Apple offers web-based verion of iWork suite

Apple is bringing a cloud-based version of its iWork productivity suite one step closer to the masses.

The web-based iWork, which needs only an Apple ID, can be accessed for free on most modern browsers, TechCrunch reported.

Users with an Apple account can access "full-featured office apps that allow for the creation and editing of text documents, slideshow presentations and spreadsheets," it said.

While TechCrunch said this is move is "fairly unusual" for Apple, it may be smart since it gives an incentive for users to go to iCloud.

A separate article on The Next Web said "anyone can sign up for access to Pages, Numbers and Keynotes, officially."

Users will also get 1GB of online storage, it added.

"That said, the apps themselves still display a beta tag, but it’s nice to see Apple opening up its ecosystem a bit; cloud apps run on cross-platform Web standards, so there was no good reason to force users to have owned an Apple device before," it said. —Joel Locsin/JST, GMA News
