New Android bug discovered that can brick your phone
It's not a good week for owners of mobile devices running Google's Android operating system: a newly-discovered bug that could render your phone dead and unusable.
Security vendor Trend Micro said the vulnerability, when exploited, threatens to render the phone silent and its screen lifeless.
"This vulnerability is present from Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) up to the current version, Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop). Combined, these versions account for more than half of Android devices in use today," mobile threat response engineer Wish Wu said in a blog post.
Worse, Wu said the Android engineering team has yet to issue a patch even if it had been informed as early as May.
According to Wu, Trend Micro reported the vulnerability to Google May 15, and Google acknowledged the report as a "low priority vulnerability" on May 20.
Earlier this week, Motherboard quoted security researcher Joshua Drake as saying a texting bug may leave Android users prone to attacks from hackers.
Drake said the bug is found in an Android media playback engine called Stagefright.
"This vulnerability can be triggered while you sleep... Before you wake up, the attacker will remove any signs of the device being compromised and you will continue your day as usual—with a trojaned phone," Drake said.
Both bugs are related in that they are based on the way Android handles media files.
Trend Micro said the more recent bug can be exploited via a specially crafted MKV media file.
MKV files
Trend Micro said the newly discovered vulnerability can be exploited either via a malicious app installed on the device, or through a specially-crafted web site.
It said the malicious app The first technique can cause long-term effects to the device: an app with an embedded MKV file that registers itself to auto-start whenever the device boots would case the OS to crash every time it is turned on.
Nonresponsive device
Trend Micro said the bug, once exploited, can cause the device "to become totally silent and non-responsive."
"No ring tone, text tone, or notification sounds can be heard. The user will have have no idea of an incoming call/message, and cannot even accept a call. Neither party will hear each other.
The UI may become very slow to respond, or completely non-responsive. If the phone is locked, it cannot be unlocked," it said.
It also said this exploit could pave the way for ransomware.
"Further research into Android – especially the mediaserver service – may find other vulnerabilities that could have more serious consequences to users, including remote code execution," Wu said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

US economy: Consumer spending bolsters second-quarter growth
WASHINGTON - U.S. economic growth accelerated in the second quarter as solid consumer spending offset the drag from weak business spending on equipment, suggesting a steady momentum that could bring the Federal Reserve closer to hiking interest rates this year.
Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.3 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. First-quarter GDP, previously reported to have shrunk at a 0.2 percent pace, was revised up to show it rising at a 0.6 percent rate.
The revision to first-quarter growth reflected steps taken by the government to refine the seasonal adjustment for some components of GDP, which economists said left residual seasonality in the data, as well as new source data.
The Fed on Wednesday described the economy as expanding "moderately" while upgrading its view of the labor market and saying housing had shown "additional" improvement. The Fed's assessment left the door open for a possible hike in interest rates in September, which would be the first rise since 2006.
A separate report showed first-time applications for state unemployment benefits increased 12,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 267,000. However, claims remained not too far from their cycle lows.
The dollar extended gains against a basket of currencies, while prices for U.S. Treasury debt fell slightly.
Though second-quarter GDP growth was a bit below economists' expectations for a 2.6 percent rate, the growth composition pointed to firming domestic fundamentals.
A measure of private domestic demand, which excludes trade, inventories and government expenditures, increased at a 2.5 percent rate after rising at a 2.0 percent pace at the start of the year.
Growth in the second quarter was boosted by consumer spending as households used some of the windfall from cheaper gasoline in late 2014 and early this year to go shopping. The strengthening labor market also encouraged consumers to loosen their purse strings.
Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, grew at a 2.9 percent rate from a downwardly revised 1.8 percent pace in the first quarter. Consumer spending was previously reported to have increased at a 2.1 percent rate at the start of the year.
The saving rate fell to 4.8 percent from 5.2 percent.
ENERGY DRAG PERSISTS
Housing also supported the economy in the second quarter, as did exports, and state and local government spending.
However, the energy sector continued to weigh on growth as it struggles with the lingering effects of deep spending cuts by oil-field companies like Schlumberger (SLB.N) and Halliburton (HAL.N) in the aftermath of a more than 60 percent plunge in crude oil prices last year.
Business spending on structures fell at a 1.6 percent rate after stumbling 7.4 percent at the start of the year. Investment on equipment fell at a 4.1 percent rate.
Spending on mining exploration, wells and shafts plunged at a 68.2 percent rate, the largest decline since the second quarter of 1986. This category dropped at a 44.5 percent pace in the first quarter.
But there are signs that the energy spending rout might be nearing an end. Data last Friday showed U.S. energy firms added 21 oil rigs last week, marking the third increase over the past 33 weeks.
Schlumberger said last week it believed the North American rig count may be bottoming and that a slow rise in both land drilling and completion activity could occur in the second half of the year.
Exports rebounded in the second quarter, despite a strong dollar, while imports rose moderately. That left a smaller trade deficit that added 0.13 percentage point to GDP growth.
Inventory investment slowed after the first quarter's brisk pace. Businesses accumulated $110.0 billion worth of merchandise, down from $112.8 billion in the first quarter, good news for the remainder of the year.
With oil prices rising during the second quarter and consumer spending picking up, inflation accelerated sharply.
The personal consumption expenditures price index rebounded at a 2.2 percent rate, the fastest since the first quarter of 2012, after falling at a 1.9 percent rate at the start of the year. Excluding food and energy, prices increased at a 1.8 percent pace. — Reuters

Study finds promising experimental MERS vaccine
An experimental vaccine for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) showed promising results in animal testing, sparking an immune system response that could lead to a vaccine for people, researchers said Tuesday.
Currently there are no licensed vaccines for MERS, which first appeared in 2012 and has caused numerous scares including a recent deadly outbreak in South Korea.
Vaccinated mice produced antibodies that neutralized MERS strains, according to a study from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The vaccines that caused the largest immune responses in mice were then administered to monkeys.
The monkeys were protected from a serious lung infection characteristic of MERS when given the experimental vaccines and then exposed to a version of the virus, the study said.
The study with the promising findings was published in the journal Nature Communications.
Researchers are now working on versions of the vaccine that could be tested in clinical trials for humans.
The MERS outbreak in South Korea in May infected some 180 people, killing 36. The World Health Organization has identified 1,368 cases since 2012 including 490 deaths, most of them in Saudi Arabia. — Agence France-Presse

