Neymar, Costa star in Brazil lineup in Rio Olympics
Strikers Neymar and Douglas Costa head a young Brazil Olympic football squad looking to bounce back from humiliation in the Copa America Centenario, stand-in coach Rogerio Micale announced Wednesday.
On home soil in next month’s Games in Rio two years after their devastating 7-1 semi-final loss to Germany, Brazil are bidding to add Olympic gold to their three silver medals, two bronze and five World Cup titles.
Barcelona’s Neymar, Costa of Bayern Munich and goalkeeper Fernando Prass, 37, are the only players aged over 23 in the squad.
It is Prass’s first international call-up. Micale hailed his “leadership profile” and the “excellent season” he has had as captain of Palmeiras.
The Spanish champions allowed Neymar, 24, to play in the Olympics but not this month’s Copa America, in which Brazil were knocked out at the group stage.
“Neymar is different. He is one of the best players in the world. Any national team would want to have a player of his profile,” Micale told a news conference.
“He will mean a lot for the team. I hope he will be able to help the younger players.”
The Copa humiliation got coach Dunga fired. Corinthians boss Tite was named to replace him, but Micale will lead the team at the Olympics before Tite takes over.
Micale selected Paris Saint Germain defender Marquinhos but chose to drop his PSG teammate Thiago Silva.
Brazil face South Africa, Iraq and Denmark in the group stage at the Olympics, which run from August 5 to 21.
Brazil squad for 2016 Olympics:
Goalkeepers: Fernando Prass (Palmeiras), Uilson (Atletico Mineiro)
Defenders: Luan (Vasco), Rodrigo Caio (Sao Paulo), Marquinhos (Paris SG/FRA), Douglas Santos (Atletico Mineiro), William (Internacional), Zeca (Santos)
Midfielders: Rafinha (Barcelona/ESP), Rodrigo Dourado (Internacional), Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk/UKR), Thiago Maia (Santos), Felipe Anderson (Lazio/ITA)
Strikers: Neymar (Barcelona/ESP), Douglas Costa (Bayern Munich/GER), Gabriel Barbosa (Santos), Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras), Luan (Gremio)

Google teaches computer vision new tricks
With the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference in Las Vegas on the way, Google has announced several of its accomplishments.
The company’s researchers have, among others, successfully taught computer vision systems to detect specific objects in an image. Tech Crunch reports that Google’s system, developed in collaboration with Stanford, is able to track objects and determine which one is the most relevant. It can also point out objects with potential relevance as a scenario progresses.
Another accomplishment is a system that detects objects with continuously moving parts or “articulated object classes.” By identifying moving parts and position relative to the greater whole, limbs can be highlighted frame by frame. Such a system could greatly benefit surveillance systems if fully developed.
Finally, the company has developed a method for computer vision systems to not only identify different objects in an image but also describe them in detail.
The computer will be able to look through a number of provided descriptors while analyzing a picture and apply said descriptors or a combination of them onto certain objects that it detects, such as a gray laptop or a red and black watch on a white table.
While we humans can do this instinctively with our collection of life experiences and memories, computers still find this action quite difficult.
All the systems mentioned use the deep learning system. Alfred Bayle

Death toll up to 41 in Istanbul airport attack
ISTANBUL — The Istanbul Governor’s Office says 41 people have been killed in the deadly suicide bombing attack in Istanbul’s Ataturk airport blamed on the Islamic State group.
A statement on the governor’s website says 37 of the victims have been identified, including 10 foreign nationals and three people with dual citizenship. More than 230 people were wounded in the attack, but 109 have been discharged from hospitals.
A Turkish official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government protocol says the death toll does not include three suicide bombers who died.
The Palestinian ambassador to Turkey says a Palestinian woman was among the dead. Separately, the Turkish official said five Saudis, two Iraqis, one Tunisian, an Uzbek, a Chinese, an Iranian, a Ukrainian and a Jordanian national were killed.

Meet Wall-E’s little cousin Cozmo
There have been a number of robotic toys in the market, the most recent of which is the Star Wars-inspired BB8 droid. However, a company called Anki attempts to up the ante with the quirky mini-bot Cozmo.
Cozmo is the the result of combining artificial intelligence, computer vision technology, and robotic movements by former Pixar animators. This little robot comes equipped with dozens of expressions that can be seen on its small display as well as its movements. It also communicates through a collection of beeps and other bot-like noises. Needless to say, when Cozmo gets annoyed, its owner will know in no uncertain terms, reports Engadget.
Artificial intelligence for Cozmo comes in the way that it recognizes and remembers faces, as well as the quirks of the people he often interacts with, just like a dog that remembers that when its owner raises a hand, it means it’s feeding time.
The batteries on Cozmo only lasts for about two hours but the little bot is aware enough to recharge itself on the roll-on charger. Charging typically takes only 10 minutes.
Anki wanted to emphasize the imperfections of Cozmo to make it more relatable and endearing to its human owners. In many ways Cozmo is like Wall-E from the movie of the same name.
Cozmo can be ordered at Anki’s website for $180 and shipping will begin in October. Anki, however, is offering a pre-order discount for early adopters. Alfred Bayle

Oil prices up in Asia but tremors over Brexit remain
SINGAPORE — World oil prices rebounded in Asia Tuesday on bargain hunting but tremors from Britain’s shock vote last week to leave the European Union continue to weigh on sentiment.
Financial markets are still reeling from Brexit’s fallout as investors sell riskier assets and flock to safe bets amid global economic uncertainty.
Asian stock markets resumed their losses early Tuesday, extending another sharp sell-off in Europe and New York.
At around 0330 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in August was up 64 cents, or 1.38 percent, to $46.97 and Brent crude for August gained 60 cents, or 1.27 percent, to $47.76 a barrel.
Both contracts closed lower on Monday.
“The turmoil in the financial markets, triggered by the UK referendum results, is keeping the pressure on oil prices, which look set to clock a monthly loss in June,” said IG Markets Singapore analyst Bernard Aw.
“The lack of guidance from the UK government and the prospects of a leadership struggle continued to dampen investors’ appetite, and this should persist through the week,” he told AFP.
British Prime Minister David Cameron quit in the wake of the vote and the race is on to find his successor as party leader who would take over as prime minister.
Former London mayor Boris Johnson and Interior Minister Theresa May are considered to be the front-runners in the leadership race.
Policy makers in Europe are trying to calm global markets but analysts said uncertainty remains.
“Apart from economic considerations, concerns are that the Brexit vote could encourage other EU countries to seek their own referendums, including Netherlands, France, Spain and Greece,” DBS Bank said in a note.
It said “this could potentially revisit the EU breakup fears that plagued the region” a few years back.
A strengthening US currency — considered a safe investment in times of turmoil — will likely continue to dampen demand for dollar-priced oil which would become more expensive for holders of weaker units, Aw added.

