Android Lollipop coming to Samsung phones in January, leaked email suggests

Lollipop, the latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system, may be coming to Samsung devices as early as January 2015, if a supposed leaked email is accurate.

Google enthusiast site 9to5google.com cited a post on Reddit by a user claiming to be an employee of Samsung.

"I am employed by Samsung, and today they sent out an email to all stores in preparation for the new quarter and the new year. In that email, they said that we need to start preparing our devices for the Lollipop update, and gave instructions on how to prepare," the employee said in the Reddit post.

While the Reddit user said there was no date in the email, he/she said Samsung's S5 may be the first target for launch, followed by the Note 4 and Edge.

"After that, they are expecting the Note 3 and S4 to be the next wave, and then after that attention will turn to tablets," he/she said.

For its part, 9to5Google said Lollipop is already going over-the-air to Samsung devices in Spain and Poland.

"It’s only a matter of time before Android 5.0 finally rolls out to your Galaxy handset, and being patient is probably best (though there are leaked builds available if that’s your thing)," it said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Fans of Dingdong and Marian allotted an area in front of church to view wedding

With their wedding a much-anticipated event, fans of Kapuso stars Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera will be allowed to share in the moment outside the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City.

In an interview with Unang Hirit on Tuesday, Adlai Astoriano, head of security for the wedding, said fans are allowed at a certain area in front of the church, where they set up barricades.

"Pwedeng tumayo 'yung mga tao dito, pero hindi lang dito sa loob (ng barricades), para lang ma-clear natin 'yung area, and hindi magulo 'yung activity natin later," he said.

He added: "Medyo mahirap i-secure ito dahil nasa open area tayo, but we had about three months [of] preparations para sa security."

The area enclosed by the barricades will serve as the drop-off point of guests, as well as the bride, he added.

A widescreen has also been set up in front of the cathedral for the fans to witness the wedding from outside. The wedding ceremony is scheduled at 2:28 p.m. Tuesday.

Astoriano said they have coordinated with the barangay, which in turn talked to the residents of the area "to bear with us" for the said event.

For his part, Ramon Salas, captain of Barangay Immaculate Conception, said they prepared for the wedding as early as October.

He said most of the residents there are "excited" that Dantes and Rivera's wedding will take place there.

"Mixed emotions ang reaction nila. 'Yung iba excited, 'yung iba hindi nila maintindihan, pero overall, masaya naman 'yung mga tao," he said.

He added that Dantes is a "son" of the barangay, having been raised there.

Is There an Age Limit to Qualify for a Mortgage?

Many people are under the impression that once you reach a certain age, you won’t be able to qualify for a mortgage. Although there is some logic tied to that myth, it doesn’t make it true.

In fact, as long as you’re a legal adult (over the age of 18), it’s illegal for a mortgage lender to decline you based on your age—regardless of being 21, 60, or 99-years-old, you can’t be denied a mortgage because of your age.

But this isn’t to say that mortgage lenders are obligated to offer you a loan. Even if you’re in the prime of your life, you’ll have to prove to your lender that you can afford your mortgage and that the odds of you going into foreclosure are slim.

Here are the factors that lenders do look at:

Debt to Income Ratios
Most lenders expect that your total monthly debts will equal no more than 36 percent of your gross income. This includes credit card payments, student loans, and of course, your estimated mortgage payments.

For this reason, it’s most beneficial to pay off the rest of your debts before you apply for a mortgage. It will greatly increase your chances of securing the mortgage you need.

Income

Mortgage lenders also want your mortgage to take less than 28 percent of your monthly income. In other words, the more money you’re bringing in per month—the more likely you are to get approved for a mortgage loan.

This is where age can make a difference. Not necessarily in terms of the chances of you getting a loan, but rather, when it comes to what income you’re including.

For most people between the ages of 20-50, the majority of their monthly income will come from their employee salary. On the flipside, many people retire in their 50s and 60s, after which their income will mainly be comprised of pension payments, high interest savings incomes, investment incomes, and other sources.

Credit Rate
No matter how old you are, the most important part of your mortgage payment is going to be your credit score. As is the case with any loan, the higher your credit score, the more credit you’ll be able to secure. Most mortgage lenders consider anything above around 740 to be a good credit score.

If you’re currently falling below that, try to increase your score as much as possible before applying for a loan. You can do this buy using credit, and making regular large payments to bring down your debt at a favorable rate.

Which Province Has the Lowest Mortgage Rates in Canada?

However if you go a further east, and you can secure a five-year fixed mortgage with only 2.84% interest, if you’re purchasing in British Columbia.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba share the same rate as Ontario, while Quebec and all of the Maritime Provinces come in within two-hundredths under 3%.

So why is this the case? It can seem slightly confusing that there is so much variation across provinces even though 5-year fixed mortgage rates are driven by 5-year government bond yields.

The short answer is that mortgage rates don’t vary as much from province-to-province as they do from lender-to-lender.

Cait Flanders of RateHub has recently offered a little insight on the matter:

“Individual lending institutions set their rates based on what their profit objectives are, how much competition they have, and what their marketing strategy is. We’ve seen how this works on a national level, when one of the big banks (BMO) launches a new low rate before the other big banks, so they can get some press and gain a little more of the market share.”

Since a lot of small lenders and credit unions only exist in certain problems, this can make all the difference. For instance, if one credit union decides to offer a lower interest rate, it’s very likely that all small lenders in that province will be pushed to offer a similar rate.

Meanwhile, if a credit union in British Columbia lowers their rate, there’s no reason for lenders in Ontario to follow suit since they aren’t competing for the same market.

Then of course, we have the issue of supply and demand. Take Toronto or Vancouver for example, both of which are experiencing a big real estate boom. This increases competition levels, and lenders are forced by the market to offer competitive rates if they want to secure business.

On the other hand, in a small town in Nova Scotia where there are very few reliable mortgage brokers, they have more freedom to decide on their own mortgage rates.

When it comes down to it, no matter where you call home, you should always shop around for the best mortgage. Establishments like Northwood Mortgage are always the best bet for the best rates as we keep our prices competitive against both the big and little companies.

Roach: All Mayweather has to do is sign the contract

Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach is puzzled as to what it'll take to get Floyd Mayweather inside the same ring with his top pupil Manny Pacquiao

Tired of Mayweather's unending list of demands, Roach vented his frustration when he recently spoke to Boxingscene.com.

"I really don't know what it's going to take to get Mayweather to the table. I mean he doesn't want Bob Arum involved, Buboy (Fernandez) can't work the corner, I mean, this guy thinks he runs the f----- show," said Roach.