Samsung unveils world's first wireless charger monitor
Your computer monitor may soon be much more than just an afterthought, after Korean electronics giant Samsung made the first monitor that can wirelessly charge a mobile phone.
Samsung Electronics said the SE370, which has 23.6- and 27-inch variants, has an integrated wireless charging function for mobile devices.
“Technology should support, not interfere with, active lifestyles. Our customers increasingly rely on mobile devices to obtain information and interact with others; so by doing away with the clutter on their desks, we are helping them to use their mobile devices in a smarter way,” said Samsung senior vice president for visual display business Seok-gi Kim.
But the wireless charging functionality is "limited" to devices that use the leading Qi wireless charging standard.
Samsung said Qi, developed by the Wireless Power Consortium, is one of the most readily-available global interface standards.
The charger is a circular area integrated in the monitor’s stand.
"Users simply need to place their device on the stand’s charging area to initiate automatic charging, which is confirmed by an LED light," Samsung said.
It added the new monitor eliminates the hassle of having to buy and keep separate charging kits.
Other features include:
- AMD FreeSync technology to synchronize the screen refresh rate with the frame rate of a user’s AMD graphics card, to improve gaming and video playback.
- 4ms response time for clear and smooth tracking
- an economy function that reduces screen brightness for increased energy efficiency.

Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, dead at 22
ATLANTA - Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of late singer Whitney Houston, died on Sunday at the age of 22, some six months after suffering irreversible brain damage in an incident at her suburban Atlanta home, her family said in a statement.
Brown, whose father is R&B singer Bobby Brown, was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her home by her partner and a friend on Jan. 31. She was moved by her family to hospice care on June 24.
"She is finally at peace in the arms of God," her family said. "We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."
As news of her death became public, media crews and some fans gathered on a darkened cul de sac in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth, where ornate street lamps illuminated the ivy-covered brick nursing home where Brown died.
"We just wanted to show our respect," said Ali Joyner, 15, who persuaded her mom and a neighbor to drive the 20 miles from their home in Dacula, Ga. "I just loved her mom, Whitney. And Bobbi is part of that."
Her death came three years after her Grammy-winning mother, who had battled substance abuse, drowned in a bathtub in a Beverly Hills hotel at age 48. Authorities said cocaine abuse and heart disease contributed to Houston's Feb. 11, 2012 death.
Bobbi Kristina Brown inherited her mother's fortune.
A $10 million civil lawsuit filed last month accuses Bobbi Kristina Brown's partner, Nick Gordon, of causing her life-threatening injuries and of stealing from her bank account while she was in a coma. No one has been charged in the case.
Bobbi Kristina Brown was an aspiring singer who began performing with her mother as early as 1999, singing duets of "My Love is Your Love." In 2003 they recorded another duet of "Little Drummer Boy" for a holiday album.
Her father is a Grammy Award winner who started his career as frontman for the R&B group New Edition.
Houston and Bobby Brown both struggled with substance abuse and divorced when their daughter was 14. Houston described their 15-year marriage, which ended in 2007, as drug- and alcohol-fueled.
The couple's tempestuous relationship and often erratic behavior was chronicled in the short-lived television series, "Being Bobby Brown."
Bobbi Kristina Brown was hospitalized twice with anxiety after her mother's death.
In 2012 she starred on Lifetime's reality TV show, "The Houstons: On Our Own," in which Houston's family struggled to recover from the famous singer's death. The same year Bobbi Kristina Brown guest-starred on "For Better or Worse," a television series about a married couple. —Reuters

Manchester United beat Barcelona in friendly
Manchester United kept up the positive momentum of their pre-season tour with a 3-1 victory over Barcelona in the International Champions Cup on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) in Santa Clara, California.
Wayne Rooney put the English club on top early by heading home a goal in the 10th minute before Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj each added second-half goals.
Manchester United, who beat Champions League winners Barcelona in the title game of 2009 and 2011, have enjoyed a successful U.S. tour with victories over Club America of Mexico and Major League Soccer club San Jose Earthquakes.
Barcelona, playing without standouts Lionel Messi and Neymar, along with Claudio Bravo, Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves, made it an exciting match but failed to cash in on a few prime scoring chances.
Luis Suarez twice hit the post on first-half shots for Barcelona and had another goal overturned by an offside call in the second half.
Manchester United seized a 2-0 lead in the second half when Lingard scored in the 65th minute.
Barcelona struck back in the 89th minute with a goal by Rafinha, but United answered with their third moments later, courtesy of Jacuzzi.
Barcelona were coming off a win against MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy on Tuesday and have one more match in the United States before they return to Europe. - Reuters

Hulk Hogan sacked as taped racial slur surfaces
WASHINGTON, United States - The American professional wrestling legend known as Hulk Hogan has been dumped by World Wrestling Entertainment, the association said Friday.
News reports said this was because Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, uses a racial slur in a 2008 conversation that was taped and has just now come to light.
"WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan). WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide," the association said.
It did not give a reason for its break with Hogan.
Hogan, who is 61 and known for his perpetual suntan and flamboyant bandana, is no longer viewable in the "Superstar" category on the WWE website's video archive.
He is also no longer listed as a judge on the WWE-released reality show "Tough Enough", and WWE has stopped selling Hulk Hogan merchandise.
US press reports say Hogan, in a sex tape made in 2008, part of which has surfaced online, uses the "N-word" in a conversation about his daughter's dating a black man.
Hogan reacted Friday on Twitter, writing cryptically: "In the storm I release control, God and his Universe will sail me where he wants me to be, one love. HH"
Later he apologized in comments to People magazine.
"Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation. It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it," Hogan said. — Agence France-Presse

