned.
Officials stressed late Saturday that high winds are expected to resume on Sunday and mandatory evacuations must remain in place.
In Northern California, the small inland town of Paradise was virtually wiped out by a fast-moving blaze that destroyed more than 6,700 buildings and claimed nine lives as of Saturday.
Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight on “The Office,” indicated online that he and his family were away when flames “roared down the creek bed behind our house and missed it by a dozen yards!”
“Thousands of others have lost homes and pets and precious belongings. Especially the residents of Paradise who have lost lives,” he tweeted.
Although the fatalities overshadowed any loss of property, Malibu’s fame inevitably called attention to the state of its multimillion-dollar homes, including one made famous in ABC’s reality dating series “The Bachelor.”
The show’s producers said in a statement Saturday that, with the area closed to traffic, they didn’t know the condition of what is primarily a private residence. They said their main concern “is with the family who has been displaced, their neighbors, and all the communities impacted by this tragic fire.”
Also left waiting was Caitlyn Jenner, whose hilltop home appeared intact when it was shot by a photographer for The Associated Press on Saturday morning. Jenner’s representative noted that the Olympic gold medalist wouldn’t know the extent of any damage to the home until she was allowed to return to it.
Even outside the evacuation zone, the impact of the fire was being felt by others in the entertainment industry.
“The world is literally on fire right now. And unfortunately it’s becoming more and more common here in California,” actress Natalie Portman said Friday night in Hollywood at an American Film Institute Fest premiere of her film “Vox Lux.”
She said she was hoping for the best for friends and everyone else affected by the blaze. She said she’d spoken to her own two children about the fires because “they need to feel safe” and also understand that there are broad regional effects, like poor air quality.
Paramount Pictures canceled Sunday’s premiere of the film “Instant Family” in Los Angeles due to the wildfire. The studio said it would donate food ordered for the after party to the American Red Cross, and would screen the film at an evacuation center.
Kardashian West posted a video on Instagram of an area on fire with a message “Pray for Calabasas.” She said she landed back home, spent one hour packing and evacuated shortly afterward.
In addition to homes destroyed, Paramount Ranch’s “Western Town,” a landmark film location dating back to 1927 that included a jail, hotel and saloon, burned to the ground. The TV series “Westworld” is among the many productions that have filmed at the ranch in the mountains west of Los Angeles. NVG

Victoria’s Secret rocks Paris with $3M bra and Lady Gaga
PARIS — The laciest, if not raciest, catwalk event of the year — aka, the Victoria’s Secret fashion show — took place Wednesday night in in the City of Light. Among the takeaways: performances by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid joining forces, as well as a $3 million Fantasy bra modelled by Jasmine Tookes. Here are the highlights of the Paris show:
Angels in red
Guests shuffled into the huge steel-and-glass atrium of Paris’ Grand Palais to the sound of a string orchestra playing softly from a huge Arc de Triomphe decor.
The calm lasted only a few seconds, however, and was broken by the flash of red neon lights and bold rock music blasting out to announce the start of the 40-minute presentation, which infected the cheering guests.
Swedish model Elsa Hosk strutted out fittingly with electric energy in a cropped bustier — enveloped in a huge, three-dimensional red Chinese dragon; Kendall Jenner — in blood red — wore thigh-high boots, a long-line plunging bra and suede angel wing and Gigi Hadid looked like she would take off in flight, sporting a hand-painted cape with an Aztec-pattern that billowed as she walked.
The high-octane show was divided into six thematic sections, reflected in the colorful styles that bore inches of bare skin: Road Ahead, Mountain Romance, Pink Nation, Secret Angel, Dark Angel and Bright Night Angel.
The signature wings fluttered throughout — in feather, silk, gold gild, suede and Swarovski crystal.
“Not only do the wings get bigger but we tap into new artisans and people who do things with 3-D printing … that’s always the wonderful thing about working on the show,” said Victoria’s Secret Executive Producer Monica Mitro.
As the show ended, a million pieces of glittered ribbon fell on the angels and the adoring crowds.
Gaga, Mars, The Weeknd
With a retro bleached hairstyle, Lady Gaga gave a rousing and gutsy live performance of “Million Reasons” to the crowd, and appeared again for “A-YO.”
At one point her microphone got stuck in the tassels of her dark cowboy hat, but this didn’t stop the consummate professional, who continued singing “John Wayne” as Victoria’s Secret models danced with her and crisscrossed the runway rhythmically to the beat.