"Geez, gimme a f----- break. We're doing everything possible to make this fight happen on our side and that's all we can do."

Exasperated yet hopeful, Roach still believes that the long-awaited showdown can materialize.

"It's getting out there again, there's an audience out there and everybody is getting interested again because Mayweather came out and finally said something back to us. So now all he has to do is sign the contract." - RAF, GMA News

Britain posts 41 million wills, including Princess Diana’s

LONDON - Some 41 million British wills dating back to 1858, including those of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana, were made available in an online database Saturday.

The government's full archive of wills from England and Wales, stretching back more than 150 years, has been put on the probatesearch.service.gov.uk website.

It includes the wills of World War II prime minister Churchill; novelist Charles Dickens; Diana, princess of Wales; children's writer A. A. Milne; code-breaker Alan Turing; writer George Orwell and author Beatrix Potter.

The digital copies of the wills cost £10 ($15.50, €12.75) but basic details for some of them are available online.

"This fascinating project provides us with insights into the ordinary and extraordinary people who helped shape this country, and the rest of the world," said Courts Minister Shailesh Vara.

"It is a fantastic resource not only for family historians but also for anyone with an interest in social history or famous figures."

Previously the archives had only been publicly available to search in person.

In Churchill's will he gave £304,044—worth more than £5.1 million nowadays—to his family.

When Dickens died in 1870 he left a will written in cursive script that laid out highly specific directions for his funeral.

"I emphatically direct that I be buried in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he wrote, adding that mourners must not wear scarves, cloaks, long hatbands, "or other such revolting absurdity."

Orwell, who died in 1950, insisted that his archive of papers be preserved, while economist John Maynard Keynes, who died four years earlier, wanted most of his papers destroyed.

Milne, who wrote "Winnie The Pooh", gave shares of his future royalties and copyright to his favourite London club and Westminster School when he died in 1956.

"Peter Rabbit" creator Potter left a lengthy and generous will reflecting her love for conservation and nature.

Though the archive has been converted into digital format, the original paper records will still be kept in a temperature-controlled environment. — Agence France-Presse

Yoga may benefit heart health as much as aerobics

Those sun salutations and downward dogs could be as good for the heart as cycling or brisk walking, and easier to tolerate for older people and those with health challenges, according to a new review of existing research.

Based on 37 clinical trials, researchers found that doing yoga lowered blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate and other cardiovascular risk factors in increments comparable to those seen with aerobic exercise.

“Taken together, these improvements could facilitate and complement a regimen toward better cardiovascular health,” said Paula Chu, a doctoral candidate in health policy at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who led the study.

She and her co-authors caution in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, however, that larger studies are needed to understand how yoga improves health, how much of it is ideal and if there are differences in benefits from various types of yoga before the practice becomes a standard prescription for heart disease.

Nonetheless, yoga’s benefits have been long suspected, said Dr. Larry Phillips, a cardiologist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York.

“I think what we’ve seen is with yoga and the relaxation and behavior modification that goes along with it, there is a benefit to all patients, but especially those with heart disease,” said Phillips, who was not involved in the new analysis.

“Here we are able to see there are more measurable benefits than we’ve seen before,” he told Reuters Health.

Yoga originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, and has become a popular mind-body therapy in the West. Yoga’s breath control and body postures are believed to help nourish self-awareness, control stress and develop physical strength and balance.

The more traditional Hatha style of yoga is the most widely practiced in the U.S. But many specialized yoga “products,” such as hot yoga, power yoga and yoga retreats are part of a billion-dollar yoga industry.

One study estimates that 15 million Americans have practiced yoga at least once, according to Chu and her co-authors.

They focused on yoga’s effects on cardiovascular disease, as well as risk factors including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat and abnormal cholesterol levels that make up a profile—known as metabolic syndrome—that often leads to heart disease and diabetes.

The study team analyzed 37 randomized, controlled trials involving 2,768 people through December 2013. The trials either looked at yoga compared to no exercise or to aerobic exercises. Participants’ average age was 50 and they were followed for anywhere from 12 weeks to one year.

Those who did yoga had significant improvements in a range of risk factors. Systolic blood pressure (the top number) dropped by an average of 5.21 mm Hg, and diastolic pressure (the bottom number) dropped 4.9 mm HG. LDL “bad” cholesterol fell by an average 12.14 mg/dl and HDL “good” cholesterol rose by an average 3.20 mg/dl. Average heart rate was lower by a little over 5 beats per minute and weight loss averaged a bit over 5 pounds.

These changes were similar to the improvements seen among people who did aerobic exercise instead.

There were no changes, though, in fasting glucose levels or A1C, a measure of long-term blood sugar control in diabetics.

Chu and her colleagues note that one weakness of the results is that the analyzed trials included various types of yoga that were practiced for different amounts of time. These included Silver yoga (for seniors), Iyengar yoga (a form of Hatha that emphasizes correct postures), Viniyoga (which includes chanting) and Vinyasa (breath-synchronized movements.)

There were also a wide range of populations, from the young and healthy to older people with histories of heart disease, Chu told Reuters Health.

“We are not recommending anyone ditch their medicines or established medical or physical practices,” she said. “Individuals can talk to their doctors about whether yoga is a viable option for them.”

Yoga classes may be offered at health clubs, spas, senior centers and in other settings. Individual classes at stand-alone yoga centers tend to range from $15 to $30.

Phillips said he encourages his patients to develop a healthy lifestyle and exercise regimen, which could include yoga. He urges people to find a class that is appropriate for their comfort level and ability.

“I think the effects of relaxation do decrease stress levels and have a benefit to the heart,” said Phillips, adding that he had found doing yoga boosted his own mood and energy level. — Reuters

From film to smartphones: Kodak-branded phones, tablets coming in 2015

Kodak, a household name in photography, is coming out with its own range of smartphones and tablets with - you guessed it - image management tools.

The iconic imaging brand announced a partnership with Bullitt Group to build Android-based mobile devices that may debut in 2015.

"Kodak is one of the world's most recognizable brands. It is trusted by consumers as a marque of quality and innovation. We've taken that heritage and used it to inspire a range of beautifully designed devices that will let users take great pictures and edit, share, store and print them in an instant," Oliver Schulte, CEO of Bullitt Mobile, said in a news release (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kodak-and-bullitt-group-partner-for-new-range-of-mobile-devices-debuts-at-ces-286533301.html).