Suspect in Louisiana theater rampage had history of mental illness
A 59-year-old man who had been committed to a hospital for psychiatric care was identified by authorities on Friday as the gunman who fatally shot two people in a rampage at a crowded movie theater in central Louisiana before turning the gun on himself as police closed in.
The suspected gunman, John R. Houser, who had a history of mental illness and railed against the US government online, opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun about 20 minutes into the comedy film "Trainwreck," sending panicked theatergoers ducking behind seats and running for the exits. One woman pulled the fire alarm.
"This is a normal movie theater in a normal part of a normal town. This is Anywhere, USA," said Republican Governor Bobby Jindal, who went to the crime scene in the city of Lafayette to meet with law enforcement and victims. "This just shows these senseless acts of violence can literally happen anywhere."
Before purchasing a ticket for the 7 p.m. show, Houser parked his blue Lincoln Continental near the theater's emergency exit in what police said appeared to be preparations for a quick getaway. He had switched its license plates and stashed the keys on top of a tire. Disguises including glasses and women's wigs were later uncovered in a local motel room where he was staying.
"It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and escaping," Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said, who described Houser as an unemployed "drifter" from Phenix City, Alabama.
Houser never made it back to his car. As police swarmed the Grand 16 Theater, located along main thoroughfare in Lafayette, he reloaded his .40 caliber handgun, re-entered the theater and killed himself, police said.
Police said they did not know why the suspect launched the attack in Lafayette, roughly 55 miles (90 km) southwest of the state capital Baton Rouge.
"Certainly it exists out there that we may not find a motive but that's not our goal right now," Colonel Mike Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police told reporters.
Three years after Aurora
The shooting was the latest in a series of mass killings in the United States, including the fatal shooting of five US servicemen in Tennessee, and the massacre of nine African Americans at a South Carolina church in recent weeks.
The latest act of apparently random gun violence came almost three years to the day after 12 people were killed at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado.
It is likely to heat up a festering political debate in the United States over access to weapons and the right to bear arms, protected under the Second Amendment of the US Constitution.
President Barack Obama had told the BBC in an interview aired on Thursday before the shooting that his biggest frustration was the failure to pass "common-sense gun safety laws."
Authorities said seven were wounded in the Lafayette rampage, three of them critically.
The two victims were identified as Mayci Breaux, 21, from Franklin, Louisiana, and Jillian Johnson, 33, from Lafayette. Breaux was about to begin studies at Lafayette General Hospital to become an x-ray technician. Johnson owned a Lafayette gift shop.
Amanda Rabalais, 19, a college student who frequently shopped at Johnson's store, said she was stunned by the shooting.
"I don't think I can go inside a movie theater for quite some time now. It just really shook my feeling about safety," she said.
Two of the wounded victims were teachers, Jindal said, one of whom told him that she survived the attack because her friend rolled on top of her as bullets rang out. That teacher then managed to pull a fire alarm in the theater, he said.
History of mental illness
Houser had a volatile relationship with his family, who said he had a history of mental illness. A political conservative who joined the Tea Party, Houser was described as a "gadfly" who voiced his views on talk radio and ran for local political office.
In April 2008, he was ordered not to contact his wife, daughter and other relatives after they filed a request for a protective order against him in Carroll County, Georgia.
In the request, Houser's estranged wife, Kellie Houser, said she feared for his "volatile mental state" after he threatened to stop the wedding of his daughter and her boyfriend, according to court records. She said her husband was on daily medications for manic-depression and bipolar disorder at the time.
Earlier, Houser was involuntary committed to a hospital for psychiatric care, according to court documents. His family was concerned he could be a danger to himself and others, according to the petition.
Houser's wife filed for divorce in March after they separated in 2012 following 29 years of marriage, court records show. According to the clerk of court's office the divorce had not been finalized.
Craft, the police chief, said records indicated that Houser, who is white, had no arrests in the last 10 to 15 years, but previously had an arson and a misdemeanor arrest, possibly involving the sale of alcohol to a minor.
He was denied a concealed carry permit in Russell County, Alabama in 2006 because of a report or domestic violence filed against him by his wife in 2005 and a previous arrest, authorities said.
A LinkedIn page that appears to have belonged to Houser describes him as an entrepreneur with a specialty in investment management. He helped run two bars in Georgia from the late 1970s to 2000, the page says. His education included a law degree from Faulkner University, a Christian school in Montgomery, Alabama, and an undergraduate degree in accounting from Columbus State University in Georgia.
Houser was a member of the conservative Tea Party, according to Tea Party Nation.com, and he was a guest host on a now-defunct political commentary show.
A frequent commenter on PoliticalForum.com, a messaging board covering social and political topics, Houser wrote about 200 posts on President Obama, taxes and how "the US is about to fall," using the name Rusty Houser.
In response to a thread in May 2013 about the fall of the United States, Houser wrote: "Truth carries with it an understanding of death. Rather than live without it, I will take death."
Bobby Peters, a former mayor of Columbus, Georgia, said Houser was a local activist who came to council meetings and had hosted a talk show where he interviewed elected officials. Columbus is across the state line from Phenix City, Alabama.
"I'm not going to say that he gave any signs that he was going to do some kind of act like this. Not at all. He was just very erratic," Peters said. — Reuters
Tips On How To Plan For Your Closing Costs
When you know that you are going to apply for a mortgage, it is best to
begin saving for the closing costs. On average, closing costs cost
anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000. These costs vary by location and other
matters that also affect the rate. Fortunately, closing costs are
usually the only upfront cash payment that usually needs to be made when
a mortgage loan is cleared.
What Are Closing Costs For?
Closing costs are the fees due in order to close out a real estate transaction. When the title is transferred over to the soon-to-be-new home owner, the closing costs are then due. Closing costs are usually determined between the real estate agents whom are capable of wheeling and dealing at the cost in which you will ultimately be required to pay.
Considering that closing costs are almost never optional, it is best to assume that you will need to pay anywhere from 2% to 5% of the cost of the mortgage loan in closing fees. In some cases, you may be able to have the closing costs wrapped into the mortgage, but this isn’t common.
Closing costs cover lender’s fees, service costs, escrow, and settlement services, among other small fees. Basically it covers the costs of services for anyone involved with the transaction. It’s important that you prepare yourself as necessary to pay these costs as soon as they are due.
Begin saving money for the closing costs as soon as you learn that you were accepted by the mortgage lender. This should give you plenty of time to save up the thousands of dollars needed, unless you are in a hurry to make a deal on a property. Either way, save a little money out of every paycheck to cover the closing costs when they arise.
Other than the closing costs being due at the end of the transaction, you may also need a hefty down payment to put on a property. Make sure you consider all of these fees associated with a mortgage loan and save whatever it is that you need. It’s always safe to save about 25% to 30% of the mortgage loan to pay out in cash fees for closing costs and the down payment combined. Saving that much should be more than enough to cover all the costs.