As the 30-year-old popstar ended her set, she walked over to kiss Hadid’s mother, reality TV star Yolanda Hadid, in her front row seat. (Before the show, Gaga treated her Instagram followers to a photo of herself in silver Victoria’s Secret underwear).
Bruno Mars also performed several times, ramping up the energy and using the catwalk as his stage — in signature shades, with tuxedo-wearing backing dancers jiving behind him.
The American singer had guests jumping up and down for funky performances of “24K Magic” and “Chunky.”
But it was perhaps The Weeknd that got the most cheers of the night. The singer serenaded Bella Hadid — with whom he has been romantically linked — with his hit song “Starboy,” and almost followed her up the catwalk as she walked in a lace gown with silk organza corset.
$3 Million Fantasy Bra
The Victoria’s Secret Fantasy bra the 25-year-old Jasmine Tookes was selected to wear is considered the piece de resistance of the brand’s runway display.
The bra, glimmering with thousands of gemstones, was presented like crown jewels ahead of the show. An incredible work of art, it was designed by Eddie Borgo and hand-crafted over 700 hours with gems from jeweler AWMouzannar.
“It is so beautiful. It’s covered in white diamonds and emeralds and it has about 9,000 gemstones. It cost $3 million — so stunning,” gushed Tookes backstage while she was having her hair done.
It’s the third time a black model has been chosen to model the Fantasy Bra.
Tookes said the garment was constructed on a mold of her upper body, literally made to measure.
While the bra may be perfect for the runway presentation, Tookes joked she probably wouldn’t want to go for a jog in it, given its weight.
“It’s very heavy; it weighs more than 450 karats. It weighs down on my shoulders a little bit, but it’s so worth it,” she said, cheekily adding: “I might jog out of this show with it though.”
A (Hadid) family affair
Hadid, 52, was the proudest of mothers Wednesday night.
For the first time, the former model could boast that Bella was included in the Victoria’s Secret model line-up as well as Gigi for 2016.
“Last year, Gigi got it and Bella didn’t get it and I felt awkward being there having Bella at home. And this year, it’s just so perfect because they’re both here. We’re celebrating, the sisters together,” she told The AP.
The three posed for cameras and kissed on the pink carpet following the collection — in a show of family love.
“It’s all surreal. I mean, I came here when I was 16, modeling. So many years have gone by and to be here with both my girls.it’s emotional. I keep looking at them and pinching myself. Whoever thought that this would happen?” she added.
The original angel
She was one of the original Victoria’s Secret models back in 1995.
Now at 51 years old — and just as youthful-looking — Veronica Webb spoke to the AP about the challenges and particularities of the famed fashion show that she began 21 years ago.
“I was in the first Victoria’s Secret show and it was one of the most challenging bookings that I ever did because, obviously, if you’re in a room and everyone else is dressed and you’re in your underwear it’s a little bit embarrassing,” she said, laughing.
Webb, who made history as the first African-American to ever have a cosmetics contract, also recalled how important the experience boosted her professional life.
“It was one of the proudest moments of my career also because it took so much discipline and making so many fitness goals to get there,” she said.
Even Victoria’s Secret models get nervous
Brazilian beauty Lais Ribeiro physically jumped when a loudspeaker bellowed there was just one hour until show time.
“Butterflies just came stronger in my stomach. I’m getting very, very excited,” Ribeiro, 26, told The Associated Press.
Ribeiro knows more than most about the hidden dangers in a show such as this, where models in towering heels can injure themselves. She hurt her foot as a Victoria’s Secret Angel three years ago.
“What am I scared of? I twisted my ankle and kind of broke my foot in the rehearsal three years ago. So I’m always scared of the high heels (that might make) me miss this amazing show,” she said.
Security tight
Hours before Wednesday’s show began, hundreds of meters in the area around Paris’ Grand Palais and the Champs Elysées avenue were in near lock-down, barricaded with passing tourists and fashionistas alike getting frisked.
Bomb squad dogs sniffed out every single bag that entered the Grand Palais where the fashion show took place.
Paris remains in a state of emergency following last November’s Paris attacks at a concert hall and various spots around the capital.
City of Angels
The Angels, as Victoria’s Secret top models are known, have taken Paris — and their Instagram accounts — by storm since flying into the City of Light on Sunday night.
Led by Alessandra Ambrosio, the troupe posed for photos outside the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday morning as gob-smacked tourists stopped to take in the incredible views, which included the monument.