Singapore Airlines plane catches fire during emergency landing
SINGAPORE, Singapore — A Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane caught fire Monday while making an emergency landing at Changi Airport after turning back from a flight to Milan following an engine oil warning message, the carrier said.
No one was injured aboard the Boeing 777-300ER, but one passenger described those moments as a “so-close to death” experience.
SIA said in a statement Flight SQ368 was en route from Singapore to Milan when an engine oil warning message forced it to turn back to the city-state.
“The aircraft’s right engine caught fire after the aircraft touched down at Changi Airport at around 6:50am,” it said.
“The fire was put out by airport emergency services and there were no injuries to the 222 passengers and 19 crew on board.
“Passengers disembarked through stairs and were transported to the terminal building by bus.”
The airline said passengers would be transferred to another aircraft to depart for Milan later in the day and that it would “be cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations”.
One passenger posted a harrowing account and a video of the engine fire on Facebook.
The 49-second video clip, apparently shot from a window seat, showed tongues of flame and smoke engulfing the right engine before they were put out.
“I just escaped death!!!!” Facebook user Lee Bee Yee said in a post that accompanied the video clip.
“Our Singapore Airline plane was leaking oil 3 hours flying off and the plane had to turned back. After reaching Changi Airport, as the plane was landing, the engine burst into flames!!!! Huge fire was burning!” Lee wrote.
An SIA spokesperson however told AFP that the plane was one hour and 45 minutes into the flight when it turned back.
“It was a heart wrenching 5 mins! Waiting for the fire engine and fire fighters to put out the fire! They shot foam and water into the fire and eventually it was put out! We were so close to death!!” Lee added.
“I thank God I am alive! I going home to hug my kids.”

WIMBLEDON 2016: Djokovic seeks next step toward Golden Slam
Novak Djokovic has accomplished so much in his career — and, indeed, already this year.
He owns 12 Grand Slam singles titles, a total eclipsed by only three men in the long history of tennis. He has won four consecutive major tournaments, something only two other men ever did. He leads the tour in wins (44-3 record) and titles (six) in 2016.
Now, with Wimbledon starting Monday, there is something more for Djokovic to pursue, something never achieved by a man and only once by a woman: a Golden Slam, consisting of winning all four major singles titles, plus an Olympic singles gold medal, in one season. As it is, Djokovic is halfway to a true Grand Slam, collecting championships on the hard courts of the Australian Open in January, then the red clay of the French Open earlier this month.
Among men, only Don Budge in 1938, and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969, managed to win all four Grand Slam tournaments within a calendar year (none of those were Summer Games years and, anyway, tennis was not part of the Olympics in those days).
“There’s going to be a lot of pressure on him,” Laver said about Djokovic, adding: “For me, I think it’s very possible he can pull it off.”
When he won his first French Open title this month to become the first man since Jim Courier in 1992 to even get halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam, Djokovic certainly did not try to play down the possibility of equaling Laver’s achievement.
“Well, I don’t want to sound arrogant,” Djokovic said after extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 28 matches, “but I really think everything is achievable in life.”
Why shouldn’t he feel that way?
At 29, he is probably at his peak, as close to unbeatable as there is these days, possessing the best return of serve in the game, an unparalleled ability to contort his body and track down opponents’ apparent winners while going from defense to offense in a blink, and an improving serve.
And from match to match, surface to surface, Djokovic rarely wavers.
“People are starting to respect him more and more,” said seven-time major champion John McEnroe, part of ESPN’s broadcast team at the All England Club, “(and) to see the astronomical level of consistency he’s had, incredible success week in and week out.”
Djokovic has participated in the past six Grand Slam finals, a run surpassed only by Roger Federer in the Open era.
Djokovic also is gaining on another, more revered, mark: Federer’s 17 Grand Slam titles. Next on the all-time list are Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras, with 14 apiece.
“He’s there, for sure — one of the best now,” said Marian Vajda, who co-coaches Djokovic alongside Boris Becker. “Hard to say who’s the greatest. But according to the Grand Slams, he is getting close to Federer and Nadal.”
At Wimbledon, Djokovic won’t see Nadal, out with an injured left wrist. Federer is finally, at 34, showing signs of age, including missing the French Open to end a record streak of 65 consecutive majors. This is also the first time since 2000 that Federer heads to the All England Club without having won any ATP title all season.
At this point, the top-ranked Djokovic’s most serious challenger has to be No. 2 Andy Murray, the man he beat in the finals at both the Australian Open and French Open this year. Murray has reached 10 Grand Slam finals, winning only two, but both victories did come against Djokovic.
Murray also has reunited with Ivan Lendl, his coach when he won an Olympic gold medal (at the All England Club) and the U.S. Open in 2012, and Wimbledon a year later.
Still, Djokovic has the momentum and ability to take aim at a truly historic season, including the chance to win his first Olympic gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August.
Steffi Graf collected the only Golden Slam in 1988, and the world saw in 2015 just how much pressure and attention Serena Williams dealt with as she came within two match wins of the first calendar-year Grand Slam since then.
Williams hasn’t won a major since getting her fourth in a row at Wimbledon last year to raise her career count to 21, one short of Graf’s Open-era record.
“Something is holding her back,” said 18-time major champion Chris Evert, now an ESPN analyst, “and it could be nerves.”