Chris Brown: ‘Please let us leave!’
Chris Brown posted another video with the caption “Obama!!!”
This time, the American singer is pleading to be allowed to leave the Philippines.
In the Instagram video he posted earlier today, July 24, Chris was seen kneeling and acting as if he's praying: “Please! Please let us leave! Please! Please!”
This video has since been deleted from Chris's Instagram account.
Chris arrived in the country last July 21 for his solo concert held on the same night at MOA Arena.
However, three days after, he is still here.
The singer is barred from leaving the country as he is still waiting for a clearance from the Department of Justice (DOJ).
This is in connection to the lookout bulletin order against him after Maligaya Development Corporation (MDC) sent a letter to the DOJ to ask for assistance.
MDC filed a criminal complaint against Chris for not showing up at Iglesia Ni Cristo's New Year's Eve party last December 31, 2014.
The company claims that they have fully paid the talent fee of the 26-year-old American singer.
MDC wants a successful prosection of the criminal complaint against Chris.

Djokovic, Williams head elite fields for US Open
Wimbledon champions and world number ones Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams head the field for the men's and women's events at this year's U.S. Open, the United States Tennis Association announced on Wednesday.
Djokovic, who has reached the U.S. Open final five times and won the title in 2011, tops an elite list that includes other former champions in Roger Federer (2004-08), Rafa Nadal (2010, 2013), Andy Murray (2012) and last year's winner Marin Cilic.
Serbian Djokovic will be aiming to land his third grand slam crown this year, having triumphed at the Australian Open in February before beating Federer in four sets in the Wimbledon final earlier this month.
The U.S. Open will be played from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Serena Williams will command much of the spotlight over that fortnight as she bids to become only the third woman to win the "calendar year" grand slam in the professional era.
Aged 33, she outclassed Spaniard Garbine Muguruza 6-4 6-4 in the Wimbledon final earlier this month.
It was a sixth Wimbledon title and a 21st grand slam crown for Williams and, unless she suffers a dip in form, it seems unlikely anyone can stop her march into the history books at Flushing Meadows where she is unbeaten since 2011.
She won her sixth U.S. Open last year, and has since landed the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles this season.
Joining Williams will be Russian world number two Maria Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion; third-ranked Simona Halep of Romania and fourth-ranked Czech Petra Kvitova, the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion. — Reuters

Here's how to sync Microsoft Office with Google Drive
Thanks to this Google plugin, the Microsoft Office productivity suite can now sync directly with Drive, Google's cloud-based storage service.
"Building on this open approach, we recently made it possible to launch your favorite desktop applications directly from Google Drive. And today we’re taking it a step further by bringing Google Drive to Microsoft Office. Using the new Google Drive plug-in, people using Office for Windows can now open their Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents stored in Drive, then save any changes back to Drive once they’re done," technical program manager Darrell Kuhn said in a blog post.
"With this plug-in, you can use the apps you’re already comfortable with, while benefitting from the security and convenience of Google Drive," he added.
Click here to install Google Drive for Office.
Kuhn said this means one working on a document, spreadsheet or presentation on his or her computer can also save that file to Google Drive, directly from the Office apps.
"This is especially useful for sharing files with teams, or for accessing your files across devices," he said.
A separate report on The Verge said Microsoft already made Office run on the desktop, web, and mobile platforms.
It also teamed up with Dropbox to give users storage options other than Microsoft's OneDrive.
"If for some reason you're a Drive loyalist who also loves using Office, this tool just might make your life easier; it should be available to install today," it said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

Mortgage Refinance Myths
Qualifying for refinancing is difficult. It isn’t necessarily easy for
anyone, even with a good credit history. Nevertheless, refinancing your
mortgage can be done, as long as you are eligible. By knowing the facts
and avoiding the myths, you can better your chances of qualifying for a
mortgage refinance.
The Biggest Myths
If you are unsure if refinancing is a right decision for you, consult with an expert. In most cases, refinancing is a wise choice. Nevertheless, it isn’t for everyone and you will want to learn more about what refinancing entails before you decide to apply. Refinancing could very well lower your interest rate and make it easier for you to pay off your home quicker.
Very rarely will you have to worry about paying any out of pocket expenses for refinancing. Nor will you have to be concerned with prolonging the amount of time it will take to pay off your refinancing loan. The purpose of refinancing is to shorten that timeframe and to focus on paying off the home even sooner with a lower interest rate. Prior to applying for refinancing, make sure you pay attention to the average percentage rates during the time. Always apply when the rates are low.
The benefits of applying for a refinancing loan greatly outweigh the cons. You could end up saving a lot of money as long as you play your cards right. Remember, you don’t have to go through the same banker to refinance although it may be the quickest way considering the bank will know your ability to pay the payments on time. For more information on how you can save through refinancing, contact Northwood Mortgage today.