Josephine Skriver, Adriana Lima, Lily Donaldson, Hosk, Lily Aldridge and Tookes wore assorted Angels T-shirts and skinny, figure-hugging black jeans.
But the fun continued online, with Lima posting a from-behind shot of her and Martha Hunt wearing thigh-high boots during the show’s preparations.
Mere mortals may use a face mask ahead of a glamorous night out — but these are Angels, and terrestrial rules don’t apply.
Trending online were photos of some of the models using 24-karat gold sheet masks to prepare for the 2016 show.

Lady Gaga putting on invite-only Democratic convention show
![]() |
But while thousands of delegates have been invited across the Delaware River for an afternoon concert with the pop star, press won’t be allowed to cover the event sponsored by the man considered New Jersey’s most powerful unelected political power broker.
George Norcross and the Senate Majority PAC are hosting the invite-only “Camden Rising” event Thursday afternoon with invites going out to all of the convention’s delegates, hours before Hillary Clinton accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination.
A spokesman for Norcross said performer contracts prohibited press from being able to cover the event, which also will include performances by Lenny Kravitz and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Norcross is credited with working with Republican Gov. Chris Christie to help in redevelopment efforts in Camden, many partially funded through state grants and tax credits. The insurance executive runs southern New Jersey’s Democratic Party organization and is a Democratic superdelegate along with his brother, US Rep. Donald Norcross. Both are supporting Clinton.
“It’s going to be, with the exception of the acceptance speech by Hillary Clinton, the hottest ticket at the convention based on the responses that we’ve gotten so far,” Norcross said last week. “I think having it in Camden and entitling it ‘Camden Rising’ and telling a little of the story of Camden is very helpful for the city, its resurgence and what everyone is doing to try to make it a better place.”
Gary Frazier, a Green Party candidate for Camden City Council and an organizer for Black Men for Bernie, said at a pro-Bernie Sanders event that started in the city on Monday that protesters will be at Thursday’s concert to send a message that the city is still struggling.
“I live here,” he said. “How’s it turning around when we have violence in our city, where you have youth killing youth?”
While Camden has drawn national attention for community policing — President Barack Obama lauded the efforts last year during a visit to the city — crime was up in the first six months of the year by nearly 14 percent and the city’s homicide total had more than doubled, according to state police statistics released this week.
Frazier said Camden’s downtown and waterfront may look better, but life is still the same in the city’s beleaguered neighborhoods, which have long suffered from a thriving drug trade and the loss of industry.
Jesus Hernandez, 63, has lived in Camden since 1972. He said he doesn’t see as much crime as a few years ago and long-abandoned homes are being razed. He pointed to a Rutgers nursing school under construction downtown.
“Now it’s lots better,” he said. “They’re building brand new buildings.”

Lady Gaga ‘breaks’ silence on engagement call-off
Just a “bad romance”?
After numerous reports exposing her shocking break-up with beau Taylor Kinney, Italian-American pop singer Lady Gaga released a statement on her Instagram account on Tuesday night to say that they are “taking a break”.
The 30-year-old “Bad Romance” singer released a statement on her Instagram account. “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other,” she explained.
An insider also confirmed to entertainment news site People that Gaga and Kinney’s long-distance relationship challenged them, but the star-studded couple is not throwing their relationship on the rocks.
“She’s working on an album, he’s working on his show, they aren’t in the same state, it was just hard,” the insider said. “They both love each other very much and they want it to work. It’s just been tough with the long distance.”
The couple was engaged last year and were in a relationship for five years. Gaga and Kinney, 35, started dating in 2011 when they met at Gaga’s “Yoü and I” music video shoot.
Citing reports by TMZ and E! News, Lady Gaga was recently seen not wearing her engagement ring during her recent trip to an orphanage in Mexico. Gianna Francesca Catolico

Music review: Lighten up, Lady Gaga was born that way-hey
If you haven't been under a rock the past couple of weeks, you'll likely have heard that Lady Gaga's in town for a couple of concert dates at the brand spankin' new SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena. And you'll likely have heard that certain religious groups are up in arms and would dearly love to see her gig(s) cancelled.
These aforementioned groups cite her "immorality" and "lewd behavior and attire," branding her as some sort of demonic pied piper who might lead the youth astray with songs like the controversial “Judas.”
While we understand how these groups may feel that the aforementioned song is disrespectful toward Christianity, we cannot help but also think that it's pretty hard to seriously bristle at a song whose hook goes, "Juda-juda-ah-ah-as" repeatedly. It just sounds too silly to be truly evil.