A separate article on tech site The Verge noted UK-based Bullitt builds rugged smartphones for construction firm Caterpillar (http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/26/7450621/kodak-bullitt-smartphone-ces-2015).

The first Kodak-branded handset is to be launched at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015. Other devices planned for 2015 include a 4G phone, a tablet and a connected camera.

According to the news release, the upcoming Kodak-branded Android devices will target users seeking a high-end but relatively simple experience.

The devices are to be preloaded with image capture, management and sharing features, as well as advanced remote management software to let "family members and friends to provide help and support if needed."

"By giving customers easy access to printing and sharing services while still offering the latest Android OS and features found on high-end smartphones, we will appeal to a large audience of users who value ease of use and stylish design as highly as they value functionality," Schulte said.

For her part, Eileen Murphy, Kodak's vice president for brand licensing, said they are "impressed with Bullitt Group's commitment to delivering a portfolio of products that embrace the quality and innovation that our brand is known for around the world."

Licensing

The Verge said Kodak had licensed its brand and underwent restructuring to escape bankruptcy last September.

It had spun off or shut down its consumer divisions and is focused on commercial printing.

"Kodak can get people interested with its name alone, but it'll have to contribute more than just branding to actually win customers' respect," it said.  — Reuters

Are You Missing Out on Cheaper Auto Insurance? Implement the Switch to Save Strategy

Tis’ the holiday season and that means sales everywhere you look. This includes sales and discounts in the ultra-competitive auto insurance industry, where with only a few minutes of online clicking and typing you could literally save hundreds on your next auto insurance policy.

During the holiday season auto insurance companies really ramp up their advertising and discounts because they know consumers are purchasing cars (new or upgrades) which need to be insured and the majority of auto insurance policies renew at the end and beginning of the year.  So take advantage of the lower premium prices by following these two simple steps:

1. Get a FREE, no obligation quote from the list of providers I have reviewed below. I get numerous emails from insurance brokers to list on this site, but the ones in the list below are the ones I currently recommend. They are nationally recognized, great companies and offer the best deals in my opinion. Other than AARP, I have had insurance will all these providers at some point. When you get the free auto insurance quotes, make sure you include similar characteristics (like deductibles, comprehensive coverage) so that you are comparing apples to apples.

2. Review the quotes to see which is the best deal for you, and then call your current provider. If you like your current insurance provider, encourage them to match or at least come close to matching the lowest price you found. Otherwise the decision is easy, switch and save! While it can be a little bit of a hassle to switch, saving a few hundred dollars can definitely ease the pain.

You will more than likely save money when/if you switch. Insurance companies know they have to provide you with a significant discount and reason to switch from your current provider. They call this an acquisition cost. Their hope is that when it comes time to renew, they can pass on higher premiums to you. That’s why you need to repeat the steps above and implement the switch to save strategy all over again.

Esurance - This insurance portal (recently acquired by All State) is now pretty well known thanks to it’s extensive advertising campaign on providing discounted car insurance quotes. They act like a broker between you and the other insurance companies and given their discount guarantee they are definitely worth visiting to get a free quote in this ultra competitive auto insurance market. Their one draw back is that they are not as strong as the other providers when it comes to multi-policy discounts. Getting or searching for insurance is ideal for those on a tight budget and happy to purchase/search online (i.e. no insurance agent!)

GEICO - This insurance company, owned by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, is well known thanks to it’s incessant advertising and actually does have one of the easiest to use websites, with clear guidance on key terms and coverage options.  I really liked their online feature that automatically obtained my vehicle and driver information from motor vehicle departments and other groups. This allowed me to get a faster and more accurate quote, without having to type in all my car information. It took me around 5 minutes to get a premium estimate (broken down by each insurance item) that I could easily customize to see what impacts changing one or more factors would have on the premium

USAA Auto Insurance - USAA membership is open to U.S. military service members, veterans who have honorably served, and their eligible family members. When you join, you get free financial resources, special savings and award-winning service. By switching to USAA Auto Insurance, you can save an average of $409 per year. If you are ex-military or an eligible family member this is definitely a company you need to get a quote from. I also like their flexible payment option feature which comes at no additional charge

“Safe Drivers Save up to 45% with Allstate is the claim the company makes. So I went and tried it for myself. Unfortunately, I got well below the average savings but that's probably because I continually review my insurance and switch if I can save more than $50 by changing insurance providers. But I do think if you have multiple policies and are in certain associations/groups you could do quite well with them. Definitely worth getting a free quote from All State as a comparison point if nothing else, given that they are one of the largest insurance companies out there.

AARP (for drivers over 50) - If you are a senior citizen then it is hard to beat insurance offers provided by the AARP. The rates are up to 15% lower than average for eligible drivers with good driving records. If you (or your spouse) are over 50, I would definitely get an online quote from AARP to see if you can benefit from a seniors discount. They also have a great in-person customer service line if you have questions and feel more comfortable talking to a real person to get a quote or sign up for an insurance policy

Pope, on Christmas Eve, urges world to be open to God

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis ushered the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics into Christmas on Wednesday, urging them to allow God to enter their lives to help combat darkness and corruption.

The 78-year-old Argentine pope led a solemn Christmas Eve Mass for thousands of people in St. Peter's Basilica. It is the second Christmas season for the pope, who was elected last year as the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years.

He has brought an air of simplicity to the Vatican, refusing many of the trappings of office, and has made plain his determination to reform the Vatican and bring the Church's hierarchy closer to rank-and-file Catholics.

In his homily, Francis, wearing white vestments, said Christmas is a time to remember that God's message of peace "is stronger than darkness and corruption"

"The question put to us simply by the infant's presence is, 'Do I allow God to love me?'" he said. "Do we have the courage to welcome with tenderness the difficulties and problems of those who are near to us ...?"

"How much the world needs tenderness today!" he said.

On Thursday morning, the pope will deliver his traditional Christmas Day "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing and message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Square to tens of thousands of people.

The pope has a busy year ahead of him. He has a number of international trips planned, including to Sri Lanka and the Philippines in January. He is also due to visit Africa, the United States and Latin America.

Next month Pope Francis is due to announce the names of a new batch of cardinals, the elite princes of the Church who are eligible to enter a secret conclave to elect a new pope after his death or resignation.

Another key project due to take shape in 2015 is the reform of the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

In Christmas greetings on Monday to the Vatican's top administrators, Pope Francis delivered a stinging critique of Vatican bureaucracy and outlined 15 illnesses plaguing the Curia, including "spiritual Alzheimer's". — Reuters

Google pays tribute to travelers in Christmas Day doodle

Google on Thursday paid tribute to those traveling home for Christmas with an animated doodle for Christmas Day 2014.