Britain’s EU workers gripped by fear, confusion, heartache
LONDON — A tsunami of uncertainty has engulfed Anna Woydyla, a Polish restaurant worker in London, since Britain voted to leave the European Union.
Would her two teenage children, who grew up in the United Kingdom, still qualify for loans to study at British universities? Would she and her husband, after 11 years of working here, have to sell the home they just bought? Leave their jobs? Leave their new country? Try to apply for citizenship?
The 41-year-old is among hundreds of thousands of European Union workers in Britain who are fearful and confused over what happens next as their adoptive country begins the long process of unwinding its many ties to continental Europe.
“If it were just me, I could even return to Poland,” a visibly tense Woydyla said as she stocked a bar in an Italian restaurant in London’s Camden district. “But my kids are more English than Polish. They don’t even want to go to Poland for their holidays anymore. They even speak to each other in English.”
An entire class of cosmopolitan entrepreneurs, workers, students and strivers who have made the U.K. their home since Britain opened its borders to its EU neighbors now see their futures in limbo. The immigrants changed the face of Britain, turning London’s Kensington neighborhood into a suburb of Paris, changing sleepy English towns like Boston into Baltic enclaves, filling supermarket shelves across the nation with Polish lager and Wiejska sausage.
“I personally cannot tell what’s going to change for me,” said Andrea Cordaro, a 21-year-old Italian student who compared the shock of hearing the referendum’s result to the punch-in-the-gut feeling of flunking an exam. “I’ll just have to keep my head up and hope for the best.”
Laurence Borel, a 36-year-old digital marketing consultant from France, isn’t waiting to find out what’s coming next. She asked for her British passport in May after more than 15 years living in the country.
“I’ll bet a lot of people are applying,” she said, explaining that she’d been mulling the idea of a passport for years but the referendum prompted her to act.
“I don’t want to go back to France,” she said. “My life is here.”
At workplaces and schools across the country, managers have sent out emails to worried foreign staffers and students, assuring them that — for now — nothing has changed.
“The formal process for leaving the European Union will take at least two years,” Oxford University said in one such statement. “Our staff and students can be assured that in the short term, we anticipate no disruption to employment or study.”
Over the long term though, the lives of the estimated 3 million EU citizens living in Britain may change in ways big and small. A survey commissioned by the Financial Times found that if Britain’s current immigration rules were applied to EU nationals, the overwhelming majority would lose their jobs and be forced to leave the country — catastrophic news for Spanish barristas, Romanian strawberry pickers, German investment bankers and the industries that rely on them.
The biggest impact may be on the Poles, the largest group of foreign EU workers in the U.K. An estimated 850,000 people from Poland are now in the U.K., seeking wages and opportunities far beyond what they could ever expect in their ex-communist homeland, a flow so dramatic that Polish is now England’s second-most-spoken language.
The fate of the Poles in Britain is such an important domestic issue in Poland that President Andrzej Duda vowed after the British referendum that Polish leaders will “do everything to keep the rights unchanged” in upcoming negotiations with British leaders.
“I trust that the British government will appreciate the contribution the Poles are bringing into the development of the British Islands, into their social and cultural life,” Duda said.
Under British law, EU immigrants who have resided in the U.K. for more than five years can apply for permanent residency. In practice, however, few EU citizens have bothered as their passports already allow them to travel freely and easily access education, health care, pensions and other services in Britain.
The Polish Institute of International Affairs, a Warsaw-based think tank, has estimated that still leaves up to 400,000 Poles who arrived in Britain after 2012. Though the path forward is still unclear, it’s possible that they — along with hundreds of thousands more from elsewhere in Europe — may have to apply for work visas and, if rejected, have to leave the country.
Aware of the EU workers’ anxiety, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who had backed the failed “remain” side, issued a special message Friday to the nearly one million European citizens living in London alone.
“As a city, we are grateful for the enormous contribution you make, and that will not change as a result of this referendum,” he said. “You are very welcome here.”
To be sure, not all European workers in Britain are panicking or fearful.
“I feel good. Leaving the EU is a good idea,” said Gabriel Ionut, a 24-year-old from Bucharest, Romania, who works as a traffic marshal at a construction site in London. He has worked in the U.K. for four years and, with a residency permit, is confident about his chances of staying.
He says he fully understands native British concerns that their island has been forced to absorb too many immigrants in recent years, with too little control over who can come in due to the EU rules ensuring the free movement of people and labor.
“Now they will have more control over allowing in only the really good people,” he said. “And they will also be able stop more refugees from the Middle East. I am afraid there could be terrorists with them.”
Another Romanian construction worker said he was mostly confused. Iosif Achim, a 32-year-old from Satu Mare, Romania, has been in Britain for six years but never bothered to apply for a residency permit.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen now,” said Achim. “But in my opinion this is going to be bad.”
The concern was mirrored across the Channel by the estimated 1.2 million U.K. citizens living in Europe.
The referendum “shouldn’t affect me too much. But it could,” said Herman Martin, a British composer who has lived in Brussels for the past 24 years. Overall, he said, the British vote to leave the EU would be a disaster for both parties.
“I find it quite disturbing,” he said.
Everyone with foreign ties appears shaken.
“We’re all in shock and deeply saddened,” said Christine Ullmann, a German who works in digital marketing in London, including on the “Hug a Brit” campaign that pleaded with the British to remain in the EU. Ullmann said she cried on the train Friday morning.
Borel, the French consultant, agreed that emotions were still raw.
“I love London. I love the English. I’m heartbroken,” she said.

Bernie Worrell, masterful P-Funk keyboardist, dead at 72
NEW YORK — Bernie Worrell, the ingenious “Wizard of Woo” whose amazing array of keyboard sounds and textures helped define the Parliament-Funkadelic musical empire and influenced performers of funk, rock, hip-hop and other genres, has died.
Worrell, who announced in early 2016 that he had stage-four lung cancer, died Friday at age 72. He died at his home in Everson, Washington, according to his wife, Judie Worrell.
Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, George Clinton’s dual projects of Parliament and Funkadelic and their various spinoffs built upon the sounds of James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone among others and turned out some of the most complex, spaced out, political, cartoonish and, of course, danceable music of the era, elevating the funk groove to a world view.
With a core group featuring Worrell, guitarist Eddie Hazel and bassist Bootsy Collins, P-Funk maintained an exhausting and dazzling pace of recordings, from the hit singles “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)” and “Flash Light” to such albums as “One Nation Under a Groove” and “Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome.” And the studio music was just a starting point for the live shows, costumed spectaculars of wide-brimmed hats, war paint, dashikis, military gear or perhaps a white sheet with only a fig leaf underneath.
Worrell was among the first musicians to use a Moog synthesizer, and his mastery brought comparisons to Jimi Hendrix’s innovations on guitar. Anything seemed possible when he was on keyboards, conjuring squiggles, squirts, stutters and hiccups on Parliament’s “Flash Light” that sounded like funk as if conceived by Martians. On Funkadelic’s “Atmosphere,” his chatty organ prelude, like a mash-up of Bach and “The Munsters,” set up some of Clinton’s more unprintable lyrics.
Worrell’s contributions as a keyboardist, writer and arranger didn’t bring him a lot of money, the source of much legal action and fierce criticism of Clinton, but fellow musicians paid attention. He played with Talking Heads for much of the 1980s and was featured in their acclaimed concert documentary “Stop Making Sense.” Worrell also contributed to albums by Keith Richards, Yoko Ono, Nona Hendryx, Manu Dibango and the Pretenders. In 2015, he was a member of Meryl Streep’s backing group in the movie “Ricki and the Flash.”
“Kindness comes off that man like stardust,” Streep said during a 2016 benefit concert for Worrell at Manhattan’s Webster Hall.
Meanwhile, he toured frequently on his own and released such solo records as “Funk of Ages,” and “Blacktronic Science” and most recently “Retrospectives.” His other credits ranged from co-writing the soundtrack for the 1994 film “Car 54, Where are You?”, based on the old TV sitcom, to his brief membership in Paul Shaffer’s band on “Late Show with David Letterman.”
In 1997, Worrell, Clinton and more than a dozen other P-Funk members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“This is a huge loss,” Clinton said. “The world of music will never be the same. Bernie’s influence and contribution — not just to funk, but also rock and hip-hop — will forever be felt.”
A native of Long Branch, New Jersey, Worrell was a musician virtually from the time he could speak, trained to play piano at age 3 and giving public performances by age 10 with the Washington Symphony Orchestra. While at the New England Conservatory, in Boston, he became interested in synthesizers through listening to a group not otherwise known for its contributions to funk, the British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
“I loved the ‘Tarkus’ album,” he told the website MusicRadar in 2013. “Keith (Emerson) was the first guy I heard using the Moog. I liked the sound of that album and the things he was doing with the instrument.”
Worrell met Clinton in the early 1970s and performed with him off and on through the following decades even as P-Funk had imploded by 1980 amid reports of drug abuse and unpaid royalties. He would remember P-Funk’s prime as stressful, “circuslike,” but worth it once the music began.
“When the band wasn’t getting into arguments and fooling around, it was OK,” he told MusicRadar. “There were family things that came up. A group that size, and everybody’s living together, it’s just like family. After they’d go through their antics and settle down with whatever was going on, I’d come in and crack the whip. ‘All right, let’s do ‘Flash Light.'”TVJ

