Woman steals dog from man who suffered seizure, gets arrested

A woman in Colorado, United States, who allegedly stole a dog from a man who experienced a seizure has been arrested on unrelated charges.

Melody Mellon was arrested for allegedly stealing a truck that belongs to her ex-boyfriend’s mother. She was sleeping inside the truck when police tracked her down, KDVR reported on Thursday, Aug. 1.

As Mellon was transported to the Boulder County Jail, police claimed in the report that she “intentionally urinated and spit inside the patrol vehicle.”

Police identified Mellon as the suspect who took a man’s dog while he suffered from a seizure on July 30. Mellon was at a 7-Eleven store in Colorado when Robert Corbey — who had been feeling ill — suffered a seizure.

Surveillance footage captured Mellon taking Corbey’s dog, Sampson, while Corbey was being treated at the scene on Tuesday. Corbey was then taken to the hospital where he died.

Longmont Deputy Police Chief Jeff Satur spotted a couple walking Sampson in town on July 31. When the couple was questioned, they said that a woman gave them the dog. Later that day, Sampson was brought back to Corbey’s family.

Mellon is facing charges of auto theft, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest along with outstanding warrants related to drugs and a traffic violation. Hannah Mallorca/NVG

Sexting scandal shocks US high school

A massive sexting ring is rocking a high school in Colorado, with at least 100 students trading nude pictures and posting them on social media, news reports said Friday.

Some of the kids in the photographs were as young as 12, and included eighth graders from the middle school, The New York Times reported.

The students, many of whom are on the football team at Canon City High School, could now face criminal charges, reports said.

The school district announced Wednesday that "a number of our students have engaged in behavior where they take and pass along pictures of themselves that expose private parts of their bodies or their undergarments."

Noting that a "large number" of the high school football team players were implicated int he scandal, the district said it was canceling the high school's last football game of the season.

"Because we can't guarantee that every kid we put out on the field would be clean of this circumstance, we would just rather not put a team out at all," Canon City Schools Superintendent George Welsh told NBC television affiliate KOAA.

Noting it first learned of the behavior on Monday based on anonymous tips and student reports, the district stressed that taking a picture of yourself showing a naked private body part and sending it to another person was a felony.

The same applies if receiving such a picture and forwarding it to another person, or receiving such a picture and retaining possession of it over time.

According to The New York Times, police and the district attorney's office are weighing whether to file child pornography charges -- including felony charges -- against some of the participants.

Students circulated up to 400 lewd photographs, it added.

The police probe is focusing on whether any adults were involved, the school district said.

Students used password-protected "phone vaults," apps that often appear to be simple calculators at first glance, to hide the photos from their parents and school officials.

"It's been going on for years," one Canon City student told KRDO13, an affiliate of ABC television.

The student said some fellow students, especially girls, had been pressured to take pictures of themselves.

The school administration held an assembly Thursday to warn parents and explain the technology that allows their children to hide photos.

Canon City Sheriff Paul Schultz said the problem extends far beyond the town limits.

"With the new technologies, this is happening everywhere," he said. "Should parents be worried? Absolutely." —Agence-France Presse

Obama marks Newtown school shooting anniversary with call for gun control

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama marked the anniversary of the Newtown school shootings on Saturday by calling for tighter gun control and expanded mental health care.

"We haven't yet done enough to make our communities and our country safer," the President said in his weekly address. "We have to do more to keep dangerous people from getting their hands on a gun so easily. We have to do more to heal troubled minds."

The President did not mention the shooting at a Colorado high school on Friday where a student armed with a shotgun wounded at least two classmates before apparently taking his own life. The president's address is recorded in advance.

Obama is due later Saturday to observe a moment of silence at the White House and light candles in memory of the 20 children and six school workers who died in a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school a year ago.

Legislation that would have extended background checks for gun sales made online and at gun shows and to ban rapid-firing "assault" weapons failed to clear the US Senate this year. Opponents argued it is essential to hold the line on protecting Americans' right to keep and bear arms guaranteed under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

State legislatures have been more aggressive in enacting gun control legislation but those measures have faced some backlash.

Colorado passed gun control measures, but gun rights activists used recall elections to oust two state senators who backed them.

The White House has proposed spending $130 million to help teachers and other people who work with youth recognize the signs of mental illness and help people get treatment, but Congress has not yet allocated those funds.

So the administration will spend $50 million from its Health and Human Services budget to help community health centers hire more mental health professionals and provide more services and another $50 million from the Agriculture Department budget to improve mental health facilities in rural areas, the White House has said. — Reuters

James Holmes Mailed Massacre Plans to School Psychiatrist: Report

James Holmes, the suspect in the Aurora movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and 58 injured, mailed planned details of his rampage to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the July 20 attack, Fox News reports.

But according to a law enforcement source, the unopened package sat in a mailroom for as long as a week before it was discovered on Monday, July 23.

Police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus on Monday after the psychiatrist (who is also a professor at the school) reported receiving a package believed to be from Holmes.

Although that initial package proved to be harmless, a search turned up another package – this one reported to be from Holmes. Upon opening it, a notebook documenting the chilling details of Holmes's planned attack was discovered, according to the Fox report.

"There were drawings of what he was going to do in it – drawings and illustrations of the massacre," the source told Fox News.

The source added that the package had been in the mailroom since July 12, but it is unclear why it had not been delivered to the psychiatrist earlier.

It is also unknown whether the psychiatrist had any prior contact with Holmes.