Visitors to Google’s homepage (www.google.com) were greeted with a doodle depicting various means of transportation people take to get home.

Holidays almost always involve travel and transport, and I wanted to celebrate the variety of ways we do this. Choosing a suitcase/backpack motif, I set about creating multiple people that transform and adapt to their surroundings,” doodler Matt Cruickshank said.

He said the background music “Seabird” by Matt Saxton plays along to the doodle.

Cruickshank described the doodle as a “door to door journey” seen through many eyes.

“Whatever our destination this holiday- a snowy mountain, a perfect wave or a crackling fire, we hope you enjoy the ride!” he said. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News

Exercise tied to prostate cancer survival

Among men with prostate cancer, those who lead active lifestyles have better survival rates than those who don’t, a new study suggests.

There are many benefits to being physically active, but the new results suggest there are “specific effects also on the survival among prostate cancer patients,” said the study's lead author Stephanie Bonn of the Stephanie Bonn.

“There is great potential for men diagnosed with prostate cancer to improve their own survival by being physically active,” she wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

In the US alone, about 210,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and about 28,000 die of it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Previous studies have found links between physical activity and survival in cancer patients, but few looked at prostate cancer, Bonn and her colleagues write in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

For the new study, they analyzed data on 4,623 men from Sweden diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer between 1997 and 2002. The information included details on the men's physical activity levels and general health until 2012.

Overall, the men who walked or biked daily for at least 20 minutes after their diagnosis had a 39 percent decreased risk of dying from prostate cancer and a 30 percent decreased risk of dying from any cause, compared to those who were less active.

For example, each year, among every 1,000 men who walked or biked at least 20 minutes a day, there were about 23 deaths from any cause, compared to about 38 deaths among every 1,000 men who exercised less.

Additionally, for every 1,000 men who exercised for an hour or more per week, there were about 21 deaths from any cause per year, compared to about 34 deaths among every 1,000 of those who exercised less.

The results were consistent regardless of the type of treatment the men received for their prostate cancer, Bonn said.

“However, our results apply to men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer and only those men who were still alive a number of years after their diagnosis were included in the study,” she said, adding that it most likely excludes men with more aggressive prostate cancers.

The new study can’t prove that more exercise extended the men's lives, but Bonn said it would be interesting to conduct a trial to measure the long-term and short-term effects of physical activity on prostate cancer.

The researchers say the association between exercise and prostate cancer could be related to hormones, fat tissue or inflammation. They plan to further investigate the exact mechanisms.

“At the moment we are working with a large study where men have donated both biological samples, and responded to a lifestyle questionnaire where physical activity was assessed in detail,” Bonn said. “We will study how different types of physical activity and also body weight may impact both the risk of prostate cancer as well as survival.” — Reuters

Real Madrid beat San Lorenzo to lift Club World Cup

Real Madrid won the Club World Cup for the first time by beating San Lorenzo 2-0 on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) with goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale after being forced into a scrap by the feisty South Americans.

Real scored in each half to clock up a 22nd successive win in all competitions in a bruising encounter which Guatemalan referee Walter Lopez just managed to keep under control.

The Marrakech crowd gave the European champions fervent support and were expecting a gala exhibition, which San Lorenzo were not going to allow despite the obvious gulf in class.

"It's a special day and this is a reward for all the effort and work that we have put in as a team," said Ramos.

Real nearly scored on their first attack when Karim Benzema just failed to connect with Ronaldo's low cross from the right.

After that, San Lorenzo did well to restrict Real to a couple of chances in the opening half hour only for their resistance to be broken at a corner when Ramos outjumped the defence in the 37th minute to break the deadlock.

Ramos had already been booked and could have been sent off for an ugly face-to-face rant at the referee as the game, which featured 40 fouls and numerous confrontations between players, threatened to get out of control.

Bale increased Real's lead in the 51st minute when he was left unmarked to collect Isco's pass and diving keeper Sebastian Torrico allowed the Welshman's weak shot to slip under his arm.

Real stopper Iker Casillas had to wait until the 65th minute to be tested for the first time when he saved a low diagonal effort from Emanuel Mas.

He then made more difficult stops to deny Juan Mercier and Enzo Kalinski, although Real also missed several chances to score a third on the break.

"I told the players in the dressing room that I was proud to have led this team this year," San Lorenzo coach Edgardo Bauza said.

"Each defeat hurts, even when it is against a team as successful as Real Madrid, and we have to accept it."

Real had previously won the old Intercontinental Cup three times, with their last triumph coming in 2002.

"We deserved to win this title," added coach Carlo Ancelotti. "We can say that Real Madrid is the best team in the world at this moment." - Reuters

George Clooney criticizes Hollywood in Sony cyber attack

Oscar winner George Clooney slammed Hollywood power players for not supporting Sony Pictures following the cyber attack on the company over the satirical comedy "The Interview" about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Sony on Wednesday pulled the Christmas Day release of the film depicting a fictional assassination of Kim after major theater chains said they would not show it due to unspecified threats made by the hackers.

Clooney, in an interview Friday with online trade publication Deadline.com, said no one would sign a petition he and his agent circulated to top Hollywood figures supporting the film's release.

The actor-director, whose past two directorial efforts were Sony releases, also criticized the media for failing to link the cyber attack to North Korea. The United States on Friday blamed the country for the devastating cyber attack, calling it an unacceptable act of intimidation and vowing to impose "costs and consequences" on those responsible.

"We're talking about an actual country deciding what content we're going to have. This affects every part of business that we have," Clooney said. "We cannot be told we can't see something by Kim Jong Un."

In the cyber attack on Sony and its employees, hackers released a stream of embarrassing emails and demanded that the film's release be scrapped.

"We have a responsibility to stand up against this. That's not just Sony, but all of us, including my good friends in the press who have the responsibility to be asking themselves: What was important? What was the important story to be covering?" Clooney added.

The news media's early coverage of the hack largely focused on the content of leaked emails between Sony employees and film producers.`

Clooney, who won Oscars for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the film "Syriana" in 2005 and Best Picture for "Argo" in 2012, said he is concerned about content in films and that it will now be judged differently.

"The movies we make are the ones with challenging content, and I don't want to see it all just be superhero movies. Nothing wrong with them, but it's nice for people to have other films out there," he added. -- Reuters

Obesity can be deemed a disability at work – EU court

BRUSSELS - Europe's top court ruled on Thursday that obese people can be considered as disabled, meaning that they can be covered by an EU law barring discrimination at work.