Zach Johnson wins British Open in playoff
ST ANDREWS, Scotland - American Zach Johnson claimed the second major victory of his career when he beat Australian Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa in a four-hole playoff at the British Open on Monday.
Johnson, who won the US Masters in 2007, was one under par for the extra holes. Oosthuizen was level par and Leishman two over.
The 39-year-old wiped tears from his eyes before hugging his wife as he walked off the 18th green to pick up the coveted Claret Jug and a first prize of 1.15 million pounds ($1.79 million).
One of the first to congratulate Johnson was fellow American Jordan Spieth who failed by one stroke to make the playoff after a day of fluctuating fortunes.
Spieth, 21, bidding to become the first player since compatriot Ben Hogan in 1953 to land the opening three majors of the year, finished with a three-under 69 for 274, 14 under.
Johnson (66), Leishman (66) and Oosthuizen (69) ended the regulation 72 holes on 15 under.
Irish amateur Paul Dunne, who went into the final round in a tie for the lead, slumped to a closing 78 and had to make do with a share for 30th position on 282.
It was only the second time the championship had finished on a Monday after heavy rain and strong winds caused havoc earlier in the tournament. — Reuters

Soccer legend Pelé undergoes back surgery in latest health scare
SAO PAULO - Brazilian soccer legend Pelé has undergone back surgery, a close aide told Reuters on Saturday, the latest in a series of recent health problems afflicting the 74-year-old former player.
Pelé, whose given name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has been at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo for the past "two or three days" and underwent a procedure to decompress a nerve root in his spine, his personal assistant José Fornos Rodrigues said. He did not elaborate further.
According to GloboNews news channel, Pelé is expected to leave the hospital on Monday. Hospital staff were not immediately available to comment.
This is the third time Pelé has been hospitalized since November. He spent two weeks at the Einstein facility with kidney problems, and in May he underwent prostate surgery in the same hospital.
With more than 1,280 career goals and an unequaled three World Cup titles during his playing career, Pele is considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all-time. — Reuters

California brush fire forces evacuation of more than 300 campers
Dozens of children were among more than 300 people evacuated from campgrounds early on Saturday as firefighters battled brush fires burning in Southern California's drought-parched foothills, fire officials said.
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened from the fire that broke out at about 9:30 p.m. along the Angeles Crest Highway. It has charred some 100 acres northwest of San Bernardino, according to an online US Forest Service post.
At least five campgrounds near the fire were evacuated, sending 300 campers, including 130 children with special needs, to a nearby high school, the Los Angeles Fire Department tweeted.
The highway remained closed on Saturday night near the fire, which was 35 percent contained at its perimeter of about 200 acres, fire officials said online.
Another brush fire on Friday overran Interstate 15, north of San Bernardino, destroying four structures and torching 20 vehicles. One injury was reported from that blaze, which forced about 60 drivers to abandon their cars and scramble to safety.
Helped by rain, firefighters had contained 45 percent of that blaze, which is approximately 3,500 acres in size, by Saturday night. — Reuters

On behalf of all those who bring to life the saga of the Crawley family and those who serve them, thank you for recognizing our show for a fifth consecutive season."
Chris Miller and Phil Lord, directors and executive producers of best directing nominee "The Last Man on Earth," starring and written by comedy actor nominee Will Forte:
"We are so happy for our dear friend Will Forte. His genius is to make us laugh and think and care all at the same time. We feel really lucky to receive this directing nomination, but even luckier to work with such a talented group of actors, writers, editors and filmmakers as we did on "Last Man," including our fellow nominee editor Stacey Schroeder. They made us look really good, and they made it one of the most enjoyable filmmaking experiences of our lives. We're filling up the margarita pool to celebrate."

Fox's 'Deadpool' shines among 'X-Men' star power for Comic-Con
SAN DIEGO - The largest gathering of celebrity superheroes came together on stage with Marvel creator Stan Lee at San Diego's Comic-Con, as Fox harnessed star power for its films, "Fantastic Four," "Deadpool" and "X-Men."
Fox presented its panel of upcoming movies at the annual gathering of pop culture and film fans, and upped the ante with its own Marvel roster of mutant heroes and anti-heroes, with Lee, the creator of the comic books, making a cameo appearance.
Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Oscar Isaac led the fifteen main cast members of next year's "X-Men: Apocalypse," each hinting at where their respective characters are in the new film.
Director Bryan Singer said "Apocalypse" was set in the 1980s, 10 years after the events of 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past." While the world is more accepting of mutants, they themselves are still coming to terms with their powers and intentions, and deal with new evils.
Jackman, who has played Wolverine in every "X-Men" movie since 2000, said he'll be hanging up the claws after 2017's "Wolverine" sequel, hinting at the possibility of seeing an older version of his character in the final film.
While "X-Men: Apocalypse" boasted the most star power, it was the R-rated "Deadpool" that earned the standing ovation.
Fans were treated to the first proper look at the foul-mouthed anti-hero Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, in a trailer filled with edgy humor that traces his transition from an ailing young man into a disfigured but invincible, rage-filled, vigilante.
Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
Unlike all the superhero films to grace the box office in the past two decades, "Deadpool," a lesser known and more polarizing hero, is the first time Marvel gets R-rated on the big screen.
"I think this character inhabits a space in the comic book universe that no other canon does," said Reynolds.
"It's a miracle that a studio let us make 'Deadpool,' let alone a R-rated 'Deadpool.'"
Fox also showcased "Fantastic Four," out next month, as stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell discussed delving into the origin stories of the foursome who acquire strange abilities.
Fans were also shown exclusive footage of upcoming gothic drama "Victor Frankenstein" and dystopian young adult adventure "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials." — Reuters