Two dead in California fires, thousands evacuated
LOS ANGELES—At least two people have died in a fire in central California that has destroyed 100 structures and prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency, officials said Friday.
The fast-moving blaze that erupted late Thursday afternoon in the Lake Isabella area of Kern County had spread to about 30,000 acres (121 square kilometers) by Friday afternoon and was five percent contained, authorities said
The Kern County Fire Department confirmed the two fatalities in a message on Twitter but provided no further details.
It said firefighters were dealing with strong winds that were fanning the so-called Erskine fire — located three hours north of Los Angeles.
Governor Jerry Brown issued a state of emergency for the region, allowing aid to be deployed more quickly.
“Anne and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to everyone impacted by this destructive blaze,” the governor said in a statement, referring to his wife.
“We join all Californians in expressing our gratitude to the courageous firefighters, emergency personnel and volunteers working tirelessly throughout Kern County to help residents and extinguish this fire.”
Local media said 80 homes had been destroyed by the flames, which quickly went out of control and that number was likely to grow.
Thousands of residents have also been evacuated.
“This fire … it exploded. It went from 2 to thousands of acres within hours,” county fire captain Tyler Townsend told reporters.
Fire officials said some 800 firefighters were battling the blaze and several hundred more were on the way.
“The mountainous terrain, five years of drought and wind gusts …drove a fire over 11 miles in 13 hours,” said county fire Chief Brian Marshall, quoted by KTLA.
“Our firefighters … have been engaged in a firefight of epic proportions, trying to save every structure possible.”
Authorities closed several highways and evacuated two schools and a retirement home in the agricultural and oil region after the blaze started due to unknown causes.
California is experiencing a record five-year drought and trees and brush are at risk of igniting from the smallest spark.
Temperatures that climbed to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) earlier this week increased the risk of fire.
More than 14 large fires are currently raging in the United States, mostly in the southwest, where a record heat wave left at least five dead last Sunday.

If you love Wolfgang, help Basti
It was 1993. I was a high school freshman, and my father had decided that I was ready to watch my first rock gig.
Considering that the last show I watched was MC Hammer’s concert at Araneta Coliseum, Club Dredd along Edsa was unfamiliar, albeit intriguing, territory.
Installing egg trays on the walls and the ceiling for acoustic purposes was a foreign concept; long-haired scruffy men in Top 40 shirts were once part of a surreal, imagined universe. My only idea of rock’n’roll at the time was whatever my dad would play on the car stereo. I had no clue whatsoever of who was going to play that night, but if the crowd was any indication, I was pretty sure they wouldn’t be playing bubblegum pop.
I half expected my ears to bleed from the noise, but they didn’t.
On the contrary, they were charmed and I, seduced into the local band scene. That gig made me realize that heavy, pounding rock music could be beautiful (yes, I actually said that), and that good music doesn’t always come from mainstream radio.
Fast-forward to 1999. I attended the NU Rock Awards for the first time and saw the same band that taught me to appreciate homegrown independent musicians win the Listener’s Choice Award. The band’s frontman, Basti Artadi, bagged the Vocalist of The Year award for the third time in a row.
By then I knew that Wolfgang had established a name in the Pinoy rock scene; won Album and Artist of the Year awards for 1996’s “Semenelin,” with Vocalist, Bassist and Drummer of the Year awards for Artadi, Mon Legaspi and Wolf Gemora respectively; earned platinum recognition for “Wurm,” which was released the year after; and had just released its fourth album, “Serve in Silence.”
The three albums were a major record deal, an acknowledgement from the music industry that the band had indeed crossed over from being obscure to pretty damn famous.
While the lyrical content of Wolfgang’s songs and the arrangements were much heavier than that of other then rising bands, this distinct feature may actually have been Wolfgang’s edge over the competition. Wolfgang will never be as amusing to listen to as, say, Parokya ni Edgar, and its songs will never be as easy to relate to as those of the Eraserheads, but one can’t deny that no other band from that era—aside from Razorback, perhaps—came close to being as hard-hitting Pinoy rock as this one.
Undeniable talent
With the meteoric rise of Wolfgang’s popularity came the recognition of each individual band member. Not surprisingly, Artadi, as the frontman, was one of the most recognized, and not merely for his quintessential rockstar good looks, but more importantly, for his undeniable talent.
His singing of the first few lines of “Mata ng Diyos” almost ceremoniously, and the effect his powerful, distinct voice brings to the song as it goes uptempo towards the chorus, is nothing short of climactic.
Artadi has ventured into other projects. “Brain Salad” was a recording project, a collaboration with Razorback’s Dave Aguirre, Brian Velasco and Louie Talan. The first live performance happened only this year at the Jack Daniels Indie Fest.
A local production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” saw Artadi in the title role. He returns to the stage this month in 9 Works Theatrical’s installation of “American Idiot,” where he plays the iniquitous St. Jimmy.
Given that the cast is headed by Artadi and other prominent figures in the local music scene, “American Idiot” is expected to draw rock and theater fans alike.
On stage at the Jack Daniels Indie Fest and during a one-on-one interview in the press conference for “American Idiot,” Artadi hinted that he wouldn’t be performing on stage much longer. At the Indie Fest, there was sadness in his eyes when he admitted that soon, he wouldn’t be playing in a band anymore.
While it may or may not have been connected to his previous claims, his Facebook post on Tuesday came as a shock to many. The post talked about his medical condition. Artadi has a benign facial nerve tumor that affects facial movement and requires a procedure to address it, albeit temporarily.
To help collect funds for his procedure and to financially support his family while he cannot perform, he is selling shirts through Jeepney Rockstop Philippines.
The shirt shows an image of his face, but it’s not there for vanity. “Its just a picture of my face which I thought would be a good symbol for me getting back the lost symmetry, so no, it’s not because I’m full of myself. I thank God every day because I’m lucky that this thing still left me with the ability to sing; what would have really sucked is if it took 100 percent of the motion from the get go,” he shares on the Facebook post.
To order the shirt and help Basti, visit https://www.facebook.com/Jeepneyrockstop/ or text 09156212189. Jeepney Rockstop will deliver nationwide and abroad. A Go Fund Me account has also been set up by his sister, Sabrina Artadi. Donations can be made through this link: https://www.gofundme.com/welovebastiartadi.