The decision followed a question from a Danish court, which was reviewing a complaint of unfair dismissal brought by Karsten Kaltoft, a child-minder, against a Danish local authority.

Kaltoft, who never weighed less than 352 pounds during his employment, argued that his obesity was one of the reasons he lost his job and that this amounted to unlawful discrimination, an allegation the council denied.

The Court of Justice of the European Union was asked to rule on whether EU law forbids discrimination on the grounds of obesity or whether obesity could be considered a disability.

The Luxembourg-based court ruled that EU employment law did not specifically prohibit discrimination on the grounds of obesity, and that the law should not be extended to cover it.

However, the court said that if an employee's obesity hindered "full and effective participation of that person in professional life on an equal basis with other workers" then it could be considered a disability.

This, in turn, is covered by anti-discrimination legislation.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, based on 2008 estimates, roughly 23 percent of European women and 20 percent of European men were obese. — Reuters

Pemberton arraigned Friday? US Navy inspects Olongapo court

Everything appears set for the arraignment on Friday of Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton, the US Marine charged with murder for the killing of Filipino transgender woman Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude.

While employees of the Olongapo City Regional Trial Court Branch 74 have kept mum, GMA News' Rida Reyes cited multiple sources who confirmed the proceedings would push through Friday.

In a report on "24 Oras," Reyes said Olongapo City police had adopted security measures at the courtroom where Pemberton is to be presented.

Representatives from the US Naval Forces led by Commander Timothy Stone also inspected the courtroom on Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, a representative from the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service also arrived but declined to give a statement.

For its part, the Olongapo City police said it had finalized its security plan and will implement it before dawn Friday.

More than 100 police personnel are to be deployed to the Hall of Justice. They are aside from partner agencies or force multipliers.

"We are prepared for any untoward incident na mangyayari," said city police spokesperson Inspector Vivian Reyes.

Custody

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the Philippine and US sides have different interpretations of "extraordinary cases," which the Philippines is invoking to get custody of Pemberton.

On the other hand, the US insists it should have custody of Pemberton.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said it would no longer insist on getting custody of Pemberton.

DFA spokesman Charles Jose said what is important is that Pemberton has submitted himself and is under detention at Camp Aguinaldo, guarded by Philippine authorities.

For its part, the US issued a statement it will cooperate with the Philippine government to make sure justice prevails. —Joel Locsin/NB/KBK, GMA News

Google fetes Russian painter Kandinsky in latest Doodle

Google on Tuesday paid tribute to Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky on his 148th birth anniversary with a doodle inspired by his works.

Visitors to Google's homepage, including that in the Philippines, were greeted with an abstract-looking doodle that reflected Kandinsky's style.

But as in the past, clicking on the doodle will take visitors to a Google Search Results page for "Wassily Kandinsky."

Kandinsky is credited as the first painter to make purely abstract works and used color to express emotion, UK's The Independent reported.

The Independent said Kandinsky's work can attract bids of "tens of millions of pounds" on today’s art market.

It said his 1909 painting "Study for Improvisation 8" sold for $23 million at Christie’s in 2012. In 1990, Sotheby’s sold his 1914 work "Fugue" for $20.9 million. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

India court blocks Bayer generic drug appeal

New Delhi, India - An Indian court has rejected German drug giant Bayer's bid to block a generic version of its blockbuster cancer treatment Nexavar by a local drug maker, a move hailed by activists on Saturday.

The judges rejected an appeal by Bayer on Friday that contested a March 2012 decision by India's patent controller, who had argued the price charged by Bayer for the liver and kidney drug -- $5,500-per-person, per month in India -- was far too costly for most Indians.

Medicins San Frontieres (MSF) on Saturday hailed the ruling, calling it a boost for public health.

The court's decision "demonstrates the independence of the Indian judiciary" in upholding the nation's right to legislate "with public health interests in mind", said Leena Menghaney, South Asia regional head of the medical charity's access campaign.

The court judgment highlighted India's "critical role" in "balancing intellectual property and public health", she said, adding it was clear to the court Bayer had recouped its drug research and development costs in just one year.

The Indian government gave local pharmaceutical house Natco Pharma a license to produce a copy of life-extending Nexavar at a 97-percent discount to the original price of the Bayer medicine in India.

"We are analyzing the (court) order and will determine any future course of action afterwards," Bayer said in a statement, adding the ruling "disappointed" the company.

The ruling could stoke tensions further with Western-based big pharmaceutical companies who say India flouts international patent protection law.

India says it is fully compliant with World Trade Organization patent rules. But the United States has already put India on a "watchlist" of intellectual property violators.

Since India's new right-wing government came to power in May, New Delhi has been under heavy pressure from Washington, prodded by the powerful US pharmaceutical industry, to dilute its strict patent laws.

Indian law stipulates drugs must "satisfy the test of novelty or inventiveness" to win patent protection and does not allow minor tweaks, called "evergreening," to prolong patent life.

Western companies say India's powerhouse generics industry and stringent patent filtering reduce commercial incentives to produce cutting-edge medicines.

India'a Lawyers' Collective, another rights group, said  the "momentous" judgment held wide-ranging implications for access to other medicines.

India's vast generics industry is a major supplier of cheap copycat, life-saving drugs to treat diabetes, cancer and other diseases afflicting people locally and globally who cannot afford expensive branded versions.

But health economists say it doesn't matter how far drug prices drop in India for some of the 1.25-billion population, as they are too desperately poor to afford them. India is home to one-third of the world's poorest, according to the World Bank. — Agence France-Presse

Review finds best exercises to prevent women’s knee injuries

Some training methods are better than others at preventing knee ligament injuries in young women, researchers advise.

Based on 14 previous studies, the researchers say training programs that focus on strengthening the legs and hips and stabilizing the abdomen are the most effective for preventing injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and doing more than one type of exercise is also important.

“We know neuromuscular training can reduce ACL injury in female athletes, but we were not sure what exercises are the best to attain the maximal prophylactic effects,” said Dai Sugimoto of The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention and the Boston Children’s Hospital Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine department, in Massachusetts.

The ACL is the key stabilizing ligament in the knee, and is most often injured during sports that involve quick turns or pivoting movements.

ACL injuries are very serious and can take a long time to heal, the researchers write in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. College athletes with ACL injuries lose more time on the field than athletes with ankle or traumatic head injuries, according to the researchers.