Yellen says economy on track, defends Fed 'transparency'
WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Wednesday the U.S. central bank remains on track to raise interest rates this year, with labor markets expected to steadily improve and turmoil abroad unlikely to throw the U.S. economy off track.
"If the economy evolves as we expect, economic conditions likely would make it appropriate at some point this year to raise the federal funds rate," Yellen said in testimony prepared for the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, affirming the view of a central bank prepared to gradually raise rates after more than six years at a near-zero level.
Labor markets are "not yet consistent with maximum employment," she said. "Greece remains difficult. And China continues to grapple with the challenges posed by high debt, weak property markets, and volatile financial conditions."
Still, "looking forward, prospects are favorable for further improvement in the U.S. labor market and the economy more broadly."
Her written statement to the committee is to be followed by a hearing later Wednesday morning. The statement largely tracked her recent public comments, as well as the most recent policy statement by the Fed's policy-setting committee.
She did, however, include an explicit defense of the Fed's "transparency and accountability," detailing the central bank's flow of information to financial markets and its press conference and audit schedules as evidence it does not need further congressional oversight.
She will likely be questioned on that very point from members of the Republican-led House committee. House members were critical of the Fed at her previous appearance before them in February. In the intervening months some lawmakers have expressed frustration over the fact that the Fed has not released all of the material Congress has requested as part of an investigation of the possible leak of information from the central bank to an economic consulting company in 2012.
Yellen has said the Fed had declined to send the information because a separate Justice Department probe is ongoing.
Yellen's statement was submitted to the committee along with a lengthier report from the Fed board on the state of the economy and financial markets.
That report included more detail on what the United States faces as it tries to go its own way in a weakened world economy. The expectation that the Fed will diverge from Europe, Japan and other central banks and begin raising rates has pushed up the value of the dollar, and driven down exports and U.S. growth, making the Fed's outlook less certain, the report said.
The report also noted concerns about a possible liquidity crisis if bond markets become stressed, an issue some investors and market analysts have cited as a potential source of future trouble. The staff report said that while there is some evidence bond markets are not as "deep" or liquid as they used to be, there is not convincing evidence of "notable deteriorations." — Reuters

Wala naman akong talent or kahit ano."
"Nagulat din yung family ko na biglang ganito. Nakakagulat talaga kasi secret ultimate dream ko 'yon, and nandito na ako. I'm getting there. Living the dream,” dagdag pa ng dalaga.
-- FRJ, GMA News

‘Minions’ dominates with $115.2-M debut
LOS ANGELES - "Minions" ruled the weekend box office, racking up a massive $115.2 million in North America, for the second biggest animated film opening in history.
The Universal and Illumination Entertainment spin-off to "Despicable Me" just missed the domestic record set by "Shrek the Third's" $121.6 million kickoff in 2007, while continuing animation maestro Chris Meledandri's hot streak at the multiplexes. What makes Meledandri so valuable to studios is that he keeps budgets low. "Minions" cost $74 million to produce, a modest number considering that Pixar and DreamWorks Animation routinely spend north of $100 million on their animated features.
"I'm not sure the public is mindful of what films cost, they're more concerned with how they resonate," said Nick Carpou, Universal's domestic distribution chief. "Chris is able to produce films that speak to families, to children, to people everywhere."
The studio left nothing to chance when it came to reminding moviegoers why the loved the nattering, mischievous, highlighter-hued critters. Universal partnered with the likes of Snapchat, McDonald's, and Amazon to deliver nearly $600 million in publicity and promotions, according to a recent article by Bloomberg. The titular characters were ubiquitous popping up on everything from Twinkies to Chiquita bananas.
Carpou said he was made aware of the Minions' cultural currency this weekend while on an outing to a mall. A store featuring plush toys prominently displayed the "Despicable Me" characters.
"They're everywhere, those yellow guys," he said. "In a way they exist in the culture without even having a film attached to them."
The opening weekend crowd for "Minions" was 59% female, 55% under the age of 25, and 60% comprised of families.
"With anything that opens to over $100 million, you breach all demographics," said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. "The Minions are the stars of the 'Despicable Me' franchise...kids love them, teens love them, and adults love them."
"Minions" also enjoyed a sprawling rollout, debuting in 4,301 theaters. In recent months, there's been a lot of celebrating taking place on the Universal lot. The studio is the leader in market share thanks to hits like "Pitch Perfect 2" and "Fifty Shades of Grey," and has two films that have crossed $1 billion at the global box office with "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World."
"Minions" was such a behemoth that two newcomers, "Self/Less" and "The Gallows," risked getting washed away. Of them, "The Gallows" fared better, picking up $10 million, across 2,720 locations. The Warner Bros. found footage chiller cost less than $2 million to make, so it could be profitable. Entertainment 360 and Blumhouse Productions backed the picture about a high school play gone terribly, terribly wrong...and not in that teenagers putting on "The Crucible" kind of way.
Warner Bros. executives say the film is a modestly priced single, but was an important showcase for writers and directors Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing.
"We're cultivating young filmmakers and giving them a chance to grow and prosper," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president. "These are really sharp guys, who have a long career in front of them."
Focus Features' "Self/Less" was not so fortunate, picking up roughly $5.4 million from 1,953 locations. The science-fiction thriller about a radical medical procedure is the latest film fumble for Ryan Reynolds, who is still laboring to get out from under the massive flops that were "The Green Lantern" and "R.I.P.D." The good news for the actor is that a trailer for "Deadpool," his upcoming R-rated comic book adaptation, rocked the Comic-Con crowd. Box office redemption may be nigh.
"Self/Less" was produced for $26 million, but the blow is softened in part by foreign pre-sales that limited Focus' and co-backer Endgame's financial exposure.
"Minions" also took a chunk out of some of the turbo-charged blockbusters still kicking around cinemas. "Jurassic World" slid 54% to $18.1 million, bringing its Stateside haul to $590.6 million, while "Inside Out" dipped 43% to $17.1 million, pushing its domestic total to $283.6 million.
Overall ticket sales were robust, improving nearly 40% over the year-ago period when "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" kicked off with $72.6 million. —Reuters