Taylor Swift saves Dave Grohl from embarrassment at McCartney’s gig
Pop icon Taylor Swift is not only good in moving on after a romantic breakup, but also in saving someone from embarrassment.
Rock band “Foo Fighters” lead Dave Grohl narrated an encounter with Swift and “The Beatles” legend Paul McCartney while he played a solo performance on Thursday night at Cannes Lions, an international advertising festival.
Grohl told the audience that he had attended a party at McCartney’s house, and when McCartney positioned his fingers in his piano, he invited Grohl to jam with him.
Grohl can’t play the piano and McCartney had a left-handed guitar. There was another hindrance, too: Grohl had smoked weed during the party.
Out of nowhere, Swift stood up and “got Grohl’s back” as she started hitting the piano keys with Grohl trying to jam along on one of McCartney’s guitars, according to Hollywood News site US Weekly.
“She was playing this beautiful thing on the piano, I looked at my wife and, I know this [fucking] song,” he narrated. Soon, he realized that Swift was playing Foo Fighter’s “Best of You,” one of Grohl’s famous hits.
“That blew me into outer space,” he said, and praised the Grammy-award singer, whom he calls a “Batman.”
Grohl complimented Swift’s fantastic vocal skills before he played an acoustic version of the track during Thursday’s festival. Gianna Francesca Catolico

British vote on leaving the EU rocks world financial markets
SEOUL, South Korea — World financial markets were rocked Friday by Britain’s unprecedented vote to leave the European Union, with stock markets and oil prices crashing and the pound hitting its lowest level in three decades.
The uncharted, unexpected path of a European Union without Britain sparked the sell-offs, with more jitters expected as global markets try to digest the shock result.
Tokyo stocks plummeted about 8 percent, their biggest fall since 2008, while South Korea’s Kospi tumbled about 3 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 futures tanked 8.3 percent.
Crude oil prices and US futures also took a big hit. The British pound plummeted more than 10 percent in six hours while the yen surged about 3 percent to the US dollar as investors seeking safety snapped up the Japanese currency.
By early afternoon in Asia, a tally by the BBC showed Britain had voted to leave the 28-nation European Union by about a 52 percent to 48 percent margin.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 plunged 8.3 percent to 14,897.32 while South Korea’s Kospi sank 3.4 percent to 1,918.70. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index tumbled 4.8 percent to 19,866.20 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 3.4 percent to 5,012.20. Stocks in Shanghai, Taiwan, Sydney and Southeast Asian countries were sharply lower.
US futures took a dive. Dow futures fell 3.4 percent and S&P futures nosedived 5 percent.
“Financial markets throughout the night have been chaotic to say the least and this may continue as the day progresses,” said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda in London. “All eyes will now be on central banks around the world to see how they respond to these market developments, particularly the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.”
On Thursday, Wall Street finished with rallies as pre-poll forecasts showed that Britain would keep the EU membership. Asian stock markets opened the day higher but the mood turned sour as results started to show that the “leave” vote would win. As the results increasingly pointed to the EU exit, investors dumped stocks and other risky assets.
The results sent the pound on a wild ride. It rose to its highest point for the year of $1.50 before tumbling more than 10 percent to a low of $1.3303, its lowest level since 1985.
In other currencies, the dollar fell to 101.51 yen from 104.80 yen while the euro weakened to $1.097 from $1.132.
Benchmark US crude plummeted 6.4 percent, or $3.17, to $46.94 per barrel in New York. Brent Crude, the benchmark for international oil price, fell 6.1 percent, or $3.11, to $47.80 per barrel in London.

Pound, Asia markets collapse as Britain quits EU
HONG KONG—The pound collapsed to a 31-year low and currency, equity and oil markets went into freefall Friday as projections showed Britain has voted to leave the European Union.
Sterling crashed more than nine percent to $1.3305, its weakest level since 1985, while the greenback itself slumped below 100 yen for the first time in two-and-a-half years as traders fled to safety.
In the weeks leading up to Thursday’s historic vote, there had been widespread warnings that a vote to leave would cause another rout across global markets that would wipe trillions off valuations, just months after a painful China-fuelled sell-off.
And as results came in, the doomsday scenario began to unfold as the BBC and other broadcasters called a win for “leave”.
The pound had earlier topped $1.50 following predictions the “remain” group would win but as the Brexit camp posted victories around the country, traders stampeded to put in sell orders.
The dollar slumped briefly to 99.02 yen, the first time it has gone below 100 yen since November 2013, before edging back up slightly. The Japanese unit is considered a safe bet in times of uncertainty and turmoil.
Japan’s Finance Minister Taro Aso will hold an emergency news briefing Friday. He has previously said Japan would closely watch the dollar-yen rate and act accordingly if the yen became too strong, indicating the government could intervene in currency markets.
A flight to safety also saw higher-yielding and emerging market currencies slump, with the Australian dollar down 3.2 percent, South Korea’s won diving 2.4 percent, Malaysia’s ringgit down 2.3 percent and the Indonesian rupiah shedding 1.7 percent.
There were also heavy losses for India’s rupee, the Canadian dollar and the Singapore dollar.
‘Independence day’
The outcome has upturned expectations, which had been for a tight race narrowly won by the “remain”, while bookmakers had said there was a 90 percent chance of staying in.
But as the shock results rolled in, equity markets went into meltdown.
Tokyo plunged more than eight percent in the afternoon, Sydney shed 3.7 percent and Seoul was 3.5 percent off. Mumbai lost three percent and Shanghai sank 1.4 percent by lunch, while Taipei, Wellington, Manila and Jakarta all saw sharp losses.
Hong Kong tumbled 4.7 percent by the break with British banking giants HSBC and Standard Chartered both plunging more than 10 percent.
In the early hours in Britain, Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-Europe UK Independence Party, declared victory, saying it was the country’s “independence day”.
The prospect of a severe hit to the global economy also hammered oil prices, with both main contracts slumping more than six percent.
“We are seeing oil swept up in the general market nervousness to the vote,” Ric Spooner, a chief analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, told Bloomberg News.
“Corrections are likely to be fairly shallow in oil because prices will be supported by the fact a balanced market is firmly on the horizon.”