As to Lady Gaga's attire, or the lack thereof, her dishabille is really nothing Madonna hasn't done 10 times over through the years. And check out Miley Cyrus' costumes. Bra tops and virtual panties onstage! Heck, the "Wowowee" girls' costumes are thrice as lewd and inspire thrice the pulchritude!
Of course, Lady Gaga's version of the bra-top and panties outfit is a tad more garish. Last night at the MOA Arena, she opened her concert in an outfit that made her look like a comic book super villain. Her bra top looked like it was fashioned from Kevlar. We wouldn't have been surprised if Spider-man had suddenly fallen from the rafters to engage her in battle.
It's exactly this strange, comic book kind of outlandishness that this writer finds interesting about her. And so, bearing in mind the little known 12th commandment—thou shalt not be overly serious—we witnessed her concert with an open mind, a freethinker's eyes, and a musician's ears.
Some conservatives bristle at her set design. There's a castle-like structure onstage. It's supposed to be a chapel. We detected no offensive misrepresentations of how chapels are supposed to look, nor any demonic or satanic overtones. No inverted crucifixes nor any evidence of blood sacrifices.
Indeed, we found the sheer ambitiousness and visual spectacle of the set design rather impressive.
Thankfully, Lady Gaga changed out of her Kevlar bra top and into a poufy pink/white tutu.
Don't get us wrong, though. We're not exactly Gaga fans. Long have we felt—and last night's concert proved it—that Gaga's music lacks subtlety. The electro-synth sounds were rather strident. And so too, at times, was Gaga's voice. We should've brought ear plugs. Thanks to the strident frequencies amplified hundreds of times over by The Arena's brand new state-of-the-art sound system and broadcast over thunderous new loudspeakers, our hearing may just have lost a couple more notches in the 1 to 1.5 kilohertz range.
Oh, but kudos to Henry Sy's new Arena. Its sound system is great! Sightlines are fantastic! The Arena seems to be an ideal alternative to the Araneta Coliseum—for musical and sporting events alike.
And furthermore about the controversial “Judas,” perusing the song lyrics with an open mind reveals a surprising number of possible metaphors. Give the song half a chance and it might surprise you with its unexpected depth.
As this is a concert review as opposed to a poetry/songwriting workshop, we shall spare you a literary analysis of Lady Gaga's "demonic" oeuvre.
But seriously, give the song a chance. It might surprise even the most dyed-in-the-wool Katoliko cerrado.
Reacting to protests against her concert dates, her songs and her lifestyle, and to attempts at censorship of “Judas,” Gaga said at one point, "I'm not your government's creature, Manila!"
Awright! Rock 'n’ roll!
Same goes for her stance on homosexuality. Speaking about her song "Born This Way," she waxed eloquent on how hate crimes all over the planet have just got to stop, and expressed hope that her song might help foster awareness that it can be OK to be outside the norm.
If this is the anti-Christ, she's not as bad as they said she'd be.
Indeed, we must profess a certain grudging admiration for her techno-punk rock 'n’ roll rebel pugnacity and balls out take-me-or-leave-me stance.
Would that the songcraft caught up to the politics.
But her crew? Amazing. Just flat out amazing. The dancers were incredible! And so was the band. (If we're not mistaken and if the interwebz is to be believed, her backup band is The Darkness, a British band that did quite well for itself before it caught the Mother Monster's eye.) The drummer was just insane! And he had the endurance of an Asgardian, pounding out relentless rockin' grooves from start to finish.
A few caveats, however...
Her songs all sound alike. Quick, play “Bad Romance”! Now play “Poker Face”! Right? They're the same song!
The good news is, it makes for a kick-ass set, as the songs flow and dovetail easily into one another. The bad news is, it's just lazy songcraft and lazy musicianship.
As a singer, while she won't be winning any singing contests any time soon, she's undeniably competent. She sang reasonably in tune the whole night, although again, her vocal tone can get quite strident at times.
As a dancer, she's quite good (in our uneducated opinion).
As an artist, while we stop short of calling her visionary, we must give her props for having a daring, original vision and the guts to follow through on it with daring statements and garish musical spectacle.
When her songcraft and musicianship catch up to her politics, she'll truly be a monster.
'Til then, as long as she takes her own song to heart—just dance!—she should be ok.
Kudos to Ovation Productions for putting up a satisfying show, and for not caving in to the attack of the killer squares. Kudos too to SM Mall of Asia for their great new venue, The Arena, and also for not caving in to conservative pressure. –KG, GMA News