Euro zone summit aims to keep Greece in single currency
BRUSSELS - Euro zone leaders will fight to the finish to keep near-bankrupt Greece in the single currency on Sunday after the European Union's chairman canceled a planned summit of all 28 EU leaders that would have been needed in case of a "Grexit".
But leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be required to enact key legislation in parliament from Monday to start restoring the broken trust of his partners in the 19-nation currency union before they will agree to open negotiations on a third bailout, ministers said.
European Council President Donald Tusk announced that he had called off the tentatively planned meeting of EU heads of state and government, saying the euro zone summit to start at 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) would "last until we conclude talks on Greece".
Eurogroup finance ministers resumed a meeting suspended after nine hours of acrimonious debate on Greece's application for another three-year loan on the basis of reform proposals Tsipras accepted after long resisting.
A draft statement seen by Reuters said Greece must pass laws to change its value added tax and pension systems, reform bankruptcy rules and strengthen the independence of its statistics office before bailout talks can even start.
"The Eurogroup... came to the conclusion that there is not yet the basis to start the negotiations on a new program," the draft said.
"Only subsequent to legal implementation of the above mentioned measures can negotiations on the memorandum of understanding commence, subject to national procedures having been completed," it said, in a reference to authorization by national parliaments in countries such as Germany.
The draft said Greece needed 7 billion euros by July 20, when it must make a crucial bond redemption to the European Central Bank, and a total of 12 billion euros by mid-August when another ECB payment falls due.
It did not say how those needs would be met. A source said the statement would be handed over to the euro zone leaders and might not be issued before they meet.
Several hardline countries voiced support for a German government paper that recommended Greece take a five-year "time-out" from the euro zone unless it accepted and implemented swiftly much tougher conditions, notably by locking state assets to be privatized in an independent trust to pay down debt.
Argument became so heated that Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem decided to adjourn at midnight and resume talks at 11 a.m. to allow tempers to cool.
"The main obstacle to moving forward is a lack of trust," Italian Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan told reporters.
The ministers agreed in principle to seek ways to ease Greece's debt burden by extending loan maturities and other steps stopping short of a "haircut" or writedown, provided Athens first implements reforms.
Greeks see humiliation
European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, who is in charge of the euro in the EU executive, doused Greek hopes of an immediate agreement on Sunday to start loan negotiations.
"It's utterly unlikely the European Commission will get a mandate to start formal negotiations as regards a third program or ESM program today," he said, referring to the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund.
Greece's new finance minister, Euclid Tsakalotos, was silent in public but the reaction among some lawmakers in Tsipras' radical leftist Syriza party, still smarting from having to swallow austerity measures they had opposed, was furious.
"What is at play here is an attempt to humiliate Greece and Greeks, or to overthrow the Tsipras government," Dimitrios Papadimoulis, a Syriza member of the European Parliament, told Mega TV.
With banks shuttered for two weeks, cash withdrawals rationed and the economy on the edge of an abyss, some Greeks in the streets of Athens vented their anger on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.
"The only thing that I care about is not being humiliated by Schaeuble and the rest of theme" said Panagiotis Trikokglou, a 44-year-old private sector worker.
Greece has already had two bailouts worth 240 billion euros from euro zone countries and the International Monetary Fund, but its economy has shrunk by a quarter since the crisis began, unemployment has soared above 25 percent and one in two young people is out of work.
Athens defaulted on an IMF loan repayment last month and faces state bankruptcy if it cannot make the bond redemption on July 20, which would likely force the ECB to cut emergency funding for Greek banks.
German sources said Schaeuble, Merkel and Social Democratic Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel had agreed on a division of labor to force Greece to accept tougher conditions or leave the currency area temporarily.
However economists said the idea of a temporary exit was likely to mean ejecting Athens from the European monetary union in the end.
Paul De Grauwe, a Belgian economist at the London School of Economics, compared it to a couple having a trial separation.
"Temporary Grexit is like temporary divorce. Most if not all end up being permanent," he said in a Twitter message.
Holger Schmieding, chief economist of Berenberg Bank, was even more categorical, saying: "Temporary Grexit is Grexit."
Analyst Nicolaus Heinen of Deutsche Bank told Reuters that billions of euros withdrawn by Greeks before capital controls were imposed would crowd out any new currency in a cash economy similar to Cuba or Lebanon, where the dollar is king.
There would be political conflict over a date for Athens' return to the euro zone, and "tension between Greece and the rest of Europe would be bound to grow if Greece was sent to stand outside the classroom like a naughty schoolboy," Heinen said.
Merkel is under mounting pressure from her own conservatives not to give any more money to Greece, but she has so far said she wants to hold the euro zone together, and that will require a third program for Athens.
She requires the assent of the German parliament to agree to the opening of loan negotiations, so diplomats expect her to commit to calling a special session of the Bundstag to give her that mandate if Greece enacts prior reforms this week
The United States has added its voice to calls for a deal this weekend, concerned at the geopolitical consequences if Greece were to be cut loose and become a failed state in the fragile southern Balkans, adjoining the Middle East.
"No one wants to see a North Korea in southeastern Europe," a European Commission official said. — Reuters