Ikea recalls safety gates for fear of causing injury to kids
STOCKHOLM — Swedish furniture retailer Ikea is recalling children’s safety gates because the locking mechanism is unreliable and may result in injury to children.
The company urges customers with any model of Patrull safety gate to immediately stop using them and return them to an Ikea store for a full refund without proof of purchase.
Ikea said Thursday it has received reports that the gates have opened unexpectedly, causing children to fall down stairs, with medical attention needed in some cases.
Ikea, a leading global home furnishings group, has more than 300 stores in 27 countries. It said the company has zero tolerance regarding child safety and that the faulty gates had opened despite “approved tests to applicable standards.” TVJ

McDonalds, Coke team up in new singing sweepstakes promo
OAK BROOK, Illinois — Two iconic brands are teaming up to get Americans singing their favorite summer songs for the chance to win a VIP experience at “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in LA or one of hundreds of $250 StubHub gift codes.
McDonald’s and Coca-Cola are introducing a new customer sweepstakes “Sip. Share. Win!” beginning June 21 through August 1, 2016.
“Sip. Share. Win!” marks the second time recently that McDonald’s has launched a new sweepstakes aimed squarely at the passions of its customers. In November 2015, the company teamed up with the NFL for Game Time Gold, a sweepstakes that allowed NFL fans to win $500,000 or a Trip to Super Bowl 50. Both promotions join MONOPOLY, one of the most popular sweepstakes offered at McDonald’s.
Customers will be the real stars in the new promotion when they join the fun. Through Shazam, one of the world’s most popular apps for connecting artists and fans, participants will be able to use their mobile phones to record themselves singing their own unique karaoke video using one of the specially marked Coke cups available at McDonald’s restaurants during the event.
They’ll choose from one of 10 popular song lyrics by top artists from a variety of genres and generations, which are featured on the promotional cups such as “Love You Like a Love Song,” “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” “I’ll Rise Up,” “We Are Family” and more. Other celebrities such as Alex Morgan, Jamie McMurray, David Choi, Leslie Grace and Chrisette Michele, will share their “Sip. Share. Win!” videos and photos.
Participants can also enter to win by posting a selfie on Twitter or Instagram featuring themselves with one of the specially marked McDonald’s Coke cups using the #SipShareWin #Sweepstakes hashtags.
“The Sip. Share. Win! promotion is all about creating the opportunity for fun and enjoyable moments with our customers this summer and we’re looking forward to seeing the wide variety of entry videos and pictures our customers share as they get in on the excitement,” said Joel Yashinsky, vice president of Brand Marketing for McDonald’s USA. “We are thrilled to be one of the first brands to work with CBS to provide the grand prize VIP experience at ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ and we anticipate enthusiasm from our customers over the opportunity to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.”
One lucky winner will be randomly selected to win a grand prize VIP experience for themselves and a guest at “The Late Late Show with James Corden” including an expenses paid trip to L.A.,
VIP tickets to the show, a year of live music from StubHub and more. Additionally, hundreds of $250 individual StubHub gift codes will be given out during the six week promotion. As one of the world’s largest ticket marketplaces, StubHub connects fans with their favorite artists and shows, allowing them to choose the music experience that will mean the most to them.
As a way to show appreciation for restaurant employees, one lucky employee and their guest will also be randomly selected to win the VIP experience at “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Employees from both company-owned and independently franchised locations will be eligible to participate in the promotion.
Also, during last night’s “Selena Gomez Carpool Karaoke,” Gomez and Corden visited a local McDonald’s drive thru.
Last month, The Coca-Cola Company launched its Share a Coke® and a Song campaign to inspire music fans to celebrate a moment, a memory, a mood or feeling, bringing people together through the universal love of music. Creating this partnership takes the idea even further by providing another opportunity for people to express themselves through music while enjoying ice-cold Coca-Cola and McDonald’s.
“‘The Late Late Show’s’ partnership with McDonald’s and Coca-Cola reflects CBS’s commitment to working with our clients to create new, organic and innovative opportunities,” said Jo Ann Ross, President, Network Sales, CBS Television Network. “The ‘Sip. Share. Win!’ promotion will extend to ‘The Late Late Show’s’ presence in-restaurant and on packaging across more than 14,000 McDonald’s nationwide, and conclude with a VIP experience at ‘The Late Late Show’ in Los Angeles for the sweepstakes’ grand prize winners. We are excited to be working with these two great brands on this special promotion.”

Euro 2016: Ronaldo hails ‘insane’ draw as Portugal progress
Man-of-the-match Cristiano Ronaldo called Portugal’s 3-3 draw against Hungary “insane” as his side scraped into the last 16 of Euro 2016, thanks to his two record-breaking second-half goals.
Ronaldo opened his account in style with a deft backheel flick on 50 minutes before a bullet header 12 minutes later to twice equalize at the Stade de Lyon.
The goals made the 31-year-old the first player to score in four European Championships.
The result made Hungary unlikely Group F winners in their first international tournament for three decades.
Portugal squeezed through as one of the best third-place finishers but now face a tough last 16 match against Croatia in Lens on Saturday.
“It was an insane match,” said Ronaldo as Portugal equalized three times in sweltering conditions.
“We had to chase down the match, it was very hot, but the main goal was to qualify.
“Of course, we wanted to win and qualify in first place, but the main thing is we’re through.”
Following their draws with Iceland and Austria, Portugal’s captain showed signs he was feeling the pressure, throwing a TV reporter’s microphone into a lake on the morning of the game in Lyon.
But he delivered when it mattered as Portugal equalized three times in a match that was not for the faint-hearted.
The Real Madrid ace set another record by making his 17th appearance at Euro tournaments.
“These are just more records, but like I always say that comes naturally,” he said.
“I can’t say I’m not happy, these are good records, but the priority was to make it through to the 16.”
Ronaldo rated his side’s chances as “50/50″ in the last 16 as a talented Croatia side shocked defending champions Spain to reach the knock-out phase on Tuesday.
“We made it and now we face a very good team, but the odds are 50/50,” he said.
“Croatia are a tough team, with good players. Not every team manages to beat Spain.
“We respect them, but we know our strength and we’ll look them in the eye when we face them.”
Ronaldo praised his side for fighting back each time they were facing elimination.
“The bottom line was to qualify, we thought we’d done it in second place, but Iceland scored late on and we finished third,” he said,
“We attacked, Hungary attacked.
“The team was in dire straits, three times we were about to go home, but we came back each time.”