Young women facing the greatest risk are those who play sports involving a lot of pivoting, such as soccer, basketball, lacrosse and handball, according to Sugimoto. He added that the most common age for women to be injured is around 14 to 17 years.

Grethe Mykelburst, who outlined the risks involved with ACL injury in an email, said, “it takes you out of your sport for 6-12 months, and some don’t succeed to return to their previous level.” She added that the risk of getting osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition, in the knee is high after injury.

Mykelburst, a sports physical therapist and associate professor at the Oslo Sport Trauma Research Center in Oslo, Norway, was not involved in the review.

Sugimoto’s team analyzed 14 studies of exercise intervention programs, looking specifically at four different exercise approaches including balance, jump training, abdomen stabilizing exercises and strengthening of the legs and hips.

Training programs that aimed to build strength in the back of the legs and in the hips significantly reduced the number of ACL injuries when compared with programs that did not. That was also true of programs that focused on strengthening and developing more control of the abdomen.

Programs that included more than one type of exercise were significantly more effective than those using only one type. “Neuromuscular training has to incorporate many exercise modes,” Sugimoto told Reuters Health. “Performing only one exercise mode seems ineffective.”

The researchers note that while balance and jumping exercises were somewhat helpful in reducing injury, they were not effective unless combined with other exercises.

The study lists a number of specific helpful exercises, including Russian hamstring curls, sit-ups, pushups and bench press. Sugimoto emphasized the hamstring curls in particular, as they work both to strengthen the legs and hips and require abdomen control.

“With inclusion of these exercises as well as a variety of exercise modes, athletes can attain the fullest benefit from neuromuscular training and prevent ACL injury,” Sugimoto said.

Every year 350,000 people seek ACL reconstruction surgery in the United States, the authors point out.

Sugimoto said that although surgery is the best available treatment, 24 to 30 percent of high school athletes who undergo the surgery tear their ACL again within the next several years.

“That’s why we need to prevent ACL injury in first place to avoid subsequent ACL injury and preserve a healthy knee joint,” Sugimoto said.

“The evidence is strong that neuromuscular training works,” Mykelburst agreed. “As an athlete or a coach, you can’t afford not using the prevention program and exercises that exist,” she added. — Reuters

Art Basel Miami Beach grows as global attraction, cultural marketplace

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - From the untold millions in sales of contemporary art to luxury brand-sponsored parties and an invasion of street artists, Miami Art Week ended its 13th and largest annual fair on Sunday, cementing its reputation as one of south Florida's top tourist draws.

Anchored by the contemporary art show, Art Basel Miami Beach, wealthy art collectors mixed with penniless art enthusiasts to take in the smorgasbord of works on show.

“The driving force behind this show, behind the art market in general is it’s been more global this year,” said Mathias Rastorfer, co-CEO of Zurich-based Galerie Gmurzynska. “We’ve seen collectors from Asia, Latin America, some from Russia.”

The gallery sold a 1918 Picasso painting titled Venus and Amor to a private collector for about $1 million as well as a pair of black and gold circles by Robert Indiana works for $3 million.

New York City and Hong Kong-based Lehmann Maupin Gallery sold Adriana Varejão's Polvo Portraits IV for about $400,000 and Teresita Fernández's Golden for about $300,000.

Following record-setting auctions in New York City, galleries said contemporary art is securing its place as both an asset and a symbol of sophistication among the wealthy. Moreover it’s readily available, unlike works by Renaissance or modern masters.

“After someone has bought the mansion and the yacht and everything else they might to turn to art,” said Mary-Anne Martin, whose Latin American specializing gallery Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art had a $1 million Wifredo Lam painting on hold for a collector.

On Miami’s mainland, where nearly two dozen satellite fairs set up, crowds packed the sidewalks of the hip Wynwood district, to see massive street art murals by Shepard Fairey, Cleon Peterson, Ron English and Brazil’s Os Gêmeos.

At one of the fairs, Art Miami, Barcelona-based Galeria Mayoral sold Marc Chagall’s 1962 painting Esquisse Sur la Branche for $550,000 while New York City’s Dranoff Fine Art sold an Andy Warhol portrait for $460,000, director Nick Korniloff said.

Meanwhile exclusive, luxury brand-sponsored parties were commonplace as the first week in December in Miami has become a magnet for world’s rich, including real estate firms marketing $50 million apartments.

Developer Craig Robins welcomed crowds to the Design District, now home to dozens of luxury stores like Hublot, Bulgari and Christian Louboutin, while Buenos Aires-based developer Alan Faena hosted a Argentine barbecue for his forthcoming Miami Beach condominium and adjoining performance and exhibition space. — Reuters

Facebook lets you search for old posts

Facebook users looking for a memorable post will now have an easier time doing so, after the social networking giant beefed up its search capabilities to find specific posts.

In a blog post, Facebook vice president of search Tom Stocky said search results are personalized, and only the user can see things that have been shared with him or her.

"With a quick search, you can get back to a fun video from your graduation, a news article you’ve been meaning to read, or photos from your friend’s wedding last summer," Stocky said.

He said the beefed-up search will be available not only for desktop and laptop computers, but also for the iPhone. The updates are to roll out this week.

"Search at Facebook is a long-term effort. Today is a step toward helping you tap into the experiences and perspectives of your friends," Stocky said.

A separate report on tech site Mashable said that before this, typing something like "Hawaii" into Facebook's search box would only lead to pages and apps related to Hawaii.

Now, it said the search results page will display all the posts a user previously viewed that contain the word "Hawaii."

"Facebook has been testing it on a small subset of users since September 2013," it added.  ELR, GMA News

Facebook users warned vs. Christmas scam for 65in TV

As Christmas draws even closer, cybercriminals are becoming more creative in drawing up scams targeting users of social networking giant Facebook.
One of the latest scams involves a supposed offer of 250 Samsung 65-inch Ultra 4k HD curved TVs, Online Threat Alerts reported.
"The scam will attempt to trick you into commenting on,liking it, sharing it and completing surveys, by claiming that you have a chance of receiving one of the 250 Samsung 65" Ultra 4K HD Curved TVs that are being given away," it said.
While the scam is not associated with the companies supposedly offering to give away the curved TVs, it is meant to get Facebook users to like, share or comment on the post.
Such actions could spread the scam and bait more potential victims.
Users who fall for the scam are asked to complete surveys where the scammers will get a commission.
"If you receive the same post on your Facebook Wall or Timeline, please report it as spam and then delete it," the site advised. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Giant white truffle fetches more than $61,000 at New York auction

NEW YORK - A white truffle from Italy, said to be the largest in the world, sold for $61,250 at an auction in New York on Saturday, Sotheby's said.