FIFA bans Chuck Blazer from soccer for life
ZURICH/BERN - Former FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer, a key figure in a U.S. investigation into corruption by soccer officials, on Thursday was banned for life from soccer activities by the sport's governing body.
Blazer, who in 2013 secretly pleaded guilty in the United States to bribery and financial offences, was found by FIFA's ethics committee to have breached rules on loyalty, confidentiality, duty of disclosure, conflicts of interest, offering and accepting gifts and bribery and corruption.
"Mr Blazer committed many and various acts of misconduct continuously and repeatedly during his time as an official in different high-ranking and influential positions at FIFA and CONCACAF (which governs the sport in North and Central America and the Caribbean)," the ethics committee said in statement.
"In his positions as a soccer official, he was a key player in schemes involving the offer, acceptance, payment and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments, bribes and kickbacks as well as other money-making schemes."
U.S.-based lawyers for Blazer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Through a 2013 U.S. plea agreement, Blazer become a cooperating witness in the U.S. probe, which has engulfed FIFA and pressured the governing body's president, Sepp Blatter, to step down.
Blazer agreed to provide prosecutors information, turn over any documents he possessed related to the probe, participate in undercover activities and testify at trial.
The 70-year-old, who has a curly white beard and has in the past tipped the scales at more than 400 lb, is now in hospital with rectal cancer, type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease.
Blazer was on FIFA's executive committee which awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively, a process which is under investigation by Swiss authorities.
Over the past years, as a critical spotlight has been increasingly turned on the organization and the awarding of World Cups, FIFA has handed down bans to a number of officials.
Among them, Asian soccer chief Mohamed Bin Hammam was banned for life for ethics breaches.
FIFA said on Monday Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who led the teams which inspected bids for 2018 and 2022, was banned from all soccer for seven years. He said on Twitter he would appeal.
FIFA has said it is cooperating with the investigations. Qatar and Russia deny wrongdoing and say they are preparing to hold the tournaments on schedule. — Reuters

Sony Xperia Z5 to have fingerprint scanner?
A fingerprint scanner could be the biggest come-on for Sony's upcoming new Xperia flagship handset, a tech site reported.
Technodify.com said the upcoming phone, dubbed the Xperia Z5, is to sport Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM.
But the site, citing leaked information, said the phone will have a fingerprint recognition system.
"While we currently don’t know where Sony is planning to implement this fingerprint scanner... we are expecting to see it on the home button. Along with that, the phone will follow the same old OmniBalance design with 4,500 man battery Inside," it said.
The Xperia Z5 is also expected to feature the latest Sony Exmor RS IMX230 based CMOS sensor with 4K video recording support, HDR and 21 million pixels, it added.
Citing rumors, it said Sony might bring Xperia Z5 to Japan in September. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News

Trade deficit widens; weakness abroad fuels export drop
WASHINGTON - The U.S. trade deficit widened in May, fueled by a drop in exports that could heighten concerns over weak overseas demand and a strong U.S. dollar.
The Commerce Department reported on Tuesday that the trade gap grew $1.2 billion to $41.9 billion. That was less than the $42.6 billion deficit expected by analysts and suggests Wall Street economists may slightly raise their forecasts for economic growth in the second quarter.
But the drop in exports in May highlights a change in the tenor of economic growth since the United States exited the 2007-2009 recession. The economy relied more on export-led industries such as manufacturing early in the recovery, but growth is increasingly coming from domestic drivers like construction and services as the economic cycle matures.
Exports fell $1.5 billion, or 0.8 percent, to $188.6 billion in May, led by a drop in overseas sales of U.S.-made capital goods. Imports fell by about $300 million, or 0.1 percent, to $230.5 billion.
Prices for U.S. Treasuries rose after the data, while U.S. stock index futures were unchanged. The dollar gained against a basket of currencies.
Since the middle of last year when the Federal Reserve made clear it was planning to raise interest rates to keep the economy from eventually overheating, the dollar has strengthened, making U.S. exports less competitive.
Since that time, Europe's economy also has been on shaky ground and the European Central Bank has eased monetary policy, causing the euro to weaken against the dollar. European policymakers are currently fighting a debt crisis in Greece that threatens to rip apart the continent's monetary union.
Exports of goods to Germany fell 6.0 percent in May from the prior month, according to non-seasonally adjusted figures. Sales fell 4.2 percent to France, 2.1 percent to Mexico and 3.0 percent to Japan.
The U.S. economy contracted at a 0.2 percent annual rate in the first quarter, hit by bad weather, a strong dollar, spending cuts in the energy sector and disruptions at West Coast ports.
Other economic data, including figures on hiring and consumer spending, have pointed to a rebound during the second quarter, and a firming domestic economy could encourage the Fed to raise rates later this year.
In May, the drop in imports came as purchases from China rose 9.5 percent. That could fan further criticism from U.S. manufacturers that Chinese firms are using a cheap currency and unfair subsidies to gain market share in America.
At the same time, U.S. net imports of oil fell to $5.8 billion in May, the lowest level since 2002. — Reuters

Women's World Cup: Williams penalty gives England third place
Fara Williams struck an extra-time winner from the penalty spot as England defeated Germany 1-0 to claim third place in the Women's World Cup on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time).
The Lionesses gained some consolation for their heartbreaking loss to Japan in the semi-final as they produced a gritty display to beat the twice world champions for the first time.
A fiercely competitive game, scoreless after 90 minutes, was decided three minutes into the second period of extra time when England sub Lianne Sanderson was pulled down in the box by Tabea Kemme and Williams coolly slotted home.
The third place finish, behind United States and Japan who meet in the final on Sunday, is the best by an England team at a women's World Cup.
It also marks the best finish by an England team of either gender since the men's team won the World Cup in 1966.
"These players are just incredible. Now it's time for a massive celebration," said England coach Mark Sampson.
Germany, who had won 18 of the previous 20 meetings between the teams, started strongly and forced England keeper Karen Bardsley into action early with a powerful first minute header from forward Lena Peterman.
An injury time own goal from Japan had doomed England in the semi-final and there was almost more self-inflicted damage when a header from Jo Potter flew past Bardsley only for skipper Steph Houghton to produce a brilliant clearance on the line.
Bardsley was outstanding again in the 53rd minute to keep out a superb volley from Sara Dabritz and then Kemme shot just wide after a powerful run in from the left flank.
England finished strongly, though, camping deep in the German half and keeper Nadine Angerer did well to save bravely at the feet of substitute Eniola Aluko.
Germany dominated the first period of extra-time but the Lionesses found a second wind and the decisive penalty was reward for their pressure.
Germany coach Silvia Neid, who will stand down next year, said she had no complaints about the penalty or the result.
"We fought, we worked very well and had chances but if you don't score you aren't going to win. The penalty was justified, we were very naive. It is sad but it is reality but England won and deserved to win," she said. - Reuters