Apple gives preview of unencrypted iOS 10
In a shocking move, Apple has released the preview for the iOS 10 to developers with its kernel completely unencrypted.
In a statement, an Apple spokesperson said the kernel was left open to better optimize performance without compromising security since the kernel cache does not have any user information.
The kernel is basically responsible for things like how apps access the device’s hardware and security protocols. This unencrypted preview will allow developers to examine the kernel’s code in full detail to find security flaws. In turn, it will help Apple to patch up security holes faster.
A report from 9to5Mac states that Apple’s recent battle with the FBI is one of the reasons for opening the kernel to developers.
While it may be too early to predict the ramifications of Apple’s decision, it does make sense that more eyes will help to find security issues and fix them up faster. Alfred Bayle

Spotify reaches ‘100 million users’ milestone
Music streaming service Spotify has confirmed that its monthly active user base has sailed past the 100 million mark for the first time.
A report by Business Insider said the Swedish app’s user base has pushed into new markets and attained an outstanding statistical growth from 75 million to 100 million, despite facing stiff competition from the likes of Apple Music.
In a statement on Monday (Tuesday in Manila), Spotify officials said they were adding some 1.8 million users to their service every month and that 30% of these were paying subscribers.
Overall, the service now boasts over 30 million new subscribers, while the remaining 70 million users still tune into their free subscription.
Apart from the recent surge in user popularity, the company has also overtaken fellow European startup Skype as the continent’s most promising and highly valued application.
Regardless of its newfound success, the company is reportedly still not making much profit, as evidenced by a 10-percent revenue drop in 2015.
These losses can be chiefly attributed to the payments it makes to music labels, artists and music rights holders, the report said.
Spotify has the music-streaming industry’s biggest paid subscriber base, but the vast majority still tune in free with commercial breaks.
The company, which was founded in 2006, is still paying 80 percent of its revenue and has not yet shown a profit as it spends to grow internationally. Khristian Ibarrola

Asian shares mostly up as investors await more Brexit polls

KEEPING SCORE: Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1 percent to 16,002.60 while China’s Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.4 percent to 2,891.03. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was up 0.3 percent to 20,730.25. ANALYST VIEWPOINT: “We still have three polls on UK referendum before the vote, and another shift back to ‘Brexit’ will see risk appetite disappear in a jiffy,” said Bernard Aw, IG market strategist, as the polls showed “remain” with a slight lead over “leave” sentiment. “Despite a positive performance in the overnight markets, Asia will continue to trade cautiously.”
WALL STREET: U.S. stocks rose Tuesday as investors were relieved to hear Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen say the Fed would remain cautious in raising interest rates. For the second day in a row, stocks traded higher and bond prices fell as investors felt a bit surer that Britain will stay in the EU. The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 24.86 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,829.73. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 5.65 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,088.90. Fastfood chain invents meal box that charges phones
Have a sumptuous meal while charging your smartphone with the meal box. It’s possible in India.
Fast food chain titan Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), together with Mumbai-based advertising agency Blink Digital, has developed a techie and trendy meal box called “Watt a Box,” a limited edition 5-in-1 meal box with a built-in power bank.
Reports from news sites Times of India (TOI) and Time described Watt a Box as having a detachable 6,100Ah lithium-ion battery, a USB cable for Androids, and an Apple lightning cable for iPhones. Customers from New Delhi and Mumbai can try out the meal box by joining a contest on KFC’s Facebook page.
According to TOI, Lluis Ruiz Ribot, CMO of KFC India, articulated that the initiative, which was launched recently, objectifies serving an “abundant meal at an affordable price.”
“With the launch of Watt a Box, we have gone a step ahead and also introduced an element of utility into the box. Each one of us spends a considerable time on our smartphones daily, and the phone battery going dead is almost like a nightmare! No longer is that the case, with the Watt a Box around,” he told TOI. Advantages of a California Mesothelioma Lawsuit
Did you know that you can file a California mesothelioma lawsuit in any state in the country? You don’t have to file in the state where you live. You don’t have to file in the state where a corporation you are suing is headquartered (which would be impractical in any event, since many mesothelioma cases involve multiple corporations from different states). People can file a California mesothelioma lawsuit from any state in the US. If the facts are right, at Kazan Law we think that is just what you should do.
Advantages of a California Mesothelioma Lawsuit
California is one of several states with higher than average levels of asbestos exposure. In fact, there are more deaths due to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses each year in California than in any other state. In addition to heavy industries and shipping, where asbestos was commonly used, Californians face an added threat from asbestos mines.
Not surprisingly, California is also one of the states with the largest number of asbestos lawsuits. This is partly historical: when people with mesothelioma first began to file lawsuits in the 1970s, many of the plaintiffs were based in California because of the state’s high rate of asbestos disease.
That isn’t the only reason so many people file asbestos lawsuits in California. Mesothelioma lawsuits are in a special category in California courts. The judicial system in the state has different rules governing asbestos litigation, including a faster route to trial for plaintiffs with mesothelioma.
In addition, California’s laws are more favorable to mesothelioma plaintiffs than the laws of some other states. Some of the other states with the largest number of asbestos lawsuits have passed legislation to restrict access to the judicial system for people who have been injured by exposure to toxic asbestos fibers, or limit the damages they can recover or make suing more difficult.
For example, after Texas defendants lost lots of mesothelioma lawsuits in the late 1990s, the state passed laws that limit the legal liability of the corporations responsible for negligently exposing people to asbestos. When one of these corporations merges with another company or is sold, their responsibility for paying the damages they owe is reduced in Texas.
Who Can File a California Mesothelioma Lawsuit
Among the restrictions placed on asbestos litigation by some states are laws that limit or bar out-of-state residents from filing mesothelioma lawsuits. There are no such restrictions in California. Anyone can file a California mesothelioma lawsuit if the facts are right.
Your location and the expense of travel should not stop you from filing a California mesothelioma lawsuit. When you work with a top-notch asbestos law firm, your lawyer will travel to your location to meet with you. Kazan Law lawyers regularly meet with clients outside California, sometimes traveling across the country to work with people who have mesothelioma. We believe you can contribute more to the success of your mesothelioma lawsuit if you are able to rest in the comfort of your own home.
The bottom line is that California mesothelioma lawsuits are often more successful and usually deliver larger verdicts. California juries really understand the claims of plaintiffs who are terminally ill because of the negligent actions of corporations who valued corporate profits over workers’ health.
Even if your California mesothelioma lawsuit settles before going to trial, your settlement may be larger in California. Defendants know that a trial in a California court is likely to go against them. This gives them an incentive to agree to a more favorable settlement.
In addition, some of the top asbestos law firms in the country like Kazan Law are based in California. When you choose a lawyer to represent you in your California mesothelioma lawsuit, you can choose from among the best.
Your mesothelioma lawsuit can provide the financial stability to comfort you during your illness and provide for your family once you are gone. Where you file – and what law firm you choose to represent you – can make the difference of millions of dollars in the settlement or jury verdict you receive. Picking a law firm can be the most important financial decision of your life. That is yet another reason to file a California mesothelioma lawsuit.
Justice in California
There is one more good reason to file a California mesothelioma lawsuit. It’s not about money – although your compensation is important. It’s about right and wrong and justice for the next generation of mesothelioma sufferers.
When you bring a corporation to trial in California, you make it more expensive for that corporation to do the wrong thing. There are certainly still plenty of bad corporations in the world. There are some that are actively poisoning and harming people with toxic chemicals at this moment. But the more we hold those corporations to account for their actions, the less economic incentive they have to cut corners on safety.
When you file a California mesothelioma lawsuit, you aren’t just asking for compensation for your own injuries and money to replace the income your family is losing. You are standing up for the next generations so they have safer workplaces with better protections from asbestos and other toxic substances. Your lawsuit might just save someone else’s life!