The truffle, which weighs 4.16 lbs (1.89 kg), was purchased by a buyer from Taiwan who bid by telephone, the auction house said.

The massive fungus was discovered in Italy last week by Sabatino Truffles, one of the largest suppliers. It is stored in an airtight box, Sotheby's said.

White truffles, one of the most coveted and expensive delicacies in the world, are found only in certain areas of Italy from October through December. They grow wild in forests and are detected by specially trained dogs and experienced hunters.

They vary in size and are valued for their flavor and aroma.

Sotheby's said the truffle was the largest ever found. It is nearly twice the size of a truffle that was sold in 2010 for $417,200, although the two sale prices are not necessarily comparable, a Sotheby's spokesman said.

The earlier sale took place at a charity dinner in Hong Kong while Saturday's auction had only one bidder, he said.

The Balestra family of Sabatino Truffles said it plans to donate proceeds from the sale to several charities. — Reuters

Facebook runs Safety Check for Typhoon Ruby

Social networking site Facebook has activated its Safety Check tool amid the onslaught of Typhoon Ruby in the Philippines, and neighboring countries.

Through Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit): Facebook Safety Check, a Facebook user can let his friends and family know that they are safe and check on others in the affected area. It also lets users mark their friends as safe.

According to an article by Naomi Gleit, VP of Product Management; Sharon Zeng, Product Manager; and Peter Cottle, Software Engineer, the Safety Check is a proactive approach to communicating and staying connected after a disaster.

Inspired by the devastating tsunami and earthquake in Japan three years ago, Facebook's engineers "set out to create a simple and easy-to-use tool that allows people to connect with their network of friends and family when it matters most," the article said.

When the Safety Check tool is activated, Facebook will determine the user's location as listed in his profile, his last location if the user opted in to the Nearby Friends product, and the city where the user is currently using the internet.

The user can then mark that he is outside the affected area if the location gathered by the software is wrong. If safe, the user can select “I’m Safe” and a notification and News Feed story will be generated with his update. The user's friends can also mark him as safe.

If the user has friends in the area of a natural disaster and the tool has been activated, he will receive a notification about those friends that have marked themselves as safe. Clicking on this notification will take the user to the Safety Check bookmark that will show him a list of their updates.

Canada approves Burger King's bid for Tim Hortons

OTTAWA – Canada's government approved Burger King Worldwide's C$12.64 billion ($11.10 billion) takeover of coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons Inc., which will create a new company based north of the border.

Burger King had agreed to buy the iconic Canadian company in August in a transaction that would create the world's third-largest fast-food restaurant group, but the cash-and-stock deal was subject to approval by regulators.

"The result of this transaction is this new global company... which will now be based in Canada," Industry Minister James Moore said in a statement.

"Our government is pleased to see companies like Burger King investing in Canada's economy and looking to benefit from our low taxes and open markets."

Moore said that after a review of the deal, Burger King had agreed to a number of commitments, including setting up the headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, and listing the company on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Tim Hortons will be managed as a distinct brand, and at least half of the members of the brand's board will be Canadians.

Burger King has also agreed to expand Tim Hortons by opening new restaurants at a significantly greater pace than currently planned both in the United States and globally.

Windows 8.1 finally overtakes XP in market share

Windows 8.1 has finally overtaken the 13-year-old Windows XP in November, though only narrowly, a tech site reported this week.

PC World cited figures from Statcounter showing Windows 8.1 had 9.31 percent of the desktop OS market share in October to 10.95 percent in November.

"Windows 8.1 is likely benefiting from the back-to-school season, as most new PCs are shipping with the operating system on board. Some Windows 8 users may still be getting around to the free upgrade as well, as Windows 8 usage dropped from 5.94 percent to 4.9 percent in November," it said.

In contrast, XP dropped from 11.95 percent to 10.69 percent during the same period.

But figures from another metrics firm, Netmarketshare, showed XP ahead of 8.1.

"It seems likely that Windows 8.1 will land on top for both metrics firms within a month or two," it said.

Microsoft has been discouraging users from continuing to use XP, which debuted in 2001, by stopping security updates for it.

Windows 7

However, it is still Windows 7 - rolled out in 2009 - that remains the most used version of Windows to date.

PC World said Windows 7 takes up 50.34 percent of the desktop market share.

"Expect a major upgrade offensive against Windows 7 next year, with rumors of free or cheap consumer upgrades to the more desktop-friendly Windows 10," PC World said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

The Star Wars VII trailer –done all in LEGO

The teaser trailer for the latest installment of the "Star Wars" saga has joined the ranks of hits that have gotten the LEGO treatment.

A YouTube user created a faithful version of the trailer using brick versions of the characters and vehicles—and yes, the lightsaber.

"I had nothing to do yesterday so I started once the trailer came out so i built the Falcon, The X-Wing, (t)he speeder bike thingy, a mini tie fighter, tried to build all the sets, and get all my minifigures put together... then just filming took forever especially the the special effects," said YouTube user Snooperking.

Snooperking also said the trailer involved stop motion in front of a green screen.

While Snooperking commented his work "isn't even that good," tech site Mashable commented, "It takes a real Jedi to show such dedication." (http://mashable.com/2014/11/29/lego-star-wars-the-force-awakens/)

World’s tallest floating Christmas tree lit up in Rio de Janeiro

The world's largest floating Christmas tree was lit in Rio de Janeiro Saturday (November 29), officially kicking off the holiday season in the beachside city.

Close to 200,000 tourists and locals flocked to the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon to watch the 542 ton, 85-meter-tall (279 feet) tree illuminate in a burst of color and lights.

The crowd itself lit up as a spectacular fireworks display coincided with the 19th annual tree lighting ceremony.

This year's theme was a "Christmas of Light" full of "wishes for all."

The tree is lit with 3.1 million micro light bulbs, 2,150 strobe effects, 120,000 meters (393,700 feet) of light hoses and 100 LED reflectors.

The base of the massive structure rests on 11 floats that form a 30 meter-by-30 meter (98 foot-by-98 foot) base to support the metal tree.

The annual celebration has become a mainstay for tourists who came out in droves along with thousands of locals who came to be part of the celebration.

"I loved it. It was marvellous, the show. Everything was lit up. It was perfect," Gilberto Luiz said.

"It was very exciting. It's a wonderful time of year of peace and togetherness and it's truly a celebration worth coming out to see… every year if you can," another spectator, Sueli Salles said.

The Christmas tree was first erected in 1996 and its lighting has become Rio's third biggest tourist event after Carnival festivities and New Year's Eve on Copacabana beach.

Brazil's Pele improving, still in intensive care – hospital

SAO PAULO - Brazilian soccer great Pele "is in better condition" though he remains in an intensive care unit being treated for a urinary tract infection, the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said on Friday.

Pele, 74, is receiving renal support treatment, which helps kidneys to filter waste products from the blood, after surgery to remove kidney stones earlier this month. He is not on vasoactive drugs or other supportive therapies, the hospital said.

Pele, often called the greatest soccer player in history, has suffered a long list of health problems in the past decade, including emergency eye surgery for a detached retina and a hip replacement.

His manager, Paul Kemsley, said on Thursday he was expected to make a full recovery and that reports of his condition are being "greatly exaggerated."

Known as "the King of soccer" in Brazil, Pele played in four World Cups and helped Brazil win the global tournament three times, the last in Mexico in 1970. — Reuters

Black Friday shopping crowds thin after Thanksgiving rush

WEST HARTFORD, Conn./CHICAGO - Mall crowds were relatively thin on Black Friday in a sign of what has become the new normal in US holiday shopping: the mad rush is happening the night of Thanksgiving and more consumers are picking up deals online.

Most major retailers now open Thursday evening and are extending holiday deals rather than limiting them to one day. The result is a quieter experience on what has traditionally been one of the busiest, and sometimes most chaotic, shopping days of the year.

"It just looks like any other weekend," said Angela Olivera, a 32-year-old housewife shopping for children's clothing at the Westfarms Mall near Hartford, Connecticut. "The kind of crowds we usually see are missing and this is one of the biggest malls here. I think people are just not spending a lot."

The crowds normally reserved for Black Friday morning appeared on Thursday night. For instance, more than 15,000 people lined up for the opening of the flagship store of Macy's Inc in New York on Thursday. Retailers also said they were capturing more of the holiday budget online.

Shares of Macy's, Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp were all up from 2.2 percent to 3 percent on Friday afternoon as investors saw encouraging signs in the long lines on Thursday night and with executives making bullish comments about demand. Lower gasoline prices were also giving the shares a boost, analysts said.

"It's off to a good start," said Charlie O'Shea, a retail analyst at Moody's Investors Service, about the shopping season after visiting nearly two dozen stores in northern New Jersey over the past two days.

Police arrested 11 people associated with the OUR Walmart group for blocking traffic in front of a downtown Chicago Wal-Mart store. The protest was one of 1,600 planned across the United States by the group, which is pushing for higher wages and benefits for the retailer's employees.

"Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart you're no good. Treat your workers like you should," a crowd of several dozen shouted outside the store.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said: "The crowds are mostly made up of paid union demonstrators, and they do not represent the views of the 1.3 million associates" who work for the company, the largest private employer in the United States.

Buchanan also said one of the demonstrators hit a customer at the Chicago store, prompting a complaint to the police.

Overall Black Friday online sales as of 1200 EST (1700 GMT) were up 6.4 percent from a year earlier, according to IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark. Online sales were up 14.3 percent on Thanksgiving Day.

Wal-Mart said Thursday was its second-highest online sales day ever after last year's Cyber Monday, which is the Monday after Thanksgiving, when online retailers promote bargains.

Target CEO Brian Cornell said his company rang up a record day of online sales on Thursday, and was seeing brisk demand in its stores. He said the company was selling 1,800 televisions a minute between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday night.

Heavy traffic caused the Best Buy Co Inc website to crash for a little over an hour earlier on Friday, but as of afternoon it was back up and running, a company spokesman said.

The National Retail Federation is projecting that sales for November and December will rise 4.1 percent to $616.9 billion, which would mark the most bountiful holiday season in three years. Holiday sales grew 3.1 percent in 2013.

Some shoppers said the price of gasoline - expected to go even lower after the price of crude oil fell to a multiyear low - could make them more inclined to spend.

"My budget is pretty tight this year and gas is a tremendous expense because I have to drive my daughter around a lot," Kristen Akeley, 46, who works at an elementary school, said while shopping for clothes at a Target in Connecticut.

"My gas expense has fallen from $150 a week to $80 a week and that is big savings at this time of the year." — Reuters

Skype's picture-in-picture video chat comes to Android phones

Users of Skype, Microsoft's videoconferencing software, can now enjoy that picture-in-picture feature on their Android phones.

The latest Skype app dated Nov. 25 ports the feature - available earlier on Android tablets - to Android smartphones.

"Picture in picture view lets you keep a video call going – for phones now too!" read the description on Google Play.

It also allows one to receive photos from Skype for iPhone and other new clients, and supports formatted text.

Chats also load faster, especially when opened from a notification.

A separate article on PC World said the new app will be appreciated greatly by heavy users.

"It’s nice to see Microsoft finally apply what it’s already done on tablets to its phone version of the app. And with phones getting ever bigger, there’s plenty of opportunity to put this to use," it added.  — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Thursday

HONG KONG - Hong Kong student leader Joshua Wong was banned from a large area in Mong Kok as a condition of bail on Thursday after he was arrested during scuffles with police as they cleared one of the largest protest sites that have choked the city for weeks.

Wong and activist lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung, who RTHK radio said was also banned from Mong Kok, were charged with obstructing court bailiffs and did not enter a plea.

They are due to appear again in court on Jan. 14.

Wong, Leung and Lester Shum were among more than 100 people arrested in Mong Kok over the past two days. Wong's student group Scholarism confirmed the court ban.

The protesters are demanding open nominations for the city's next chief executive nomination in 2017. Beijing said in August it would allow a vote, but only among pre-screened candidates.

Lined with banks, noodle shops and gritty tenements, the streets of Mong Kok have been a key battleground for protesters and mobs intent on disbanding them, and was viewed as the protest site most likely to resist clearance.

While the protesters re-grouped and tried to storm back onto the roads, they ultimately failed to penetrate the mass of police armed with pepper spray and batons deployed to defend the major traffic intersections. Some protesters were hospitalised with head injuries from police batons.

The Mong Kok clearance was the second time in as many weeks that police, court bailiffs and workers moved to enforce court-ordered injunctions to clear the streets. The removal of the protesters' barricades, tents and furniture is a major blow to the movement which has been trying to wrest greater political freedom from Beijing.

The main protest site in Admiralty next to the city's chief executive office and barracks for China's People's Liberation Army remains largely intact. There is also a small protest site in the Causeway Bay shopping district.