How Does an Asbestos Lawsuit Begin?
If you or a member of your family has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestos-caused lung cancer, or another asbestos-related disease, you may want to consider filing an asbestos lawsuit. Because of the clear connection between the negligent use of asbestos by US industries and mesothelioma, many people have filed lawsuits and won compensation for their injuries.
The first thing you can do to help make your asbestos lawsuit a success is to hire the best asbestos attorney you can find, one with a great deal of experience in filing asbestos lawsuits. The next thing you can do is to learn about the process so you can best help your lawyer make your case.
Collect Your Asbestos Lawsuit Documents
In order to file an asbestos lawsuit on your behalf, your attorney will need proof of your diagnosis and the state of your health, as well as the cost of your medical treatment so far. In addition, your attorney will need to know your work history, to determine where you may have been exposed to asbestos. Top-notch asbestos law firms employ experienced investigators. An investigator will use your background information to gather evidence about where you were exposed to asbestos.
If this seems like an overwhelming amount of work, especially as you are coping with a severe illness, don’t worry. A good mesothelioma attorney will go over everything with you and will be able to help gather the documents you need for your asbestos lawsuit.
Beginning Your Asbestos Lawsuit
Before beginning the formal litigation process, your attorney may approach representatives from some of the corporations responsible for your asbestos-related disease. Some parties choose to enter into settlement negotiations with the most well respected mesothelioma attorneys before a lawsuit is filed, to avoid the time and expense of going to court. Instead some corporations ask us NOT to sue them so they can settle without wasting money on their lawyers.
If any of the parties have set up an asbestos trust fund, your attorney will initiate the trust paperwork. The corporations with asbestos bankruptcy trusts can’t be named in an asbestos lawsuit. They have already admitted their liability for exposing people to asbestos and have set aside money under court supervision to compensate those who become ill with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases.
The parties who don’t agree to compensate you will be named in your asbestos lawsuit. Your lawyer will draft a complaint, which states the facts of the case and identifies all the parties in the lawsuit.
Your lawyer will file the complaint and get a summons from the court to serve on the parties named in the suit. These parties, now called the defendants, must file an answer with the court within 30 days. If any of the defendants do not respond to your lawsuit within the required time, your lawyer can seek a default judgment against that party. After a default is entered, your attorney will pursue that party for compensation.
Defendants always respond by denying that they are liable for exposing you to asbestos. Some may argue that your illness is caused by other factors, such as smoking. This push back is a normal part of the litigation process. An experienced asbestos attorney will have heard all these arguments before and will know how to respond to them.
Asbestos Lawsuit Discovery
The next phase of your asbestos lawsuit is called the discovery process. During this phase, both your attorney and the attorneys for the defendants will ask for documents and other evidence about the case. The defense will want copies of your medical records. Your asbestos lawyer will ask for information about the use of products containing asbestos at different places where you worked or lived, who sold them, and what they knew.
Part of the discovery process is taking depositions. Depositions do not take place in a courtroom, but they are sworn testimony recorded by a court reporter that may be used in court during the trial.
It is likely that the defendants will ask for your deposition. This may sound scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Your lawyer will work with you beforehand to prepare you to testify and will be right by your side every minute. If your health is failing, the deposition is a chance to record your account of your asbestos exposure and illness. Later on, if you are unable to come to court to testify at trial, a recording of your deposition may be played instead, and will become evidence.
The discovery process can take several months. At times, you may feel that your lawsuit has stalled and that nothing is happening. For much of this time, however, your legal team will actually be hard at work. They will be combing through the documents received from the defendants through discovery, looking for evidence to bolster your asbestos lawsuit.
Will Your Asbestos Lawsuit Settle or Go to Trial?
Television likes the drama of the courtroom, but most people who get sued do not. Most lawsuits end with a settlement before trial. Asbestos lawsuits are no different: more than 90% end with a settlement and never go through trial.
The discovery process plays a big part in settlement negotiations. If the documents received through this process show that a defendant knew about the hazards of asbestos exposure and did nothing to protect you and others, that party is unlikely to win at trial. They may choose to settle with you to avoid the cost of trial, as well as the embarrassment of having their misconduct exposed.
If you are offered a settlement by one or more of the defendants in your asbestos lawsuit, your attorney will negotiate the settlement amount and will help you assess whether the offer is fair. The advantage of settling is that you will receive compensation much sooner than if your case goes to trial. If you win at trial, a jury may award you more money than you would get from a settlement. There is no guarantee, however, of winning at trial, or getting more than what was offered, so settlement may be a good idea.
Seek advice from an experienced asbestos attorney as soon as you are able. That is the best way to get your asbestos lawsuit off to a smooth start and heading to a good result.

Taylor Swift broke up with Harris ‘over the phone’–reports
American pop star Taylor Swift broke up with ex-beau Scottish DJ Calvin Harris in a most bizarre and peculiar way–through a phone call, similar to what pop boy band Jonas Brothers’ member, Joe Jonas, did to her a few years ago.
According to reports from Daily Mail and entertainment news site TMZ, Swift, 26, called it quits with Harris, 32, when she phoned him while he was “recovering from a horrifying car crash” on May 20 in Los Angeles, California, in the US.
This is strikingly similar to how Jonas left her in a 25-second phone call in 2008. In an interview with TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres in the same year, Swift recounted her distressing experience.
“When I find that person that is right for me, he’ll be wonderful. And when I look at that person, I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18,” she narrated to Ellen.
Sources scooped to TMZ that the pop star “was vague during the call, only saying she needed some space.” Harris was allegedly thunderstruck as he had reportedly thought that she “was in it for the long haul and wanted to help him recover.”
Contrary to the juicy claims, another insider divulged that Swift ran to Los Angeles to be at her former lover’s side.
The former couple split up a few weeks ago, and Taylor was spotted heating up romantic ties with “The Night Manager” and James Bond wannabe Tom Hiddleston. Gianna Francesca Catolico

Microsoft Edge beats Chrome in power efficiency
A recent comparative test showed that Microsoft’s Edge web browser beat Chrome and others in terms of power efficiency. Edge appeared to be the most power-efficient browser to date.
According to a report on Tech Radar, the Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Opera were tested simultaneously to see which notebook the browsers ran on would run out of juice first. The notebooks were put through a range of tasks including opening sites, adding tabs, rolling through pages and playing videos.
The Edge-equipped notebook lasted for around 7 hours and 22 minutes, followed by Opera at 6 hours, 18 minutes; Firefox at 5 hours and 9 minutes; and Chrome with only 4 hours and 20 minutes to show for.
It would seem that Microsoft is more than ecstatic about its victory and is saying that there will be more efficiency tweaks when its Windows 10 update comes out next month. This includes using less memory and CPU cycles. Alfred Bayle
